The PCC was also able to decide some formal business by correspondence. Some business was conducted through sub committees and groups. Important elements of standard business considered by the PCC during the year included: - regular reports on the Parish's financial situation. - matters relating to the church buildings (primarily as reflected in the reports on each church, as given in the relevant sections below). ## **Approved by the PCC and signed on their behalf:** ## **Parish of Swaythling** ## St Alban’s Church and St Mary’s Church Annual Report of the Parochial Church Council for the Year 2023 _St Alban’s Church, Tulip Road_ _St Mary’s Church, South Stoneham_ ## **Aim and purposes** The Parochial Church Council (PCC) of the Parish of Swaythling has the responsibility of cooperating with the incumbent, the Reverend Peter Dockree, in promoting in the ecclesiastical parish, the whole mission of the church, pastoral, evangelistic, social and ecumenical. ## **Objectives and activities** The PCC is committed to enabling as many people as possible to worship at our church and to become part of our parish community. The Vicarage is 357 Burgess Road, Southampton, SO16 3BD. This address also covers St Alban's Church where the Parish Office is situated. St Mary's Church and the St Mary's Community Hall are situated in St Mary's Church Close, off Wessex Lane, SO18 2ST. The Parish Website is htp://www.swaythlingparish.org.uk and the Parish Facebook page is htps://www.facebook.com/#!/ SwaythlingParish?fref=ts. The Parish registered with the Charity Commission on 5 February 2010 with the title ‘The Parochial Church Council of the Ecclesiastical Parish of Swaythling' (registered charity number 1134132). ## **Electoral Roll** At the Annual Parochial Church Meeting (April 2023) 87 people were on the roll (84 in 2022). The Parochial Church Council (PCC) manages the financial affairs of the parish and also, as required under the Parochial Church Councils (Powers) Measure 1956, co-operates with the Minister in promoting in the parish the whole mission of the Church, pastoral, evangelistic, social and ecumenical. We were delighted to welcome Joe Sweetnam to the Parish as curate in February 2023. His expertise as a former architect was a welcome asset when he took on co-ordinating the St Mary’s roof project. We said goodbye to KM a regular worshipper, RP and GH from our Thursdays Together community, who died in 2023. From June 2023, the Vicar, Peter Dockree, was absent due to illness. We are pleased to report that he began a phased return to work in March 2024. Peter writes, “ _I am grateful to the amazing team, for their hard work in not just keeping things going but seeing them flourish. I’m really excited to come back and to build on all that has been achieved whilst I’ve been off_ ”. ## **Worship** We are continually seeking to be a diverse, vibrant, inclusive and open worshipping community, where those who come feel welcome, connected and met by God’s grace, whether they have never been to church before or are lifelong church goer. In 2023 it has been wonderful to welcome new people to all our different forms of worship. On a Sunday: **The 8am** Book of Common Prayer service at St Mary’s offers quiet traditional worship. 18 **The 10:15am** at St Albans saw a growing and ever more diverse congregation. We have welcomed new people from the local community, some coming along after being part of our Thursdays Together community and others new to the area. We have continued to develop our musical worship, mixing traditional and contemporary hymns and songs and are particularly grateful to all those who have been part of making this happen. **The 5:30pm** “Threshold” at St Mary’s offered an inclusive space for reflection, questions, breaking bread together and community. It often met with very small numbers but there is a real sense that such a space is both needed and deeply valued. However, as numbers have become even more limited, during 2024 we will be exploring alternative options for how to continue to offer this space. Across all of our Sunday services, the average attendance has been 45 adults and 5 children. 10 adults joined but 8 left, 5 children joined but 2 left. **Once a month** , St Alban’s welcomes up to 20 families exploring faith together through a variety of crafts and activities as part of our Messy Church service. The session ends with an energetic celebration bringing together the theme of the afternoon along with songs and prayers. Almost everyone stays on for a home cooked meal and conversation around the tables. It has been a joy to see this congregation become more established over the year and to build relationships with families who come. We often hear comments like this from our Messy church participants, "I love this place, it's like our home". We are Thanks are also due to The Listeners Trust (for contributions towards the cost of a new water heater for the community room and towards Thursdays Together) and the Third Age Millennial Fund (for contributions towards holiday activities and food provision, cooking courses and providing breakfast at Thursdays Together during school holidays). Our major funding project – to raise £200,000 to replace the roof at St. Mary’s – has reached a total of £37,000 and we are enormously grateful to those who have contributed. In addition, we have been awarded grants of £10,000 each from the National Churches Trust, the Wolfson Foundation and the Cecil King Trust. We have also received a grant of £6,000 from The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Historic Churches Trust. Quotes have been received from three building companies and, in discussion with the church architect, we are currently in the process of selecting one of them. _[It should be noted that the PCC (with guidance from our Church Architect) has selected B & M Clark (Builders) Ltd. To carry out the works with a view to commencing inApril 2024.]_ We are grateful to the late AW for his legacy of £15,000. Finally, we are most grateful to R G Paulley and Associates who have once again agreed to independently audit our accounts at no cost to ourselves. However, this will be the final year of their help as Mr Paulley will retire during the summer of 2024. hugely grateful to the team of volunteers who enable it to happen each month. 17 4 ## **Financial review** This year, it has been a struggle to keep the General Account in the black. Unfortunately, during December, the final payment of the 2023 Parish Share and boiler repairs at St Albans took the account into the red. It is encouraging that Gift Aided giving was slightly higher than last year although this, not unexpectedly, meant that collections and nongift aided giving were reduced somewhat. Donations into the General Account were substantially lower than last year, which appears to be partly due to people choosing to donate to the Roof Fund or to community activities such as Thursdays Together and Holiday Tuesdays. Utility bills show an expected slight increase but other expenditure was similar to last year. The hall showed a profit of just over £2,000 but the revenue from hall users needs to increase significantly if we are to afford the repairs required to replace the flat roof (which is currently leaking), refurbishment of the female toilets and a replacement the water heater. We are grateful to Southampton City Council who once again provided a grant towards the cost of maintaining St. Mary’s Churchyard. Over the year we came together for various services and worship activities to mark special or significant occasions and aimed at being both a comforting presence for those familiar with these services and a missional opportunity to reach those in the community who may be new to them. These included our annual All Souls and observance of Remembrance Sunday (with active involvement of the local Beavers, Cubs and Scouts and representation from the nearby Gurdwara). In September Bishop Debbie joined us to celebrate the baptism, renewal of baptismal vows and confirmation of 7 candidates. During Holy Week we offered a range of worship and reflection: a creative and reflective service to mark the last hour at the cross, a Taizé service, Stations of the Cross, a Maundy Thursday communion. After a low attended Easer vigil the year before, we refreshed the way Easter was celebrated. We offered an Easter breakfast, followed by lighting the Paschal candle outside and then moved, accompanied by a South African song of praise, into the church where we continued the service. 16 **In Advent** we offered two Carol services, at St Alban’s with 54 people attending, and St Mary’s with 45 people attending. The services spoke to different demographics and were well received. Thanks to Laura Hewitt and Gwilym Stone who planned and led the services and all who contributed to them. **Christmas Eve** fell on a Sunday which made it extra busy - a big thank you to all involved. The **Christingle** services were well attended, 62 children and 84 adults at St Alban’s, and 18 children, 83 adults at St Mary’s. 47 people attended the **midnight communion** service at St Mary’s. Then on **Christmas Day** , as has become tradition, it was a joy to celebrate at St Albans with the Baptist Church (52 people). The roof on the Hall will require replacing soon, as well as other refurbishment such as the female toilets, therefore during 2024 the PCC and hall users will be exploring future funding options. ## **Friends of St Mary’s and Friends of St Alban’s** There were no specific Friends of St Mary’s events, as the focus has been on the Roof Appeal. There were also no Friends of St Alban’s activities during the year – reflection on how to relaunch and engage with the changing wider community around St Alban’s is needed. ## **Deanery Synod** The Synod met on three occasions during 2023, including at St Alban’s in October. Presentations topics included The Role of “Comms” in Sharing The Good News, Environmental Stewardship, Making Church Accessible for All. The Synod received regular updates on clergy movements, pastoral reorganisations such as the merger of the Parishes of Millbrook and Freemantle, and feedback from Deanery Representatives on Diocesan Synod. Home communion continued with those unable to get out, by the clergy and Ann Lewin. The members of our congregation with **Bishop's Commission for Mission** continued with in their various ministries within the Parish. Ann Lewin has the BCM (Worship), and leads the Ministry of the Word in the 10.15 service at St Alban’s and devises and leads worship on other occasions. Ann also preaches at intervals. 6 15 As well as the Parish activities the Church and Community Room are also well used by a range of other community groups, such as City Life Church, Frontline Debt advice, Heart and Voice Choir, Fitness Class, and as concert venue for Southampton University Music Group and others. ## **St Mary's Church** ## **Report on the Fabric, Fixtures and Grounds** As mentioned in the finance report, much work has been done this year to raise funds to repair the roof. This included concerts, quiz night, ride & stride, cream teas, as well as obtaining several grants. Our Curates attended an award ceremony in London after St Mary’s won a national award worth £10,000. Building works are due to start in April 2024. ## **Churchyard** A loyal band of helpers meet each week on a Tuesday morning to tend to the churchyard. The DAC has granted a faculty to enable us to increase the size of the Garden of Remembrance, but work on this is being deferred until work on the roof is completed due to the placement of scaffolding. ## **Parish Hall / Community Hall** The parish Hall is well used by our regular lets: Squirrels/Beavers/ Cubs/Scouts/Explorers, Brownies, Westfield Drama, Pilates, and Hearing Dogs, plus we have had many one-off users running events ranging from classes for wreath making and cooking to celebration community events. Sarah Dockree and Mary Williams hold a BCM (Pioneering) and continue to be involved in various aspects of parish life, continually seeking to connect the church with the local community and ensure all we offer is reaching as many people as we can in relevant and effective ways. Gwilym Stone also has the BCM (Pioneering) and plans and leads some of the Threshold services. ## **Bible study** At the beginning of the year a group of people came together to learn more about the Bible and to enjoy fellowship. The group met first every Wednesday, and then every other Wednesday. It started with an introduction to the Bible, followed by a study on John 17. During Lent we stopped the Bible study and joined the Lent course ‘Bless the Lent we actually have’ created by Kate Bowler. After Easter the group studied the Gospel of Mark. We had a Christmas social, before the group stopped for the foreseeable future. ## **Prayer Corner** St Agnes Chapel was reimagined during the year to encourage its use as a prayer space throughout the week. One of our BCM’s had the idea how to enhance the prayer area and to create a space that speaks to the people and context the church is placed in. The area is in regular use and since we’ve made the changes our prayer group has grown. People also meet in the area for pastoral conversations on Thursdays and the plan is to use it for other prayer activities during the week. We honoured the past by displaying an image of the old St Agnes church with an explanation of its history as the forerunner to St Alban’s. 14 ## **Schools work** The clergy have been invited into all our local schools (Mansbridge, Swaythling, Bassett Green, and Cantell) to take assemblies. We welcomed Mansbridge for an Easter service at St Mary’s, as well as several year groups from Swaythling to St Alban’s for visits and a group from Year 7 at Cantell to learn more about Christianity and its impact on the community as part of their RE curriculum. Our curate, Daniela Eisentraeger, also had the privilege to speak at the Cantell Christmas concert. Peter Dockree and Daniela Eisentraeger continue to work with Southampton City Mission to support an after-school club at Mansbridge. These connections with our local schools have been pivotal in facilitating the growth of other activities for families in the parish. We have also continued to work closely with the family liaison workers at the schools as we seek to support some of the same families. Throughout 2023 Peter Dockree was a part of the governing body at Bassett Green. In September Gwilym Stone stepped down after 10 years as Chair of Governors at Mansbridge but remains on the governing body. Every Thursday morning we continued to welcome people to St Alban’s for hot drinks and toast, conversation and to offer various items of food to support those finding it difficult to make ends meet. Many came each week, some from time to time. Visitor numbers for food remain at 45-50 each week with several more coming just for company and coffee. At a practical level we provided a range of fresh and long-life foods, including surplus from local supermarkets. Each week limits are suggested based on what stock is available and to ensure fairness. crafts for family events or being at present activities and so many more roles besides – we couldn’t have the impact we do as a Parish without the commitment of so many. Thank you. ## **Safeguarding** The PCC was pleased to appoint Helen Parker as Parish Safeguarding Officer in April, filling a long-standing vacancy. Helen has been working with the Parish Safeguarding Administrator to refresh policies and procedures in line with the latest guidance and best practice for the PCC’s adoption. ## **St Alban's Church** ## **Report on the Fabric, Fixtures and Grounds** Following on from previous works last year on The Cave, a working party set to in May to redecorate the cave with fresh paint and new curtains to give the space a new lease of life. In November, high levels of rain caused problems in the basement with rising damp issues in the office. This became such a problem that the parquet flooring became regularly sodden. This resulted in the moving of the office functions upstairs to the vestry. The heavy rain and high winds over the winter caused the rear flat roof to leak over the staircase. The Quinquennial Inspection due for 2023 was postponed to 2024. At time of writing, the inspection has been completed and the report is anticipated to include recommendations to remedy the leak. We are in the process of applying for a faculty for a shed in the rear car park to store equipment for the youth group. The plan is to store equipment like the table tennis, table football and other bits which are currently stored in the church. An application to the Council to grant permission is also in progress. 8 13 **Crafternoons** – these continued fortnightly throughout term time and have become a regular community of people who enjoy meeting together to craft, chat and eat cake! Friendships have been forged and skills shared as well as providing a place for people to come together. ## **for Halloween** We opened the community room at St Albans, on what was a very wet evening, for anyone who was out trick or treating and wanted a break, or anyone who was at home and valued having somewhere warm and welcoming to come along to. Yet again, the event proved popular with people who popped in for varying amounts of time. It provided a great opportunity for the church to be a place of light on an evening that can be a dark and difficult for many. **Cooking Group** – Thanks to the generous grant from Third Age Millennial Fund we were able to invite 7 people to a fortnightly cooking group in St Alban’s Community Room from October – November. This came about following requests from people we had met at Thursdays Together and a realisation that many people are looking for ways to increase their confidence and have opportunities to do things with others. The course was facilitated by an external tutor with volunteers from the church present to build on relationships and work alongside the group. There was very positive feedback from participants and a high attendance rate. Funding remains for further groups during 2024. The PCC are immensely grateful to all who give their time and energy to the activities and events which happen in the Parish – whether playing music at a service, keeping the kitchen stocked up, preparing We work closely with **Frontline Debt Advice** and Dominic Williams is present most weeks to chat to people as needed, which has proved a vital service for many who come. An opportunity to light candles and place prayers in a box to be prayed during the week was offered during the year and this has been well received, with a real hunger to engage in conversations, and sometimes prayer, with volunteers. We will continue to explore ways of connecting with this congregation more over the coming year as this community develops. We are really grateful to all the volunteers who make this happen every week, as well as countless others who collect food, contribute financially and pray for Thursday mornings. In the summer term we were made aware of a need at a local primary school where staff were being impacted by the cost of living crisis. The school approached the church to ask if it was able to suggest any ways of helping – as a result we were able to secure a grant to extend the work of Thursdays Together to set up a small “community larder” for the school community in the staffroom. This also contained information about Thursdays Together and other local agencies and sources of support as well as details of activities in the parish. 12 9 ## **Youthwork and “The Cave”** In March the rear car park at St Alban’s was used for 3 evenings, inviting local young people to come and play games and enjoy free food and drink, as well as share their ideas about how they would like to see a youth space develop. In August there was a weekly presence on Daisy Dip (linking with Friends of Daisy Dip’s community picnics “Dipnics”) offering activities and games to older children and young people, as well as the opportunity to chat to parents. In December we welcomed over 30 young people to a Christmas BBQ and firepit in the car park where it was wonderful to see young people we knew and those we hadn’t met before coming together to enjoy a fun evening. From November we have been running the youth events at St Albans once a month on the last Saturday. The aim of these is to continue to build relationships with young people. These events feature a variety of activities, including a BBQ, firepit and Basketball in the rear car park and a variety of indoor activities ranging from craft tables to table football and challenges that have to be completed in a minute. These challenges have proved to be popular and are a good way of the young people gathering and chatting together as they try them. Mary Williams has worked hard to make the Cave an attractive space and this includes new curtains along with some lamps. Attendance has varied from 11-30. We have been blessed with a great Team of regular volunteers with different skills and experience but would value some younger volunteers too. We sent 2 volunteers on a First Aider at work course. **Friday Lunch Club for over 50s** continued to welcome 25-30 people every month from the local community for a home cooked meal and warm welcome. We continued to welcome new people throughout the year and at Christmas celebrated Christmas dinner with all the trimmings in the church itself. We continue to deliver meals to a few people who are unable to get to the lunches and are grateful for all those who cook for this every month and who collect folk who come or deliver meals. ## **Mini Marvels** The group has welcomed between 8 and 15 families each week throughout the year for play, snacks, crafts, stories and songs and many of these families have then come along to other events as well. However, at the time of writing this report, the group has ceased meeting due to a change in circumstances for those leading it, but we look forward to exploring more ways of connecting during this vital phase of families lives in the future. These were held for 5 weeks of the summer holidays following generous funding from individuals and the Third Age Millennial Fund. Each week families were able to enjoy a variety of games and activities, inside and outside, including foam archery, pool, table tennis, board games, toddler toys, Lego and basketball. This was followed by a home cooked meal and then a film for anyone who wanted to stay. These events proved really popular with local families and at the final one over 100 people attended.
