The tasks of the Circuil are.. a) to make invitations to Ministers b) to appoint and manage lay employees c) organisation of preaehers, including accreditation of new preachers, ongoing review, and ihrough publication of Ihe quarterly preaching plan allocalion of accredited preachers to take all services d) to develop Circuit policies and maintain a strategic Circuit Mission Plan. e) to promole new initialives in line with Circuit Policy, but outside the scope of existing churches acting individually to facilitale the sharing of activities and resources across the churches of the Circuit g) to manage the Circuit Budget to develop new initiatives, and to enable financial contributions to support the work of District and Connexion. h) to provide manses of appropriale standard for Presbyters slationed within the Circuit i) to encourage ihe sharing together in complementary ways of lay and ordained staff in every parl of the work of ministry j) to provide practical help in training and equipping churches for the tasks which they undertake. k) lo ensure Ihat the procedures for safeguarding children, young people and vulnerable adults are strictly followed. In undertaking these activities, the Circuit Trustees exercise due regard in ensuring compliance with the Charity Commission's guidance on public benefit and on charilies for the advancement of religion. Dtrby$hl¥e PIDrth Eotsi Trustees, Annual report for the yearended 31"August 2025 The ongoing activities of Ihe fourteen individual churches wilhin the Circuit, which wilh one exception (Central Melhodist Church, Chesterfield) are exempted chaiilies, included.. 1. Public acts of worship on Sundays and other days at churches, or online. Services are led by minislers, local (lay) preachers and worship leaders. At year end the combined church membership stood provisionally at 570. 2. Aclivities for children and young people across various churches wiihin the circuit. 3. Public availability of pastciral assistance. 4. Arrangement of weddings, baptism8, and funerals. 5. Availability of church premises for lettings for approved purposes to external organisations, subject to individual church councils, agreemenl. Contribution of Volunteers: The managing Iruslees all serve in a voluntary capacity wilh the exception of presbyters stationed within the Circuil who receive stipends and those lay employees who additionally act as trustees, and each receive a salary from the Circuit for iheir role. Achievements: l. The circuit continued to support the work of its fourteen churches in many ways. 2. Public acts of worship were held regularly on Sundays at each church in the Circuit, whilst certain services were hybrid services enabling those unable to attend in person to participate online. 3. In addition to public worship, missional aclivities have continued lo lake place at various places across the circuit including children's activities,. toddlers, groups and messy church evenls. 4. Several churches have also been active in providing support for their local community through initiatives such as coffee mornings,. luncheon clubs for those who live alone and by hosting warm spaces, the latter often being grani funded by the local authority. 5. Churcheg across the circuit have also provided meeting places for a variety of external community organisalions. many of which enjoy a close relationship with the churches beyond the formal letting agreemenls which apply. 6. Ministry across the circuit was exercised by two full time Presbyters in pastoral charge of the fourteen churches and a part liffle locally employed Presbyter, supported by Supernumerary ministers and accrediled local preachers, who together preached at around 729 public acts of worship during the year. Training and monitoring of local preachers and worship leaders took place across the circuit principally through the quarterly Circuit leaders of Worship and Preachers, meeling. 7. At the end of Ihe year, the Titular Superintendenl Minister, Rev Gill Newlon compleled her time in the role and also Ihe role of Distiict Chair, whilst Rev Mark Cairick became the Circuit Superintendent Minister and Chair of Trustees. Rev. Richard Harris and Rev. Mark Carrick were Set to continue their ministry in the Ciicuit until 2028 and 2030 respectively. 8. Rev. Debbie Hodgson, a supernumerary minister living and worshipping in ihe Circuil, conlinued to offer her services as a part time locally employed Presbyter, principally supporting Bolsover Methodist Church. 9. The end of the year saw Ihe complelion of the terms of office of two of Ihe long-standing Circuit Stewards, Roger Jones and Norman Buck after a great many years of service to this Circuit and ils predecessors. 10. During Ihe year, the Circuit also Saw the departure of its two Administrators, Richard Vintin and Kaien Perry who had job shared the role and had considerable experience having worked for the Circuits which had merged to form the present Circuit. 11. The Circuit was delighted to be able to recruit a new Circuit Administrator and Kelly Gibbons stepped into the role in April 2025 on a full-time basis. 12. The Circuit wa8 also thrilled to gain a new Circuil Steward, Stephen Pointer who had also stepped into the role of Local Preachers Secretary following the role becoming vacant. 13. The five manses for which ihe circuit is responsible were maintained by the Circuit to ensure that the accommodation needs of presbyters and their families were met. August 2025 Surplus to requirements from September 2024, the Circuil agreed Ihat the Bolsover manse would be sold, along with the Hasland manse and the Loundsley Green manse was let from August 2024. 14. The circuit has continued to work in partnership with The Freedom Community project. a Christian charity working to supporl people who are stiuggling with poverty in the Bolsover area. During the year, Ihe former Hillslown Methodist Church building continued to accomfflodate the charities foodbank and administrative offices, however, by year-end, due to an opportunity to move to larger premises, notice had been given to vacate the property, which was rerbted from the Circuit, initiating discussions on the future of the building. 15. Following Hillstown Methodist Church becoming vacant, the decision was taken to sell the building and site, subject to gaining the necessary approval from TMCP. 16. In August the final service was held at Duckmanton Methodist Church due to declining membership and attendance. The managing Iruslees had taken the decision to sell the site, a decision which was approved by the Circuit meeting. 17. Further quinquennial inspections were undertaken at three churches. The Circuit includes in its five- year rolling programme of property inspections all local church buildings as well as its own properlies. 18. Safeguarding training and DBS checks were varied out as required for presbyters. lay employees and volunteers across the circuit and ils churches in accordance with the safeguarding policies of the Connexion. the Circuit, and of local churches. Data Protection Compliance with dala prolection legislation as requiied by the General Data Protection Regulalion (2018) was maintained for the circuit and its local churches through the annual data protection checklist process mandated by the Trustees for Methodisl Church Purposes. Grants. The Circuit fflay from time to time make grants lo its constituent churches, individuals and to external beneficiaries in support of any purpose consistenl wilh the provisions of CPD and the Calling of the Methodist Church, subject to the agreemenl of the Circuit Meeling and that of the District and Connexion where relevant. A grant policy was produced by Ihe Circuit to ensure a consistent approach was laken to approval of grants. Fundin model: The Circuit is funded principally by contributions from its individual local churches. however, may also receive donalions, lettings income from its properties and grants from the Sheffield District and Methodist Connexion. eserves Polic It is the policy of the Circuil to maintain liquid funds equivalent to at least six months, operational expendilure. This is principally the cosls of the ministers. stipends, lay employees, salaries, routine property maintenance, travel and other expenses and the payment of the District Assessmenl.
