## Wolfwood Animal Rescue Registered Charity No:1133826 ## **Trustees Report for the year ending 31st July 2024** ## **Trustees:** Calvin Routledge, Robin Davies, Paul Daley, Sarah Hayland, Juli Scanlan, Graham Clark and Heather Wakelin. ## - **Charity Aims** - to relieve the suffering of abandoned, unwanted and neglected dogs in need of care and protection, by the provision of temporary accommodation and a re - homing service. - to relieve the suffering of injured and displaced wildlife by a recovery service and provision of care and rehabilitation. - to provide sanctuary and care for rescue horses and ponies until permanent adoption is found. - to advance public education in matters concerning the welfare of such animals and birds. ## **Report** Since it’s inception in 2007 it was always envisaged that the charity would eventually own it’s own site for the rescue centre. In late 2022 our base within rented buildings and land changed ownership and we were given a five year lease to rent, with a review after that time. During which time the charity has been on the lookout for a suitable location. To date, nothing appropriate has been on the market, the search goes on. Many years of careful spending, with no compromise in animal care, combined with a number of legacies and generous donations have made this possible, for which we are hugely grateful. Wolfwood has five horses in sanctuary which are managed and well cared for off site, by charity staff. Unfortunately they don’t generate any income, but we are in a position to be able to keep them happy and healthy. Wildlife casualties continue to arrive in need of care and rehabilitation, either from RSPCA Officers, local Vets, the Police, or members of the public. April to September is always a very busy time with tiny wildlife casualties demanding dedication and commitment from the staff. It’s a time for all to expand knowledge and experience. The steady stream of dogs being signed over for rehoming, either by members of the public or from Lancaster City Council Stray Dog System fills our available accommodation. Some breeds are easy to find new homes for, while others, maybe with issues, take longer. The staff work with any problems, in the hope that any dog who maybe hasn’t been handled correctly in the past, can eventually find their forever loving home. Most of the time our vetting system is very effective. Our two charity shops are well supported by donations and shoppers alike. We have areas of serious depravation nearby and provide quality inexpensive goods. We have fantastic hardworking and loyal volunteers who are valued and with whom we enjoy a good working relationship; the centre manager is part of their team and easily accessible to air any issues or concerns. The revenue from these shops provides a big chunk of our income. We are very grateful for all the support we receive. Any opportunities to visit organisations to share and raise awareness of the charity is taken up. We continue to provide work experience placements for schools, colleges and Duke of Edinburgh students and happy to accommodate those in the community who may need more supervision. Our website remains an effective communication with the availability of dogs needing new loving homes, being update daily. A monumental issue by far since our last report has been the implementation of the ill thought out inclusion of the XL Bully Ban within the Dangerous Dog Act 1991, which was enforced on 31st December 2023. Wolfwood had several dogs which fitted the criteria, but were wonderful and safe dogs. Huge efforts were made to rehome them before the ban came into force, but over the course of the weeks since the ban, twenty seven lovely dogs who didn’t deserve to die, were put to sleep! And it continues. Dogs who would have made fantastic pets. The effect on the staff and volunteers was, and continues to be, overwhelming. The mental health of all involved plummeted and one resigned. The mood was one of devastation. The government brought in a ban, which it’s wider implications were not thought through and has no supportive network. Dogs who were definitely not Bully’s, yet fit the destruction criteria, had to be destroyed, by law, they were caught in the system while waiting for decisions from the powers that be - no guidance, nothing at all, is forthcoming, or on any agenda. Staff, especially the manager/charity founder, have had to deal with distraught dog owners, while being distressed themselves. That is not what working within animal rescue is about. Bully Ban aside, Wolfwood is sustainable, thriving and continues to provide a valuable community service. It is much needed, hard work, yet very, very rewarding.
