Churchwardens’ report 2025
This year has been another busy for the Churchwardens of Holy Trinity.
We started the year with a Candlemas Supper, held in the church. Twenty -nine people joined together in the church for Fish and Chips and a quiz hosted by Rev Juliet.
Lent started with our annual Beetle Drive and Pancake Party. As always this was well supported and great fun. The competition was fierce but a worthy winner was finally crowned. Our Lent lunches took place in the vicarage this year which was considerably warmer than the church!
March also saw our first evensong at Holy Trinity for quite a while and although the congregation was small the service was really beautiful and very much enjoyed for those who came.
The local cub scouts came to the church for a sleep over at Holy Trinity on 7th March. About 150 boys and girls came along and it was reported that they all had a wonderful (if a little scary time!)
Holy Week was a wonderful spiritual time led by Rev Juliet. Small, intimate,services were held twice per day, including the Stations of the Cross and taize music leading to the sorrow of Maundy Thursday and Good Friday with the joy of Easter Saturday and Easter Sunday.
Our patronal festival lunch took place in June and shortly after Rev Juliet left us to take up a position in Edinburgh. We were all very sad to see her go, but her inspiring leadership made us all the more determined to keep up the momentum set by her and we have continued to work together to make Jesus know and Holy Trinity Church to thrive.
In August we hosted a Mexican Art Festival, which was very successful and encouraged us to formalise the arrangements for letting the church to groups. This has led to the booking of the church for a candlelit concert which was so successful there will be 3 further concerts in 2026.
Reverend John MacKenzie became our Parish Priest-in-charge in September, as well as Assistant Rural Dean and we have benefited from his support and care since then.
Trudi stepped down as Churchwarden in September. Alyson Brinsley, who was already taking on large parts of the role to help out, was formally elected as Churchwarden in October.
A full programme of services were arranged for Christmas, including Salvation Army Carols, Christingle, Children’s Nativity Service, Nine Lessons and Carols, Midnight Mass. The Christmas Tree Festival is now an annual institution and we have already had enquiries for next year.
The Parish Priest and Community Missioners position has been advertised and we pray that a new vicar will come to lead us forward in 2026
We have all worked hard on fundraising this year with many events being held in church. We have had a number of Coffee Shops; opened our doors to just about every cruise ship passenger passing through Portland Port; celebrated the 80th Anniversary of VE day; welcomed the Wareham Wailers to the church and served drinks from our bar; hired the charity seafront stall on the seafront and raised an amazing amount of money; held a fund raising concert, organised by Brian Crump and starring Gary Smith and Nicky Footer and many others. Our Christmas Tree Festival was bigger and better than last year and will go from strength to strength in the future I am sure. Our smartie tube fund raising event was also a huge success and this will be repeated in 2026 and thereafter. In total our fund raising events raised just over £3,000.
At harvest time, Trudi and Jen made a presentation to increase giving via the Parish Giving Scheme and we have re-introduced taking the collection during the offertory hymn and at all additional services.
## Fabric
At the end of the year we found a number of leaks in the roof above the lady chapel and main altar. Works have been carried out on a temporary basis to protect the fabric of the church by installing a tarpaulin.

## **Financial Review 2025**
The financial position at Holy Trinity Church has held steady during what has been a challenging year financially alongside the continual maintenance requirements of a Grade II Listed building.
Losing a parish priest usually impacts on income and finances but Holy trinity has remained strong and has managed to cover its monthly costs and increase its Parish Share giving by £5,500 although part of the increased share payment was due to a generous donation. The General Fund ended the year with a small loss of £182. The Restricted Fund expenditure exceeded income by £36,789, but this was partially offset by the drawdown of £12,000 from investments holdings, resulting in a loss of £24,789.
Voluntary Receipts were up 11%. Regular giving is made via Parish Giving Scheme, Standing orders and envelopes. The church is open daily and contactless and a secure cash box is set up for daily visitors. Holy Trinity attracts holiday makers during the summer and benefits from cruise ship visitors.
Fundraising income remained steady reflecting the success of The Christmas Tree Festival, a Concert, a Seafront stall, Lent Smartie Tubes and various coffee morning events. Many Thanks must go to all those who help to make these events happen and which helps to raise much needed funds as well as helping to bring the community and visitors in to the church.
Grants were received from the local council towards the parish gates and from National Churches for church repairs.
Other receipts included £4k in reclaimed VAT on church repairs. This will no longer be available from March 2026 which will be unfortunate given that Holy Trinity is about to embark on its re-organisation works.
Investment drawdown of £12,000 was made during the year to replenish the mission fund which had been partly used for the new sound system in 2024.
During the year the PCC agreed to use accumulated dividends in its Youth Investment account to purchase a minibus for the parish school of Holy Trinity. This has enabled all children to participate in a greater range of activities. The church will continue to have close links with the school. Costs are recorded under Youth Work in the Activity costs section.
Running costs have been tightly controlled and generally are in line with previous expenditure. Financial procedures have been reviewed and updated during the year.
The parish share for 2025 was £45,053 after a deprivation area allowance was granted. During the year Holy Trinity contributed £28,500 (62%) towards the share. The parish share continues to be a major challenge for the church.

Post year end the PCC agreed transfers from Investments to replenish the Fabric, Morrice and Reorder cash funds which as at year end shows negative balances. Investments have not performed well during the year. The Market value fell by £42k (4%). A review of Investments is currently in progress.
The investment of a new sound system in 2024 has been a success for all services and concerts held at Holy Trinity during the year. A recent private concert held at Holy Trinity commented that this church had one of the best sound systems they had come across and they have signed up to do three more concerts in 2026.
Plans have now been passed by the DAC for the proposed Kitchen and accessible toilets. Once these works are completed it is anticipated that Holy Trinity will become the ideal venue for more concerts and will also provide a more usable space for the local community and other organisations to use and enjoy.
This in turn will help to draw people into the building for various reasons and not only will it help to increase income it will also help ‘Make Jesus Known’. It is therefore feasible that over the next couple of years Holy Trinity will grow and funds will be sufficient to pay the Parish Share in Full.

## Notes to the Financial Statements
## Accountng Policies
The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the Church Accounting Regulations 2006 together with applicable accounting standards and the SORP 2005.
As receipts for the year amounted to less than £250,000 the financial statements have been prepared on a receipts and payments basis. These have been reviewed by an Independent examiner whose report is attached.
## Funds
Holy Trinity does not have any **endowment funds** .
_**Unrestricted**_ **funds** are classed as general funds which can be used for PCC ordinary purposes.
_**Restricted funds**_ represent a) income from trusts which may be expended only on those restricted objects provided in the terms of the trust or bequest, and b) donations or grants received for a specific object or invited by the PCC for a specific object. These funds may only be expended on the specific object for which they were given. Any balance remaining unspent at the end of the year must be carried forward as a balance on that fund. All investments are invested separately and interest applied accordingly.
## Incoming resources
All income is recognised when it is receivable and accounted for gross. Gift Aid for the last quarter and for small donations made during the year were not claimed and received until 2026.
## Resources expended
Grants and donations are accounted for when paid over, or when awarded, if that award creates a biding or constructive obligation on the PCC. All other expenditure is recognised when it is incurred and is accounted for gross.
## Fixed assets
Movable church furnishings held by the vicar and churchwardens on special trust for the PCC and which require a faculty for disposal are inalienable property, listed in the church’s inventory, which can be inspected (at any reasonable time). For anything acquired prior to 2000 there is insufficient cost information available and therefore such assets are not valued in the financial statements. Subsequently no individual item has cost more than £2,500 so all such expenditure has been written off when incurred.
Investments are valued at market value as at 31[st] December.

## **INDEPENDENT EXAMINER’S REPORT TO THE TRUSTEES OF THE PAROCHIAL CHURCH COUNCIL OF THE ECCLESIASTICAL PARISH OF HOLY TRINITY WITH ST NICHOLAS, WEYMOUTH (Registered Charity No. 1134026)**
I report on the accounts of the Parish of Holy Trinity with St Nicholas, Weymouth for the year ended 31[st] December 2025 which are set out on pages 3 to 9.
## **Respective Responsibilities of Trustees and Examiner**
The church’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The church’s trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144(2) of the Charities Act 2011 (‘the 2011 Act’) and that an independent examination is needed.
It is my responsibility to:
- Examine the accounts (under section 145 of the 2011 Act);
- To follow the procedures laid down in the General Directions given by the Charity Commissioners (under section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act); and
- To state whether particular matters have come to my attention.
## **Basis of Independent Examiner’s report**
My examination was carried out in accordance with the general Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a ‘true and fair view’ and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.
## **Independent Examiners’ statement**
In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention:
1. Which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements
- to keep accounting records in accordance with section 130 of the 2011 Act; and
- to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with the accounting requirements of the 2011 Act have not been met; or
2. to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

## Notes to the Financial Statements
## Accountng Policies
The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the Church Accounting Regulations 2006 together with applicable accounting standards and the SORP 2005.
As receipts for the year amounted to less than £250,000 the financial statements have been prepared on a receipts and payments basis. These have been reviewed by an Independent examiner whose report is attached.
## Funds
Holy Trinity does not have any **endowment funds** .
_**Unrestricted**_ **funds** are classed as general funds which can be used for PCC ordinary purposes.
_**Restricted funds**_ represent a) income from trusts which may be expended only on those restricted objects provided in the terms of the trust or bequest, and b) donations or grants received for a specific object or invited by the PCC for a specific object. These funds may only be expended on the specific object for which they were given. Any balance remaining unspent at the end of the year must be carried forward as a balance on that fund. All investments are invested separately and interest applied accordingly.
## Incoming resources
All income is recognised when it is receivable and accounted for gross. Gift Aid for the last quarter and for small donations made during the year were not claimed and received until 2026.
## Resources expended
Grants and donations are accounted for when paid over, or when awarded, if that award creates a biding or constructive obligation on the PCC. All other expenditure is recognised when it is incurred and is accounted for gross.
## Fixed assets
Movable church furnishings held by the vicar and churchwardens on special trust for the PCC and which require a faculty for disposal are inalienable property, listed in the church’s inventory, which can be inspected (at any reasonable time). For anything acquired prior to 2000 there is insufficient cost information available and therefore such assets are not valued in the financial statements. Subsequently no individual item has cost more than £2,500 so all such expenditure has been written off when incurred.
Investments are valued at market value as at 31[st] December.

## **INDEPENDENT EXAMINER’S REPORT TO THE TRUSTEES OF THE PAROCHIAL CHURCH COUNCIL OF THE ECCLESIASTICAL PARISH OF HOLY TRINITY WITH ST NICHOLAS, WEYMOUTH (Registered Charity No. 1134026)**
I report on the accounts of the Parish of Holy Trinity with St Nicholas, Weymouth for the year ended 31[st] December 2025 which are set out on pages 3 to 9.
## **Respective Responsibilities of Trustees and Examiner**
The church’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The church’s trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144(2) of the Charities Act 2011 (‘the 2011 Act’) and that an independent examination is needed.
It is my responsibility to:
- Examine the accounts (under section 145 of the 2011 Act);
- To follow the procedures laid down in the General Directions given by the Charity Commissioners (under section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act); and
- To state whether particular matters have come to my attention.
## **Basis of Independent Examiner’s report**
My examination was carried out in accordance with the general Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a ‘true and fair view’ and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.
## **Independent Examiners’ statement**
In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention:
1. Which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements
- to keep accounting records in accordance with section 130 of the 2011 Act; and
- to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with the accounting requirements of the 2011 Act have not been met; or
2. to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
