A5 a result of the Covid 19 pandemic, all 5 Mèètl¥E Hous05 were closed In late March 2020 and remalnèd closed untll
july. They were further closed In oarly 2021, bèfore re.openinE on a gradual basls from May 2021. DurSr)g thesè
lockdown tlm65, all Locèl Méètlngs took steps to continue to hold MeetSn8 for Worshlp through the use of technology,
such as Zoom, and to malntaln overslght of those Frlends who arè Istslated and p0551bly at greater rlsk. The strength of
the bond between Friends has been very apparent. Between July 2020 and the year end, before thè sacond lockdown,
there was a gradual re-openlng In accordance wlth the Governrnent's social dlstanclng guSdelinÈs.
Throughout the pandernic a lialson 8foupi inltlated by trustees and Including a member of each meetln& has exchanged
information and advice.
The closure of thÈ Meetlng Houses has resulted In a slgniflcant reduction in income from lettings in 2020 whlch was
part5ally offset by an interim Insuyance settlement recelved In July 2021.. In actordance wlth paragraph 5.53 of the
Charity Statement of Recommended Prattlcé, th15 settlement has not been reflected In these Accounts. Some staff
have contlnued In ernployment, whilst other staff have been placed In tha Government's'furlough, scheme on full
pay. The overall financial impact is not posslble to quantlfy at this time but should be readily manageable within the
Area Meetin￿$ Unrestricted Funds carrled forward at 31 December 2020. An initial action has been the walvlng of the
major repalrs quota, from Local Mèetirtgs to the Afea Major Repalrs Fund, for 2020.

In normal tirnes Inon-pandemicl Meotlng for Worshlp is held at least once a week in each of ourfive Meetlng Houses.
Each Local Mèetlng is responsiblè for a programme of activitles to support the splrltual life of the Me6tlng- th15 May
Include d15cussion groups, one-off talks and meetings for learning. Occaslonally the Local MèetSng5 work together to
organise ev¢ntS such a5 Quaker Quest. an outreach programme.
Our Area MeetlnB Is an actlve member of Quakers In Yorksh1￿ and as such, plays a role in fostering Quaker activStles
across the whole of Yorkshirè, including arranglng a summer hgllday pra8ramme for children and young peopl8 and a
re51dentlal famlly programme at Easter.
The Area Meetin8 Bursary Fund supports Members and Attend•rs wlshlng to attend cours85 and conferences to foster
thelr spiritual and personal development.
Wè are pleased that Friargate's additional rooms, cornpleted in 2016, continue to offer opportunltles to connect to and
support a wide range of voluntary organisations through the provislon of meetlng spacès. We now have a city centre
Quaker centre whlch serves the wider communitvi though the concept has been on hold during the pandemic. Each of
our other Meetlng Houses also provldes outreach through the provision of meeling spaces. Unfortunately, the
pandemlc has limited the use of, and Income from, all Meetin8 House spaces.
The Frlargate Warden's House, no longèr néeded by staff, Is now lèt to a famlly of Syrlan refugees.

Burlal Grounds
There are four burial grounds in the ownershSp of the Area Meetlng. The burlal ground In Thirsk adlolnlng the M•ètlng
House Is well malntained and available for the scatterSnE of ashes. The hlstoric ground at Dacre Is also malntalned, and
the ground at 5cotton Is malntaSned by a rnixture of pald professlonals and Harro8ate Quakers on a voluntary basls, and
has been brought back Into use by Frlends for slmple'green, burials, generatlng Income to support the malntenante of the
property. The burial ground at Th• Retreat In York Inot In the ownership of York Area Quakor Meetlngl has been
axtended, is well malntaSned and 15 in regular use. The hlstoric burlal 8round at Blshophill Is no longer in use, but Is
malntalned and can be vlslted. A leaflet has bèen prepared to publlclse the exlstènce of the burial grounds and thelr
availability for burla15 and the scatterlng of ashè5. The leaflet Is avallable In Lotal Mèetin85.

Revlew of actlvltles and flnanclal revlew
Durlng the year the Area MeotSng's ownershlp of 20 Falsgrave Crescent. York, has contlnued. Thls was a donatlon from
the Youn8 People's Fellowshlp IYPFI when the latter closad down. The building had its orl8lns as an Adult school set up
by the Rowntree famlly, but latterly has been occupled by thè YorkTravellers' Trust (Yfl and the York Raclal Equallty
Network IYRENI. During 2020 rent was pald to YAQM by Yrr and YREN, and YAQM ha5 Te5pon5ibility for maint8nanc•.
In early 2021 YREN rellnqulshed Its spaco and thls Is belng taken over by Yrr. A nÈw, formal lease has been agreed wlth
YIT. The property has be8n valued in th? Accounts by the Trustoos at £80,000, It appears on the balance she¢t as an
Investment property, and thls sum together wlth the donatlon and net Income from the property has been transferred to
d&slgnat•d fund of £90,465.
The total incomin8 resources of the chaTltable Company for the yearto 31 December 2020 were £274,84512019-
£508,941). The regular Income of the Charity com6s largely from the donatlons of members and attÈnders, and from the
letting of promlses to outside groups on weekdays and Saturdays, and occaslonally on Sundays. In the year to 31

Quaker5' regular8ivin8 and Collectlons.
The MeetlnB Housas are eentral to our purposes. but ara used by members only to a Ilmlted oxtent from Monday to
Saturday. The e05ts of maintenance and Improvement5, securlty, Insurance and some caretaklng have to bè met
Irre5pectlve of use. Therefore, income from lettings Is essential Sf the bulldlngs are to be maintained Sn a good condition
and updated ès necessary. We are also glad to see the Meeting Houses b•lng put to good use as a community resource.
Vork IFriarBatel and Harrogatè Use relatively largo Meetlng Houses, each with a numb6r of rooms that Can be let

Change In AccountlnB Poll¢y
Durlng the yearth• trusteès agreed a recommendation to change the accounting policy forthe valuatlon of the Meetlng
Houses in the Annual Atcount5. In at￿rdance wlth Section 18 of the Charity Statement of Recommended Practlce, the
Meetin8 Houses have been deemed as heritage assets at the date that they were transferred to the Area Meeting at nil
eonsldaratlon In 2011. The trustees conslder that the cost of obtalnlng è current market valuatlon of the buildings
would not be commensurate with the benefit to the users of the accounts and to the charlty for Sts own stewardshlp
purposes, and thèy theréfore determSned that a notional nil value should be placed on them In 2011. Major
Improvements to the Meetlng Housès slnce 2011, whlch represent developments at Friar8ate In the period 2014-2017,
aro Included In the Accounts at cost.
The effect of thè change In Accountlng Pollcy Is set out in Note 23 to the A￿o￿ntS.
The eurrent valuation of the Meetlng Housès for Insurant6 purposes Is £6.0m.

In March 2020, an extra one-off donatlon of £30,000 was made to Britain Yearly Meeting from Area Meetlng Funds. Thls

The company was Incorporated on 27 March 2009. The cornpany was re8lstered as a charltywlth the Charity Cornmlsslon

A trustee may be appointed for a perlod of three years. At the end of such period he or she may be reappointed on up

be appolnted for a further term exceeding the maxlmum term but only wlth the consent of the membèrs. A trustee who
has served a perlod of nine years may be rèappointed for further pariod5 of offlce If not less than one year has elapsed

The Board has the power to apptslnt up to three Frlends as additional co-opted trusteès. They will hold offlea until the

Current Snvestments are all now the responsibility of Area Meetin8 Trustees. with advice from
consultants, Investing Ethically.
Property
Trustees have overall responslblllty for en5urlng that qulnquennlal survèys of thè propèrtlÈs are carrled out and that thè
practlce of Local Meetings mèet5 the standard5 of health and safety policies.
Malor repairs to all buildings are the responsSbllity of Area Meetlng Trustees throu8h the Area Meetln8 Propertv
Commlttee. Local Meetlngs remaln responslble for day-to-day malntenancè.
Tru5tee5 have sècured agreement wlth York Housing Association that the property at 14 Friargate wlll be used for soc5al
housing only,. if York Housing A5soc5ation no longer wish to use the premlses for social housin81 the Housin8 Association
must offer to surrender the lease to York Area Quaker Meetln8.
