Report on the life and ministry of the Church By Rev. Kong Ching Hii 许广铮
A Word from the church minister, Rev Kong Ching Hii
written on 4th July 2024, the general election day of the United Kingdom
I share with you, my fellow pilgrims on the heavenward journey, the following thoughts and reflections. These words are from the bottom of my heart, mind and spirit. They are based on my limited observation and knowledge, conversation and interaction, and through the stories that I heard or gathered.
-
The need from the Chinese community is enormously demanding and challenging. This is based on the number of requests for support, hospital visit, funeral for the non-church family, and the news of the arrival of new migrants either from the mainland China or China-Hong Kong. Above all, the cry from the many Chinese congregations on this land is self-evident. We could also assume that since the mother land of the Chinese is developing and growing well in the recent decades, there will be no more new migrants to land on this shore. Yet, the arrival of the number of young and professional family proved otherwise. As a Chinese church in the heart of London, our vision is to readily reach out and to warmly welcome these friends into our fold. Thereafter, to grow and mature with them in the kingdom of God as true follower of Jesus Christ.
-
We are a uniquely distinctive church with three congregations, namely the Mandarin congregation (10:30am), International or English congregation (11am) and Cantonese congregation (1:30pm), the pioneer congregation. One of the stewards who was on sabbatical leave and had the chance to visit many other churches in London. The said steward returned with the statement that “Now, I rejoice and thankful for my church… we are blessed with a good pastoral team, distinctive three steward teams, and a whole wide range of church life and ministry….” Let us constantly celebrate and thank God for the diversity, unity and variety that we do enjoy here at London King’s Cross. Now, as we look into the future, this church must seize the opportunity and be willing to pay the cost to minister to our next generation. The question is: “What can I offer to God on the altar of worship?”
-
King’s Cross Methodist Church was first known as the church group in the Battle Bridge in December 1824. The ministry was started to meet the needs among the mothers and children in the area. In 1924, a decision was made to re-decorate the church for the next generation and beyond, including the international students from around the globe. As we shall commemorate the bicentennial anniversary of the mission in December 2024, we are challenged to constantly to build and to meet the needs of the next generation. Like the faithful who said in 1924, “… the chronicles of the next hundred years to come, men may say of the present generation as we say of those who began its activities ‘other men have laboured and we have entered into their labours.’” Let each of us therefore be wholeheartedly committed, to ardently continue and to joyfully complete the redevelopment project with our eyes fixed on the God of history.
The decision made by the Circuit team to close the student ministry for the next two year is a move to show our commitment to ensure the church redevelopment project will come to its fruition. I solicit your prayer is that God will send forth his faithful workers(ordained), dedicated stewards and committed disciples (lay person), together, we will be cheering, supporting and maturing each other until the hour we meet the returning Christ in the clouds.

Night Shelter Ministry
Kings Cross Methodist Church participated in Season 20 of the Winter Night Shelter in partnership with the Homeless project C4WS. Kings Cross hosted on a Thursday night / Friday morning from 2nd November 2023 to 21st March 2024. The shelter was full throughout the season and at the end of the season all guests had been found permanent accommodation. Two of the MCH students volunteered this year on a regular basis and Sherene Wong from the Cantonese Congregation very kindly helped out with the cooking. The budget for Season 20 was £4,000.00 with an additional £359.33 remaining from the donation given by Newbury Methodist Church (Kenet and Test Valley Circuit). Total expenditure was £3259.15 an increase of £1,657.73 (£82.88 per week) on last season. This was due to the rising cost of food and an increase in laundry costs. A breakdown of costs is as follows: Fresh food and toiletries £329.47; Food for dinner £906.73; Laundry service £1984.00; New shopping trolley £22.95; Christmas gifts for guests £16.00. The greatest expenditure was for laundry as Hamlet Laundry have increased their prices. A request was put to the Church Council to consider the purchase of a washer / drier before this season begins, which will significantly reduce the costs.
Season 21 will start on Thursday 7th November and will run for 22 weeks until Thursday 10th April. Volunteers will be needed to cover the evening, overnight, cooking and breakfast shifts.
Methodist Chaplaincy House
Following the decision made at Circuit Meeting that MCH will be closing in September, students have been preparing to move out and have started to look for alternative accommodation. To date eleven students have moved out with fourteen still in residence. Several students have asked to leave items in storage until they move into their new accommodation in September. It was agreed by the MCH Management Committee that students could store items in the luggage room at MCH provided they pay a £100.00 deposit. This will be returned when they collect their items. The purpose of the deposit is to ensure that MCH is not left with the expense of removing unwanted items that have not been collected.
The monthly House Meals will continue whilst we still have students in MCH although numbers will be depleted. The May House Meal was a collaboration between the MCH students and the CREW Fellowship and was well attended.
The MCH Management Committee are due to meet on Friday 26th July.
Pastoral support is still available for all remaining students and the lunch-time prayers continue twice a week. A Thanksgiving Service for the life of MCH was held on Sunday 7th July.
International Service
Congregation numbers are holding steady with an average attendance of 15-18 people each week. Pei-Ling Chay, Chloe Cheng, Bobo Lee, Rita Hui and Justin Yim continue to lead worship and Summer Chow and Terence Wong prepare and operate slides. We have so far been unable to recruit new people to join the serving team. On the fifth Sunday of each month, we are joined by members of C4 and it is hoped that in time the older members of C4 will feel encouraged to take on a serving role. This year we invited preachers to take part in a five-week sermon series on the book of Ecclesiastes.

-
The format of this fellowship being a shared responsibility amongst the group and having no set leader(s) remain the same.
-
Socials this year included dinners to celebrate Christmas and Chinese New Year.

Ministry Report of WAFFLE Fellowship By Daniel Chu 朱礼昌
There are currently 10 regular members in WAFFLE and we meet in person at church after Sunday service each week. We are comprised of working adults from mid-Twenties to Thirties. We have a rota system where we encourage every participant to lead sessions and discussions, and sessions include Bible studies, book studies, topical discussions, film discussions, and socials.
Key Highlights
-
Membership
-
1.1. Recently we have welcomed several new members who joined us either from Hong Kong or have recently moved to London
-
1.2. We find the sharing of life experiences very valuable and we cherish the relationships that we have built during this time
-
Bible Study and Discussion
-
2.1. We have been studying through Acts together as a group, using materials such as Gospel Coalition
-
2.2. Other topics include Love languages, discussions on the topic of justice
-
2.3. Fellowship provides us a safe and open space to discuss what scriptures mean to us in a personal level, and we are invited to explore how actions in the early church can teach us how we should act and minister in church today
-
Socials
-
3.1. Socials are a core part of our identity and it allows us to share a meal and other activities together, such as travelling and sightseeing
-
3.2. We put a particular emphasis on meeting in people’s homes as it creates an intimate and comfortable environment in which relationships can be built and sustained
-
3.3. We look forward to creating more opportunities in the future – we are currently planning a weekend away in Yorkshire in which we can share a time and space together for reflections and fun activities
Key Challenges and Needs
-
Lack of pastoral / ministerial support
-
1.1. Although WAFFLE has large been self-sufficient in terms of sharing responsibility for leading, organising discussions and encouraging at atmosphere of reflection and intimate sharing, we do feel that we need more pastoral support from the wider church leadership
-
1.2. We value and certainly welcome the type of life experience and practical advice that elders can bring
-
1.3. Members of the fellowship have expressed interest in learning about theological knowledge and gaining better understanding in biblical terminologies, which requires support from trained, knowledgeable pastoral worker
-
1.4. Suggestions : church leaders are welcome to join and participate in sessions in WAFFLE. We think that a senior figure within the group, someone who is visible and available at times of need, is something we would need
-
Lack of connection with other life groups / fellowships
-
2.1. We find that Fellowships in KCMC can operate in silos, and we would encourage events which can bring different fellowships together
-
2.2. We believe that different fellowships can bring different perspectives in Biblical and social issues which would broaden our understanding on these matters, and challenge us to be more empathetic and loving
-
2.3. Suggestions : Our hope is to host at least 2 joint fellowship sessions in the upcoming year and we encourage the church to lead and support these ventures

Ministry Report of the Mandarin Youth Fellowship By Maria Hii 许思炜
Maria Hii

Report of the Mandarin Youths’ MinistryPeriod September 2023 through to August 2024
MISSION STATEMENT : Encounters with Jesus, (Meet in Love).
Core team: Maria Hii
Youth Members: Average ~18 (2 newcomers recently).
Vision Statement and Goal of the Ministry: We aim to support the youths and young people (year 7 until year 13) in both their spiritual and social life; to help them grow in Christ to live a life that glorifies God and to become a testimony in their daily lives. We believe that the teenage/youth stage of one’s life is the most crucial and needs support and guidance in terms of growth in character and faith. We have 5 main themes: fellowship, mission, testimony, faith, and citizenship.
Ministry update:
-
Sept-Dec 23: We continue to have a rota plan to encourage youth to serve during fellowship and to participate in serving at main service (pianist, drummer, ushering, and ppt) every first Sunday of the month. We had 3 weeks with the Malaysian Digital Mission Team where they led the sessions. We started a new series: Search for Significance (which is based on a book, Search for Significance). In addition, we also continued with the "Encounter" series, to “encounter” God through the Bible.
-
Jan-April 24: We started Alpha Youth Course to re-establish (and establish) what the gospel is, Christianity, some apologetics, to know and grow in the Lord together. On the Alpha Weekend, we learnt more about the Holy Spirit too. This year’s Easter break, we went to Derby Camp. The theme is "Soon", talking about the end of the world and how we can be better prepared while waiting. Also, excitingly, we got to join a united fellowship event organized by CREW, bring C4 and the Mandarin Youth Group together. We also started a new "101" series to explore what Christian living is and values are based on the bible.
-
May-Aug 24: We continue the 101 series, serving in main service/youth group and completed the Alpha Youth Course. Exploring more about what the church is, what the Bible teaches us about finance, discipline and priorities, Bible reading and prayer, etc. We have a one-day outing to Go Ape to relax and celebrate after the exams. What is different this year is that we will wrap up the year after TeenStreet (youth camp). We are planning to have a summer ball to end and send off the youths who are going to university or other beyond school.
Ministry Challenges: 1) Insufficient number people to serve, therefore unable to provide holistic support and care to youths. 2) The environment where they are in, may cause them to be prone to staying stagnant in their spiritual growth.
Future plans and opportunities: Focussing on Growth (personal), Worship (to God) and Service (to community). 1) Next year: Encourage youths to desire more of God, to have a personal relationship with Him and to continue growing in His words. 2) Continuing 2-year plan: To host KXMC own youth camp and to fund raise for a cause and have youths to volunteer in the community. 3) 5-year: To go on a short-term mission trip. Pray that we may have a youth pastor to guide the youth ministry.

Ministry Report of C4 By Bobo Lee 李恺萦
C4 is a group for youths who are currently in secondary school (ages 11-18) trying to navigate through life as teenagers. This is a space for them to learn more about their faith and to share any challenges or struggles they are facing.
Time - 1:30pm to 3pm
Teachers - Waiman Yip, Daniel Chu, Cherry Ho, Chloe Cheng, Bobo Lee Attendance - 12 to 15 members (it can fluctuate during exam season/school holidays) Curriculum - We have continued to use the Scripture Union resources as a guide
Highlights
-
We welcomed new members to C4 (3 from Sunday School). To allow them to build better connections with each other, we continue to have fellowship on the 1st Sunday of the month where we have worship and play games together.
-
C4 were invited by CREW to join them and the mandarin youth for an evening of fellowship to encourage integration across the ministries. Although only 2 members from C4 attended, it was encouraging to see them connect with new people. We hope with the help of their parents, more youths will join next time. It is important for our youths to have more interaction with IS and CREW as it will be a natural next step for when they finish secondary school.
-
C4 performed their own version of “12 days of Christmas”. They were hesitant to participate at first, which is understandable as teenagers tend to be more shy with these types of activities. However, it was very encouraging to see all of them overcome this and contribute to the performance.
-
Youths have been joining International Service on the 5th Sunday of each month (if applicable) to give them exposure to a Sunday Service. After service ends, we would eat lunch and play some games together.
-
C4 joined Sunday School with dumpling making for Chinese New Year - it was great to have this time for them to interact with each other on a more casual basis.
-
Teachers lead two weeks at a time and we continue to have more leaders join each session to maintain relationships with the youths.
-
Some topics covered throughout the year include: the discipline of giving, spiritual gifts, respect, love, character study of Hannah.
Main challenges
-
Engagement during sessions - We have noticed a lack of engagement during worship and minimal participation during sessions and discussions. The teachers have had meetings to discuss these issues. Ultimately our aim is to support our youths and create a safe environment for them to express themselves and ask questions. These concerns have been raised to them and their parents directly and we are pleased to see an improvement in the second half of the year.
-
PHAT Camp - C4 are always encouraged to join PHAT Camp and this year we have 3 sign ups. It is good for them to experience God in a different environment and meet youths from all over the UK who are going through similar things to them. We will continue to encourage them to sign up next year and it would be helpful if parents can help us with this.

INDEPENDENT EXAMINER’S REPORT TO THE TRUSTEES OF KING CROSS METHODIST CHURCH
I report to the trustees on my examination of the accounts of the above charity (“the Trust”) for the year ended 31 August 2024.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND BASIS OF REPORT
As the charity's trustees, you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (“the Act”).
I report in respect of my examination of the Trust’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination, I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.
INDEPENDENT EXAMINER’S STATEMENT
I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination (other than that disclosed below *) which gives me cause to believe that in, any material respect:
-
the accounting records were not kept in accordance with section 130 of the Charities Act; or
-
the accounts did not accord with the accounting records; or
-
the accounts did not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a ‘true and fair’ view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.
I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
