NEWARK AND SOUTHWELL METHODIST CIRCUIT
YEAR ENDED 31 AUGUST 2025
TRUSTEES. ANNUAL REPORT
The trustees of the Newark and Southwell Methodist Circurt present their report for the year ended
31 August 2025.
Introduction
The Newark and Southwell Methodist Circurt covers Newark. Southwell, Collingharn and surrounding
villages. The circurt comprises 9 Methodist churches and provides staff support and leadership.
As Methodists, we seek to enact the calling of the Methodist church as, through worship, we seek to
increase awareness of God's Presen￿ and to celebrate God'5 love. We share together to help
people to grow and leam as Christians through mutual support and care as we strive to be good
neighbours to people in need and to challenge injustice and we witness eagerly io make more
followers of Jesus Christ.
Review of the year
Following the adoption of the Circuit Mission Ststement in September 2023 '1n God's strength. as
a family of churches in Newark and Southwell, our circuit encourages, excrtes and enables
people to deepen their faith in Christ, to offer it to all and to work with communities for
transfomiation. and developing strategies covering eight areas of development the following have
been rolled out in in the past twefve months".
A Worship and Preaching Academy has been fomied and as a result the Worship Leaders
and Local Preachers, Meetings have become more relevant and dynamic.
Local Lay Pastors have stsrted new groups and have sought ways of building connections
with the communty induding a safe meeting place for rebJg* mothers and their families.
The Circuit has agreed to invest time, finan￿ arKI prayer to enable one of the tsvo
presbyters to engage in PiorFeer Ministry from January 2026 after which fifty percent of his
time will be spent exploring aThd introducing new ways of being church and encouraging
those on the margins.
Memory Worship, a short serviTr designed to engage carers and those experiencing
mernory problems has been taken monthly to a local residenlial home for the elderly.
Several Kintsugi courses have been well supported looking at a range of issues such as
mental heatth. finance and relationships. thus consbdering corrtemporary issues within a
broad Chrislian framework.
One church has its premises up for sale and is heavily invested in seeking a new way
forward to honour its purpose statement. which includes a strong leaning towards
inclusiwty.
All of the above are in addition to the ongoing activ￿"e$ reported previously such as prayer
walks. seeker courses, Open the Book. Alpha Courses, school work at the Anglican-
Methodist schools, Messy Church. pastoral care, Wami Welcome Spa￿$, regular village
social gatherings and the like.
Financial
The circuit income is primarity drawn from the assessments paid by the constituent churches.

During ihe year the unrestricted fvnds of the circuit increased by £265,861. The sales of Elston
Methodisl Church and the manse at Balderton realised a net sum of £328,110. Against this there
have been addf(ional costs including:
Finar7Gial support for a church to carry OLrt essential repairs.
Financial support to assist churches in meeting their assessmer
The employment of local lay pastors to work in the Circuit which was funded partly by the
circuit and partly by a grant of £15,023 from the District.
The unrestricted Model Trust Fund of the circuit indudes £141,032 ￿'ng the amount left from the
sale of the premises of Hawtonville Methodist Church and, by a decision of Circurt Meeting, this sum
is designated for the acquisitson of new premises for Hope Community Methodist Church.
The circuit and ts churches continue to fa￿ financial thallenges but remain commrtted to a strategy
for growth.

Southwell and Eastern Nottinghamshire general￿ for the Methodist Church.
The purposes of the Methodist Church are. and have deeined to have been since the date of union,
the advancement of..
a) The Christtan faith in accordance with the d(KtrFnal stsndards and discipline of the Methodist
Church
b) Any charitable purpose for the time being of the connexion. district, circuit. local church or
c) Other organizations of the Methodist Church

The teaching of Christs"anty through semions. courses, small groups and other events
The resourcing of pastoral work induding visiting the sick and bereaved
Taking acts of collective worship in local schools
Promotion of Christianty through staging of events and ServI￿S
Public benefit
We confirm the trustees have regard to the charty commrssioners. guidance on public benefit.
Structure governance and management
The goveming documents for the circuit are the Deed of Union (1932) and the Methodist Church Act
(1976}.
Detailed g0Veman￿ arrangements are outlined within the Constitutional Practi￿ and Discipline of
the Methodist Church (CPD} by order of the annual conference.
Day to day management of circuil is undertaken by the Circuit Leadership Team, the Circuit
Meeting and the Local Preacher5 Meeting.
Trustee training
iv.

A range of guidance is produced by the Methodist connexion to support the effective running of the
circuit specrfically the leafiet the role of the trustee in the Methodist Church which is available to all
new circuit meeting members as part of their induction as trustees.
Related parties
The circuit is part of the Nottingham and Derby District and is also accountable to the Methodist
Conference.
The circuit consists of the following churches..
Balderton, Charles Street. Collingham. Hope Communty. Long BenniThJton, North End. North
Muskham, Southwell and SuttoTron-Trent
Risk management
Major risks are identified by the circuit leadership team who take professional advice where
necessary.
Income and expenditure are reviewed regularty at circurt leadership meetings and circuit
meetings where annual budgets are agreed and a review of activities undertaken.
ReseNes policy
The policy of the circuit is lo hold at least 6 months of average annual expenditure in reserves. At 31
August 2025 the uncommitted circutt reserves were in excess of this due to the re￿Trt sale of a
chapel and a manse. The money generated from the sale of the Balderton manse is being used to
partly fund thr￿ local lay pastors.
The Circuit tnjstees believe thal overall there are sufficient funds to secure the short to mid term
abilty to meet the liabilities of the Circuit. The long term financial viabilty of the circuil is less clear.
In the circumstanTrs the Circutt trustees further believe that. given the current general economic
outlook and Ihe additional challenges that may give to churche51o meet their assessments, the funds
that the Circuit holds in reserves is not excessive.
The Circuit continues to employ 3 Local Lay Pastors and the cost is being met by a grant from the
Methodist District Advan￿ Fund and the proceeds from the sale of the manse at 8alderton. That
funding is due lo expire at the end of 2026 and applications have been submitted for grants to allow
the employments to continue.
Safeguarding
Every person has a value and dignty which comes diredty from the creation of male and female in
God's own image and likeness. Chrisb'ans see this potential as fulfilled by God's re-creation of us in
Chrisl. Among other thiws this implies a duty to value all people as beating the image of God and
therefore to protect them from hami.
Methodist Connexional practice outlines commitm￿* to the followng princÉples".
a} The care and nurture and respectful ministy wÉth all children and young people and adutts.
b) The safeguarding and protection of all thildren and young people and adults when they are
vulnerable.
c) Establishing of safe caring communits.es which wovide a loving environment where there is
infomed vigilance as to the dangers of abuse.
d) We will carefully selecl and train all those wrth any respOn￿bIlty within the church in love with
safer recruitment pr5nciples including the use of Criminal ￿ordS disdosures and registration
with the relevant vetting and barring schemes.
e) We will respond without delay to every complaint made which suggests that an adult, child
or young person may have b￿n harmed by c(>operating wrth the police and local authority
in any investigation.
fj We will seek to work with anyone who has suffered abuse developing with them an
appropriate ministy of infomed pastoral care.
g) We will seek to challenge any abuse of power especially by anyone in a position of trust.
h) We will seek to offer pastoral care and support including supervision and refer to the proper
authorities any member of our church communty known to have offended against a child or
young person or vulnerable adutt.

In all these principles will follow legislation guidance and recognised good practice.
The Newark and Soutthvell Circurt commits itsetf to ensuring the implementation of Connexional
Safeguarding Policy" govemment legislation, guidan￿ and safe practi￿ in the circuit and in the
churches.
The Newark and Soutlmell Circuit commits itself to a vision of support advi￿ and training for lay
and ordained people Ihat ensures people are clear and confident about their roles and
responsibilities in safeguarding and promots'ng the welfare of chiklren and adults who
may be vulnerable.
Future developments
The next five years continue to be shaped by the further implementation of the Circuit Strategy.
building on the areas whith have already commenc&J and taking further steps in the areas which
are still to be devdoped-
P8rmitting one of the circuiys two presbyters to pursue a pioneering role.
Connecling with District and Connexional stated aims. grants are being sought to enhance
the pioneering work we have committed to and to allow our three Local Lay Pastors,
contracts to be extended beyond December 2026 so that we may continue to be a growing,
inclusive, evangelistic and justic&seeking presence in OLEr communities.
Following the appointment of a new Superintendent in September 2025 there will be a
refocusing of communication strategies.
