Eduardo departs after 13 years in total, 2 years as President and 3 years as Past President and we would like very much to acknowledge his presence and impact in particular in the change management and realignment following independence from support of founding College of Optometrists.
There will be a postal election following the Dublin Meeting to establish the new Board and in particular the Vice President.
## Secretariat
The Academy is managed by a part-time consultant, fulfilling the role of Academy Manager, Ms Kelli Smyth).
The EAOO pays for the services, based on a maximum of 15 +/- hours/week. In addition, the Association of Optometrists Ireland (AOI) provides administrative financial services to the EAOO to support their organisational operations in certain areas. Eugene Lynch as IT consultant. The EAOO pays the AOI for the services, based on a maximum of 4-5 days/month.
Strategic decisions on the direction and development of the Academy are taken by the full Trustee Board which also reviews the financial performance of the organisation. The Board have nominated an Executive Committee in order to streamline processes. The Executive includes the President, the Vice President, the Immediate Past President, the Treasurer and Education Committee Chair.
## Objectives and Activities
- The Objects of the Academy set out in its Memorandum and Articles of Association are the conservation and improvement of human vision for the benefit of the public including but not limited to:
- The development of the scientific knowledge of optometry and optics
- The advancement and promotion of education and research into optometry and optics and related subjects; and
- The promotion for the public benefit of the science and practice of optometry and optics, of professional competence and conduct on the part of its members
## Conference 2021
In 2020 the Academy postponed its Conference in Helsinki due to the Global COVID-19 Pandemic. Financially, give the circumstances and dramatically reduced income potential we would regard the conference as successful as the EAOO profit share was after all refunds and costs shows to EAOO profit €3979,92 EUR excl. VAT 24 %.
The Conference programme committee put together a parallel virtual track of education.
- 603 delegates attended from 39 countries to hear 35 delivered CE hours with 15 posters.
- As has become customary there was a joint symposium with the American Academy of Optometry with 278 attendees and 252 on-line delegates for each of the sessions Friday 23[rd] 14.30-16.00 and 16.30-18.00 respectively.
- We were happy to host seminars by Essilor, Hoya and Alcon.
- EssilorLuxottica lecture on refraction technology and methodology and featured top professionals Mark A. Bullimore and Pete S. Kollbaum.
- Alcon's lecture was focused on the future of contact lenses and water surface technologies. The lecture speaker is Mai Pham
- HOYA is hosted an hour long Satellite Symposium devoted to myopia control on Saturday 24th. The event featured presentations from Prof. Carly Lam and Prof. Bruce Evans.
Good feedback has been universal especially the quality of IT delivery and support to both delegate and speakers. Because of time zone differences some presentations were pre recorded. Members of the EAOO Board of Trustees moderated the sessions introducing speakers, helping them keep to time and moderating the Q&A sessions.

_The moderator did an exceptional job. Sorry that I wasn't able to attend many sessions, as the 10 hour time difference was an obstacle. Having the presentations available for 30 days is great. I did manage to catch part of Elaine and Kelly's symposium talks, but had a conflict with the surgeon's presentation on cataract and dementia. Under the circumstances, you all did great. We would have loved to see Helsinki, but there will be other opportunities.”_
Statement of Trustees Responsibilities for the Financial Statements
The Trustees (who are also Directors of The Academy for the purposes of Company law) are responsible for preparing the Annual Report and the financial statements in accordance with applicable law and United Kingdom Accounting Standards (United Kingdom Generally Accepted Accounting Practice). Company law requires the Trustees to prepare financial statements for each financial year which give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the charitable company and the incoming resources and application of resources, including the net income or expenditure, of the charitable company for that period.

In preparing these financial statements the Trustees are required to:
- select suitable accounting policies and then apply them consistently.
- observe the methods and principles in the Charities SORP (Statements of Recommended Practice);
- make judgements and estimates that are reasonable and prudent;
- state whether applicable UK Accounting Standards have been followed, subject to any material departures disclosed and explained in the financial statements; and
- prepare the financial statements on the going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to presume that the charitable company will continue in operation.
The Trustees are responsible for keeping adequate accounting records that reveal with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial situation of the charitable company and enable them to ensure that the financial statements comply with the Companies Act 2006. They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the charitable company, and hence for taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities.
The Trustees are responsible for the maintenance and integrity of the corporate and financial information included on the charitable company’s website. Legislation in the United Kingdom governing the preparation and dissemination of the financial statements may differ from legislation in other jurisdictions.

## **1. Accounting policies**
## **a) Statutory information**
European Academy of Optometry and Optics is a charitable company limited by guarantee and is incorporated in England and Wales. The registered office address is 42 Craven Street, London, WC2N 5NG.
## **b) Basis of preparation**
The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2015) - (Charities SORP FRS 102), the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (September 2015) and the Companies Act 2006.
Assets and liabilities are initially recognised at historical cost or transaction value unless otherwise stated in the relevant accounting policy or note.
## **c) Public benefit entity**
The charitable company meets the definition of a public benefit entity under FRS 102.
## **d) Going concern**
In line with the explanation in the Trustees’ report on page 7, the Academy expects to increase its net assets due the new approach to the conference and increased membership renewals and therefore continues to adopt the going concern basis of accounting in preparing the financial statements.
The Trustees do not consider that there are any sources of estimation uncertainty at the reporting date that have a significant risk of causing a material adjustment to the carrying amounts of assets and liabilities within the next reporting period.
## **Grant income**
- **e)** Grant income is recognised in the period in which it is receivable. Voluntary and membership income is included in incoming resources when receivable. **Expenditure**
- **f)** Expenditure is recognised in the period in which it is incurred. Expenditure includes attributable VAT which cannot be recovered. **Governance costs**
- Governance costs are the costs associated with the governance arrangements of the charity, relating

constitutional, statutory and regulatory requirements.

## **h) Unrestricted funds**
Unrestricted funds are donations and other incoming resources received or generated for the charitable purposes.
## **i) Monetary assets and liabilities in foreign currencies**
Monetary assets and liabilities denominated in foreign currencies are translated into sterling at the rates of exchange ruling at the balance sheet date. Transactions in foreign currencies are translated into sterling at the rate ruling on the date of the transaction. Exchange gains and losses are recognised in the Statement of Financial Activities.
## **j) Pension costs**
No pension costs are now paid. Previously, the seconded employees were eligible to join the defined contribution pension scheme, operated by the College of Optometrists. The assets of the scheme were held separately from those of the College in an independently administered fund. The pension cost charge represented contributions payable under the scheme by the Academy to the fund. The Academy had no liability under the scheme other than for the payments of those contributions.

The charity has no employees.
The charity has been managed by freelance consultants reporting to the Trustees.
Travel and accommodation expenses were paid directly by the European Academy or reimbursed to eight Trustees (2019- eight) totalling £0 (2020: £1,026) during the year. All expenses were incurred in the course of duties as Trustees. None of the Trustees received a salary or any other benefits from employment with the charity in the year (2020: £nil). No charity Trustee received payment for professional or other services supplied to the charity (2020: £nil).

Rob Hogan, one of the Trustees of the Academy is also a Trustee of the College of Optometrists. The College of Optometrists has provided an interest free loan to EAOO. The balance of £20,000 is only repayable if the Academy was to be wound up, which is not anticipated currently. The Trustees created a restricted fund for the repayment of the loan if the need arises in the future.
## **11. Legal status of the charity**
The charity is a company limited by guarantee and has no share capital. The liability of each member in the event of winding up is limited to £1.
## **12. Reserves Policy**
It is the policy of the Board of Trustees to hold in reserve sufficient resources to cover any financial liabilities and also the long term College of Optometrists loan.

We are dually pleased to be welcomed once again in Dublin but more than that to be able to meet face to face once again. 210 delegates at our first face to face meeting in 2 years is a huge success given the trials and tribulations of planning and COVID regulations that have bedevilled practitioners, educators, manufacturers and suppliers. We have been at the mercy of health regulators, governments and in the case of Dublin, the proposed venue itself. (Later today Leinster will face Toulouse in the Rugby Championship at Aviva stadium in the semi finals). Thanks to some deft footwork by Martin and the AOI team we were able to take the gamble that Aviva would seek to cancel our reservation. A decision that was in fact, only made last week when the semi finalists were known for sure.
We at the European Academy are indebted to the work done by the AOI Conference team headed up by Martin O’Brien, the Conference Secretariat Agenda Communications, our Board of Trustees and our Education Committee Chair Jose-Manuel González Meijome. Without the whole team and Martin in. particular we would not be where we are today. The EAAO itself is represented by our Administrator Ms Kelli Smyth based in the AOI Offices who host us as secretariat.

**Welcome to the Annual Meeting of the European Academy of Optometry & Optics held jointly as is our custom, with the spring meeting of the European Council of Optometry & Optics**
We are pleased to have drawn together some of the best clinicians, educators, researchers, scientists and upcoming students from across Europe and beyond.
There are 24+ hours of education divided into Plenary Sessions here in the Herbert room and AOI sponsored Kevin Culliton Lectures in the Pembroke Room, 12+ hours of special seminars, 18 hours of workshops ranging from foreign body removal to myopia control as well as the discussion platforms that are the SIG’s.
The workshops have been delivered in conjunction with Technology University Dublin showcasing their new campus at Grangegorman and led by a stalwart of the Academy Dr Declan Hovenden. The National Optometry Centre is a well designed and well equipped institution with ambition. That bodes well for the wider role of developing optometry in Ireland.
The EAOO is committed to the understanding and implementation of myopia control with joint policy agreed between ECOO and EAOO and we have foremost experts bringing their research expertise in local James Loughman and Mark Bullimore from the USA.
Inevitably there are also presentations as our professions, patients and regulators have navigated the COVIOD pandemic and we look forward to their insights.

Optometry and in particular their representatives the current President Dr Tim McMahon of Chicago Illinois and regular EAOO Attendee Dr Brett Bence. This year we have drawn together experts Langis Michaud and Tim McMahon on the subject of keratoconus who will approach the subject from a recognition, diagnosis and first steps management “Prevalence, Prognosis and Pathways” moderated by Dr Bence.
It only remains to welcome you all to Dublin, to hope you make the most of one of Europe’s most entertaining and social cities, I know I will…..
