Annual Report of the Torbay Methodist Circuit
TRUSTEES ANNUAL REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDING 31 AUGUST 2024 CHARITY 1134368
Objectives and Activities
The objectives of the charity are: Provision of public religious worship open to all; Promotion of prayer as a vital part of life; provision of pastoral care to all that require it; Promotion of education and training in the Christian faith; Support and nurturing worshipping communities; promotion of faith based education and activity for the young.
The circuit is composed of 5 Methodist churches, one joint Methodist / United Reformed church and one Christian community centre. Throughout the year we continued the ongoing ministry of worship, prayer and Bible teaching
Achievements during the year
The Torbay Methodist Circuit continues to help to sustain many community groups and makes a difference in all sorts of areas. We host a Community Larder and Supermarket along with supporting food banks in the bay. Community coffee mornings are very popular and warm spaces are a great asset. Alcoholics Anonymous and Slimming World groups are held weekly. Regular activities for children and young people are provided including brigades, children’s music groups and a toddler group. Many community groups are grateful for our premises which are well maintained while safeguarding policies follow Methodist guidelines along with all strategies which combine to give our own members, friends and the community, safe places to meet and enjoy time together.
Financial Review
Income was lower than expenditure during the year mainly due to necessary repairs to property. The full annual accounts can be viewed on the relevant page of the Charity Commission website. The Circuit Model Trust Fund is used as a reserve fund to meet exigencies within the the running costs of the circuit and to provide individual churches with small grants to support new initiatives. Total funds at the end of the year were £260,344 of which £64,275 were unrestricted and £196,069 were in the Model Trust Fund.
Structure, government & management The governing document is laid out on the charity Commission website. As of August 2024, we are a part of the Methodist Church in Britain and were part of the Plymouth and Exeter Methodist District who offer some oversight of our governance, The Methodist District will be restructured later in 2024. The Circuit Meeting had 32 members acting as Trustees as of 31 August 2024. The current list of Trustees may be viewed on the Charity Commission Website. Other than the officers who are on the body because of the office they hold, serving members are elected annually by local church members and various circuit working groups. The day-to-day management is exercised under the leadership team consisting of our two ministers, the Circuit Stewards, Propety Secretary and Treasurer. The Circuit complies with the Safe guarding requirements of the Methodist Church in Britain, this includes regular review of the policy, keeping training up to date and displaying relevant information for all users of the various buildings within the Circuit Staffing Two full time people were employed during the year.. Rev Jeffrey Short (Superintendent Minister) and Rev Douglas Rix. The Ministers were assisted part-time by Miss Annette Hinde (Circuit Administrator).
