The financial statements comply with the Charities Act 2011, the Companies Act 2006, the Memorandum and Articles of Association, and Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective1 January 2015).

Chairs report

I have been chair of St Pauls Centre Directors for twelve years and with the effects of the Covid pandemic still around, we have continued to keep people safe, by making sure the building is a safe place. We continue with all sanitising procedures throughout the building. I would like to express my thanks to that small team of volunteers who willingly give care every week for those in need of food, and a warm friendly space. I am grateful to Durham County Council, Durham Community Action, our local AAP and local Councillors who have funded many Covid Recovery activities during this period. We have worked in partnership with The Whistling Teapot in providing meals for our various activities. People welcomed the return of our monthly supper club, and we have seen regular numbers in attendance. From our AAP funding, we ran our Moving On project – helping people move on from the results of covid isolation and returning to community activities. One of the highlights was a trip to Beamish in February. Our Monday morning Art group contributed to the display of work as part of the opening of the Beamish 1950’s village, and in particular the home of Spennymoor artist Norman Cornish. In addition to this, we held our own art /photography exhibition within the centre. It was a very busy weekend, with activities for all ages. With the help of our Volunteers and funders, we have been able to continue our support groups and additionally supported families during school holidays with food and various activities. In April we commenced a weekly Dementia support group and a monthly bereavement support group both of which were instigated by our health practitioners and funded by the PCP. Throughout the winter period starting in November, due to the rising costs in energy bills and increased food costs, we opened our doors to those in need of a warm space. The building was open week days from 9am -9pm for those needing to keep warm, or in need of warm food. At this point, I must pay tribute and give thanks for the work carried out by our volunteers in these areas.

Through the commitment of the Trustees/Directors, and volunteers I have seen a positive change in people’s lives; the offer and acceptance of friendship, the provision of food for those in crisis and its acceptance with grateful thanks.

We continue to have a good relationship with the Whistling Teapot café and in particular with Angela Taylor the owner, with whom, in partnership we supported once again a free Christmas Day lunch for those lonely and vulnerable people within the area.

The Directors agreed that 2022 was the year to think again about seeking funding for the extension. The centre is extremely busy and we are continually turning people away, as we simply do not have the capacity to take bookings from other external agencies. We acquired the services of Lynsey Rollins architect, who produced our drawings and gained planning permission for an extension. We began the task of inviting builders for estimates and seeking funding. Thanks to our local AAP, our local councillors, and Town and Villages for their support in this process.

In closing, I would like to thank our partners The Whistling Teapot and Damascus Road Sound & Lighting group who share our premises, our grant awarding bodies Virgin Money, Durham Community Action, Spennymoor Area Action Partnership, Cllrs Liz Maddison, Hadrian Trust, and PCP for their support and to commercial agencies for their support in making our work in the community, possible.
