to relieve the suffering of abandoned, unwanted and neglected dogs in need of care and protection, by the provision of temporary accommodation and a re - homing service.

to relieve the suffering of injured and displaced wildlife by a recovery service and provision of care and rehabilitation.

Wolfwood has experienced another successful year caring for, and rehabilitating wildlife casualties, working with rescue/needy dogs until new loving homes are found and providing sanctuary for a number of horses and ponies. The staff have a good working relationship with local Vets, RSPCA Officers and when required, Officers of the local Police Force. The Charity Founder welcomes opportunities to speak at community groups. He shares his passion for the interesting, challenging, but extremely rewarding work, and how the charity is funded. He is well received and usually returns with much appreciated kind donations.
Since the conclusion of the Covid pandemic and it’s restrictions, volunteers are now back on site, with work placements from various colleges and organisations resuming. In many cases the experience assists students decide if future employment working with animals is what they really want, or can cope with, it can be quite a revelation for them.
A steady stream of dogs pass through, with some breeds easier to rehome than others. Suitable homes are not always forthcoming. Unfortunately and occasionally, a dog may have to wait some considerable time, but they are given the best time and care while waiting.
The wildlife casualty season is always busy. It used to occur from April to early September, but climate change has made it less predictable - nature is becoming confused.
Our two very successful charity shops continue to generate a healthy revenue, especially as they are located in an area of significant poverty and provide inexpensive quality goods. The staff and volunteers don’t always have an easy job, but they are loyal and hardworking, which we hugely appreciate and we are well supplied with donated goods.
A few changes have occurred within the staff, including the appointments of an Administration Officer and Equine Manager. Our teams work well together and it’s an ongoing learning experience, which includes keeping records and the maintenance of our website, not just working with the residents. A number are students, who we employ at the weekends. Unfortunately, we turn away a steady stream of employment applicants, the charity can only accommodate a limited number.
In January 2023, as a result of the resignation of one of our Trustees, three new ones were appointed. All have been long time, reliable supporters of the charity and we have confident expectation of gaining from their varying skills and expertise.
Wolfwood doesn’t own it’s own premises. Renting within a privately owned pet boarding concern since its foundation, the charity has been extremely grateful. A few amazing and very welcome legacies and the notification of one further, is enabling the Trustees to consider and plan for the future. The creation of a new M6 junction, which has been on the cards for many years and will encroach on our current location, causing a negative effect on all aspects of the rescue work, during and after construction, is giving us serious cause for thought.
Ownership of the premises changed in March 2023 when it was acquired by the University of Lancaster. We are now leasing the facilities from them, with a review of the lease due in five years time.
The horses and ponies have been transferred to privately owned purpose built accommodation, which is eminently more appropriate, a lot easier and more efficient for giving the care and exercise they need and deserve.
It was always envisaged for Wolfwood to be independent and have ownership of it’s own centre. It has taken sixteen years to become a sustainable charity, recognised for it’s passionate work with wildlife casualties, alongside giving love, care, treatment and training to rescue/ dogs in need, of a new loving home, and providing sanctuary for a few horses and ponies.
Wolfwood is incredibly grateful for the love and support received over the years, acknowledging that other animal rescue centres may not be so fortunate. We look forward to an exciting future.
