- Structure and network • Save the Orangutan has a close collaboration with Save the Orangutan Foundation in Denmark and Save the Orangutan in Sweden. 

- • The collaboration agreement between Save the Orangutan and Save the Orangutan Foundation, Denmark was in 2021 reviewed, reconfirmed and signed by the trustees of both organisations. 

- • The daily administration and operation of Save the Orangutan is managed by the secretariat of Save the Orangutan Foundation based in Denmark to maximise impact and reduce costs. 

## Relationship 

- Save the Orangutan promotes and supports the work of Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation (BOSF) in Indonesia and coordinates its activities with BOS partners in several countries.

The Trustees have used the commission's public benefit guidance to guide its planning of activities in accordance with the purpose and objectives of Save the Orangutan. Main activities in the reporting period: Provided different opportunities for the general public to support the conservation efforts of Save the Orangutan and its local partner. • Offered symbolic adoptions of orphaned orangutans at the rehabilitation centre Nyaru Menteng in Central Kalimantan and provided donors with regular updates and highlights. • Provided opportunities to restore destroyed peat swam forest areas in Mawas in Central Kalimantan through our #plant_1_2_trees campaign for one-off donations, and SOS Borneo partner for recurring donations to the efforts conserving, replanting and restoring the rainforest and protect the wild orangutan populations. • Offered Orangutan Partner subscriptions as a way to support Save the Orangutan's work to save the orangutan and its habitat - the rainforest in Borneo in general. Raised awareness of the plight of the Bornean orangutan through articles on website, various posts on social media and different publications including a Save the Orangutan Group Annual Report. Provided updates of COVID-19 prevention and mitigation activities to protect the orangutans and local communities in our work areas in Borneo. Cooperated with other Save the Orangutan organisations maximizing the

impact of the activities of the Charity on the conservation of the Bornean orangutan and its habitat.

## Section D                      Achievements and performance 

The income of Save the Orangutan in 2021 was a total of GBP 100,096. **Summary of the main** GBP 23,984 was raised through our recurring donor programs and one- **achievements of the charity** off donation appeals. Save the Orangutan was beneficiary to a heritage **during the year** of GBP 76,112.20. 

In 2021 GBP 40.000 were transferred to the Central Kalimantan Rehabilitation and Reintroduction program at Nyaru Menteng for orangutan rescues, rehabilitation, sanctuaries and releases. The funds contributed to saving 15 orangutans from human-orangutan conflicts and reintroducing 25 orangutans to the wild after a successful rehabilitation. 29 orangutans were pre-released to safe islands to complete the last phase of their rehabilitation. Amongst these were several of the orangutans in our adoption program. 3 unreleasable orangutans needing lifelong care were released to their own sanctuary island. In 2021, Save the Orangutan Group replanted together with our local partner BOS Foundation more than 77 hectares with new forest in Mawas in Central Kalimantan. New trees were prepared to replant an area twice as large, but the last replanting was postponed to 2022, as the Mawas-area was exposed to massive floodings in late 2021. GBP 3.685 were used for awareness raising and engagement activities of the plight of the orangutan among the UK general public In 2021, 28 articles were published on www.savetheorangutan.org regarding projects, results obtained by the joint efforts of Save the Orangutan Group and local partners, the situation in Borneo and for the critically endangered orangutan, as well as other relevant topics. 14 articles relating to the reintroduction program, 3 articles on rainforest protection and eco-restoration, 1 on community development, 3 articles on orangutan ecology, 3 articles on the biodiversity and climate crises and their relation to the plight of the orangutan, and 3 on COVID-19 and its impact on our program activities in Indonesia. Save the Orangutan had 31.082 unique visitors on the .org and .org.uk sites. Information was also communicated through newsletters (subscribers: 828. Average open rate: 47.2%) and on social media. Facebook post reach top organic: 127.941, top paid: 24.525. 138 posts published on Facebook during 2021. 1.314 new followers on Facebook, raising the total number of followers to 10.531 by 31 December 2021.

Section D                      Achievements and performance The number of followers on Save the Orangutan Instagram account decreased slightly to 13.803 from 13.848 followers by end of 2021. In 2021, we invited our supporters and followers to an online event on International Orangutan Day in collaboration with our European partnerorganizations. Supporters and followers all over Europe could, among other things, watch our feature about the effects of COVID-19 on the rehabilitation centre Nyaru Menteng. 

Working together with our international partners, we also arranged an online screening of the documentary ’Eyes of the Orangutan,’ regarding the horrendous conditions for orangutans in the tourist industry.

In 2021, GBP 14,473 was raised from private donations through the orangutan adoption program and the SOS Borneo Program of Save the Orangutan, corresponding to 60 % of raised funds, and GBP 9,103 from one-off donations for special appeals corresponding to 38 % of raised funds. GBP 408 corresponding to 2% of the funds were from companies. In 2021, Save the Orangutan was bequeathed GBP 76,112 in heritage.

## **1 Principal accounting policies** 

- **a. Basis of preparation** 

The financial statements are prepared under the historical cost convention and in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard for Smaller Entities (Revised 2005). In preparing the financial statements the charity follows best practice as laid down in the Statement of Recommended Practice "Accounting and Reporting by Charities (SORP 2000, Revised 2005). 

## **b. Incoming resources** 

All incoming resources are recognised once the charity has entitlement to the resources, it is certain that the resources will be received and the monetary value of the incoming resources can be measured with sufficient reliability. 

- **c. Funding income** 

Investment income is accounted for in the period in which the charity is entitled to receipt. 

## **d. Donations** 

Donations and gifts are accounted for when receivable. 

## **e. Resources expended** 

Expenditure is included on the accruals basis: 

Fund raising costs are those attributable to raising income for the charity. Governance costs comprise costs for the running of the charity itself as an organisation. 

- **f. Governance costs** 

Governance costs include all costs involving the public accountability of the charity and its compliance with regulation and good practice. These costs include costs related to independent examination of the charities financial statements together with an apportionment of overhead and support costs. 

## **g. Fund structure** 

Unrestricted funds are donations and other incoming resources receivable or generated for the objects of the charity without further specified purpose and are available as general funds. 

Restricted funds are to be used for the specific purposes as laid down by the donor. Expenditure which meets these criteria is charged to the fund, together with a fair allocation of management and support costs.
