CHARITY NUMBER 1133995

PARISH MISSION, VISION, AIMS AND GOALS

“The Parish of Sketty invites all to practise Christian faith, together serving God and our community by sharing the good news of Jesus”.

We seek to increase. our knowledge and sharing of Christ, doing all in His name for His glory. We continue to build on established mission activities while being open to embracing new ideas and initiatives.

Within our Parish we aim to offer:

welcome, worship, prayer, fellowship, listening, caring, and teaching

whilst also obeying Christ’s command “to go out into the world” to share His Word and compassion.

The Annual Vestry Meeting will take place on Thursday 29[th] April 2020 at 7:00pm online (Zoom link on Parish website),

Vicar’s Forward

Dear friends,

This has been the most extraordinary of years and normally we would have produced our multipage parish report. With so few of our groups meeting due to the pandemic this year it has not been possible. It does not however mean that nothing has happened. Far from it. It has been a year filled with new challenges and ways of working and it has shown what an extraordinary parish we are.

When the pandemic hit with its first lockdown in March 2020, services stopped and those groups which had managed to continue after the initial fears of the virus spread also finished. Easter was cancelled for the first time and it was a real struggle I know. The move to online was a slow process but we did manage it. Sister Marian learnt about Zoom, the Cafe Church Team learnt about video recording, production, Noel with music and getting videos on to YouTube. Sunday School with Wendy, Andrea, Alan and Viv went online. The weekly zoom services and daily Compline took so much work on the part of Sister Marian and Alan. We learnt so much as we got to grips with the new technology. There are still parishes that have not managed any online presence, so thank you all for meeting this challenge with such enthusiasm.

When we came out of the first lockdown, we were determined to start live services as soon as we could and this we did. With St Paul’s being the largest building, it was the easiest to make Covid safe. A one-way system, with signs, arrows, hand-gel, masks and disinfectant sprays were all put in place. The cleaning regime was vigorous with thanks to Warden Jane, Jude Gilbody and Thelma Pike for this constant work, essential, never seen but much appreciated by all who were able to safely attend our services. Also, Roger Pike for helping with the counting and banking and Fran, Mike and Ken our treasurer team.

Thanks to this we were able to open in July 2020 for private prayer only and then for communion in one kind. This continued until the October two week national lockdown finally closing due to the new variants after the Christmas Eve service.

The nature of the pandemic has meant that individuals like Jane Watkeys have had to take on so much and delegate carefully. Thank you to Jane and all who have taken on strange and unusual working practices to get things done.

2

ANNUAL REPORT 2020 PARISH OF SKETTY

Holy Trinity has not opened over the pandemic like many churches across the Diocese. We are now looking at the building which has a few issues with the lights, floor and flat roof that need to be sorted out before we can think of opening later in the year should conditions allow.

On the 26[th] of September Sister Marian was ordained Priest after many delays and rescheduling. Again, due to technology we were able to join her online but unfortunately without all of the celebrations we had planned to mark it with. There could have been no more difficult a time to be ordained but we are so happy to welcome Sister Marian to our altar at last. It has been a pleasure to share the priestly ministry with her over the last six months.

Food Bank has also been a central feature of the year. When the pandemic hit most of the food banks had to close due in the main to the age of the volunteers involved. The Christian founded HOP Foodbank in Sketty Park however was thankfully able to run through out. You the parishioners have been so supportive of this venture which has touched the lives of so many in our community when times have been so hard for them. Taking in the carrier bags full of food each day from the vicarage door has been a wonderful experience.

For myself being a hospital chaplain over this year has been a particular blessing for my ministry. At times it has been a very hard task especially during the main lockdown peaks. Thank you all for your prayers and support for myself, patients and staff during this very trying time.

Our Parish Centre has like most halls been closed. We did however open in January as a Vaccine Centre, supporting our next-door neighbour the doctor’s surgery. It has been a joy to be able to help in such a practical way. I know from the many expressions of thanks that our community has really appreciated the use of our facilities which have worked so well in adding the delivery of many thousands of vaccines. It is strange to think that despite the pandemic we have welcomed more people to the parish grounds than at another time be it for a vaccine or just to enjoy the grounds.

One of our groups that was slowed but not stopped was our ECO group. Despite the pandemic they have achieved so much completing then solar panels on the parish centre and planting an orchard – all while socially distancing. No mean feat.

Also thanks to Clive, Ray, his son and Roger for the hard work in the church grounds. Despite being set back by the initial lockdown they have managed to not only get it back into such a great condition but to push forward in longstanding jobs for example digging out stumps and roots that were undermining the De La Beche Rd. stretch of the graveyard wall.

All in all, there has been no year like this in anyone’s memory. I just want to add my thanks to you all for your prayers, patients, understanding and help in what we have attempted to do and hopefully achieved. Without you it would have been a very different year.

It has not been easy to reach everyone and I hope and pray that as things ease and we return to some form of normality that we can once again visit parishioners, gather together, sing to the Lord and physically share the peace, all things we miss so much.

I know these things are still on the horizon but the one thread that seems to have come through this year with us is that we have taken every opportunity given to us and we will still strive to do that as the future unfolds.

Every blessing

Vicar Robert

ANNUAL REPORT 2020 PARISH OF SKETTY

Our usual groups did not meet over the year or were severely restricted so the reports are brief.

Lunch Club

The nature of our vulnerable member meant that we could not meet over the year.

Mothers’ Union

Unfortunately, it was decided that we would be unable to continue our Mothers’ Union due to the reducing membership. In the spirit of Ministerial Areas and strength in numbers, it is hoped that we can join with St Hillary’s and benefit from being a much larger group.

MA Youth Club

Was not able to meet

Sunday School

Over the year a number of online Sunday School sessions were held with materials being posted to the children to make it as interactive as possible. Much work and preparation went into this with many Zoom meetings to arrange each one. Thank you, Wendy and team.

House Groups

Were unable to meet

Prayer Group

The group met in gardens when legally allowed and online.

P CC

The PCC once online over in 2020 and made decisions when necessary, by email.

ECO Group

This group did a great deal of work over the year. We completed the installation of solar panels on the Parish Centre and the installation of an orchard on the field. This involved the selection and installation of around 25 trees. To all of the Eco Group a special thankyou as not even a world wide pandemic could stop you

Parish Centre

The centre had to close but we were able to reopen in January as a Vaccine Centre. In collaboration with our local surgery, we were able to provide one of the first centres and have welcomed thousands of Sketty residents through our doors over the last three months.

Open the book

This could not take place due to the necessary restriction on school access.

ANNUAL REPORT 2020 PARISH OF SKETTY

2019 TO 2020

Below are some of reports which were able to be submitted for the previous year before we hit lockdown. We have included them as we were unable to produce a report in the same way last year and to give a more normal account of our activities.

TOTS on Tuesdays in the Parish Centre 2019

TOTS on Tuesdays continues to be a very successful Parish outreach group. TOTS is a Parent/Carer and Toddler Group whose aim is to reach out into the community by providing opportunities to foster friendship and support for parents, carers and very young children with a combined weekly term time average attendance of 25 adults and children during 2019. Meetings commence at 10am with a short informal service giving an opportunity to hear (and sing) some Christian stories. This is followed by a time for refreshments, play and fellowship and after nursery rhyme singing time the meetings finish at 11.30am.

(Prepared by Maureen Amner on behalf of the TOTS Team)

Sharing Together 2019

The Sharing Together group meets during term time on Wednesdays at 12:30 until 2:15pm. Whilst sharing lunch together the group aims to offer support, friendship and encouragement to those attending always based on Christian values and in a very informal and friendly setting.

The Lent study undertaken by the group in 2019 was based on the film The Greatest Showman and was very ably-led by Sian Parkhouse. Thank you, Sian. The course was well attended (10 people) and proved to be a very satisfying and moving experience. The music was truly amazing as was the discussion stimulated around the issue of equalities and acceptance in today’s society.

The group worked hard on sourcing items and filling 20 shoeboxes for the Operation Christmas Child appeal run by Samaritan’s Purse and the group wishes to thank those outside the group who contributed to this worthwhile appeal with toys, toiletries, wrapping paper and the shoeboxes themselves.

The group is continuing to meet in 2020 and will continue for as long as people need the group and the Christian support and encouragement it provides.

Bible Reading Fellowship (BRF) 2019

One of the many ways to encourage Bible reading and study in our churches is through the regular use and the guidance provided in the publications of the Bible Reading Fellowship. These publications are produced three times a year in January, May and September and are available to order through me. Those currently available to order are New Daylight, Guidelines and Day by Day with God.

New Daylight provides a very accessible and stimulating aid to spending time with God each day, learning more about the Christian faith through Bible study and encouraging prayer and building that relationship with Jesus – it is pocket or handbag sized and, at a push, can be used without a Bible at your side, so is great for travelling wherever you go.

8

ANNUAL REPORT 2020 PARISH OF SKETTY

Guidelines offers Bible study for today’s ministry and mission and is a much more challenging theological experience. This could well be worth a try if you feel ready to move on from New Daylight to a deeper study of the Bible. You will need dedication, though, and a Bible close at hand for these studies.

Day by Day with God is written especially for women and can provide a source of immense inspiration and strength during difficult times as well as sharing pleasure and encouragement in times of joy! Again, really worth a try.

Using the daily Bible reading notes from the Bible Reading Fellowship is an excellent way of keeping the focus of our lives on Jesus and building on our relationship with Him through daily reading, study and prayer. Please keep all those who write these notes for us in your prayers.

I thank you all for your continued support of BRF over the years and I hope that those of you who use these publications can recommend them to your friends throughout our Ministry Area churches, House Groups and those you know (friends or family) who are searching for the meaning of life or just trying to find ways to draw closer to Jesus

The Wattley Walks 2019

Because of relatively good summer weather we successfully completed all but one of the walks planned for 2019. Great thanks again to Ken Lewis and Stephen Miles for leading and helping with the recce walks.

Again this year we tried some new walks – Reynoldston to Puck’s Hollow and then Cefn Bryn (although only did the recce but a great walk for drier weather) and our mystery walk which took us to Felindre Reservoir ending with lunch in a pub in the village - all proved to be enjoyable. We still used past favourites such as Ilston Cwm, Llanmadoc Hill, Weobley Castle and the beautiful and challenging Whiteford Point – thanks for the singing from Maureen and Fred Amner’s young family as we battled darkness on this walk.

I am always amazed at the often-unlikely friendships forged and the joy created on the walks when we often have to battle against the failing light, tiredness etc. Such beautiful surroundings and the experience of God’s creation makes a huge impact on us all as we chat about faith, church and countryside matters. What a joy!

Probably the highlight of the year’s walks was the late September walk at the Felindre Reservoir on a Saturday – a beautiful walk up to the reservoir on really good paths and a varied route back down through woodland makes this a walk we would do again. A late lunch in the village pub was the icing on the cake. Thanks again to Stephen for all the background industrial history.

It is hoped to run the Wattley Walks again this Summer on the first Thursday of the month so look out for the programme or contact me for details. We usually meet at the Parish Centre Car Park at 6 pm prompt and there is often a range of routes we can follow depending on the ability of the group on the night.

House Groups 2019

The house groups in Sketty met regularly throughout 2019 studying a range of topics including Acts of the Apostles, 1 and 2 Kings, Mums Sharing Life supporting each other through the highs and lows of parenting, studying sermons from the Summit Church in North Carolina and the meaning of creation through the lens of the Climate Emergency - a wide range of topics with something for everyone.

9

ANNUAL REPORT 2020 PARISH OF SKETTY

In January 2019 a Prayer Course using material prepared and led by Pete Greig was offered to the Ministry area congregations and others following completion of the Alpha Course at the end of 2018. It was organised and supported by house group members again with a wonderful welcome and great support from St Hilary’s. The course proved to be a great challenge to our prayer lives and was enjoyable and again built and cemented relationships not only with Jesus but throughout the Ministry Area and with members of other churches.

The year ended with our 12[th] Annual Christmas Lunch at Nicholaston House for House Group members and friends. This year the Reverends Judith and Peter Phillips told us about their prison ministry – very interesting and indeed entertaining to have a male and female view of prison life and the needs of the people in our prisons.

The groups continue to meet to study, pray together and offer support and fellowship to each other. Current studies include: the Transformed Life course based on Ephesians 1-3 exploring who we are, where we belong and what we are living for, a study of John’s first letter, Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians and Tom Wright’s study on 1 Corinthians. House Groups are open to all and meet at various times and venues so if something appeals to you let me or one of the house group leaders know – Alan Griffiths, Karen Williams, Anne Penton or Jennifer Rudd.

Annual Report for Holy Trinity Church. 2019.

Our church services haven’t done so well recently especially the Wednesday morning we have a number of our members who find it difficult to come through an illness or have gone to Retirement Homes. Alan Griffiths also does the Morning Prayer service but not many come to that as there isn’t communion the Healing Service still takes place the Vicar takes that service and we do have a few members attend.

The Hot Cross Bun service went very well, as usual, we had a good number of adults and children and it was very interesting and tea and buns were enjoyed afterwards, the number attending this service is very encouraging more seem to come each year.

Our Holy “T” service hasn’t been very well attended so we have stopped it for a while.

During the month of August, we had the interior of the church painted so it looks nice and fresh again.

Harvest went well and we had a Messy Harvest and that was very well attended with lots of children and parents.

Our Carol Praise service was very different this year we had some readings but we also had some sketches which the adults took part in we also sang and the Handbell Group played, when we had finished, we had mince pies and tea.

A good number from St Paul’s joined us on Christmas morning we had very few children present this year some had gone away to families.

Iris Jones

Mothers Union Annual Report 2019

We had our A.G.M.in January chaired by our Vicar Robert. Iris Jones became Branch Leader, Anita Stock Secretary Viv Lewis. Programme Secretary and Clive Garrish Treasurer our Committee Members are Yvonne Garrish Biddy O’Kane and Joyce Phillips.

10

ANNUAL REPORT 2020 PARISH OF SKETTY

We have had some very good speakers again this year and we also went to Clyne Gardens and a visit to the Lamplighter in Bishopston.

Our Wave of Prayer service went well and quite a few members came and did the readings.

A few of us went to Brecon in May to the Diocesan Festival we went with Killay and shared their bus.

A few of us went in September to St Mary’s church to meet our World-Wide President Sheron Harper it was a nice afternoon.

Christmas came and we went out to lunch.

Iris Jones.

Parish Centre Report - Parish Centre PCC Sub-Committee 2019

Membership: Vicar (Chairperson), Mike Johns (Treasurer), Jayne Cooper (Parish Administrator), Jane Watkeys, Andrea Gould, Angela Ball. Kylie Davies has now left the group.

Aims: Considers practical matters relating to the Parish Centre and make policy recommendations about lettings, publicity and Centre use, including hire rates. The Committee meets twice a year.

The Parish Centre hosted approximately 10 Church Groups, 22 regular groups (such as The Gower Society, National Trust; National Osteoporosis Society) and 31 one-off events including, birthday parties, AGMs, a book launch and in August a musical event was held for people with Dementia. We also started ‘Cafe Church’ on the first Sunday of the month, which is proving to be very popular. Eco Church meetings also started this year. In January WOW held their last meeting after coming here for approximately 20 years. Weekends remain popular for birthday parties and one-off events. The hall is still in demand and a file is being held holding details of people who would like to hire the hall once is available.

It would be impossible for the hall to be hired out without the help of church members who kindly volunteer to open and close at all hours for us.

After 8 years of working at the Parish Centre, Tim Gale our Cleaner finished in November 2019. The following month Mark Davies joined us.
