Structure, Governance and Management

The Joy Foundation is a company limited by guarantee, incorporated on 14 April 2009, with Articles of Association dated 6 April 2009 based on the Charity Commission model articles for charitable companies under the Companies Act 2006. It is also a registered charity and is registered for Gift Aid with HMRC.

Current trustees represent supporting churches as noted above. The trustees meet quarterly for regular meetings and those meetings are attended by the Project Manager and Administrator. Extra meetings of trustees or sub-groups of trustees are arranged as required. An Annual General Meeting is held each Autumn at which trustees are re-elected as required. New trustees are recruited, usually from supporting churches, and appointed by the trustees during the year if appropriate. New trustees are given an explanation of their responsibilities and role.

Day to day management is carried out by the Project Manager, who meets regularly with other staff and the volunteer team for supervision and training. Pastoral support for the Project Manager is provided by Alan Hoare and Nick Buck.

Financial Review

The Charity is supported financially by a combination of payments received as below

• Regular plus occasional “ad hoc” payments received from individual donors

• Regular plus occasional “ad hoc” payments received from supporting Churches

• Fundraising activities such as card selling, craft afternoon, cricket match, badge selling and quizzes

• Grant funds received from other Charities, Companies or Churches

• Contract work by the Project Manager taking lessons in local schools

• Gift Aid tax relief in respect of regular payments received from personal donors

The year end Accounts show no fund is materially in deficit. The majority of the Charity’s money is held as working capital in a standard Charity bank account in order to meet ongoing running costs of which the major factor is salary and associated “on costs” of tax and National Insurance contributions. Apart from the working capital, a separate fund is also held in a Reserve account intended to meet the Charity’s calculation as to its ongoing potential liability to meet redundancy costs for its employees should the Charity cease to operate. At the year end, the Charity bank account stood at £8936.60 in credit and the Reserve account stood at £26,009.90 in credit. During the year ended 30/4/2020, the Charity returned a profit of £483.68 resulting in a balance sheet standing at £36,729.00 at the year end. No funds are held as custodian trustee on behalf of others.

Public Benefit Statement

The Trustees consider that they have complied with their duty to have due regard to the guidance on public benefit published by the Charity Commission in exercising their powers or duties.

Objectives and Activities

The Objects as stated in the Articles are as follows:

"To act as a resource for young people up to the age of 18 living in Lincolnshire (the area of benefit) by providing advice and assistance and organising programmes of physical, educational and other activities as a means of:

a) advancing in life and helping young people by developing their skills, capacities and capabilities to enable them to participate in society as independent, mature and responsible individuals;

b) advancing education;

c) advancing the Christian religion;

d) providing recreational and leisure time activity in the interests of social welfare for people living in the area of benefit who have need by reason of their youth, age, infirmity or disability, poverty or social and economic circumstances with a view to improving the conditions of life of such persons."

In order to further those objects, The Joy Foundation works in schools in and around the Lincoln area, leading collective worship, running clubs and teaching lessons. The Joy Foundation also leads children’s workshops, gives staff training and has representatives serving on school governing bodies.

Achievements and Performance

The Joy Foundation has continued to support local children in a variety of ways in schools. These are the schools where The Joy Foundation has been active over the year:

Project Manager’s Report 2020

The Joy Foundation has had another encouraging year, working in 24 different schools. All of these schools have wanted The Joy Foundation to deliver Collective Worship as this supports spiritual, cultural and moral development. Schools have also recognised the expertise that TJF staff bring into school and recognise that this experience is adding much value to the life of their schools. Collective Worship has remained at the core of the work of TJF with also school staff training on this and the project of supporting clergy in Christianity Deanery with Collective Worship being delivered. TJF is now widely recognised as the experts in this area amongst primary schools in the Lincoln area.

It has also been a great privilege to work more closely with some schools, supporting groups and individuals in the areas of Physical Education, Religious Education, values development and intervention. These lessons, sessions and clubs have taken

place on a weekly basis throughout the year in 4 different schools. Also the volunteer BibleLincs team has been active, as well as other voluntary intervention support.

The Joy Foundation has also continued to enjoy the support of many local churches as they understand the importance of having a regular Christian presence in local schools.

The end of this year has also seen the beginnings of the Covid-19 pandemic and this has had a significant effect on local schools and the work of The Joy Foundation. With there being no access physically into schools, The Joy Foundation has adapted in order to continue to supply a Christian voice to children. This has been done through the provision of regular video messages. The initial response to this has been fantastic, with schools expressing great appreciation and gratitude. The quality and appropriateness of these messages have also been remarked upon. This feedback has encouraged The Joy Foundation as we now face uncertain times ahead.

Chairman’s remarks 2020

The majority of the year 2019-20 was ‘business as usual’ for the Joy Foundation. Collective worship was lead, mentoring was conducted, clubs were run, Bible Lincs took the message of the bible to schools.

The Christianity Deanery Collective Worship project, funded by the Diocese of Lincoln, offered one-to-one mentoring to clergy who requested it and a number of training sessions relevant to clergy conducting collective worship in their parish schools. This project has now come to its natural end.

Behind the scenes the trustees gave attention to the financial security of the charity, accepting the offer of a volunteer’s services to undertake fundraising research on our behalf and ensuring we fulfilled our obligations in regard to employee pensions and the correct reserves for redundancy provision.

The last two months of the reporting year however saw the country plunged into ‘lockdown’ and schools closed to all visitors. Trustees took the hard decision in April to furlough our school’s worker in order to preserve financial resources and draw on the governments support scheme. The Foundation swiftly adapted and offered schools and churches three pre-recorded collective worship videos each week till the end of the summer term. These have been hugely appreciated and are a sign of the readiness of the Foundation to respond to changing circumstances.

I am grateful to the trustees for their hard work, particularly in relation to the challenges of the last months and rejoice that we have such a committed and versatile staff team who ensure that the ministry of the Joy Foundation develops and flourishes.
