HANDinHAND ETHIOPIA . ANNUAL REPORT MARCH 2024
The year to March 2024 h&8 been another successful year for HandinHand Ethiopia. The number
of childrcn on the sponsorship schcmc is around 245.
Financially, HandinHand Ethiopia rcmains in a strong position. Total inconie for the ycar
amounted to £42.8?4.09 with total expenditure of £54,9?6.50 giving a planned deficit for the year
of £12,102.41. Total funds at the end of the financial year amounted to £20,996.75.
With the Ethiopian government now providing free education for all children, and then introducing
free school meals for kindergarten and primary school children, the Project has decided tha( every
Lhild/¥uard ianlfamily will gct a food supply every month. The sponsorcd childr¢n will continue
to receive the full benefit of the monthly £12.50 sponsorship. Any fund5 left over from changes
to the food support will be spent on each child and towards pwchasing underwear, clothes and
sho¢s. In early 2024 a paymcnt uf £5,500.00 was madc fur thc purLhase of slioes for illl cliildren
on the project.
Thc TNsieeb plan gradu4111y to wind down the H1￿dinHand project over the next four y¢ars to
2028. The abovc-mentioned chwigcs within Ethiopia itself mean that the charity's original aims
to provide food and an education for children affected by HIV/Aids - are now being fulfilled.
In addilional, thc Projcct itsclf was ncvcr mcdnt to bc opcn-cndcd - its aim was dlways to support
thc EthiOpik￿s in that Part of Addis to bccomc sclf-sufficicnt. In total, the Project will have
worked in Addis for 20 years by the time 2028 is reached.
As a consequence, no new children will bc taken on for sponsorship, but all currcnt children will
be catered for until they finish their education andlor tind employment. It is anticipated that
sponsors in th¢ UK will continu¢ supporting thcir individual children until they ¢ith¢r fmish
school or start work. Plans arc in place to .gupport the staff working on the Project &$ they leave
to find new opportunities.
There has not been a visit to Addis Ababa by sponsors since October 2018, rnainly duc to covid
and increased security conccrns, but rc&Jular contacl is mainlaincd with ihc local workcrs on the
project.
