Charity Aims -

to relieve the suffering of abandoned, unwanted and neglected dogs in need of care and protection, by the provision of temporary accommodation and a re-homing service.

to relieve the suffering of injured and displaced wildlife by a recovery service and provision of care and rehabilitation.

to provide sanctuary and care for rescue horses and ponies until permanent adoption is found.

to advance public education in matters concerning the welfare of such animals and birds.

In April 2021, following the devastating and premature passing of much loved Trustee Alison McGowan, replacement Linda Mallard was appointed. Alison wasn’t just a wonderful ambassador for the charity, she was one of our City Council Dog Wardens. The welfare and rehoming of the stray dogs hugely benefited from her first hand knowledge and expertise. She was highly regarded, a joy to work with and is very much missed.
Linda has long shared her home with a Wolfwood dog and in recent years her skill and experience as a Dog Coach has been used in preparing the rescue dogs for integrating into a new home. We are pleased she has joined the team as she continues to donate her time.
In early July 2021 our first and longest serving staff member collapsed. She was subsequently diagnosed with an advanced terminal illness and unable to continue working. This was during the Covid19 pandemic which made for a very distressing time, especially as also, her daughter is a qualified member of our small team of staff. The devastating effect of all this is ongoing.
The consequences of Covid19 is continuing to seriously curtail the life and activities of the charity. There are no volunteers onsite and all contact with the public has been outdoors at our main gate.
In August 2020 our two charity shops re opened post lockdown, our valued volunteers embracing the strict Covid guidelines, gaining a City Council Certificate of Safe Practice… one of the very few awarded in our area! It has been challenging, but we are fortunate to have wonderful supporters of the shops and amazing volunteers who run them. We have gained some new ones, which is encouraging. The shops continue to be well supplied with donated goods to turn into charity funds, for which we are extremely grateful. We have an excellent reputation for giving value for money, being located where there are some areas of significant hardship.
In the early part of the lockdown the number of dogs needing new homes fell dramatically, with our lowest level recorded since the charity began. The figures started to increase when people returned to work - interesting to note! The quieter period of time afforded the staff the opportunity to train, share knowledge and work more intensely with all the rescue animals. The horses and ponies were in the best condition ever, on all levels. A bonus of the pandemic restrictions.
It also gave the charity time to re evaluate where it’s going within the original vision it was set up for. The wildlife casualty work warrants it’s own purpose built facility and some of the horses and ponies in long term sanctuary can be used for developing an amenity to work alongside people with mental and physical health needs. Ideas and funding are being explored, but it’s exciting!
The wildlife casualties failed to acknowledge what was happening in the world around them and continued to arrive in need and for life saving care, especially between April and September. Yet again the staff gained in knowledge and experience during the busy time.
The public fundraising events obviously didn’t take place, but supporters have been wonderful and innovative by running online events to raise cash. We have a whole new network of enthusiastic supporters, which is immensely encouraging.
Wolfwood has survived Covid 19 and our bank balance is in a healthy position to take a few steps towards fulfilling the initial Vision.

Responslblllties and basis of report I report in respect of my examination of the Trust's accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carying out my examination, I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.
