Background
Hambleden with Frieth and Skirmett Parothial ChurrtF Cwndl is the largest Parish in the
Hambleden Valley group of churches {HVG), managing jointly the affairs of SL Mary th8
Virgin Church. Hamb18den arKI SL Joth the Evangelist Church. Frieth.
Following the resignation of the Rector in 2020. the b￿efice was suspended which allowj
an Interim Priest in Charge to be recruited for a wiod of up to 18 months. After 8 thorough
recruitrnent and selection process. the Revd Sue Lepp was appoin￿ as Interim Priest in
charge in December 2020 arKI to 0)mMen￿ her duties in early January 2021 and was
assisted by the Associate Priest Revd. Sue Morton arKI the part ts'me parish adminrstrator
Jenny Neagle. During 2022, th8 Archdea￿7 agreed to extend the contrad of Revd Sue
Lepp ￿til De<xmber 2023 in ordw,to allow her to continue her w<)rk within the HVG group
of churches.
The parish continues to be supported Oy various visiling and retired dergy at times
thrc￿ghOut the year. In particutar, R8vd Patw Vinney regularly takes serrfi¢es and is a very
welcome visrtor to the benefice, and ￿rate Revd Andy Storth sp•rt some weeks within th8
HVG as part of his teamiry *Jout Min￿ in rural area8. Mrn Jenny North has contin￿1 her
work as Parish Visrtor.

As the whole WI￿ is onty loo awwe, the slgnff￿8nI impact the Covid 19 pandemlc hlt tha
Hambleden valley group of churct*s throughout 2020 and 2021 bLrt with the easing of covid
restrictions in December 2021, 2022 has been largety unaffected hith businwds very much
back to nonnal. In fact, it has been a very busy year 8spe¢ially in Hambleden with 20 (0)
weddings tskiNJ place. 9 (1) children bapb'*l. 11 (1) funerals and 3 (8) buria18 of asha8.
F￿ureS for Frieth church in brackets.
'Zoom" video church servic88 Started in May 2020 and have continu8d to be very popular
with many local people throughout the valley. Th8se services have b88n takn'ng place m08t
SurKlay's and Wednesday's for d￿ty prayer since their introducts'on.
Frieth Village Hall installed broadbarKI duriry 2021 for their use and gener￿SlY agreed to
allow Frieth Church to connect and use the broalband Servi￿ by beaming the connection
from the hall to the ehurch. The thurch paid forthe additiMal technical equipment as 8 on
off cost but enjoy the use of the broadband at rbo additional cost. are very grateful to
the Frieth Village Hall Manag&)￿tt wnmiitee for tt¥s on*oirrfJ g8nwou8 and ￿'rKI
arrangement.
The negative financial impact to the church has wntinued to affect the church in spite of
largely nomal services resumirKJ but with numbers still down on prewcovid levels. As
ConWuen￿, the donations on the pl* have reduced whilst most expenses remain at the
same or higher level th¥ing to inllati(m.

Parochial Churth Meeting (APCM) in accordan￿ with the Church Representstion Rules.

The PCC met four times duriTrJ the year. in person (no meetings were held by Zoom this
year) to conduct the busine88 of the PCC, exdudirNJ the APCM, each meeting started with
group meeting session of all the PCC'S {thr80 at St Kalharin88, ParnMx)r and ono at Frieth
School, FTieth) followed by irKlividual me8trNJs by each PCC. The PCC Standing Committ88
did not ¢onvene to expedrte urgent business during the year, howevw three virtual meetings
were hdd where PCC n￿lber5 *ere given details and asked to vote to accept or reject
proposals.
Church Sorvk
The pattem of services has been restored as the Covid restriclions have be8n eased by the
government. However. a number of parishioners have w)ts'nued lo shteld or been unwlling
to retum to geryices due to the fear of beirvJ exposed to th8 virus.
Average attendances at Sunday s8rvic8s in Odob8r 2022 was 21 in Hambleden and 20 in
Fiieth {2021 Hamb￿1￿ - 33 adults, Frieth 19 adults).
Zoom thurch services have pro￿1 popular wilh many people and ox)tinued on most
Wednesdays and also on Sunday swvices at Frieth thrcwhout the year.
Average Zoom attendances at Sunday services acxoss the group hwrfe reduced to a regular
few but Wednesday momings continue with arourKI a dozen people attending each week.

A monthty lay.lod s•Nko In Hamblod•n has a small but steady C¢￿￿ation.
Wild Chu￿h. seThi￿ take place every secoThJ Sunday and have continued outdoors at
a var• of venues throughout the valley during the year. An activrty of some sort , a couple
of hymns are surKJ, a 8ibl8 passage is read and swnpl8 prayer usualty followed by some
appropriate refreshments. There was also a special remembrance Wld Church sepiice in
Turville Heath wilh a fy past to coMmem￿te a young spiffire pilot who crashed and died
in D8c8mber 1943.
Special Sorvicos and Sludy Courses
Prayers for P￿Ce. These quiet. prayerful sep4ices are normally held quarterly (in February,
May, August and November). but this year a wvice was held in FebNary only. Sometimes
these events are held in people's homes or in ¢hur¢hes. in response to world conflict, and
are atterKled by those of all denomin8tior*.

Mary's, Tupiille with prayer3 for healing arKI anointing wrth oil, on th8 fourth Wedn8sday of

began again in the church in summer 2021.

H•rv•8t Festlval 8ewvices were well atterKled in both thurche8. A backpack service w88
held in September in Harnble￿ to bless those beginning a year of tasks.

held in Turvill8.
Tho Royal Brltlsh L•glon Annual S•rvk• of Rem•mbrnnco rotates bglwe8n the four
thurches acr0&8 the valley and with irKlividual services at some of the churches. This year
it was h81d in Hambleden churth with a large congregation. and ceremony afterwards at the
village memorial. Frieth Church held a short service had a talk by local historian arKI
broadcaster ArKlrew Green regardirKJ the history of John Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress
teading up to its very considerable connections to the Great War- both as a comforttng text
for soldrers and as a foryjs for memori￿.

A special eV￿SOng in May was held for Chrisline Wells, to mark her 65 years as HambWen
organist. A surprise ￿rtificate was presented by the President of the Royal College of
Organists and there were refreshments afterwards.

Buckinghamshire Council Chairman. Councillor Zahir Mohammed held his annual church
seprfice at Hamblthn church on Sunday 6 March 2022 whid) was attended by the 'good

Mothering Sunday
A Mothering Sunday was held at Hambjeden thildren as￿8￿.ng Su8 Lepp with
the distrrbution of a posy to every I￿ty. Fr￿ thurch also held a special Mothering Sunday
serrfice with local children saying special prayers and giving thanks for mothers Posies of

The Bell ringers did us proud. rirvJww on all the occasions throughout the mourning period

Condol•nc•, as in the other churche4 which mary people c*m8 to 8ign. This has beèn put
togather with Iho other Church books and sent to BU￿.nghaffl Palace. A copy was made by
Revd Su8 Lepp, to be kept for the Hamblth Valley, wilh frnvord by Alan Amistrong.

Charitable giving increased over last year as the PCC felt it was important to support various
charities that do such good work and rety on grants. This year a total of £3,632 was given
(last year £4,99n. TrganisatiorB supported indude: Christian Aid, One Can Trust,
Communty Matters, Christ Hosptsi, Child￿'S Souety, Sightsavers, Royal British Legi￿.

Hambleden and Frieth church88 host sérvices a￿1 everts throwJh L•nt and Holy Wwk.
Friendly Lent lunches ￿Pre held at Frieth (1 date) and Hambleden (3 dateg) having b88n
cancelled for the past two yeafs because of COVKI restrictions. The Frieth lunth proceeds
were given to the Ukraine appeal. Good Friday and Eastsr Day services were held in
Hambleden.
The Hambl•d•n and Frf•th Cholrn, under the diredion of Mi88 Christine Wells, w8r8 able
to operate during the year as nornial. The powlar Hambleden Concorts conts'nued in
summer and Christine Wells arrang&J for The Quoen's SIX to come to Hambied8n. This
choir based at St George's Chapel, sang at the Duke of Edinburgh's fvneral. A full churth
was treated to the most exquisrte singing. In addition, A 'F••tlve Choral con￿1v with th8
UCL Chamb•r Cholr. organised by Northend Concerts took place at Hambleden Church Ai
Hambledon and Turvlll• B•ll-rfnger•- There have been bells in th8 Hambleden valley for
at least six hundr￿1 years. Out of the sevén churches in th8 parish. only Turville (5 bells)
and Hambleden (8) have bells hung ft)r than￿ringing, where the ringing order bo
thanged. Tho old8st is the"AginGOUrt Bell. al Hamb1￿18n. which dates back to th8 battle of
1415. There are more tt￿n a dozen enthusi881ic ringers who give up their evenings to
practice at Turville {MoThdays) and Hambleden (FrKlays), so Can properly call the
congregation to Service. and to ring after *Bddings 8nd mark other special d8te8 or events.
chU￿h Porch Teas through the summer month8 offer refreshrnents to locals and passers-
on Sunday afternoons in Hambleden arKI make an extremely valuable financial
contribution to the runThng of the thurdw. sincere thanks go lo Karen Musgrave who
is now the organiser for church teas. with rn￿h enthu8i88m and ideas for increasing
customers.
Frieth churdi organise a monthly Lunch Club hdd at The Ye•V Tree, Frieth. This was
r8Started in 2022 and approximatsly 25 - 30 people now regularly attend each monthly
event.
