REFUGEE RADIO LIMITED (REGIsfERED NUMBER: 06603729) REPORT OF THE TRusfEES FOR ThE YEAR ENDED 31 MAY 2024 OBJECTIVES AND AcfIwiTIES Significant activities Refugee Radio is a charity based in Brighton and Hove and working throughout East and West Sussex to support refugees, asylum seekers and other vulnerable migrants, especially those who have been traumatised through torture, war andlor sexual violence and who might be suffering mentsl health issues and isolation. l-Health Su We facilitate mentsl-health support-groups for refugees and asylum seekers suffering from complex PTSD, stress and depression. We have been running the groups every week Sin 2011. They provide a space for people to safely share their problems and support each other. ra maTh ra We provide long-term EMDR therapy for refugees and asylum seekers through our partnership with Brighton Therapy Centre. The intervention is for people suffering from complex wfsD who are excluded from accessing support from mainstream health services. The project helps people to speak about their traumatlc experiences and begln the journey of healing. vi We deliver specialist 1-2-1 advice and casework for refugees and asylum ekerS who are experienclng homelessness, unemployment, disability and sickness so that they can access the support that they are entitled to. We advocate for people and represent them in benefit disputes and appeals. This project helps people to speak up when they are being excluded or discriminated against and to support each other as a way of promoting resillen at the indlvldual and community level. We run regular Social actlvltle5 for isolated refugees and asylum seekers, including everything from cycling to hiking, baking to dancing. These help people to make new friends and combat loneliness. dPod We produce radio programmes by and about refugees and migrants to help ralse awareness of their experIen5 and to combat negats've stereotyping. We help refugee musicians and writers to find new audiences. These enable refugee volces to be heard. We publish books collecting refugee life stories and oral histories so that they can recorded and preserved. Our beneflclaries come from around Africa, the Middle East and the Indian subcontinent. They are all refugees, asylum seekers and other vulrierdble iiiiyrdiiLs aiid i))ost al-e suffei'ing with PTSD as a SuIt of their traumatic experienc in their home countries. The majority of our beneficiaries are long-term unemployed and many a150 have physical injuries and associated health problems from torture. In previous years, our beneficiaries were evenly split btheen those who have been granted refugee statu5 and those who are still asylum seekers. Everything has changed rentlY because Brighton and Hove has become a "dispersal" area agaln which means that the Home offi Is now placing asylum seekers In the city. They are getting little to no support at all from the Home Office and the city has no additional funding to cope with the new demand for seices. A significant number of the newly dispersed a5ylurn seekers are attively sulcidal and have high needs. We are working very dosely wlth those who are most at risk and monitoring developments. Public benefit The Trustees certify that they have had and paid due regard to the Charity Commission guidan on public benefit in deciding what artivities the charity should undertake. Thi5 they believe is demonstrated in the above paragraphs. ACHIEVEMENT AND PERFORMANCE We are now running thr mental-health support groups acros5 Sussex every week- in Brighton, Ha5tings and Eastboume. We have expanded the number of groups and locations to meet the growing need from asylum *ker5 housed in emergency hote15 in those areas. We have nad a very posittve partner5nip wittl ttie SanoTu<lry Cdié ili Eastbourne who have established an exemplary mtyjel for joint service operations. FINANCIAL REVIEW Reserves The level of reserves is regularly monitored by the Trustees. The Trustees would consider a level of unrestricted reserves equivalent to 3 months expenditure to be appropriate to be held at any one ts'me. We have made good progress over the past te1ve months and hope to reach this target in the next year through continued trading of training and services.
