## VICAR’S REPORT

## **Beiee**

I do hope that as you read this Annual Review and think about your relationship with HT, you hedorefee. Thal tthaist ceyourtainlybelonmyg **B** desire. I want us to be a church where everyone matters; where everyone has something to contribute. I recognise that we come from a range of backgrounds - socially and spiritually, and because of this we have an opportunity to create a wonderfully rich mix of would-be Jesus followers.

## **BegiigÏ**

You will have noticed by now that teaching and preaching are really important to me. I happen to believe that the Bible is a life-transformative book and that God speaks to us through it! Not that we all have to believe the same thing! But I do want to reaffirm my commitment to encourage AND challenge you Sunday-by-Sunday as we travel this road together.

I cannot believe that well over a year has passed since Andrea and I joined the HT family. Thank you so much for your warm welcome and your willingness to embrace change and new ideas over these months.

**B**

Without doubt, our journey together is well underway. In some respects, a lot more changes have happened than I could possibly have expected, but I have noticed a real hunger in you to embrace the new thing that God is doing. **B**

## **Bec e**

So as you read, compare where you were this time last year with where you are now. And then consider where God might be calling you /us in the year ahead as we all journey together.

**B**

He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion. Philippians 1: 6

## CHURCHWARDENS’ REPORT

A new season for Holy Trinity started when Andy was Licensed in March 2023. Holy Week began less than two weeks later, and with a lot to organise, Andy led the Easter Services, signalling a significant change since the vacancy.

Thanks to the hard work of many, the new service pattern has allowed more people the opportunity to worship in their preferred way. Both services have grown over the past six months, and many have given their time and gifts to achieve this progress. We have seen new faces join us over the months, and the recent “newcomers” meeting at the vicarage allowed Andy and Andrea to welcome and ask those present to be part of the work we have planned for the future of Holy Trinity.

Since then, the planning, change, and growth have continued. From Easter to the school holidays, the emphasis was on understanding and listening, with a new set of meetings organised to manage life at Holy Trinity. A new pattern for Churchwarden, Standing Committee, and PCC meetings soon helped everyone fit into a successful flow.

The summer saw a change of pace, and when we returned in the autumn, we implemented our most significant change, moving to two services on Sundays.

As we write this during Holy Week, reflecting on the past twelve months is a good is thing to do. We have achieved more than many would have hoped for during this time, and the work is already starting to bring about the next season at Holy Trinity. A huge thank you to everyone for all you contribute at HT and for the support you have given to the Churchwardens this year. A special mention to Anne, Cate and the rest of the staff team for all their hard work.

Jocelyn & Graham

## CHRISTMAS & EASTER

HT was a great place to be at Christmas with really good numbers attending the Carol Service, Midweek Carols, the Christmas Eve Christingle Service, the Christmas Communion and the Christmas Morning Service. Chris Dalladay put together a great choir for the Carol Service and it would seem that many came back to that service for the first time since the pandemic.

Easter was also lively, but we found space to be reflective over a lamb supper on Maundy Thursday evening and through spending an hour at the cross on Good Friday. On Easter Sunday we celebrated the resurrection at 7am and at 10am with Dean’s baptism and a full church.

## MISSION & EVANGELISM

## **Alpha**

We have run the Alpha course in both the Autumn and Spring terms this past year, with about twelve guests at each. This has been a great opportunity to share the gospel and for people to ask their questions about the Christian faith, within a relaxed and safe environment.

A good number of people have moved on from Alpha to a small group and some have joined the wider church family at Sunday morning services. Thanks to everyone who has prepared and served food, washed up and prayed for us. We have valued the sense of whole church family involvement.

We will be running Alpha in the autumn - once again on a midweek evening.

## **Welcome Team**

Our welcome team consists of a dedicated group of fantastic volunteers who are keen to welcome newcomers to HT and help them feel part of church family life.

Andy and Andrea hosted the first ‘Newcomers’ Tea’ at the Vicarage which 25 people, new to the church, attended and where much cake was eaten and tea was drunk! The plan is to hold these gatherings regularly to help newcomers feel welcome and give them an opportunity to learn more about HT.

We have also developed a new Welcome Pack full of information about what HT offers and how people can get involved in our church family life. The pack is offered to newcomers and it will be further developed in the year ahead.

## MISSION & EVANGELISM

## **AeÏbìÇ C ìiÜ G ÏÄe Ch iÇ**

The Gospel choir is open to all, and sings a selection of Gospel songs alongside some secular choices focussing on Gospel themes of hope, freedom, and love. This year has been an exciting one with numbers going up, with around 1820 regulars currently.

As always, we would love to see more members - no ability to read music is required, as all songs are learnt by ear. We sang at a Christmas concert at Berryfields, had a concert at HT in July and sang at the HT Community Christmas Carol Service. The choir is really gelling as a group now. We have had a couple of socials where people can chat for longer and feel the benefit of belonging to the group.

**HT FC** HTFC has continued this year although moving venue to play indoors at the Grange School on Monday nights 7-8pm. We have a wide range of ages and abilities - with a mixture of church members and friends and even a couple of pupils from the school! We’re hoping to have a few social events so that we can build relationships and get to know each other better. If you are interested in joining us, please contact Peter Bisley - we’d love more HT men to join!

## **G ba MiÏÏi **

Mission partners Paul & Sarah Tester and The ‘Reeds‘ visited HT to give updates on their ministry in Peru and southern Europe respectively and we continue to support Pauline Linton in the DRC. Recently, Andrew Henderson visited Sierra Lone with a team from SOMA and returned with some fantastic stories. Closer to home, we continue to support groups in Aylesbury including the Town Chaplaincy, Youth for Christ, the Foodbank and AHAG. A new Giving Committee is currently being formed to continue this ministry.

## COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

HT engages with the wider community of Aylesbury in other ways too. In August we were represented at the **Bìc~Ï C ìÜ Sh ** , providing coffee for over 1000 weary attendees. Also in August we made and served over 2000 cups of tea (there’s a theme developing here) for **ChìÇch i Ühe PaÇ~** that took place in our parish. In December we participated in ’ **ChÇiÏÜaÏ Ühe C bbeÏ** ’ in town; dressing up as nativity characters and taking part in the parade, introducing the real message of Christmas into the festivities.

We continue to host and support the fantastic **AeÏbìÇ T ChaÄaic** . There are chaplains in the park, in Morrisons and in the town - including a number of Street Angels.

Our support for the much-needed **AeÏbìÇ F dba~** has grown and we have a representative on their Board of Trustees as well. We host ‘ **SÄace’** on a Monday which provides a listening ear and counselling for those who need it. We are also home for **AeÏbìÇ Vae Y ìÜh f Ç ChÇiÏÜ** and **UiÜe** , and are delighted to have been able to host ‘ **Wh I Beiee** ’ this year. Once a month, people from across the town have come to HT to hear testimony and teaching from a range of well-known speakers explaining why they believe in God.

At the **TìÇfìÇ g Jìi Ç Sch CaÇ SeÇice** we were packed to the rafters as usual and this year we have also hosted Deanery Synod and Chapter Meetings, cooked numerous breakfasts for the Evangelical Anglicans in Aylesbury (EAA) and hosted the Aylesbury Church Network (ACN) at lunchtimes.

Not forgetting our most consistent interaction with the wider community - the Coffee Shop.

## CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE

## **HTA KidÏ**

## **G Y ìÜh Café, PaÜhfideÇÏ & Chi**

HTA Kids is for children aged 3-11 years and includes a mix of games, prayer, worship, crafts and Bible teaching. We meet from 11am on Sundays during the service.

Young people have the opportunity to engage with HT most weeks. Three out of four Sundays, Matt & Claire Norman lead Pathfinders from 11am - 12 noon with able assistance from a small group of volunteers. Amongst other things they have been learning about prayer this year and recently had a very successful social evening out bowling.

Last year we learnt about New Testament characters, Psalms and justice in our communities. We learnt memory verses, watched videos, painted, baked, completed quizzes, played games, had treasure hunts, parties, and worshipped together!

Once a month, Millie Tomson and her team lead Chill in the lounge; offering a safe space for our young people to come, chat and ask questions about faith.

It is wonderful to see the children growing in faith and friendships, inviting friends along, and enjoying time together while learning about Jesus. The wide age range of HTA Kids continues to have benefits and challenges.

Also, once a month on a Friday evening, Mandy, Ed and Anne run Glo Youth Café with social activities, crafts and sports for our young people and their friends. Each month has a different focus and the tuck shop is always a hit. Recently, Andy and Andrea paid a visit for a session of some very searching questions.

Our dedicated volunteer team includes leaders and helpers, with assistance from the office staff, Safeguarding lead and PCC reps. This year, we thanked Jane Piper, Claire Norman and Peter Bisley who stood down from leading & helping, and welcomed new members to the team. We are grateful to those who give their time and energy so faithfully to support this ministry.

HT remains committed to travelling with young people as they negotiate their teenage years. Many of you reading this will be able to call to mind adults that were there for you when you were growing up. Could you maybe spare an hour or two a month to invest in this generation?

## CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE

## **LighÜh ìÏe**

## **Sch Ï’ W Ç~**

On behalf of HT, Ruth Jarrett goes into Turnfurlong Infant and Junior Schools six times a year to take Christian assemblies, including at Christmas and Easter. Each assembly reaches approximately 540 children across both schools. Ruth also takes some assemblies at Broughton Infant School. In December, we ran workshops for year 3 at Turnfurlong Juniors exploring the real meaning of Christmas and Turnfurlong Juniors came to HT for their school carol service. In July, we ran transition workshops for year 6 at Turnfurlong Juniors which helped them to explore moving up to secondary school. During the session each child was given an “It’s Your Move” book (Scripture Union) which is packed full of helpful advice about moving up to secondary school. Please pray that the schools continue to welcome us in to run these activities.

Our vision is to provide welcome, friendship and care for 0-5’s and their carers. Interactive sessions (which include singing, story, craft, refreshments, and free play) offer the opportunity to have fun and learn about Jesus. We meet weekly during term time in Walton Hall.

Lighthouse would not happen without our committed, servant hearted team of volunteers. This year, we thanked Jemimah, Val, Margaret, Hester and Charley who all stood down and Joc who changed roles, and welcomed several new volunteers to the team. In November, we celebrated the installation of the stained-glass window, recognising all children’s ministry at HT. Particular thanks to Cate for her support in this project. Everyone saw the window at our funfilled Christmas Crib Service which included a fantastic story by Andy and Veronica, followed by a picnic lunch.

Several team members attended the National Playtime Conference in September. We were reminded that beneath the surface of our noisy and lively sessions there is hidden treasure. Children learn how to interact with each other, gain resilience, develop fine motor and social skills, and more, all while learning about the love of Jesus.

## **PÇaeÇ MiiÏÜÇ**

Prayer Ministry was ‘re-launched’ this year with some training back in the spring. The focus is on a person-centred approach, where those coming for prayer are also encouraged to pray for themselves, as well as receive prayer.

Some logistical issues remain, but we continue to offer prayer on the right-hand side of the main body of the church. Andy has been keen to emphasise that Prayer Ministry is not so much ‘what does God want to do now’ but rather what has God already been doing through the service and how can our prayers help continue to further that.

We remain keen to see Prayer Ministry become an everyday part of HT’s worshipping life. Thank you to all who give of themselves in praying for others in this way.

## PRAYER

## **M Üh PÇaeÇ MeeÜigÏ**

Prayer meetings have continued on the first Thursday of the month 7-8pm throughout the year.

Ian and Carol Waterfield lead the charge on this and have been encouraged by the regular attendance of a faithful few.

In addition, Rob & Graziella Clarke have opened up their home on the other Thursday evenings for prayer, and one or two have joined them for this.

Nothing is achieved without prayer. These meetings are open to everyone who would like to join.

## SMALL GROUPS

Our small group ministry continues to offer the church family an opportunity for a deeper sense of belonging and to connect with others walking the journey of faith. The past year has seen some changes in small group leadership and growth in the number of groups available to join. The group descriptions and photos of the leaders have been updated and are now in the church foyer. There you can see the variety of groups on offer and we are hopeful that we will continue to see groups multiplying as the church family continues to grow.

Our small groups meet both during the daytime and evening: Tuesdays to Fridays.

If your desire is to become more involved as an HT member in the year ahead then why not consider joining a small group? You can speak to Millie Tomson for more information.

A huge thank you to all of the leaders for serving our church family in this important pastoral ministry and for supporting others on their discipleship journey.

## PCC, DEANERY SYNOD & ELECTORAL ROLL

Mike Fulker, Chris Dalladay and Andy represent HT on the **Deanery Synod,** with Graham Strachan as Lay Chair. Synod meets three times a year to consider topics affecting all the churches in the deanery. We also have special presentations from organisations connected to the work of the church. Most recently, Synod considered the parish share within the deanery, and had a presentation from Compassion UK on child sponsorship. Anyone who would like to know more about the work of Synod, please speak to the members listed above.

Our **Electoral Roll** number is 129 people, compared to 136 at the APCM last May. Every sixth year a new Electoral Roll is prepared. We will be doing this in 2025.

If you are not currently on the Electoral Roll, do think about joining. You are eligible to join if you live in the parish or if you have been attending habitually for at least six months, and it is a way of showing that you belong to the church.

The **PCC** was made up of the following: Shani Bragg, Nicki Strachan, Penny Hurst, Andrew Henderson, Bruce Cullen, Matt Tomson, Mandy Henderson and Nigel Coote. In addition we have our three Deanery Synod members and finally we have the following ex-officio members: Andy Johnson (Vicar), Graham Strachan (warden), Jocelyn Chappell (warden).

Over the course of the year the following have stood down: David Robinson, Ian Webb and Jane Piper and Andrew is stepping down at the APCM. We thank them for their service to Holy Trinity and their contributions to the PCC.

There are 6 meetings a year plus a social gathering in December. At every meeting we always discuss: Finance, Safeguarding, Children’s and Youth work and Building related matters.

This year we have also tackled new Sunday services, staff restructuring and our ongoing Covid-19 response as well as some theological issues. In the year ahead the PCC will be focussed on developing a 5 year plan.

There are vacancies on the PCC, so if you are interested in joining us, please speak to Bruce (PCC Secretary) or Andy to find out more.

To keep up to date with what the PCC are currently discussing, contact Bruce to receive meeting minutes.

## FABRIC & BUILDINGS

Although the overall state of the fabric is good, we haven‘t spent very much money on it for the last ten years, so naturally one or two areas are in need of attention. There are also some large long-standing projects looming, that will require significant investment and fund raising, i.e. a new boiler, building insulation and interior decoration. The Diocese of Oxford‘s five-year mandatory buildings inspection is due next year so we will see what that raises.

In 2023 we spent around £10,000 on our buildings, not including on-going costs. However, this does include about £3,000 spent on the new Lighthouse stainedglass window, which was conceived and fundraised for back in 2015. Thanks to Operations Manager, Cate, for all her hard work driving the project to completion, and to Claudia Phipps for designing and making the window.

The budget of £4,000 for 2024, is very tight, but we will do our best to keep to that by focussing on essential maintenance and repairs, and various but necessary testing and checks.

Two projects are planned for which we’re applying to external funders for grants:

- the kitchenette in the crèche room upstairs, which has been unusable for some time, will be upgraded thanks to the kind donation of time and resources from Mark Knight.

- the foyer will be getting a refresh during the summer, to better serve the many community groups that enjoy the space and in readiness for extra days being added to the opening of the Coffee Shop, which is anticipated in the autumn.
