Berkswich Parish Hall
Trustees’ Annual Report for the year ended 31[st] December 2024
Charity registration number (if applicable): 1133076
Objectives and Activities
The trustees of the Berkswich Parish Hall are aware of the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit in The Advancement of Religion for the Public Benefit and have had regard to it in their administration of the Charity. The trustees believe that, by promoting the work of the Berkswich Parish Hall, a benefit to the public is provided by:
-
Providing facilities for Parish events and meetings, including Social Events, children’s workshops and Fund-Raisers.
-
Providing facilities for use as a community resource, allowing groups as diverse as Guides, Demi-dance, Yoga, Weight Watchers and many others to gather and meet in the Baswich area.
Achievements and Performance
Following the pandemic, Berkswich Parish Hall re-established itself as a valuable resource for community groups, parish events and other activities, and we have to be thankful for a very dedicated group of volunteers who help keep it to the high standard it holds. Room bookings, remain high, and the hall is in regular use for a wide variety of local community groups, exercise classes, and children’s activities. This does put pressure on the hall in terms of keeping it clean and tidy between hirers, and we are grateful to our cleaners, volunteers, and hirers who do such a good job of ensuring it is kept in the best possible state for anyone wishing to use it.
The hall’s day to day management is provided by a volunteer Management Committee consisting of the Trustees and other co-opted members. Thankfully, our new flooring issues were rectified this year, and we can continue to enjoy the improved look of the space.
Financial Review
The Statement of Financial Activities shows a profit of £6,431.47 for the year to 31[st] December 2024. The accounts include income and expenditure relating specifically to the replacement of the Hall flooring and other smaller projects.
We continue our efforts to reduce running costs wherever possible and many every day maintenance jobs are carried out by our team of volunteers at no, or very little cost to the Hall.
Reserves Policy
It is our policy that 1 month’s income is held as reserve. In addition we invest our short term investment fund balances with the CCLA Church of England Deposit Fund.

Safeguarding
The Trustees believe they have fulfilled their duty under section 5 of the Safeguarding and Clergy Discipline Measure 2016 (duty to have due regard to House of Bishops’ guidance on safeguarding children and vulnerable adults).
Volunteers
The trustees of Berkswich Parish Hall would like to thank all the volunteers who work so hard to make the hall a lively and vibrant community. Special thanks go to Dave Hatton, Mark Garside, Rosie Broom and Beryl Foster who work so diligently week, week out, to make the hall a welcoming community hub.
Future Plans
As with all building projects, there have been the inevitable issues with the new flooring. This is under investigation by the flooring contractors, and a solution will hopefully be identified shortly.
Risk Management
While hall letting has maintained at a high rate, the current wider economic climate is still fragile, and may have an impact on hall letting and therefore income. We do, however, receive a greater number of letting queries than we have space to fulfil, so are confident that any cancellations will quickly be replaced.
Like any building of its age, the hall needs maintenance which may reveal hidden issues needing to be resolved.
Structure, Governance and Management
Day to day running of the hall is undertaken by a paid Parish Office Administrator, with services offered by a Cleaner and Gardener, and a large team of volunteers. A Community Hall Management Committee meet to review expenditure and income; discuss maintenance work and approve any significant expenditure. During 2024, this committee was chaired by the Revd Graham Adamson
