## **MINUTES OF THE ANNUAL PAROCHIAL CHURCH MEETING 2022**

The meeting commenced at 12.20pm

1. **Minutes of the previous Meeting:** These minutes were proposed by Alan Wills: seconded by Maggie Owen and all agreed, with two abstentions.

2. **Annual Report on the Financial Affairs of the Parish, presentation of accounts and their submission to the Independent Examiner:** Tony Humphreys (PCC Treasurer) reported that there was an improvement in income compared to the previous year. Most types of income had increased eg collections, fundraising, hall hire, wedding and funeral fees. Costs however, have also increased. Improvements to St Peter’s Church lighting and to the Parish Hall have been very expensive and the cost of our Parish Quota has gone up. This meant that there was an overall deficit of £32,368 in 2021 which left us with a balance of £60,263 in the bank. Compared to many churches we are in a good financial position. The independent examiner, Simon Merchant, has seen the accounts and is happy to sign them off.

5

Q. Frederick asked if there is any major expenditure planned for this year? Tony Humphreys replied that the Ukraine War is leading to a huge rise in energy costs but that no large expenditure was planned. Rev’d Simon mentioned that there were discussions taking place about renewing the Parish Hall kitchen but no firm plans as yet. Frederick Frater asked if anyone had considered improving the Parish Hall floor and Rev’d Simon said that the parish would have to fundraise to achieve that.

The Accounts were proposed by Tony Funnell and seconded by John Ridgeway. Rev’d Simon thanked Tony Humphreys, Anne Short and John Pope for their careful stewardship of the finances over the past two years in very challenging circumstances.

3. **Reception and Adoption of the Revised Electoral Roll:** Elaine Dobbs reported on the Electoral Roll which now totals 127. Five people died during the course of the year and five people moved away from the parish. One person became Clerk in Holy Orders (Paul Palmer). Rev’d Simon thanked Elaine for updating the roll and for all her hard work for the parish over the past year and in previous years.

4. **Annual Report on the fabric, goods and ornaments of the Churches** :

The Church Wardens presented their fabric reports on their respective churches. Maggie Owen asked if grab rails could be fixed onto the outside of St Thomas to help those with mobility issues. Rev’d Simon replied that the PCC is currently looking at access issues in relation to all three churches and that it is possible the parish may get some funding for its buildings in this respect. Elizabeth Woods asked if there had been a recent valuation of St Thomas’ House. Rev’d Simon said that the property was valued when Rev’d Sam Frampton arrived in the parish as curate and at that point the value was £475,000.

5. **Deanery Synod Report:** Alan Wills reported Rev’d Simon Cutmore is currently the Rural Dean and also that there is a laity vacancy to sit on Deanery Synod.

   - Q. George Hart asked where Deanery Synod meets? Alan replied they have met on Zoom recently and at Christchurch, Chorleywood but generally different church buildings around the deanery are used.

6. **Election of members to the Parochial Church Council:** Christine Bunce and Elaine

   - Dobbs stood again and were unanimously re-elected. Elizabeth Woods stepped down and Maggie Owen was elected unanimously in her place.

|**Candidate**|**Proposer**|**Seconder**|
|---|---|---|
|Christine Bunce|Alex Cutmore|Elaine Dobbs|
|Elaine Dobbs|Alex Cutmore|Patricia Fryer|
|Maggie Owen|Elizabeth Woods|Helen Ford|

7. **Election of Sidepersons (usually delegated to the church committees)** : It was unanimously agreed that this would be delegated to the relevant church committees **.**

8. **Appointment of Independent Examiner** : Simon Merchant is willing to continue as our Independent Examiner. This was agreed unanimously. It was suggested we buy Simon a bottle of wine as a token of our thanks.

9. **Reports on Parish Organisations:** Rev’d Simon said that whilst many groups and committees had resumed since the pandemic, others were not active. Overall the parish was still recovering from the impact of the pandemic. He thanked all those who had submitted reports.

Q. Alan Wills asked if the intercessions training had taken place? Rev’d Simon said that it had been hard to find suitable dates but the training would go ahead.

6

Q. Alex Cutmore asked if the St Peter’s Committee was needed if it had not met for two years? John Ridgeway asked the meeting if anyone thought a St Peter’s Committee meeting was needed. Three people said it was needed. It was agreed this should be discussed at the next PCC meeting.

John Ridgeway commended the reports to the meeting. Rev’d Simon thanked everyone who led a group.

10. **Mission Action Plan 2022**

   - Rev’d Simon introduced this document which helps us to focus on going beyond attending church to helping and developing relationships with our local communities. The Plan identifies three key areas: families and children; general community; the elderly and isolated. In order for the Plan to develop, the work has to be taken on by people beyond the Local Ministry Team. We have to use our existing connections to Mill End Community Centre, Mill End Community Hub, Residential Homes such as Dapplemere and Meresworth, our work with children eg Fusion.

The meeting was unanimous in its agreement to take the Plan forward.

11. **Any other matters concerning the Parish:**

   - Symeons Premises Licence. John Ridgway explained that the Symeons have existed for 61 years and that their members had always taken on lead roles within the parish. In 2005 Symeons were granted a Premises Licence by Three Rivers District Council, which enabled them to serve alcohol from the Parish Hall bar. Symeons membership is now too low for this licence to be renewed so the club is suggesting a change in their rules. If membership is granted to everyone on the electoral roll then there will be enough members for the licence to be renewed. This means that in future Symeons will not just be a men’s club but a club for everyone. Everyone voted unanimously to allow the rule change and to become members of Symeons.

12. Rev’d Simon thanked the Church Wardens: Tony Funnell, Rachel Smith and Alison Drury, for all their hard work. He thanked Richard Hickson, Helen Frankland, the Choir and PeterRock for providing music for all the churches. Also all those who took intercessionary prayers and those who worked tirelessly in the background to keep the work of the church going.

Maggie Owen proposed thanks to Simon and the meeting applauded in response. Alan Wills reminded everyone that Paul Palmer’s ordination was taking place on 3[rd] July. **Closing Prayers** : The meeting closed at 1.08pm with prayers.

## **Safeguarding Report**

Group PCC Report by the Parish Safeguarding Officer

Objective To safeguard the vulnerable children and adults in our Parish.

Members Rachel Smith – Parish Safeguarding Officer Siu Palmer Cheung – DBS Administrator

## Actions 2022/2023

There has been contact between the Parish Safeguarding Officer (PSO) and DBS Administrator to review the list of people who need to have a renewed DBS check. These people have been contacted.

The Promoting a Safer Church Dashboard (an electronic checklist to make sure that actions are completed), continues to be updated by the PSO and the Vicar.

The Diocese has stated that all PCC members must complete a ‘Foundation Course in Safeguarding’ and a ‘Responding Well to Domestic Abuse Course’.

We placed an invitation to all of the Parish congregation, in the pew sheet, to complete the ‘Basic Safeguarding Course’ which can be accessed on the Diocese website under Safeguarding Training. The reason for this is the more people with training we have, the safer our parish is.

## Actions Proposed for 2022/2023

To review a list of church activities as more groups are starting up again after Covid. Also to check that we have completed risk assessments and have insurance cover for all of them.

Finally, for the PSO to continue to report any Safeguarding information at the regular PCC meetings. I will be attending an in person course at the Diocese office in St Albans in the coming week and I shall let you know of any changes.

## **STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT**

## **Governing document**

The PCC is a body corporate and is governed by the Parochial Church Councils (Powers) Measure 1956 as amended and the Church Representation Rules (contained in Schedule 3 to the Syndical Government Measure 1969 as amended). In 2009 the PCC was required to register as a separate charity and obtained charity number 1134153.

9

The method of appointment of PCC members is set out in the Church Representation Rules. All church attendees are encouraged to register on the Electoral Roll and stand for election to the PCC.

## **Risk management**

The trustees have a duty to identify and review the risks to which the charity is exposed and to ensure appropriate controls are in place to provide reasonable assurance against fraud and error.

## **Safeguarding**

The PCC has complied with the duty under section 5 of the Safeguarding and Clergy Discipline Measure 2016 (duty to have due regard to House of Bishops’ guidance on safeguarding children and vulnerable adults).

## **OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES**

## **Objectives and aims**

The PCC has the responsibility of co-operating with the Priest in Charge in promoting, in the ecclesiastical parish, the whole mission of the church pastoral, evangelistic, social and ecumenical. It also has responsibility for the management of the parish room and St Thomas House, Maple Cross.

## **Financial Review**

## **Reserves policy**

The PCC has total reserves of £108,462 of which £27,011 is restricted for specific purposes.

## **Principal funding sources**

The major funding sources are the people who regularly attend services in the three churches to whom the PCC is extremely grateful.

In 2022 the PCC also received a single donation of £17,000 to be used for a specific project within the parish and several bequests.

## **ON BEHALF OF THE BOARD:**

Premi Mowll – Parish Warden

Dated: April 2023

## **INDEPENDENT EXAMINER’S REPORT**

I report on the accounts for the year ended 31 December 2022 as set out below.

## **Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner**

The charity’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The charity’s trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year (under Section 144 of the Charities Act 2011 (the Charities Act)) and that an independent examination is required.

It is my responsibility to:

- examine the accounts under Section 145 of the Charities Act;

- to follow the procedures laid down in the General Directions given by the Charity Commission (under Section 145(5)(b) of the Charities Act); and

- to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.

10

## **Basis of the independent examiner’s report**

My examination was carried out in accordance with the General Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a ‘true and fair view’ and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.

## **Independent examiner’s statement**

In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention:

- (1) which gives me reasonable cause to believe that, in any material respect, the Requirements

- to keep accounting records in accordance with Section 130 of the Charities Act; and

- - to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and to comply with the accounting requirements of the Charities Act have not been met; or

- (2) to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

Simon Merchant Princes Risborough Dated: April 2023

Approved by the PCC and signed on their behalf by:

Premi Mowll (Parish Warden) Tony Humphreys (PCC Treasurer) Dated: April 2023 Dated: April 2023

## **ACCOUNTING POLICIES**

## **Basis of preparing the financial statements**

The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the Church Accounting Regulations 1997 as amended by the Church Accounting Regulations 2006 together with applicable accounting standards and Statement of Recommended Practice (SORP) ‘Accounting and reporting by Charities’ 2005.

## **Accounting convention**

The financial statements have been prepared on a Receipts & Payments basis.

## **St Thomas’ House**

The PCC is the Management trustee of St Thomas’ House, a property used to house curates during their tenure with the parish. When there is no curate, the property is let out on commercial terms.

## **Group: LOCAL MINISTRY TEAM**

**Objective of the Group:** To bring the Kingdom of God and the love of Christ to all with whom we come into contact through our various ministries; and to support and share in the ministry of the Vicar in the parish and community.

**Members:** Rev’d Simon Cutmore, Rev’d Nicolette Wolf, Helen Ford (Reader), with support from Rev’d Mary Kingsley and Rev’d Scott Talbot.

The Ministry Team was delighted to welcome Rev’d Nicolette Wolf who joined the team in the middle of 2022 and was licensed by the Archdeacon of St Albans, the then Rev’s Jane Mainwaring (who has since been licensed as Bishop of Hertford) at St Thomas’. Nicolette was ordained Priest at St Peter’s Church a couple of months later. The team continues to have the support of Rev’d Mary Kingsley and Rev’d Scott Talbot who regularly lead Sunday worship in our three churches.

## **Action complete in the 2022/23**

- The Ministry Team has met six times since the last APCM meeting, with the majority resuming as face to face meetings. The meetings have been centred around the sharing of a meal followed by the discussion of ministry matters, then concluding in prayer.

- Fusion has met monthly, engaging regularly with a committed few young people and their families.

- Pilgrim Walks offered the opportunity for members of the congregation and wider community to gather together to walk and talk in fellowship for a couple of hours on a Saturday afternoon, to grow and deepen friendships.

- The Pastoral Care team continues to offer support to meet the care needs of the parish.

- The team has continued to give Offices of the Parish.

- We have run successful monthly services at the care home, Dapplemere.

- We ran a new Easter experience called ‘Walk with Jesus’ - our Holy Week initiative.

- We have given regular spiritual support and assemblies to three schools – St Peter’s School,

   - Mill End, Maple Cross School and St Mary’s, Rickmansworth.

- The team has been deployed to cover services at the parishes of Chipperfield, Sarratt and Rickmansworth which are currently vacant.

- We have had much engagement with community projects and events – ecumenically, and in the community.

## **Actions proposed for 2023/2024**

- To look at ways to be more visible in the community, engaging in community events and activities – taking Christ into the world.

- Nurturing the faith of our parish through home groups with Holy Habits programme, with a focus on Discipleship.

- To meet the needs of the lonely and isolated.

- To find ways of ministering to and engaging with the children and young people of our Parish, drawing on the resources from Youthscape.

## **Comments/Observations**

We are noticing the congregations in the three churches are beginning to see an increase in numbers – the first time since the restrictions imposed following the outbreak of the pandemic. This is really encouraging. Christmas services such as the carol service greatly helped to draw many new into the church. As has our services with uniformed children and their parents attending.

17

The successful feedback and numbers who attended events and services over Holy Week this year means that we shall seek to continue to follow the model of sharing food together during worship in more ways in the future, recognising its importance in building a welcoming community.

Our Sunday evening Remembrance service for Queen Elizabeth drew some to church who could not readily attend a Sunday morning service. Being a more reflective and music led service, we noted that recorded music can be a powerful resource to help encourage people in worship. We also noted that Sunday evening services could, if we could find the resources to run them, allow a wider audience of people into the church.

A focus this past year has been on attracting regular family attendance into church. We have been grateful for Sally Funnell’s help in running a monthly Children’s Church. We know that this offering may still not be regular enough for parents to want to commit to. However, we have adjusted our services to ensure that during any service we do, there are practical and tangible ways for people of any age to engage – be it a creative response to a sermon, playing music, or a creative invitation to prayer. We feel that this has been met with openness and a welcome response.

There has long been the desire to re-open the Monday morning Toddler group in the church at St Peter’s. Our challenge is finding volunteers to commit to serving week on week. We are in early talks with the local Catholic and Baptist churches to see if we can run one ecumenically to help launch this. We are also seeking to run an ecumenical Alpha Course this September with these churches in Mill End.

## **FABRIC REPORTS**

## **St John’s**

Two box bushes were removed from the front lawn as they could not be saved. Removal was funded and arranged by Margaret Wesley, and the Committee is very grateful for her contribution.

A silver birch tree (centre of three) to the left of the church appears dead and as it is leaning towards the church, requires cutting before it falls. Quotes are being obtained.

The outdoor noticeboard which was wobbly, was made stable.

Access into the church at present is a level path with a purpose built ramp used to compensate for the entry steps. The Deanery accessibility report (Sept 2022) recommended completely step free access, and also replacement of the portaloo with an accessible toilet. However, due to current finances, no additional work can be considered at this time.

The gas boiler was serviced 20[th] January 2023.

**St Peter’s**

The following items have been attended to at St Peters during the last 12 months: -

- The lightening conductor test was completed.

- The organ was tuned.

- The fire extinguishers have been checked.

Following a major garden clearance last year I have endeavoured to keep on top of the gardening, spending 2 hours a week cutting back plants. In recent weeks I have been tackling and claiming back the garden outside the hall windows.

Unfortunately, the new toilets have caused problems with the drains which requires them to be unblocked every 6 to 8 weeks. The Symeons have purchased some drain rods which make this unpleasant task easier.

Two soakaway drains from the Church downpipe are blocked (probably by tree roots). This will be a major job to resolve.

Work has been completed on all the recommendations from the Ecclesiastical Insurance company health and safety review except fencing off the boiler room steps. This was only an advisory but a solution needs to be found.

We are still concerned about the evidence of mortar weather erosion on the external walls of the church and damage to internal plastering. We are awaiting a long overdue visit from Bob Thompson, the diocesan architect for his advice.

My continued thanks go to all who work so hard to keep St Peters running smoothly, The Cleaners, Brass cleaning, the Sidespersons and all those who willingly give up their time to help with gardening parties, gutter and drain maintenance, as well as those that help with specific maintenance tasks which are beyond my skill level.

I would like to thank specifically Elaine Dobbs, Anne Short and Derek Cole who have been a great help to me during the year.

Tony Funnell St Peters Churchwarden

## **St Thomas'**

The gardening day in August 2022 was very successful. The working team that came from HS2 were enthusiastic and cut back the tall ferns at the back and tried their best with limited tools. They have promised to bring/donate better gardening equipment when they return this summer.

A big thank you to the volunteers who helped to weed borders, cut back bushes and pull out nettles. Also for the large skip that was donated to collect the day’s green cuttings. Thanks also for the much needed refreshments!

December was a busy month; it began with a Fire Extinguisher inspection. Two extinguishers were replaced as they were out of date. Just before Christmas the outside tap pipe burst and a plumber came out and fixed the leak but blocked off the tap. Replacing the working tap is something which I am currently waiting for estimates on.

19

The cakes and carols service went very smoothly. Many thanks to Pat for bringing her delicious cakes.

In February 2023 the broken downpipe spotted on the Quinquennial Report was replaced and now leads to a drain. A Health and Safety inspection was carried out and the list of recommendations has been prioritised and is being worked through.

In March, Barbara Smith held a Bring and Buy Sale coffee morning at her house and raised a good deal of money as always. Thank you Barbara!

There have been quite a few funerals and baptisms at St Thomas’ and it is brilliant to see so many people from the community attend. Holy Week lunches at St.Thomas’ also welcomed people in.

## **GROUPS**

## **Group: St John’s Committee**

**Objective of the Group:** To support the running and upkeep of St John’s so that regular worship can continue. To promote the pastoral care of the local community. To support the Ministry team and Parish as a whole.

**Members:** Rev’d Simon Cutmore, Basia Hargreaves, Sandra Lewis, Anneli Pope, John Pope, Andrew Ross, Alison Drury (left April 2023), Chris Walton (joined January 2023).

## **Actions completed 2022/23:**

The lovely hassocks were displayed over the June bank holiday.

A community clean of the church was carried out on 12[th] November. This was well attended by members of the local community.

As usual, following the Harvest Festival on Sunday 4[th] September 2022, the Harvest produce was gratefully received by the Peace Hospice.

The Remembrance Service held on Sunday 13[th] November 2022 brought together members of the local community.

A Christingle service was held on Sunday 4[th] December and a very well attended joint carol service with the Heronsgate residents took place on 19[th] December 2022.

Due to popular demand, tea and cake parties were held throughout the year (21[st] September, 5[th] December 2022, 14[th] March 2023), thanks to Alison’s un-wavering energy & contribution.

The flower arrangers’ rota was cancelled and a WhatsApp group is in place to assist in communication among the remaining few volunteers to provide flowers as and when required. This is with the exception of Christmas flowers that are arranged by a Heronsgate resident in memory of her mother.

20

The gardeners’ rota was re-organised with, with the exception of one, new volunteers from the local community. A WhatsApp group is in place to assist in communication. The new rota was started on the 29[th] April 2023.

The local community continues to further support us by doing the cleaning, by donating a Christmas tree and helping to set up the candles for Christmas. Helen continues to play the organ most Sundays. This all helps the church look lovely and makes the services enjoyable.

## **Actions proposed for 2023/24:**

Andrew has offered to organise a concert that is enjoyable for all ages; no date has been set as yet.

To re-organise the cleaners’ and flower arrangers’ rotas.

As per a request from the gardeners, to organise a garden work party for late summer.

## **Comments/Observations:**

We very sadly lost Anthony McMurtrie from our congregation. Anthony had been a long serving warden and supporter of St John’s for many years. As a result of his death, Sally, his wife, relocated to a local residential home and is only able to come to services when a member of the congregation is able to drive her. Both are immensely missed.

Alison Drury is unfortunately leaving the area and will no longer be able to direct our committee, or worship with us in St John’s. Alison and her family will be greatly missed.

Basia Hargreaves

## **Group: St Peter’s Committee**

The committee last met in April 2020 but have been unable to meet since then. Its future is undecided.

## **Group: Deanery Synod**

## Objectives:

Strapline: “We are the Body of Christ.” As the third tier of Synodical Government in the Church of England, the Deanery Synod is a representative body comprising clerical and lay members from each of the eleven churches in Rickmansworth Deanery, and sits between the lowest tier of individual PCCs and the second tier of the Diocesan Synod. Members act as the electoral colleges for their respective Houses in the Diocesan and General Synods, and conduct a range of business including responding to issues referred down from the General Synod via the Diocesan Synod. The year 2022/2023 was the final year of the 18[th] triennium of Rickmansworth Deanery Synod.

The Deanery Standing and Pastoral Committee (DSPC) assists the Rural Dean in determining priorities across the Deanery, and particularly where there is a vacancy in a parish; during 2022/2023 two incumbency vacancies have occurred in the Deanery, with the retirement of the Reverend Michelle du Saire from the combined benefices of Chipperfield and Sarratt and the

21

departure of the Reverend Deborah Snowball from St. Mary’s Rickmansworth to become Vicar of All Saints Oxhey in Watford Deanery. At the time of writing, progress towards appointing replacement clergy are at an advanced stage, and by the APCM, the name of at least one of the new incumbents may be known. The DSPC also advises the Bishop in the selection of the new Rural Dean when an incumbent’s tenure of the post expires. It is possible that the DSPC will be called upon to exercise this latter responsibility during the 19[th] triennium.

## Members:

1. The Reverend Simon G. Cutmore (House of Clergy, also on Diocesan Synod and parish representative on DSPC; Rural Dean since October 2020).

2. The Reverend Nicolette Wolf (House of Clergy on joining the Parish from Christ Church Chorleywood in July 2022).

3. One vacancy (House of Laity).

4. Dr. Julie Shepherd (House of Laity, until her death in July 2022).

5. Dr. Alan Wills (House of Laity).

6. Miss Maggie Owen (Lay Reader emerita, House of Laity from October 2022)

## Actions complete in 2022/2023

1. Preliminary steps in the formation of a Deanery-wide project (the “Trinity Project”) to provide support to school children who may be suffering from mental health issues such as anxiety and depression. Several open / exploratory meetings have been held since November 2022.

2. Three Business Meetings (July 2022 in person, November 2022 by Zoom and March 2023 (hybrid meeting - at St. Mary’s Church, Rickmansworth and by Zoom)).

3. “In person” Deanery Ascension Day Eucharist at St. Paul’s, Chipperfield (26[th] May 2022; preacher The Reverend James Rigby, curate at St. Andrew’s Church, Chorleywood).

## Actions proposed in 2022/2023

1. Three Business Meetings (July and November 2023 and March 2024). The July meeting will inaugurate the 19[th] triennium of the Deanery Synod.

2. “In person” Deanery Ascension Day Eucharist at All Saints Church, Croxley Green (18[th] May 2023; preacher The Reverend Paul Palmer, curate at All Saints Church, Croxley Green).

3. Possible Deanery Choral Evensong (date and venue to be confirmed - action carried over from the proposals in several previous years).

4. Implementation, in stages, of the Trinity Project; Phase 1 targeted for September 2023.

5. Deanery Quiz in February 2023 (to be confirmed).

## Comments/Observations

We were saddened by the death of Julie Shepherd in the summer of 2022. Julie had been a valuable member of the Synod for a good number of years, and her input is sorely missed. Maggie Owen has kindly stepped in to fill that vacancy, although we still have one vacancy in our parish’s allocation of lay members of the Deanery Synod, owing to the failure to find a replacement for the untimely earlier death of John Marsh. Readers of this report are encouraged to consider putting themselves forward to serve on the Deanery Synod for the next three years.

22

Information given to the Synod during the middle year of the 18[th] triennium by Ms. Rachel Brockie, Diocesan representative of The Children’s Society was the catalyst for establishing the Trinity project, spearheaded jointly by Charlotte Barton, who has had years of experience of a similar programme, and the Rural Dean, who has trained as a mental health first aider, and Synod has had presentations from them both. Other presentations have included encouraging vocations from Rachel Dennigan and on the work of the Anna Chaplaincies by Maggie Dodd. Following the slow start reported last year, our new representative on General Synod has stepped up to the plate and has supplied comprehensive notes on the sessions held since July 2022. In particular he has highlighted the February 2023 debates about the report from the House of Bishops at the “conclusion” of the six year long Living in Love and Faith initiative, and his notes include links to YouTube clips of his and some other contributions. Attendance at Deanery meetings continues to be rather variable.

## **Group: Pastoral Care**

This Group was formed during the Covid 19 lockdown so that people who felt isolated, or needed any form of help, could have someone to contact. Also, the volunteers had an allocated list of people with whom they would keep in touch on a regular basis. This covered the congregation of all three churches and beyond, and avoided people ‘slipping through the net’ which concerned our Ministry Team when, or if it did, occur.

Since then we have acquired a freezer full of homemade food to give to those who would benefit, and home visits are also made as and when requested.

Both Dianne and I have also been contacted following the notice which appears weekly in the pew sheets and the monthly Chronicle, as indeed are Simon and the Ministry Team. It is so important for worried people to feel there is someone out there who is thinking of them and is prepared to listen and help in any way they can. Also, it is a way of keeping Simon and Nicolette updated on the needs of their parishioners and when it is requested they become involved, both in visits and prayers.

Elizabeth Woods

## **Ministry in Schools**

During the last year weekly Collective Worship (assemblies) have continued to be offered in both Maple Cross School and St Peter's School and initially at Shepherd School but this has tailed off, plus the occasional class or church visit as requested. These acts of worship are key to developing the spiritual lives of staff and pupils and they are the biggest congregations of the week.

The new pattern of Collective Worship is being embedded at St Peter's School as described last year with Rev’d Nicolette Wolf sharing fully in that vital work. St Peter's was graded as OUTSTANDING at its recent SIAMS inspection, mostly because of the hard work that has been

23

put in to developing the Christian character of the school. We have also supported St Mary's School with a weekly act of worship whilst the parish has been in vacancy.

I continue to serve as Vice Chair of Governors at St Peter's School and serve on the wellbeing task group and the community committee.

Before the end of the academic year we are looking to support Year 6 leavers at St Peter's and Maple Cross schools with a weekly drop in cafe which will bolster friendships, support wellbeing and develop Christian faith. This is a stand alone piece of youth work but will also feed into the work of the Trinity Project (www.trinityproject.uk - see the Deanery Synod report).

St Peter's School has a PCC appointed governor vacancy and one key way of building on the links between school and church is filling that key role. If you would like more details as to what that looks like, then please speak to me directly.

Rev’d Simon Cutmore

## **Group: Symeons**

## Objectives:

1. To be a society of the members of the congregations of St. Peter’s, St. John the Evangelist and St.Thomas of Canterbury and their friends.

2. To maintain the corporate image of the Church.

3. To worship regularly.

4. To share in active service to the Church.

## Committee 2022/23:

1. Mr. John W. Ridgeway - Chairman.

2. Mr. Anthony M. Funnell - Hon. Treasurer and Acting Bar Steward.

3. Dr. Alan J. Wills - Hon Secretary.

4. Mr. Allan D. Fryer - Hon. Membership Secretary.

5. Mr. Richard Hickson, Mr. Russell Mardling and Fr. Paul Palmer.

2. Quiz Supper in November 2022.

3. Bottle Tombola at the Christmas Fair at the end of November 2022.

4. Christmas Party in December 2022.

5. Limited maintenance activities.

## Actions proposed for 2023/2024:

1. Quiz supper and Christmas Fair Bottle Tombola in November and Christmas party in December.

2. Monthly guest nights / Symeons Socials.

3. Membership recruitment drive.

4. Continuation of maintenance activities and fund-raising.

## Comments/Observations:

The after effects of the coronavirus pandemic are still exerting an influence not only in the Symeons Club activities but also on the wider life of the parish. The opening of the Club to all members of the electoral roll following last year’s amendments to the constitution has resulted in the recruitment of a number of new members, including ladies for the first time, and we have been pleased to welcome some of them to the regular Monday night gatherings as well as the monthly socials. It still seems extremely difficult, however, to encourage younger members of the congregation to commit to parish organisations in general and the Symeons in particular, and indeed there has not been the recovery hoped for in the attendance at Sunday services, and in particular very few of the younger families are in evidence.

Dr Alan Wills

## **Group: Let’s Get Together!**

Let’s Get Together! Is continuing to meet on a Friday afternoon at St Peter’s Parish Hall under the leadership of Premi Mowll. If you feel like some tea and companionship, please just come along! First Friday of the month 2-4pm.

## **Group: The Tuesday Group**

We now meet on Wednesdays (although we still call ourselves 'Tuesday' Group!) at Mill End Community Centre from about 10.15am. Some members go down straight after the Wednesday morning Eucharist at St Peter's and others arrive at about 10.30am.

It's a great opportunity to have fellowship together and meet other people from our community over a coffee and a lovely selection of breakfast/brunch options. The welcome is always warm. It would be great if more people would like to join us there and support this community initiative at the same time. Once a month there are also Community Walks that set out from there and return for breakfast afterwards.

Alex Cutmore

## **Group: Fusion**

FUSION is an intergenerational gathering for parents and their young people which meets monthly from 4-6pm on the 3rd Sunday of the month for games, craft, food and some input about faith and relevant discussion. We usually meet in the Parish Hall. The group has evolved to being a group for Year 6 aged children and upwards with their parents/carers.

We have seen the group grow exponentially from small beginnings to there being regularly at least 15 of us meeting together.

FUSION has gone from strength to strength and is key to our work supporting the growth of faith amongst families and their children and young people.

Rev’d Simon Cutmore

## **Group: Junior Church**

Junior church has finally been restored to the worshipping life of St Peter's church. The work is aimed at primary school aged children is spearheaded by Sally Funnell. It meets on a monthly basis on the first Sunday of the month during the 11am Eucharist. Through story, reflection, activity and craft, Sally carefully nurtures the faith of the children who come.

Rev’d Simon Cutmore

We are very pleased that Junior Church returned last November! We meet on the first Sunday of the month and the children and I have fun enjoying a range of stories, games and activities based on the Gospel or reading for that day. Although numbers are small as yet, we are hoping that we will continue to grow so please do spread the word and come and join us if you can!

Sally Funnell

## **Group: Play and Praise**

This group has been unable to meet up this year but we are exploring whether this is something we can resume in a different form in the autumn.

## **Group: St Peter’s Choir**

We are fortunate to have a rich, diverse repertoire of sacred music from early 16[th] century choral music up to modern day worship songs but we are a small choir and need more people to join us! The choir meets for rehearsal in church on Thursday evenings at 8pm for an hour and briefly before the service on Sunday morning. Please contact Richard at millendmusic@gmail.com if you are interested.

## **Group: PeterRock**

## **Let’s Rock for God**

Members: Adam guitar & vocal, Richard keyboard, Alan electric cello, Russell rhythm guitar, John bass guitar & vocal, Klaus saxophone, Jonah drums, Reuben drums assisted by choir members’ vocals.

The band meets to play at the St Peter’s morning service every second Sunday of every month. More instrumentalists and singers are always welcome. Please contact Richard (millendmusic@gmail.com) if you want to get involved.

**2[nd] Rickmansworth Rainbows:** We have increased our number of girls to 19 this year, nearly back to our pre-covid numbers. Over the course of the year we have gained themed badges in Express Myself, Be Well and are currently working on our Explore badge under the Have

Adventures Theme. We have discovered football skills for the Women’s Euro’s, how to be Queen for the jubilee and took part in a ‘Super

Rainbows’ themed month for October learning about healthy eating, healthy mind and being kind to others.

Learning football skills

In December we joined other Rainbows in the District for a Rainbow Sleepover (first once since Covid) which was a joy, everyone had fun and we have another one booked for July.

With our Girlguiding family we have taken part in trips to the Pantomime and Matilda the Musical Film, both at Watersmeet and recently went to Lees Wood for a Division Activity Day with 400 other Meeting Archimedes members where we came face to face with an owl and a falcon the Owl and made s’mores (yum!).

27

**1[st] & 6[th] Rickmansworth Brownies:**

It’s been another jam-packed year full of excitement, challenge, discovery and most of all FUN!

We had a large cohort of Rainbows join us, full of boundless energy which fitted in well with our programme of enjoying the great out-of-doors, learning to look after ourselves, our communities and our beautiful world.

As we’re curious, we loved making magic potions and discovering the world of Beatrix Potter!

As we love adventure, we excitedly waited to see if our shelters would leak when water was poured on to the roof!

As we love food, we eagerly prepared vegetables for our pasta sauce.

As we love craft, we enthusiastically created a Jack and the Beanstalk collage for the Community Christmas Festival displayed in the church.

## We’ve averaged around 24 Brownies each week.

We sadly said goodbye to our 2 DofE helpers at Christmas and were very grateful for their contribution to the unit.

## **8[th] Rickmansworth Brownies:**

We have 28 girls who attend our meetings each Friday. Each term we work towards exciting badges which contribute towards Awards based around different themes. This year our themes have been Take Action, Know Myself and Have Adventures. As part of this we have learned how to be Dementia Friends with a representative from the Alzheimer's Society and raised money for them by holding an Elf Party. We have enjoyed Geocaching, led by a member of the County Walking Team, a Sausage Sizzle and a Pyjama Party!

Pyjama Party Den!

We are looking forward to joining in with the Big Help Out for the Coronation by undertaking a litter pick around Mill End. We also take part in events organised by the

District (such as watching the Pantomime and the film Matilda) and the Division; enjoying a day out at Lees Wood campsite.

We do our best to support Church Parades, where the girls enjoy carrying our unit flag and helping with little 'jobs' like handing out the books or reading a prayer.

We also took part in our Community Act of Remembrance at the Reach School and supported the church Community Christmas Fair by decorating a windowsill and helping to run stalls. We are delighted that 6 girls have achieved their Gold Award so far this year, with another 4 to be presented later this term.

**8[th] Rickmansworth Guides:** The guide unit is still going but is struggling for qualified leaders as there is only one left. We have done our recycling badge this year and celebrated International Women’s Day as well as Girlguiding Thinking Day. We are currently working our way through the guide programme doing some activities regarding DIY and outdoor activities. We have gone on a chip shop walk around the aquadrome and collected some chips on the way home as well. We also had a promise and badge ceremony where we invited the parents. We also attended the Divisional Activity Day out with over 400 other Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Rangers at Lees Wood camp site where the girls cooked pizzas on wood fires, learnt compass work and numerous other activities

Going forward this term we are going on a woodland walk learning about trees, doing a zip wire as well doing our backwoodsman cooking badge.

We have one guide going to Lorne on a Hertfordshire trip as well as a YL going on an international trip to the Azores.
