# Fulwood Methodist Church Annual Church Meeting Sunday 10 September 2023

## August 2023

Dear Friends

I am writing to invite all members of Fulwood Methodist Church to attend a short meeting of the General Church Meeting (GCM) after the morning service on **Sunday 10[th] September.** At this meeting we will bring the names of the new Stewards/Leadership Team for your approval of appointment. There will also be appointments of members to the Church Council and representatives to the Circuit Meeting. Once these appointments have been confirmed the new Leadership Team can begin the work of its wider remit which has been agreed by the Church Council in resolutions passed at their meeting in June. (If you want to know more please ask).

Attached to this letter is a brief personal statement and photo of those members who have agreed to have their names put forward for appointment to the Leadership Team.

It has not been possible to collate a full report of activities throughout the church for this meeting so I will try and give you a quick resumé of what has been happening throughout the church family over the past 16 months.

We hope that as we all settle into our new roles a comprehensive activities report will be available for the GCM in Spring 2024.

Over the past year most of our pre-Covid church activities have resumed and indeed are beginning to flourish with bigger attendances than in 2021-22. I hope it serves to remind us all just how much goes on at our church besides Sunday morning worship.

## **Youth, Children and Family work**

**Sunday Club** is thriving and numbers seem to grow each week! Thanks to all the leaders who are constantly providing new challenges for the youngsters to explore the bible and understand more about our Christian faith.

**The Sunday Group (formerly known as OMG)** is being relaunched with a view to meeting for breakfast with perhaps a time for parents to meet for bible study and discussion.

A group of young people from Fulwood will join a wider group from the Circuit to go to **3Generate** in the autumn. This is a national event for all children and young people within Methodism to meet and enjoy music, drama, activities and time to talk of God over a weekend together.

**Messy Church** is an opportunity for families to meet together for craft activities, food and a bible message. If you’ve never been, now is the time to try it!

**Toddlers Club** has increased its numbers again and each Friday morning the Church Hall buzzes with the young children enjoying playing with the large toys whilst their parents and carers enjoy a cuppa and chat. I believe their toasted fruit loaf is in great demand!

The **Escape Club** for the 7-11year olds has also grown, the main limitation being the number of staff who are willing to help supervise the activities. It is hoped that after the summer holidays the older group will be able to restart but we do need some extra adult

2

help if this is to succeed. Please speak to Darren if you or someone in your family would like to help. We are one of the few churches in Preston where youngsters are able to meet in this way and there is a real need to provide this kind of activity for our community. All the **uniformed organisations** supporting our young people have been busy encouraging them to learn new skills and enjoying plenty of outdoor activities. Rainbows, Brownies and Guides have been meeting regularly with lots of exciting activities for girls of all ages. The **Brownies** have now got a few vacancies as older girls progress to the guide group. However, as always there is a need for more helpers. Several leaders have now left to go to university this summer so, to allow them to cater for the same number of girls, there will need to be more helpers.

The **4[th] Fulwood Scout Group** celebrates it’s 80[th] birthday this year and on 10[th] October there will be a special parade service to commemorate this anniversary. The newest part of the Scout Group is the **Squirrel Drey** which began in July, providing activities for 4- 6year olds. Twelve boys and girls were enrolled in Junly and have enjoyed a range of activities already including a family day at Waddecar Scout Camp where they tried out all sorts of new adventures.

## **Church Life and Outreach**

**Sunday Worship** each week is now regularly transmitted over Zoom to those who are unable to attend church for whatever reason, but most of our congregation have returned to face-to-face worship. There have been a wide variety of services offered both on Sunday morning and during the week. A regular **Communion service** is held on most Wednesday mornings and **Alternative Church** has been meeting every 6 weeks or so at the Black Bull pub where attendees enjoy a meal together and discuss matters of faith. We recently held a **Café All Together service** on Sunday morning and **Breakfast Church** meets several times a year. Because of the shortage of preachers we regularly have a ‘Local Arrangement” which involves members of the church working together to present the morning worship. We have lots more people now offering to take part in worship by reading, drama, music and prayers and this is well received by the congregation. We enjoy a variety of **music** via the organ, clavinova, choir, worship band and ad hoc contributions by other musicians. There is a wealth of talent out there so if you would like to be part of the music in the church in any way I’m sure Mavis Fletcher or the band group would love to hear from you.

We have seen many new families coming to our church and we welcome the diversity and enthusiasm they bring to our Church Family. If you see someone you don’t know please speak to them and you will be surprised how wonderful it is to get to know new people! It is also lovely to see our regular visitors from the L’Arche community who also meet on a Thursday morning again for their Soup and Craft time.

Our regular weekday activities are welcoming many new visitors for **Tuesday morning coffee, and on Welcome Wednesday** friends are enjoying their bacon and sausage snacks as well as soup, brunches and home-made fruit crumbles and scones! The New to You Stall is open both mornings and many beautiful bargains are to be found. Thanks to all our regular team of helpers and cooks without whom we could not provide this community service. Throughout the winter months our church was one of the designated Warm Spaces by Lancashire County Council who provided a small grant so that we could help those in most need.

Regular church groups meet throughout the week, particularly in the winter months. These include the AM Club (men’s group), Tuesday at Two (ladies group), Farmers’

3

Markets (bi-monthly), Book Club (monthly), Bible study groups, Community Choir (weekly) and the Knitting Group (weekly). This list is not exhaustive!! Please see the weekly notices either online, via email or hard copy from church each Sunday for up-todate information. We hope there is something for everyone.

## **Property and Finance**

Without these two important groups our church would not be able to function. We have a wonderful regular team of ladies and gentlemen who, along with our paid Cleaner, keep a close eye on all aspects of the structure, decoration and general maintenance of the building as well as cleaning throughout each week. Thanks to this dedicated group. The Church Finance Group meet regularly to make sure that we are making proper use of all our income and keeping a careful watch on our outgoings. They do long term planning so that major items can be funded as needed and the church is maintained and supported in the best way. A church the size of ours costs a lot of money to maintain, but we also have to support our ministers and lay workers financially within the Circuit. As a registered charity with the Charity Commission, all our finances must be clearly accounted and regularly audited. We are very fortunate to have some very skilled and experienced people working in this team and thank them for their hard work throughout the year to keep us solvent but also to support others in time of need.

I hope this letter provides a snapshot of all that we do in the name of Christ in our community and beyond. A big thank you to all who help us provide a major presence of the Church in action in our community. If you would like to become more involved and support any of our activities, please do not hesitate to speak up! If you think there are activities we should be doing but not providing at present, please let us know and we will see where we can be ever more active and engaging.

Thank you to everyone for being part of Fulwood Methodist Church and its mission amongst God’s people everywhere.

Margaret Squire Church Council Secretary
