WIGTON ST MARY'S PAROCHIAL CHURCH COUNCIL
ANNUAL REPORT AND FINANCIAL STATEMENTS
ST
FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 DECEMBER 2025
Aim and purpose8
St Mary's Parochial Church Council {PCC} had the responsibility of Cowoperating with the
incumbent during 2025 in promoting in the ecclesiastical parish, the whole mission of the
Church, pastoral, evangelisti¢, social and ecumenical. On the 8th of October 2024 Reverend
Corrie was licensed as Priest in Charge of St Mary's, Wigton.
The PCC is also specifically responsible for the maint8nance of St Mary's Church.
Objectlves and actlvltle8
The PCC is committed to enabling as many people as PO88ible to worship at our chU￿h and
to become part of the parish community of St Mary's. The PCC maintains an overview of
worship throughout the parish and makes suggestions on how the servi¢e$ can involv8 the
many groups that live within our parish. Our services and worship put faith into practice
through prayer and scripture, sacrament and music.
When planning our actlvities for the year, we have consldered the Commission's guidance
on public b8nefit and the supplementary guidance on charities for the advancement of
religion. In particular, we try to enable people from all walks of life, to live out their faith as
part of our parlsh community through..
Worship and prayer., learning about the gospel; and developing th8 knowledge of the
Christian word.
Provision of pastoral care for people living in the parish.
Missionary and outreach work.
To facilitate this work, it Is important that we maintain the fabric of St Mary's Church.
Achievements and performance
During 2025 the taking of wafers and wine by intinction or from the common cup continued,
according to personal choice.
Worshlp and prayer
The PCC is keen to offer a range of services ovèr the course of the year, that our community
finds both beneficial and spiritually fulfilling. For example, Holy Communion and Evening
Prayer provide a quiet and reflective environment for worship while opportunities are
provided for people to engage in worship and fellowship such as that provided by the Parish
Eucharist each Sunda

Holy Communion is ￿lebrated every Tuesday at 9.45am (Book of Common Prayer 1662)
and Wednesday at 12.45pm. On Sundays Holy Communion (Book of Common Prayer,
1662) at 8.00am, Parish Eucharist with hymns and Sunday School (held in choir vestry) at
9.30am (Sung Mattins on 5th Sunday). Evening Prayer (Book of Common Prayer 1662) is
held at 6.30pm each Sunday.
All are welcome to attend any of our services.
In 2025 there were 126 parishioners on the Electoral Roll.
The usual Sunday attendance numbers started to improve with an average of 80 adults and
13 children.
The Church
Reverend Richard Co￿le was assisted by Rev8rend Paul Amesen who has Pemission to
Officiate granted by the bishop.
The Sunday School continued during 2025 at the same time as the Parish Eucharist on
Sunday momings at 9.30am. The Sunday School is led by Mrs Esther Hudson along with a
number of volunteers helping on a rota basis.
During the year there were 27 baptisms, 2 weddings and 11 funerals in church with a further
7 funerals taken by the clergy of the parish at crematoria, graveside and cemetery Chapel.
There is a very active choir which rehearsès on Wednesday evenings under the direction of
David Shingler, Church Organist. The Harrison and Harrison organ is a Grade Il" listed
organ on th8 National Pipe Organ Register.
In 2015 a website for St Mary's Church was set up and Can be found at
www.stma
swi
ton.or
.uk and information can also be found on 'A Church Near You,.
A bible study group met al various houses in Ihe parish.
There is a very dedicated Mothers, Union branch which nom)ally meets once a month in the
church.
We had a new peal of bells installed for the Millennium and they are rung on Sundays, when
s8Nices are held, and on special occasions.
The church was used by several groups, including Wigton Choral Society and some
charitable organisations as a centre for coordinating public colleGtion days.
Pastoral care
Some members of our parish are unable to attend church due to sickness or age. When
requested, the clergy vislted church members, to celebrate communion with them either at
their homes or in hospital.

Safeguarding
The PCC has taken note of its duty under section 5 of the Safeguarding and Clergy
Discipline Measure 2016 and it is the opinion of the PCC that it has complied with the duty.
A revised Safeguarding Policy was adopted on 5th MarGh 2019, a copy of which can be
found on St Mary's website.
Risk assessments were Carried out regularly to ensure that the church complied with all
Health and Safety requirernents. The latest risk assessment policies are published on the
Notice Boards in church.
The Parish Safeguarding Officer is Mrs Denise Richardson whose contact details can be
founé on various notices in church and on the St Mary's Parish Church, Wigton website.
Mission and evangelism
In previous years the clergy visited the schools in the area, and the schoolchildren
occasionally came into the church to have a look around the building, with the Vicar on hand
to answer questions. School assemblies and special services W￿re also held in church from
time to time during 2025.
It was wonderful to see Wigton Infant School, Thomlinson Junior School and Nelson
Thomlinson School holding Carol Services, special services and Nelson Thomlinson School
holding their Founders Day Service in St Mary's once again.
Our parish bulletin is normally distributed monthly free of charge to all parishioners who
request il and is also available in Church. Copies are also posted on St Mary's website along
with the weekly sheet. The bulletin keeps our parishioners informed of the important matters
affecting our Church.
St Mary's Carols by Candlelight was held and a very popular Nativity servi￿ was performed
by members of the Sunday School on Christmas Eve.
Ecumenical relationships
The Church is a member of Churches Together in Wigton. Ajoint Carol SeNice for the town
was held in 2025. In 2019 the church joined the Solway Mission Community.

examine the accounts under section 145 of the 2011 AGt-
follow the procedures laid down in the General Directions given by the Charity
Commissioners section 145(5)Ib) of the 2011 Act,. and
state whether particular matters have come to my attention.
Basis of Independent Examinerfs Statement
My examination was Ca￿led out in accordance with the General Directions given by the Charty
Commission.
An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of
the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or
disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters.
The prO￿dureS undertaken do not provide all the eviden￿ that would be required in a full audit, and
consequently I do not express an audit opinion on the accounts.
Independent EXamine￿S Statement
In connection with my examination, no matters have come to my attention..
which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements
to keep accounting records in accordance with s.130 of the 2011 Act,. and
to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with the
accounting requirements of the 2011 Aot have not been met., or
2. to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding
of the accounts to be reached.
