PALESTINE TRAUMA CENTRE (UJ) REPORT OF THE TRUSTEES FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 JANUARY 2025
The trustees who are also directors of the charity for the purposes of the Companies Act 2006, present their report with the financial statements of the charity for the year ended 31 January 2025. The trustees have adopted the provisions of Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019).
OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES
Objectives and aims The Charity's objects are to relieve members of the Palestine Diaspora who are suffering from trauma-related mental health disorders.
The particular activities to achieve this are, but not exclusively;
-
1 Providing training and supervision, either by itself or in conjunction with other individuals and organisations, for staff working with individuals, children, families and groups who, as a result of war, conflict, occupation, natural and/or man-made disasters, have experienced wide-ranging levels of trauma, particularly in the Palestinian territories.
-
2 Supporting ongoing research into psycho-social programmes designed to alleviate trauma caused by war, conflict or occupation;
-
3 Encouraging the sharing of good therapeutic practice with other groups.
Significant activities
The "most extreme genocidal war in modern history" on the Gaza Strip continues to this day. Living conditions have worsened so much that all elements of a basic decent life have disappeared. The closure of crossings, the lack of food, water, energy and medical supplies, the forced movement of whole populations, the relentless bombardment and the destruction of a health service have afflicted the people of Gaza as never before. All staff at PTC(UK) have been affected: family members killed, homes destroyed and the centre itself bomb-damaged. Activities continue, but relocated to different areas of the strip and often in the street or in tents. In Mawasi Khan Yunis, Deir al-Balah, al-Nuséirat camp, and Gaza City Family Therapy and Focusing teams had 87 recreational and psychological support activities for about 2,550 children and mothers. The Days of Joy Team had 53 recreational activities for 4,940 children. 10 sports activities were organised for 200 displaced children in Al-Nuseirat camp. The total number of beneficiaries of children and mothers in displacement camps reached 7,690 children this year.
Public benefit
Meanwhile in the UK, advocacy increased with several visits or letters to MPs to explain the details of the suffering in Gaza and to request an end to the destruction and siege. Online meetings with the Gaza team and UK supporters were organised. Information documents about genocide and emergency therapy measures were printed. Along with the UK-Palestine Mental Health Network, PTC(UK) submitted written evidence to the Foreign Affairs Committee's inquiry into the Israel Palestine Conflict.
| ACHIEVEMENT AND PERFORMANCE | Charitable activities PTC(UK) maintained good relations with chief funder Muntada Aid and with 13 Rivers Trust as well as a host of loyal : small groups like St Albans Friends of Palestine, Brent Friends of Palestine, North Herts PSC and Norwich Stop the | War. Links with the Rights for Time Project at Birmingham University continue with discussion about future work on | . post-conflict Psychotherapy. Publicity in the form of children’s questions about the dire situation for Gaza’s children proved very successful and was translated and distributed across the world. The number of presentations in the UK : increased. Above all, the Gaza team of therapists continued to work every day in appalling conditions helping to sustain resilience in children and families.
FINANCIAL REVIEW
| Reserve ss policyremain at a low level because PTC(UK)'s funding should be for travel costs and to cover stays in Gaza. There are no other overheads apart from the regular employment of the project co-ordinator. This year money was again spent on insurance for liabilities and trustee indemnity and limited aspects of travel. This was thought necessary because of | the sensitive nature of our work and the very real risks involved. | Page 2 |
