Trustees’ Annual Report for the period: From 07/04/2022 To 06/04/2023

Charity Name: BeatLife

Charity Registration Number: 1133273

Address:

WINDSOR CP SCHOOL UPPER HILL STREET LIVERPOOL L8 8JE

Trustees during reporting period:

Alice Küchemann Donna Palmer Alexander Phillips Kathleen Phillips Matthew Phillips

## Governance

BeatLife is governed by the board of trustees. Trustees are recruited as volunteers from the membership of the family band and appointed each year at the annual general meeting (AGM). Members of the family band are invited to the AGM and volunteers for trustees are sought in advance of the AGM. The board meets regularly throughout the year to manage the running of the charity.

## BeatLife’s activities in the reporting period

BeatLife’s aims and objectives, as outlined in the charity’s constitution, are:

“To advance the education of the public in dance, music and carnival arts by such means as the Trustees may from time to time determine, in particular but not exclusively through educational programmes, publications, group tuition, rehearsal workshops and performances in dance, music and carnival arts.”

The charity continued to fulfil these aims and objectives by providing regular drumming and music classes in schools, performances at public events and weekly rehearsals with the family band.

The BeatLife family band, which meets on Monday evenings, is an intergenerational group, comprising of members of all ages and including parents and children. The band aims to cultivate confidence, boost self-esteem and foster team-building skills by creating a

supportive, inclusive environment for personal growth. The group is non-religious and nonpolitical and welcomes individuals from across the community. The activities in the group help to maintain good mental health for our members, and performances in the local community, most prominently at the monthly Granby community market, aim to lift community spirit and transform perceptions of an area which is undergoing a period of regeneration.

Practitioners have continued to provide tuition to groups in schools and nurseries in the local area, as well as providing after-school groups and facilitating performances with the groups within the schools. School groups were also invited to perform with the family band at the Granby community market.

Some of the younger members of the family band have started to engage in band leader roles, including developing their own original songs. The BeatLife family band joined Anfield Samba Kids and children from a number of primary school groups with Movema to perform at the Africa Oyé music festival. The family band was also invited to perform at two events at Liverpool John Moores University, one at the opening of the Final year art degree show and another at a fresher’s week event.

Workshops and tuition are provided to schools “at cost”, and membership contributions from family band members remain voluntary, with suggested donations of £4 for adults and £2 for children per session. This has ensured that the public benefit of the charity is maintained, and family drumming sessions remain accessible. Monthly performances at Granby community market, a regular local community event, give young composers and performers opportunity to perform and showcase talent on a regular basis which helps increase confidence in their craft, (composition and performance). This gives them experience of leading a music ensemble which can lead to greater opportunities and further studies and provides quality, free entertainment to the local community, which in turn instils pride and self-worth within the community.

The trustees have regarded the commission’s public benefit guidance where applicable, including when deciding on the appropriateness of activities conducted and membership donations.

## Financial Review

The charity remained self-sustaining, covering all outgoings without external funding grants. The charity does not hold any debt, and funding came from a number of sources including: voluntary contributions from members; payments from schools for providing workshops and tuition; and payments for some performances. No assets are held other than instruments and associated equipment.

A full independent examiner’s report is also provided to the charity commission.
