## **WESTBOROUGH METHODIST CHURCH**

## **TRUSTEES’ ANNUAL REPORT**

## **For the period 1[st] September 2024 to 31[st] August 2025**

**Charity Name: Registered Charity Number: Charity’s principal address**

Westborough Methodist Church 1133833 Westborough, Scarborough YO11 1TS

## **Objectives, Achievements and Activities**

## **Objectives**

The purposes of Westborough Methodist Church are and shall be deemed to have been since the Date of Union the advancement of:

- The Christian faith in accordance with the doctrinal standards and discipline of The Methodist Church

- Any charitable purpose for the time being of any Connexional, District, Circuit, local or other organisation of The Methodist Church.

- Any charitable purpose for the time being of any society or institution subsidiary or ancillary to The Methodist Church.

- Any purpose for the time being of any charity being a charity subsidiary or ancillary to The Methodist Church.

## **Public Benefit**

The main activities undertaken by the Church for the Public Benefit in relation to these objectives, are:

- Provision of the Methodist form of Christian worship through regular Sunday and weekday services.

- Provision of facilities for the Scout & Guide uniformed groups from the ages of 4 to 18 years.

- - Provision of facilities for Lego Church meeting once a week in term time for lego building depicting a Bible passage and sharing together in a light meal.

- Donations to Connexional and local charities, including a commitment to giving 10% of the value of the previous year’s offertories, gift aid receipts and donations received, to those charities.

- The provision of facilities to support disadvantaged groups and individuals, such as the homeless and those blighted by alcoholism and by providing a Warm Welcome one day a week throughout the year.

- Meeting groups, such as the 60+ Youth Club and C.A.M.E.O., to improve companionship and reduce loneliness amongst the elderly.

- The provision of accommodation to the local community including Scarborough Community Fridge, with a Warm Welcome provision by the church and the school uniform recycle scheme and to educational and health improvement groups.

- A coffee shop, open to the public and offering inexpensive snacks.

## **Membership**

The Church membership was 94 at the end of the connexional year.

It is with sadness that we report the death during this year of members of the Church Anne Dargue, Joan Taylor, Jean Thomas, Loreen Myers, Nore Pugh, Elsa Monteith and Eileen Pidd and others who have given local service over many years. Joy Eccles was transferred to Scarborough Christian Fellowship and Gill Casper to Queen Street. Beatrice Haygan, Francis Boakye, Elizabeth Boakye, John Cobbinah, Eunice Ako and Margaret Ofoshene were received by transfer.

## **Achievements and Activities**

The Church continues to benefit from over fifty dedicated volunteers, who serve as stewards, worship leaders, uniformed organisation leaders, coffee lounge, Lego church and warm welcome supporters, cleaners etc. and without whom many of the worship and community focussed activities could not take place.

Whilst we are not enforcing any restrictions, we are continuing to provide hand sanitisers at all entrances, face coverings are available, and we are asking people to respect one another’s space.

The Coffee Bar is open three days a week. Church meetings regularly take place as do bookings for meetings, concerts and many other purposes, although many more would be welcome. We are pleased to the service of Mrs. Carol Evans at the Bookings and Premises Administrator which has again seen an increase in regular and ‘one off’ bookings. Equally, the services of Mr Marc Anderton as the Caretaker are greatly appreciated.

The Circuit continues employs a Community Worker, and we are fortunate that Tom Clayton is continuing to spend some of his time working from Westborough and reaching our local community. Notably a ‘Uniform Recycle’ scheme has helped in excess of 100 local children to receive school uniforms at no cost to their families and Lego Church which meets on a Wednesday from 4.15 p.m. to 5.30 p.m. during termtime, which has also created a link with the local Primary School at Gladstone Road.

## **Financial Review**

The balance of an earlier interim legacy distribution was received and is being in the Church’s TMCP investment cash account. This has resulted in the Church’s total income for the year being £292,644. The Church therefore produced full accruals accounts for the year ended 31[st] August 2025.

As a result of the legacy receipt, the net outturn for 2024/25 is a surplus of £149,203. However excluding the legacy, the result would have been a deficit of £57,070 (2024 surplus on the accruals basis of £17,267).

The church’s total funds at 31[st] August 2025 were £1,668,068. Of these funds £1,305,322 were invested in fixed assets and £854 related to restricted funds. Liquid unrestricted funds, including the investments held by TMCP amounted to £362,746. The underlying reserve level of £95,000is in line with the current reserves policy set out below.

## **Property Matters:**

The amount of property repairs in the year was £7,763.

## **Statement of Charity’s Policy on Reserves:**

The Church aims to hold in reserve sufficient money in our general funds to cover six month’s normal expenditure i.e. currently approximately £45,000.

In addition, we need to have available a ‘sinking fund’ of approximately £50,000 to cover unexpected building expenses bearing in mind that the church building is over 160 years old.

## **1 Restricted Funds**

Restricted Funds at 31 August 2025 consist of the balance of income received specifically for Lego Church and Thursday Friends Club.

## **2 Endowment Funds**

There are no endowment funds.

## **3 Details of any Funds materially in deficit**

- There are no funds in deficit.

## **Declaration**

The Trustees declare that they have approved this Trustees’ Report.

Signed on behalf of the Charity’s Trustees
