The PCC Report

This report covers the period ending December 2023 during which six meetings were held.

PCC members : Canon Tony Kaunhoven, Chair, Pat Bryant, Lay Reader, Dot Bushen, Church Warden, Angela Bird, Ben Roper, Tony Evans, Health and Safety Officer, Vivien Stephenson, Rosie Glass, Parish Safeguarding Officer, Alison Davidson, Sue Marsh PCC Secretary and Church Warden.

In addition: Officers-non PCC members Joyce Glencross Treasurer Rick and Kath Naylor Deputy Treasurers Kath Naylor Electoral Roll Officer Rick Naylor Heating Officer

The role of the PCC is to promote the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to the practices of the Church of England and to support and co-operate with the incumbent in promoting in the parish the whole mission of the Church, pastoral, evangelistic, social and ecumenical.

Worship

The PCC oversees the worshipping life of All Saints and St Anne’s. Sadly, the effects of the Pandemic are still being felt as some church members have not returned and some of those who have remain anxious about receiving from the chalice. Canon Tony continues his livestreamed Sunday morning reflections and an informal prayer meeting welcomes all at 9am on Fridays. St Anne’s have two services a month, a Eucharist on the second Sunday and a congregation led service on the fourth Sunday. We are grateful for Roger Truscott and Zena Hawley‘s care of St Anne’s.

All Saints has had a congregation led service on the second Sunday for almost two years. This is led by a lay Worship Team co-ordinated by our Lay Reader, Pat Bryant. It is well received.

We were delighted to hold our ever popular Christmas Tree Festival which offered the opportunity to welcome visitors, some of whom travel long distances each year to see the spectacle. This is a busy but enjoyable time with Carol services for the primary schools, St Anselm’s and Lady Manners; the popular Christingle and the all age Crib Service both fill the church! Ash Wednesday marks Lent and Stations of the Cross invites us to travel the journey to the Cross with Christ each week. We also receive a daily ‘Thought for the Day’ from Canon Tony. This provides, as the name suggests, a time to quietly read, pray and reflect. Holy Week is special at All Saints with a service each day culminating in the Easter Vigil, the first Eucharist of Easter at 6am on Easter Day followed by breakfast, the Easter Eucharist with Easter Egg Hunt and finally Evensong.

A special service was held to mark the Coronation of HM King Charles iii followed by a well - attended Hog Roast for the neighbours of the church. The annual Service for the Departed is always a moving occasion, much appreciated, especially by the recently bereaved.

Mission and Outreach

Canon Tony continues to lead weekly Collective Worship at Bakewell infant School, Rowsley and Stanton Primary Schools as well as monthly assemblies at St Anselm’s and termly at Lady Manners. Services for the major festivals are held at church for the Infant School, a Harvest service for St Anselm’s and Commemoration Service for Lady Manners. Canon Tony has been a huge support for the Infant School during what has been a difficult year for them. The Cross was again erected in Bath Gardens for the duration of Lent, and the Town Remembrance was well attended in church as was the Remembrance Commemoration at the War Memorial at Over Haddon.

The Lunchtime Talks proved as popular as ever and they and the Coffee Concerts brought many non - church members into church.

Once again we were part of the BCT Carnival float, which Mark Ramsden prepared. Canon Tony as usual took part in the annual Raft Race – sadly his raft sank. Mark also saw to the erection of the Town Crib which is always enjoyed by many visitors. The tableau has been adopted.

On 16[th] July Canon Tony was President of the Bakewell Country Festival on the Showground – a lovely occasion.

Each PCC has been asked to produce a Mission Action Plan. To set this in motion we had a morning with the PCCs of the other Benefice churches at Ashford. This was a good morning, happily we felt comfortable together and willing to participate. We came to an understanding of what Mission is and decided to concentrate on two of the Five Marks of Mission, ‘Tend’ and ‘Treasure’. Sadly much of what

we do to tend, particularly for our older members, though once very successful did not survive the Pandemic. Although the Mothers’ Union as such, no longer exists, its members plus other church members gather socially each month, this has proved very popular. We plan to assess what is available for older people in Bakewell to see if there are any gaps we can fill, or where existing activities would welcome help. We were awarded the Bronze Eco Award, thanks to Angela and Alison for their work in re-starting the wild flower area in the churchyard, started by Julia and George, and for applying for the award. We are now working to gain the silver award. The Churchwarden of Glossop Parish Church (Gold award holders) has offered to advise on the way forward. We were given some trees for the churchyard by DDDC. We met with Chris Payne (tree and landscapes) to discuss which trees we would prefer and where they should go.

Fabric

There was an attempted theft in church in Spring and although nothing was stolen apart from the cover for the cross, which Mary Chaplin replaced, the sacristy lock was damaged and the safe lock broken. The cross was damaged by having bleach thrown over it which was minimised through cleaning by Richard Chaplin. The Insurers agreed to like for like replacement of the sacristy and outdoor keys and the safe. We are grateful to Dot for her perseverance in achieving this satisfactory outcome.

The organ fund benefited from the Lunchtime Talks and the Coffee Concerts as well as The King’s Men, Cantiamo and Fiori Musicale Concerts, all very well received. Again it fell to Dot to organise them, thank you, Dot. Meetings were held with scaffolders, joiners, electricians, organ builders and William McVicar oversaw the whole procedure with Ben always ‘on the spot’. We all look forward to having our organ back!

We agreed to apply for the installation of glass doors to replace those at the south door. Not only would they open up the church to the community but would let visitors know when there is a service in church.

Charitable Giving

We continue to send £1,000 to support Summer Activities for about two hundred children from St Matthew’s Church in Zababdeh. The outstanding £684 was sent to the High Peak Food Bank at Buxton. Canon Tony and Rachel made two more visits to Krakov to support community initiatives working with Refugees there and in Ukraine.

We jointly with the Methodist Church support Christian Aid and last year raised £1498 from a stall at the Methodist coffee morning, church collection, quiz, Lent lunches and Pat’s home made cards.

Finance

The PCC receives updates on our financial state throughout the year from Joyce. She is stepping back from her role of administrator but happily will continue as Treasurer. We are very grateful to her for her hard work in keeping the books straight. The Parish Giving Scheme assures us of a level of income and the card machine is an added way for people to donate to church. We are grateful to Kath and Rick our assistant treasurers for overseeing the PGS and banking the cash. We were identified as being among the six hundred least Eco friendly churches and for that reason were invited to apply for a grant to help us move towards Net Zero. We were unsuccessful this time but will be able to apply again.

Safeguarding

Rosie Glass has taken on the role of Parish Safeguarding Officer and is now qualified to deal with all our in house DBS checks except those of the clergy. She keeps abreast of the changes to policy and our training needs and ensures that we are all up to date with the required training. This is a very important role as it is essential that we and all visitors to church feel safe at all times.

Independent Examiner's Report to the members of Bakewell Parochial Church Council

I report on the financial statements for the year ended 31st December 2023.

Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner

The charity's trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year (under section 144(2) of the Charities Act 2011 (the Act)) and that an independent examination is needed. It is my responsibility to:

examine the financial statements (under section 145 of the 2011 Act),

to follow the procedures laid down in the General Directions given by the Charity Commission (under section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act), and

to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.

Basis of independent examiner's report

My examination was carried out in accordance with General Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the financial statements presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the financial statements, and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the financial statements present a 'true and fair' view and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.

Independent examiner's statement

In the course of my examination, no matter has come to my attention:

  1. which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in, any material respect, the requirements: to keep accounting records in accordance with section 130 of the 2011 Act; and to prepare financial statements which accord with the accounting records and comply with the accounting requirements of the 2011 Act; have not been met; or

  2. to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the financial statements to be reached.
