For the period 1* September 2023 to 31° August 2024
Charity Name: Westborough Methodist Church Registered Charity Number: 1133833 Charity’s principal address Westborough, Scarborough YO11 1TS
Objectives, Achievements and Activities
Objectives
The purposes of Westborough Methodist Church are and shall be deemed to have been since the Date of
-
Union the advancement of: - The Christian faith in accordance with the doctrinal standards and discipline of The Methodist Church
-
- Any charitable purpose for the time being of any Connexional, District, Circuit, local or other organisation of The Methodist Church.
-
- Any charitable purpose for the time being of any society or institution subsidiary or ancillary to The Methodist Church.
-
- Any purpose for the time being of any charity being a charity subsidiary or ancillary to The Methodist Church.
-
Public Benefit The main activities undertaken by the Church for the Public Benefit in relation to these objectives, are: - Provision of the Methodist form of Christian worship through regular Sunday and weekday services.
-
- Provision of facilities for the Scout & Guide uniformed groups from the ages of 4 to 18 years. - Provision of facilities for Lego Church meeting once a week in term time for lego building depicting a Bible passage and sharing together in a light meal.
-
- Donations to Connexional and local charities, including a commitment to giving 10% of the value of the previous year's offertories, gift aid receipts and donations received, to those charities.
-
- The provision of facilities to support disadvantaged groups and individuals, such as the homeless and those blighted by alcoholism and by providing a Warm Welcome one day a week throughout the year.
-
- Meeting groups, such as the 60+ Youth Club and C.A.M.E.O., to improve companionship and reduce loneliness amongst the elderly.
-
- The provision of accommodation to the local community including Scarborough Community Fridge and the school uniform recycle scheme and to educational and health improvement groups. \
-
- A coffee shop, open to the public and offering inexpensive snacks.
Membership
The Church membership was 96 at the end of the Connexional year. It is with sadness that we report the death during this year of members of this Church Dorothy Ruff and Betty Simpson and others who have given loyal service over many years. Hilary Sims was transferred to Filey and Jacqueline Callaghan’s membership was transferred to Ebberston in the Ryedale Circuit. Henry Andrews and Josephine Enniful was received by transfer and Dorothy Longthorne by transfer from Other Churches.
Achievements and Activities
The Church continues to benefit from over fifty dedicated volunteers, who serve as stewards, worship leaders, uniformed organisation leaders, coffee lounge, Lego church and warm welcome supporters, cleaners etc. and without whom many of the worship and community focussed activities could not take place.
The Coffee Bar is open three days a week. Church meetings regularly take place as do bookings for meetings, concerts and many other purposes, although many more would be welcome. We have been pleased to welcome Mrs. Carol Evans at the Bookings and Premises Administrator which has seen an increase in regular and ‘one off bookings.
The Circuit continues employs a Community Worker, and we are fortunate that Tom Clayton is continuing to spend some of his time working from Westborough and reaching our local community. Notably a ‘Uniform Recycle’ scheme has helped in excess of 100 local children to receive school uniforms at no cost to their families and Lego Church which meets on a Wednesday from 4.15 p.m. to 5.30 p.m. during termtime, which has also created a link with the local Primary School at Gladstone Road.
Financial Review
A legacy of £60,000 was received and the balance of an earlier interim legacy distribution is due imminently, being placed into the Church’s TMCP investment cash account. The Church’s total income for the year being £149,895. The Church therefore produced Receipts and Payments accounts for the year ended 31% August 2024.
The net outturn for 2023/24 is a deficit of £51,594 (2023 surplus on the R&P basis was £200,504).
The church’s total funds at 31% August 2024 were £250,610 (including those balance held by internal organisations). Of these funds £296 related to restricted funds and £62,624 were held in TMCP investments.
Property Matters:
The amount of property repairs in the year was £30,223
Statement of Charity’s Policy on Reserves:
The Church aims to hold in reserve sufficient money in our general funds to cover six month’s normal expenditure i.e. currently approximately £45,000.
In addition, we need to have available a ‘sinking fund’ of approximately £50,000 to cover unexpected building expenses bearing in mind that the church building is over 160 years old.
1 Restricted Funds Restricted Funds at 31 August 2024 consist of the balance of income received specifically for Lego Church plus funds held directly by the 60+ Youth Club.
- 2 Endowment Funds
There are no endowment funds.
3 Details of any Funds materially in deficit
There are no funds in deficit.
Declaration
The Trustees declare that they have approved this Trustees’ Report.
