## Church Secretary’s Report Firstly, I would like to thank all those people who have sent me reports which forms most of this report. ## Leadership / Worship group – Mavis Fletcher You will remember that we surveyed the congregation’s thoughts on how we could better meet our needs in worship. The two areas for development were a wish for more Bible study and for there to be a quiet contemplative service from time to time. The 4pm service quiet services on the 2[nd] Sunday of the month have continued led by Ken and Janet Wales, Allison Jarvis and Mavis Fletcher in turn. They have been well received but latterly very few people have attended. Future services will be led by visiting preachers. We shall continue the monthly 4pm service if people support it having requested it. Bible study home groups are continuing and now need to grow and welcome new members Currently there are groups on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday evenings and the Wednesday morning service at 10.30 also acts like a home group led by Ken Wales, Allison Jarvis and Mavis Fletcher with the support of a minister once a month to lead Holy Communion. More people to encourage this outreach would be very welcome. This small team also planned a labyrinth with articles and prayers for Holy Week. The labyrinth was available whenever the church was open. Our church was supported by Rev Paul who led a beautiful service of Communion and Tenebrae on Maundy Thursday which was greatly appreciated. Good Friday morning saw a good number at Messy Church thanks to Delma and her team. (As a number of children are moving up to High school we may have to look at different timing for Messy Church. The next date for Messy Church has been changed from June 16[th] to June 23[rd] .) The short service of prayers and readings following Messy Church on Good Friday was enjoyed but very few people attended. It was prepared by Mavis. Palm Sunday and the visit of the donkeys was hugely successful! The Local Arrangement service gave focus to Christian Aid week. It was led very effectively by Delma Whitman, Allison Jarvis and Christine Oldham to whom we give our thanks. On July 12[th] Andrew Bennett will be leading our service giving us a prayerful, Christian focus to our giving and the challenges we face as a community wishing to continue thriving in Fulwood. It will be a parade service too. Harvest is planned for September 27[th] Also parade service. 3Gen will be the weekend of Oct 4[th] The Revd Peter Sheasby has accepted an invitation to come and preach on Nov 1[st] . Olivia Parkinson is now leading the Communion stewards as Jackie Clarke has stepped down. Our grateful thanks to Jackie for all she has done and to Olivia for stepping up. Eugenia Ofori has joined the communion stewards. The choir is depleted in numbers and would really welcome new singers. They rehearse on Sunday mornings from 9.30. The choir is valued for their leading of the hymns and for special choir items from time to time. Just like other members of the congregation not everyone can come every week so it does limit what we can do. A few more singers would be really helpful. ## Sunday Club – Janet Wales Numbers in Sunday Club continue to be buoyant and there are currently 45 children on the register with 7 leaders; a slight decrease from last year. The weekly attendance, in line with adult church attendance generally, is much lower however, averaging between 12 – 18. We divide the children into 4 groups – Seekers (Pre-school), Explorers (Key Stage 1), Pathfinders (key Stage 2) and PathfindersPlus – who attend high school and all follow our curriculum at an appropriate level. This year we have not been able to recruit enough leaders after the departure of Darren and Cheryl Arnold and we have therefore had to re-organise our pre-school provision which now combines creche and nursery age children. Gill McGill works hard to meet the needs of this group with the help of their parents. Parents are also on a rota to support Pathfinders so we can meet the safeguarding requirement to have 2 unrelated adults as leaders for each group. Our themes from September 25, have been: ‘Heroines and Heroes of the Old Testament’, ‘The Christmas Story, our Bible, and currently The Early Church (called ‘Journeys’ in Explorers or ‘Passing the message on’ in Pathfinders). PathfindersPlus usually follow the lectionary. As outlined in previous reports, all the sessions are activity based which include games, crafts, drama, baking, discussion etc as well as listening / reading stories and thinking about how we worship and relate to God. Our Advent Celebration in December went well and again, over 100 people attended the session. It was a delight as always to see so many people of different ages exploring the Christmas story together in a variety of ways. We decided to move with the times and use AI technology to produce some of the scripts and this was highly successful. Our thanks to all the people who contributed to the success of the event. Each term has included a Sunday session of Forest Church which is co-ordinated by Sonia Phillips. These highly popular Sundays enable children, young people and their families to explore Highgate Woods, follow activities and participate in worship outside. Refreshments are of course an essential part of these sessions! One session of Forest Church which was particularly special, involved the participation of 2 donkeys and their owners; we were really able to act out the events of the first Palm Sunday and the story became memorable for all who took part. These informal sessions are also opportunities for people who do not normally attend services to get to know us and make relationships. Thanks to all who help to organise these events especially Sonia. Reference also needs to be made to our links with circuit (Unleashed) and Connexion (3Generate) activities. We feel it is important for young people to see themselves as part of a wider organisation and encourage them to participate as much as possible. Our focus for development during this year is to improve the publicity and outreach to new families especially those of pre-school age and to develop our leadership structures so that those on the parents’ rota can feel part of the team. All our staff are up to date with their safeguarding training and we continue to ensure that we meet all the guidelines for good practice. Our overall aim continues to enable children and young people to grow in faith and the knowledge that they are loved by God, they are lovable and they can love and care for others, following the example of Jesus, our saviour. Sunday Club is a vital part of the whole church and, as always, we rely on your prayers and support. ## Pastoral Care – Sue Penrith Pastoral care is very important to all people who are part of this community. During the last few months, the Church Family have tried in many ways to support the needs of our families and those who visit us from the Community. We continue to look at different ways of supporting the needs of all, remembering confidentiality and sensitivity to what is happening in homes and communities. Over the last months we have had several people in hospital, they have been supported in hospital by Church family members and Carolynn Hothersall and Liz Ellison. The last few months we have had many families’ facing bereavement and now we support them on their bereavement journey. These people have contributed to the life of Fulwood Methodist for many years. The minibus is very much part of our Pastoral care. All of us can continue to contribute to Pastoral care by listening, helping where you can, sending cards, making phone calls, sending texts and being friendly and telling the Ministry team of concerns. Flowers are sent out weekly to support people who have happy events and to those who are having a difficult time. – Welcome Wednesday Edna Armstrong This report is very similar to the report to Church council last year. Welcoming people through our doors. Many friendships renewed and new ones made each week A few people really need our support so we are always on the lookout for anyone in that category. The ongoing need for volunteers, especially cooks and helpers never ends. Having lost one or two to age, illness. We are lucky to have the support of people from outside our community who are now volunteering on our weekly rota. As I reported over the years and feel very strongly about Welcome Wednesday ethos is about caring and sharing, opening our doors to everyone. This takes commitment, if we are to show our love in a practical way. The menu has stayed very much the same with Brunch, Coffee, Scones, Bacon and Sausage Butties, Soup and Crumble. The price of food has increased a little to reflect the general cost of food in the market place. Martin and Sue Burt keep a diligent eye on buying and stocking up, Martin could tell you exactly how many sausage, packs of bacon and eggs we have used over the year. Not to mention Margaret, Delma and Maggie who bake tasty cheese and fruit each week. Welcome Wednesday could not operate without them. Our New 2 You still provides a wonderful facility, opening on Tuesday mornings and when Farmers market is on as well. This income needed for covering our costs, church projects and outreach further afield. The total for this year is made up of £651.00 Tuesdays, £235.00 Cash for Clothes, £504.00 Farmers Market and New 2 U £5220.00 giving a grand total of £6648.00 give or take a few pence. Eva McLaren manages this part terrifically, ensuring she have the necessary volunteers to cope each week. It is not an easy task and generally very hard work sorting our donations and providing a well stocked shop. Unsold items or items not fit for selling, have to be disposed of either sold on to Cash for Clothes, items passed on to other charity shops, and of course quite a number of items need to be deposited at the recycling centre. All this goes unnoticed by the vast majority of our congregation, so an enormous thank you to Eva. To all our helpers, volunteers in which ever role you play a big thank you. Sue Penrith always first on duty making sure we are ready for opening. Dot Bunting and Liz Ellison who are there very week. To our rota volunteers again another big thank you we couldn’t manage without you. As always please spread the news and consider volunteering to help manage keep Welcome Wednesday going . Your time would be much appreciated and a rewarding activity to do. ## Brownies – Diane Bird In the Autumn 2025 term we completed our Christmas Boxes challenge (24 boxes) and held a Tombola at the Christmas Fair, as we do every year. The girls completed some First Aid activities, went on a torchlight tour, a Halloween Night, a St. Andrew’s night, did lots of crafts and had a sports evening. The girls went to see Zootopia 2 at the cinema and we finished with a Christmas Disco with the Rainbows. Spring Term started with 6 new starters, some work on the Camp badge and completion of the Kindness badge. We did aerobics, designing and building monuments, lots of games and some crafts. We exchanged Thinking Day cards and gifts with a pack from South East England and ended the term with a Circus Skills Sleepover. The Summer Term has been hectic so far. We have played lots of games and done a variety of crafts. The husband of one of our leaders came to assist with the Mechanics badge – as well as finding out how to maintain a bicycle the girls made chocolate bikes and did a cycle track race, which also allowed them to explore emotions. We went to Knowsley Safari park in May and the girls enjoyed themselves, particularly at the Sealion display. We are going to see Toy Story 5 in July and have several other trips lined up. We have had 28 girls throughout the year, so we are absolutely full. As 1 girl leaves, another seems to want to join. We have had a number of enrolments and 4 Gold Awards were gained during the year. Our 6 leaders have been brilliant as always, two of them will have completed their leadership qualifications by the end of term, and our Young Leader is due to start hers in September. We are grateful for all their hard work and we appreciate the support given to us by the church family. ## Rainbows – Jayne Myat As of this term we have 13 Rainbows so our numbers remain steady. Our policy is to have no more than 15 girls in our unit so that we can give each girl individual attention, especially now some of our girls start when they are 4. I am very happy that we have some girls from families who have connections with church and whose mums I remember as Rainbows themselves. Our adult leadership team of 3 remains unchanged. We also have 2 young leaders and possibly another one starting with us in September. We maintain strong links with the Brownie packs. We often take part in events organised by Girlguiding together such as cinema visits and trips out to Knowsley Safari Park. It is good to see that a number of girls who were our ## Rainbows are now Guides. Over the past 12 months our Rainbows have earned a variety of badges. They have taken part in a variety of activities including growing sunflowers, scavenger hunt and games in Highgate woods and hosting an event for families where Rainbows served decorated biscuits and fruit kebabs they had prepared to their families. ## Scouts – Dave Ryan The 4th Fulwood Scout Group has had another successful year, providing a wide range of activities for 66 young people supported by a dedicated team of 23 volunteers. Despite a quieter year for camps, all sections delivered an engaging programme including visits, outdoor activities, skills development, and creative projects. Highlights included a Beaver space camp, Cubs achieving second place in a district competition, and a varied programme helping young people grow in confidence, teamwork, and practical life skills. The group remains financially stable, with a closing balance of £7,105.24, following investment in equipment and activities. An annual £700 contribution is made to Fulwood Methodist Church in appreciation of the use of its facilities and ongoing support. The Scout Group greatly values its strong partnership with the church, which provides a welcoming base for its work with young people. Leadership continues to be strong, with thanks expressed to all volunteers and a new Trustee Chair taking over this year. Scouting continues to play an important role within the life of the church and wider community. Through developing confidence, resilience, teamwork, and respect for others, the group helps young people to grow into responsible and caring individuals. The partnership between the church and the Scout Group reflects a shared commitment to nurturing young people, serving the community, and encouraging values of service, inclusion, and belonging. Looking ahead, the group aims to expand outdoor opportunities, increase camping activity, and welcome new members from a growing waiting list, continuing to offer a safe, inclusive, and enjoyable Scouting experience. ## Friends at Fulwood – Edna Armstrong They meet on alternative Tuesday 2pm for about 1.30 hours. This year has again seen a wide variety of visitors and activities to our meetings. As the register shows we lost 3 of our members and had 3 new members The autumn session carried on as arranged, ending with our Christmas meal at the Ancient Oak. However this present programme was somewhat disrupted with non-speakers. Carol and Henry Rose covered for Jane Wild, which was a musical afternoon. Poet Bridget Breen was a delight taking us through her journey of becoming a poet. Anne Wynn of Lets Grow Preston was enjoyed by all and a very thought-provoking afternoon with Karen Livesey on Modern Day Slavery was one our highlights. Malcolm Rae arranged for his friend Jo Harwood to come at short notice when she shared her life of football with PNE. She and Malcolm had us playing games. We have tried to encourage new members and impress it’s not necessary to commit to coming very meeting. I don’t think the name change has made any difference to the attendance as people still think of us as a Ladies Group or a fellowship group ## AM Club - Dave Topping This has been a difficult time for the AM Club with the loss of Ken, Barry and Eric as well as the difficulties for our less mobile members in getting to Church. We are an ageing group with a lack of interest from the younger retirees in the Church family. Added to this some speakers now command fees of up to £50 which is non-viable with our falling numbers. Currently on our Summer break we will need to decide on our return as to the future (or nonfuture of the AM club). ## – Community Choir Dave Topping This has been a successful period for the Community Choir with 4 new singers taking our total to 24 and a weekly Wednesday turn out of 17. Special thanks to our wonderful pianist Teresa who, despite belonging to a different church , also pays her subscription. We have over 10 years given all our subs to Church funds even though several of our members are not part of our church family. Extra to our Wednesday singing we also did a day out to Manchester to see Miss Saigon and sang at the RPH chapel for their Christmas lights switch on. ## Book Club – Ken Wales The Book Club continues to meet on a monthly basis (second Tuesday of the month at 7pm). Currently, our cycle of meetings has been interrupted but we hope to resume the pattern from August. Average attendance is the range 9 - 10 but we are pleased to keep in touch with at least two other people through the WhatsApp group - indeed they are enthusiastic followers of our reading programme. For 25/26 jointly we designed an annual programme of 12 meetings based mainly on thematic evenings. So only on a limited number of occasions this year have we all read and discussed the same book. Currently we are designing the 26/27 programme in the same cooperative fashion: the balance may change once more back to a more traditional arrangement. Details will be available shortly. Whatever, it is always a delight when we learn from each other of books old and new and share insights from them which enrich our lives. In recent years our Christmas meeting has taken the form of a Secret Santa of book and an irreverent (and irrelevant) Christmas Quiz. The quality of the biscuits usually improves in December too. We usually try to include a session each year where we look in detail at the Methodist Church Bible Book of the Year and this year, we hope in August to look at the Epistle to the Philippians with an emphasis upon its literary structure and features. Several members of The Book Club enthusiastically support the wider Church's attempt to ensure that Ribbleton Avenue Methodist Junior School has a steady flow of suitable children's books for use by the pupils. We guess that as a result well over 300 books have now found their way onto school book shelves and even started to create libraries in pupil's homes, many of which do not have a wide selection to encourage children to read. Gifts of books in good condition are always welcomed and can be passed on via Ken Wales or Eva McClaren. Knitng Club – Jan Astley and Veronica Frost Knitting club continues to thrive and we can have anywhere between 6 and 26 people attending. A lot of our group are not church attendees but love the environment and safety that our church premises offer. We feel special and blessed. As always we have projects on the go that range from toppers for the Garstang Road post box to blankets for underprivileged in the Morecambe area to baby blankets and cardigans to other small fund raising ideas. Our stall is always full and helping to make money for the church. When asked by the finance committee we always help out with donations to church projects and general bills. We also support a group of Afghan refugee ladies with gifts of wool, needles, fabric and threads. They are always on the lookout for sewing machines as well and our friends at Tools for Independence often help us source those as do church friends and members. We ran a successful afternoon tea party between Christmas and New Year. It was aimed mainly at older people who might be on their own and some funding for that came from the Warm Spaces initiative and the rest from knitting club funds. We had a really good raffle that was a good money spinner. We are a very happy group, if you are ever passing church between 2 and 4 on a Thursday afternoon please call in!! ## – Safeguarding Catherine Vesty A number of church members attended a refresher safeguarding course in April and I will be inviting the remainder of volunteers due a refresher to the next course once dates are available. The District safeguarding officer has requested that risk assessments are carried out for a number of church activities including: Coach Trips Messy Church/Lego Church Toddler Groups Vulnerable Adult Groups Youth Groups I have been sent templates for these but I will also be approaching the group once I have had a chance to review them. Catherine is resigning from her safeguarding role and is therefore looking for someone to replace her from September onwards. ## Property – Mike Ellis The Property Group continues to meet regularly to ensure our buildings are managed and maintained to ensure we have a safe environment for our numerous building users. Our main items of expenditure since the last Church Council have been the work on the roofs which required scaffold access and the clearing of the gutters. The new dehumidifier is working well removing 30 litres of water EVERY DAY! The programme of decoration work continues to be implemented with a number of volunteers who have offered their time to help with these activities. The building continues to be well used mainly with regular bookings. The bookings are managed by Angela Dunnett. We have almost completed the updating of the Fire Risk Assessment documents. We are proposing to carry out a fire drill later this year on a Sunday morning. The Group is still in contact with the Local Council and a Preston Charity in relation to working in partnership regarding the maintenance and use of the garden area at the crossroads. We are planning to conduct a leaflet drop to our neighbours to gauge the level of local support. The Gas contract, for 2 years starting on June 23[rd] 2026, has been let with EDF (we have been with EON Next). The EDF quote was 11% BELOW what we have been paying. We have just started negotiations for the Electricity Contract which starts on 1[st] September 2026. Sharon Beck is leading on this with support from Angela & Mike. The heating was turned off on May 1[st] but there have been a couple of occasions when it was turned back on again! The Property Group currently has 8 members. We are not getting any younger! We no longer have members with practical skills who are able and willing to be on the premises 2/3 mornings a week, every week. We intend to create a list of ‘jobs to be done’ from which we will ask individuals to action them. That will mean that defects (e.g. dripping taps, light out) will take longer to rectify. Defects should continue to be reported to a member of the property group. We have set up a Working Group to set this up and identify competent individuals. Finance – This is to be covered in a separate agenda Item Finally, as you are all aware Rev Jane left the ministry suddenly in January and I am aware that many of you were left shocked, confused and bereaved but that you have been very supportive to each other during this difficult time. I would therefore like to thank all the people who are involved in trying to keep the church services and other activities going and hopefully we will have a new Minister in September 2027.
