## **Annual report**

This report covers the period ending December 2022 during which five meetings were held with an average attendance of 78%. The May meeting was cancelled due to the Coronavirus. At some meetings some members were on Zoom.

**PCC members:** Canon Tony Kaunhoven, Chair, Rev’d Brenda Jackson, Dot Bushen, acting Church Warden, Angela Bird, Pat Bryant, Ben Roper, Mark Ramsden. Vivien Stephenson, Tony Evans, Rosie Glass, Alison Davidson co-opted in May.

In addition: Officers – non PCC members:

Joyce Glencross Administrator and Treasurer Rick and Kath Naylor Deputy Treasurers Kath Naylor Electoral Roll Officer Joanna Bunting Parish Safeguarding Officer Rick Naylor Heating Officer Tony Evans Health and Safety Officer also PCC member Sue Marsh PCC Secretary and Church Warden (indisposed)

The Role of the PCC is to promote the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to the practices of the Church of England and to support and co-operate with the incumbent in promoting in the parish the whole mission of the Church, pastoral, evangelistic, social and ecumenical.

## **Worship**

The PCC oversees the worshipping life of All Saints and St Anne’s. Church life post Pandemic returned to much as we knew it pre 2020, although as with churches across the Country, some members of the community have not returned and although the House of Bishops have recommended that the chalice is safe to receive from, many still feel an anxiety. Canon Tony has continued his livestreamed Sunday morning reflections and Rev Brenda still leads Phone Church on Tuesday mornings. During the year informal Friday morning prayer is shared in the Chancel at 9.30 am, to which anybody is welcome.

St Anne’s now has two Services a month on a Sunday at 10 am, a Eucharist on the 2[nd] and a congregation led Morning Prayer on the 4[th] Sunday. The PCC recognise the devoted care for St Anne’s by Roger Truscott and Zena Hawley.

The PCC agreed to a Morning Praise Service at All Saints beginning on the 2[nd] Sunday at 10.30 am with a lay Worship Team co-ordinated by our Lay Reader, Pat Bryant. This has been received well with positive feedback.

The PCC welcomed planning for the ever successful Christmas Tree Festival and the opportunities for outreach and welcoming visitors, including Lady Manners and St Anselm’s Schools for their Carol Services and the Infant and Junior Schools Christingle Service. Christmas, Lent, Holy Week and Easter offer opportunities to welcome many families for the Crib Service, and our clergy help our spiritual nurturing after Ash Wednesday with weekly Stations of the Cross, Lent reflections on Wednesday lunchtimes and Canon Tony’s Thought for the Day.

Holy Week is always a powerful spiritual and emotional journey with a full week of Services culminating with the Easter fire and first Eucharist of Easter at 6 am followed by breakfast. Both churches enjoy the joy of their Parish Eucharistic Services on Easter Day, with a momentous day finishing with Evensong at All Saints.

Town services were held at All Saints for the Queen’s Jubilee and also for a Thanksgiving for the life of HM The Queen. The annual Service for the Departed is always well attended and greatly appreciated by all, particularly the recently bereaved.

In September the PCC received information on the proposal that Sheldon should become a Festival Church. This enables such churches to plan for six services a year, usually on and around major festivals with the encouragement of liaising and planning with the local community.

The PCC welcomed the opportunity to apply for a Marriage Order which enables Bannos of Marriage to be called in churches across our benefice, where a church does not have regular services, and also for a couple living in one part of the benefice to be able to marry in a church in another part of the benefice without the need to qualify for a Connection if they so wish.

## **Mission and Outreach**

The PCC is committed to the opportunities to be a `Church outside the walls.’ School outreach remains very important and Canon Tony leads weekly Collective Worship at Bakewell Infant, Rowsley and Stanton Primary Schools as well as a monthly assembly at St Anselm’s and termly at Lady Manners. Church services were held for all the major seasons for the Infant School, an Ash Wednesday and Harvest Service for St Anselm’s, and a Commemoration Service for Lady Manners.

Covid has impacted upon Bakewell Churches Together events, but the cross was erected in Bath Gardens for the duration of Lent and the Good Friday Passion happened. The Town Remembrance Service returned to All Saints following Covid

and we welcomed the RBL standards being hung in St George’s Chapel for this. Over Haddon welcomed their Remembrance Commemoration at the War Memorial.

Wednesday Lunchtime talks went ahead again as did Saturday Coffee Concerts- both excellent ways of bringing non regular church attenders into church.

The PCC oversaw the installation of WiFi in All Saints church and are now in the process of applying for a grant for the installation of cameras to livestream services, including where requested, weddings and funerals.

Canon Tony and Rev Brenda started a Warm Space in the Newark on Tuesday afternoons to meet the rising costs of consumer bills for people and will assess whether this is needed, given the hill many have to climb to church.

Unfortunately the Lunch Club suffered as a result of the Pandemic with a reduction in numbers attending and the difficulty of attracting new volunteers. Unfortunately, along with Tots and Teds and Breakfast Church, the Lunch Club ceased to meet. The PCC are extremely thankful for the leadership and teams of all who have made these three things such an important outreach.

The PCC welcomed the opportunity for All Saints members to share in the Town BCT Carnival Float- always great fun! Mark Ramsden oversaw the refurbishment of the Town Crib and once again erected and took down the Christmas Tableau. Our thanks to him for both.

Each PCC has been asked to produce a Mission Action Plan by Bishop Libby and Benefice PCC members joined together for a morning with The Revd Jason Kennedy to start our thinking.

## **Fabric**

The PCC have responsibility for the good order of both of our church buildings and their ornaments. The refurbishment of the All Saints Organ has taken necessary time during the year. A faculty has been granted for the work and money towards the £150k needed is being raised. William McVicar, a leading Advisor is overseeing the whole process and we are in the process of agreeing a contract with an Organ Building and Repair Company looking to making a start in 2023 or early 2024.

The replacement electronic organ also needed repairing and this was done in May. The PCC decided that due to the main organ becoming unreliable we would not use it for services.

The Cathedral repair to the red altar frontal which had also been held up by the pandemic was finally completed and we welcomed it back at All Saints in November. Grateful thanks to John Boyle who has very kindly and generously done all the transporting of the three repaired frontals.

We had one Fabric meeting at St Anne’s which resulted in a recommendation that the gutters needed clearing and the flashing round the chimney needed attention. Some saplings were too close to the building and should be removed. The PCC have followed St Anne’s thoughts on re-ordering the church to make it a Visitor/Pilgrimage Centre.

## **Charitable Giving**

We continue to send £1000 to support the education of two children from St Matthew’s Church in Zababdeh. The outstanding £684 was divided equally between The Bishop’s Harvest Appeal, ValleyCids, a Christian charity working with young people who receive funds from the Lighthouse Charity Shop in Bakewell and other Derbyshire towns, and support for the giving of Humanitarian Aid for community initiatives working with Refugees in Krakow and Ukraine. Canon Tony and Rachel made three visits to Krakow in 2022.

We jointly with the Methodist Church support Christian Aid and the Gift Day held in Christian Aid week was very successful and together with a stall at the Methodist Coffee morning later in the year raised almost £1700 which includes £96 from Pat’s homemade cards.

## **Finance**

The PCC received financial updates through the course of the year from our treasurer, Joyce Glencross and welcomed feedback that membership of The Parish Giving Scheme assured a level of income from personal giving even when there were fewer services because of Covid. The PCC are thankful to Rick Naylor for overseeing the PGS and for banking cash. The increased use of a Giving terminal in church is welcomed, as is the use of Gift Aided giving.

## **Safeguarding**

Joanna Bunting is our Parish Safeguarding Officer, and as such is responsible for seeing that the PCC and church officers, and those with face to face contact with the public are up to date with their safeguarding training. The training has been updated so many of us need to re-train. It is essential that everybody who enters our church feels completely at ease and for there to be a complete commitment to keeping everybody safe.

## Parish of All Saints, Bakewell with St Anne, Over Haddon

Registered charity no: 1133846

## **Independent Examiner's Report to the members of Bakewell Parochial Church Council**

I report on the financial statements for the year ended 31st December 2022.

## **Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner**

The charity's trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year (under section 144(2) of the Charities Act 2011 (the Act)) and that an independent examination is needed. It is my responsibility to:

examine the financial statements (under section 145 of the 2011 Act),

to follow the procedures laid down in the General Directions given by the Charity Commission (under section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act), and

to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.

## **Basis of independent examiner's report**

My examination was carried out in accordance with General Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the financial statements presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the financial statements, and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the financial statements present a 'true and fair' view and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.

## **Independent examiner's statement**

In the course of my examination, no matter has come to my attention:

1. which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in, any material respect, the requirements: to keep accounting records in accordance with section 130 of the 2011 Act; and to prepare financial statements which accord with the accounting records and comply with the accounting requirements of the 2011 Act; have not been met; or

2. to which, in my opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the financial statements to be reached.
