ANNUAL REPORT OF THE PAROCHIAL CHURCH COUNCIL (THE TRUSTEES)
FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 DECEMBER 2024
Aims and Pur
oses
The Parochial Church Council IPCCI of St. John the Evangelist has the responsibility of co-operating with the
incumbent, the Rev'd Cathy Knight-scott, in promoting in the parish the whole mission of the church.. pastoral,
evangelistic, social and ecumenical. 'Any other more particular funttions should be seen as ways of carrying out this
general function.,
Ob ectives and Activities
The PCC is committed to inviting and enabling as many people as possible to worship at our church and become part
of the community of St John's. We aim to truly be 'A Church for Everyone,.
We have noted the Charity Commission's guidance on public benefit and, in particular, the specific guidance on
charities for the advancement of religion. Principally we try to enable ordinary people to live out their faith as part of
our parish community through:
Regular provision of accessible and engaging worship, both in-person and online
Regular opportunitie5 for individual and corporate prayer, study and fellowship.
Pastoral services (baptism, weddings, funerals) and pastoral care for each other and the community.
Mission and Outreach work.
To facilitate this work, we need to maintain the fabric of the church of St John the Evangelist. This is particularly
important with the increasing usage of a beautiful building.

Community Outreach: Community outreach continues to be a vital part of St John's. Our projects have grown
significantly during the year due to the outstanding leadership of Chris and Liz Tragheim and supported by team of
dedicated volunteers.
The main areas of focus have been".
Place of Welcome a weekly community hub, has become a vital meeting point for many local residents. Through the
provision of light refreshments in a very friendly atmosphere it seeks to provide comfort, company, and friendship to
anyone that comes through the doors. We have regular drop in sessions with local group5 such as Bexley Age UK,
who ran a session on MOTfitness for over 50's providing a basic fitness assessment, National Energy Action who told
us about the importance of keeping warm and how to do it, Advisory sessions with the Alzheimerfs Society, a visit
from Santa, An Elf Day morning to raise funds for the Alzheimerfs Society. Place of Welcome is proud to be a delivery
partner for Acts 435 which raises money for clients of Bexley Women's Aid for household items such as washing
machines. Place of Welcome continues to be an outstanding success and regularly receives feedback on how it is
transforming the lives of attendees.
Sin
in
for the Brain who were honoured to open the main local Alzheimer's Society Elf Day event at Sidcup Rugby
Club by singing three Christmas songs. Members of the group were invited to attend the funeral of one of the
members and heard how important the group had been to her since its inception.
Ukraine Humanitarian Su
ort continues to send deliveries to Ukraine, organized by Tania Zabolotska, to include
items donated by local churches and businesses. Santa visited the toy Se￿iCe in early December and collected gifts
of toys which were sent to an orphanage in Ukraine. The En

Is now being supported by a native
Ukrainian, who is qualified in teaching English as an additional language. The Ukraine group were delighted to sing
the Ukrainian National Anthem at the Civic Carol Service. A new book of remembrance for Ukraine is now installed
in the Memorial Chapel.
Christmas donations: Items were collected to be distributed by Bexley Women's Aid to needy families along with
Turkey crowns and Toys collected by the Works.
Sidcu
Frin
e Volunteers ran a stall at the Sidcup Fringe advertising our Christmas Services and Community activities.
The Community Larder continues to be a much-used resource. We were fortunate to receive a large lottery grant at
the beginning of the year which funded the larder for most of the year and was topped up with donations from local
supermarkets and groups such as Sidcup Partners, The Alma Pub and the Sarto lounge who give all monies raised
from their weekly quiz to the larder. The Sidcup Santa run also raised funds for our larder. Harenc Trust funded the
purchase of a freezer, which enables US to boost the food provision by accepting close to date foods from Marks and
Spencer's and storing it safely.
Several Communit Lunches were run during the year, funded by the lottery grant and were very popular by all who
attended.
We were twice selected by Bexley council to distribute the Government backed Household Fund this year. All funds
were distributed to Bexley residents who met the criteria of the grant.

leading it continue to provide a valued church and community service. Busy Bees benefitted from the Lottery grant
and were able to purchase new toys and equipment to enhance their offering.
Links With local schools are an important part of our ministry to children and in particular we have hosted services in
church for Birkbeck, Merton Court, Benedict House and West Lodge. We have also welcomed small groups from off
these schools and from Orchard and from Monkey Puzzle Nursery into church and our vicar is acttve in taking
assemblies too.
Online/Media.' Our Facebook page continues to be our m05t active presence online- it is updated at least weekly
with services, livestreams, news and photos. The reach continues to grow, and we now have over 750 followers- up
from 680 in 2023. The St John's WhatsA
group remains active on a daily basis, sharing prayers, news,
encouragement and photos. Our website is regularly updated, and the PCC have agreed to work with a new website
provider to renew the website in 2025.
Inclusive Church.. We are proudly an inclusive Church and continue as a member of the organization of that name.
This reflects our belief that the love of Christ Is for everyone, regardless of sex, race, economic status, gender,
sexuality, ethnic background, disability, health etc and everyone is welcome at all levels in our church. 'In Christ there
is no longer Jew nor Greek, slave or free, male or female, you are all one in Christ Jesus, needs footnote.
We ensure several services each year dedicated to aspects of inclusion Highlights in 2024 were the disability service
with Rev'd Rachel Wilson and the 'Seat at the Table, service with Bishop Simon.
Vocations and Training: We continue with a very strong ministry team at St John's, which includes 7 people,
licensed or commissioned by the diocese for aspects of ministry work. We were delighted to see our Curate- Rev'd
Eucharia Asiegbu- complete her curate training and move to her own church in Bromley and look forward to
welcoming our new Curate, Stephanie Howarth Maurel in the summer of 2025. Mark Stephen successfully
completed the Hearing and Speaking God's word courses and is now licensed to preach up to 6 times a year.
Church Hall: The refurbishment of the Church Hall was completed during 2024 with a section being made secure to
store the community larder food and freezer. The PCC took the decision to appoint a hall manager to run the hall,
and Tania Zabolotska has been appointed on a 6-month trial ba515 from January 2025.
Prayer and Study: The Benefice Pra
er Grou
has been taken over by Margaret Miller on our Curate's departure and
now meets monthly at St John's, with a breakfast followed by guest speaker and prayer session and proves to be
very popular. Sandra Marshall runs a monthly prayergroup and Laury holds a Pilgrim group, both of which are well
attended. We ran three Quiet Days with Rev'd Jean Boulton-Reynolds which were well-attended ar)d well-received.
Eco-Church- We continue to increase our use of fairtrade/recycled supplies in the kitchen and toilets. The garden of
remembrance is planted with bee-friendly flowers and our flower meadow continues to thrive. Following an energy
assessment survey we have been fortunate to receive a government grant to install LED lighting in the church and
modern energy efficient boilers, both of which will happen in early 2025.
Music: Dr Herman Jordaan continues to improve the quality of music in church, particularly by recruiting several new
members to the robed choir. Joyful voices have continued to grow and have taken part regularly in services and at
community events. Since Rev'd Eucharia has left, they are under new leadership of Shirley Williams and Marcia
Philbin and provide a Iternative singing to more informal services.

in excellent condition. They have delighted in ringing several quarter peals to celebrate events such as birthdays or
special occasions for members of the congregation and support with bell ringing at weddings and funerals. The
Tower tours continue to be popular.

The Freehold Buildings consist of the parish hall. We are advised by the Rochester Diocesan Board of Finance
that, in the event of a disposal, such part of the proceeds as represents the sale of the land on which the
parish hall stands would revert to the Diocese and the parish would be entitled to the value of the hall
premises only. Although it was not considered necessary to obtain a detailed valuation of the premises, an
informal opinion by Right Move, in early 2014, suggested a sale value of between £125,000 and £150,000
and the deemed value of the parish hall was reduced to £125,000 in the 2013 financial statements with the
estimated value of the land being written-off as an impairment in equal instalments over 50 years. The
estimated market value at the year-end remains at c£125,000.
