OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES

The company's objects and principal activities are to:

The year 2021/2022 saw the return of face-to-face classes in conjunction with a weekly Zoom class. The charity’s sole employee was furloughed, or part-furloughed as appropriate, under the government’s Job Retention Scheme.

The main objectives and activities for the year continued to focus upon the recruitment of 'hard to reach' speakers of English as an additional language many of whom have children in Richmond schools.

Activities included:

ACHIEVEMENTS AND PERFORMANCE

As the restrictions of the pandemic eased, we restored our former face to face classes as well as a full programme of activities and events. Classes have been introduced in two new areas of the borough and have attracted good attendance. We are now teaching approximately 80 learners including new arrivals from the Ukraine and Hong Kong.

A large number of our current learners are also committed to regular voluntary positions such as working in local charity shops, helping out at their children’s schools and 8 learners are regular volunteers with our WFSC (Women’s Friendship Swimming Club).

Many learners attend accredited classes at local colleges in addition to attendance at our more informal classes. Those who are in paid employment include those who run their own businesses and others who have found work in schools and other organisations.

Funding was received from two major local charities, Richmond Parish Lands Charity and The Hampton Fund as well as a grant from The National Lottery and various private donations.

As a result of an internal review, we reviewed our strategy for the next three years for the charity and secured trustees with HR and ESOL backgrounds.

And finally, we were Highly Commended by Community Heroes Scheme.

FINANCIAL REVIEW

As the coronavirus restrictions were lifted, face-to-face classes resumed which meant an increase in external costs compared to the previous year. However, the charity secured an increased grant from one of its major donors which enabled the charity to offer additional classes. A positive financial outcome of £956 for the period was generated with funds carried forward of just over £22,000.

Principal Income Sources in 2021/2022

PLANS FOR FUTURE PERIODS

As a result of the internal review, we planned to secure the services of an office manager to support the CEO as we continue to broaden our work across the borough.

We are also planning to introduce new classes in the borough using the services of sessional teachers. Furthermore, we hope to be part of a study undertaken by University of Roehampton which is reviewing the influence of a second language in the home. In order to achieve our aims, we are looking at other sources of fundraising to support our activities which is proving challenging during this cost-of-living crisis.
