AIMS AND PURPOSES

The Parochial Church Council (PCC) has the responsibility of cooperating with the Priest in Charge (Revd Mark Fraser) in promoting, in the ecclesiastical parish, the whole mission of the Church, pastoral, evangelistic, social and ecumenical. The church also has benefitted from a variety of clergy from across the Parishes.

The PCC is specifically responsible for the maintenance of the building of the Church of the Holy Rood, Village Street, Edwalton and the Church Hall, Village Green, Edwalton.

In the absence of Churchwardens, David Batte and Susan Russell are happy to report that the Church inventory and terrier are all in order.

Objectives

The mission of the Church of the Holy Rood is “A worshipping church, welcoming everyone into the Lord’s family, proclaiming the gospel and serving the community.”

The PCC is committed to enabling as many people as possible to worship at our church and to become part of the parish community

OVERVIEW

Throughout 2022, we have been discerning together our vision & values, celebrating how these things currently happen in the life of Holy Rood, and providing opportunities for the Church Congregation to discuss how we might do these things better. Holy Rood’s vision statement makes clear our aspiration to be:

“A worshipping Church, welcoming young and old into the Lord’s family, proclaiming the gospel and serving the community.”

As trustees of Holy Rood, the Parochial Church Council (PCC) met ?? times during 2022 and has (amongst other things) overseen the Church’s enabling of our vision and values to be more fully realised.

3

So, what have we done?

a) A worshipping Church

We are very grateful to the Ministry Team, who lead our services on Sundays and Wednesdays, along with occasional additional services throughout the year. This team includes Rev. Mark Fraser, Rev. Ade Perham, Rev. Joyce Saywell, Jacky Tivers (our Licensed Lay Minister), Adrian Kemp and Tom Judge. We are also very appreciative of all those people who contribute to our services. Thanks to Douglas Harvey and Susan Russell for playing the organ, to Janet who, after many years of playing, has now retired; to Paul and Stefan for manning the sound desk; to all our sidespeople, intercessors, readers and those who provide refreshments.

In September 2022, Holy Rood’s offering of services was expanded to include two additional monthly services: Evensong (3[rd] Sunday each month at 4pm) and an Informal Family Service (1[st] Sunday each month at 11:30am). Both are well attended (approximately 20 at each), with the 10am Traditional Service attracting an average attendance of 40 throughout the year.

Compared to the last couple of years, where Covid had a significant impact on people’s engagement with church services, it was heartening to see the church full at times this year (particularly around Easter and Christmas).

The Morning Prayer group has continued to meet on Wednesday mornings, attended by a faithful group of approximately 7 people. The Book Group (meeting bi-weekly on Thursday evenings) has also continued to meet, initially on Zoom but now meets in-person most of the time.

In recognition of the significance of the Church Garden for parishioners during the Covid pandemic, the Garden’s prayer walk booklet was updated and several services were held outside. These included the Holy Saturday morning service, the summer all-age service, and the Crib service. The positive atmosphere around them all in their own unique ways was lovely to experience. We are grateful for the faithful team who lovingly maintain the Garden week in and week out throughout the year.

During Advent, we also organised/hosted community carol services at three different locations around the parish (including in the Village) which engaged over 160 people in total.

4

A legacy from Covid is that we currently do not share a common cup during the distribution of Communion, preferring instead to intinct (dipping a wafer into the chalice of wine). We appreciate there are mixed opinions about this sensitive subject, and ask that you speak to a PCC member to share your views, which can then be discussed at a forthcoming PCC meeting.

b) Welcoming young and old into the Lord’s family

As you will see in Adrian’s comprehensive report, there are lots of encouraging things that happened (and are happening) that engage with younger people and families. Thank you so much to those of you who helped out in this vital ministry, giving wholeheartedly of your time, energy, imagination and warmth in sharing God’s welcome and love to those you met.

Encouragingly, we are growing as a Church. In 2022, over 40 adults and 6 under-16s joined us (or re-joined, following a long absence). We are hugely grateful for the warm welcome you give to people walking through our doors for the first time, particularly the sidespeople on Sundays and leaders of other weekday activities and events.

c) Proclaiming the gospel

During our ‘Cake and Chat’ events, one of the things that was unanimously agreed upon was that we felt unsure about what ‘proclaiming the gospel’ might look like. A couple of ideas in response to this cropped up, including arranging some teaching on the subject, and organising some community events that would include an element of engagement with the Christian faith.

In response to the latter, we hosted a Christingle service at the Church Hall in early December, which attracted about 75 people and included a short talk from Adrian. To our knowledge, many of those who attended do not currently attend a church regularly. At events such as the Christmas Tree Festival, Adrian also facilitated a few sessions that helped children and parents to engage with the Christmas story and its real meaning.

It has also been really encouraging to hear stories from places such as the Tuesday toddler group, where people coming along have felt able to have really deep and meaningful conversations with team members.

d) Serving the community

5

Speaking of Toddlers, the group is run by an active and committed team, who have done a fabulous job of providing a safe space for children and their ‘grown-ups’, whilst building relationships and being ‘good news’ to all who come. Whilst we’re grateful to the whole team for their continued efforts, particular thanks must go to Sue Bailey for all her hard work in coordinating the team and being generally awesome.

Other regular activities that served the community and provided vital places of welcome include Rood Gamers (bi-weekly on Tuesday afternoons) and Coffee Group (weekly on Thursday mornings). Both were well attended, steadily growing in popularity.

There were also several community-oriented events that were organised by the Church. These included:

Two community picnics that happened on the Edwalton Park and Edwalton Chase housing estates, in celebration of Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee. These attracted in excess of 150 people (of all ages).

The Harvest Celebration Weekend in September, which included some incredible contributions of flowers and scarecrows from local schools, care homes, other groups and individuals. It attracted over 200 people and particular thanks goes to Julia Jefferson for her efforts in making it happen.

The Christmas Tree Festival, which involved over 40 trees (provided and decorated by local community organisations), hundreds of visitors and many cakes & cuppas! Huge thanks to Helen Stephenson and Alex Whitaker, along with the many others who made this such a success. The funds raised for the Childrens Bereavement Service were a huge encouragement, too.

Another way that we continued to serve the community throughout the year was by taking several wedding and funeral services for members of the church and community. The death of Melvyn was a particular shock, which the church community continues to mourn.

The PCC, with the support of a few others, have been exploring various options of ways that we might practically serve the community. These have included:

6

Entering into discussions with the Council over purchasing a small piece of the golf course so that the graveyard can be extended, as there are very few burial plots remaining.

Appointing a Team to figure out what to do with the existing Church Hall and future development/alternative ways to bless and serve the community with the legacy that was given a few years ago. Incidentally, a Community Audit is currently being conducted as part of this process.

People

We are grateful to a wide range of people who have contributed to the life and flourishing of Holy Rood in 2022. However, every year has its ups and downs, and perhaps the greatest sadness was the loss of Melvyn Dougan, following illness that began earlier in the year. Melvyn’s faithful ministry, wisdom and compassionate care was greatly valued by everyone at Holy Rood and he has left a rich legacy in the lives of all who knew him.

Throughout 2022, alongside the Finance Team and Ministry Team, two other teams have become more fully established. These are the Communications Team and the Fabric Team. All four of these teams have particular remits, empowered by and accountable to the PCC, with each Team having a minimum of two PCC members on them, so that there are clear lines of communication, support and accountability between the teams and the Church’s trustees. These teams also ensure that no individual should have to be overly burdened with responsibilities, and makes it easier for newcomers to join these teams and ‘learn the ropes’ before committing to particular responsibilities.

Thank you to those involved in these teams, and of course the PCC, without which vital parts of the Church simply could not function. The PCC were very grateful for David Bailey’s service as Treasurer, before this responsibility was handed over to David Batte during early-2022, both of whom were ably supported by Helen Stephenson, Joanne Pilkington and the Finance Team, who helped us to maintain a clear understanding of our financial position and responsibilities.

Rev. Joyce Saywell has taken over as Safeguarding Officer and we had no safeguarding issues this year.

7

In 2023, we hope to establish a Pastoral Care team, as we are mindful that people can easily ‘fall through the gaps’. We are grateful to all of you who completed the updated GDPR contact details forms, as this has helped us to update our records and gives us a solid platform to start our Pastoral Care activities from.

This was our third successive year without any church wardens and this situation cannot continue indefinitely. We are in real need of church members being willing to stand to serve as wardens and a full complement of PCC members if we are to lead the church together into a future with hope and confidence. Whilst we face challenges, we also have many opportunities opening to us and we need to be willing to trust God, listen to his leading and risk some changes in order to live out our vision to be a “Worshipping Church, welcoming young and old into the Lord’s family, proclaiming the gospel and serving the community.”

FABRIC GROUP

The Fabric Committee was formally re-established following the 2022 APCM, and currently has the following members:

8

Ade Perham, Graham Beck, Julie Beesley and Neil Stephenson.

The team has spent a good proportion of time establishing a framework for the management of routine activities around the Church premises. This is to continue with the intention of allowing routine maintenance to be completed without the need for review by the PCC. Financial limits and scope have been agreed and allow for much of this activity to proceed with Fabric Committee oversight only. Our sincere thanks to Melvyn for his support and dedication in previous years and in helping the team get to grips with the operational processes associated with the team.

A proportion of the last year has seen the church without a caretaker, and we welcome Patrick as the new incumbent, and thank Paul for his service, and continued support as well.

A number of significant activities have occurred throughout the period, including:

Installation of a fire alarm system at the Church Hall; completed in September 2022. In addition, remedial works to fire doors and other activities including signage were also completed.

Risk assessments of the Church have been reviewed and continue to be updated.

A thorough assessment of the Church Bell Tower has been conducted by Taylors of Loughborough. The report is currently being considered and actions arising will be discussed in due course.

The paving at the Church door has been re-set so that the doors no longer catch.

Paving to the Church garden is planned to be widened to enhance accessibility for wheelchairs.

An ongoing assessment of the Church hall continues to determine what remedial works may be required to ensure the venue remains a useful facility for the Church and community. Some decorating work is due to be undertaken in the toilets.

We continue to consider future works in all the areas within the remit of the committee, specifically the Church itself, the Churchyard and the

9

Church Hall, according to the established schedule and also by priority for unplanned events.

We have a significant amount of work to oversee and maintain, and could benefit from additional volunteers to bolster the team.

Our thanks too, to those outside the team that have contributed to works, completed and ongoing.

Deanery Synod

DEANERY SYNOD PROCEEDINGS IN 2022

10

West Bingham Deanery is one of nine deaneries in the Diocese of Southwell & Nottingham. Its area covers churches in West Bridgford, Clifton, Wilford and villages to the south and west. Synod Meetings bring together clergy and lay representatives two or three times a year, to receive reports and discuss church issues. Meetings are often also open to members of parishes.

Mark Fraser was Area Dean throughout 2022 but stood down in January 2023 and has been succeeded by Revd Tim Fox (St Paul’s Wilford Hill). Katharine Dryden continued as Deanery Administrator and Andrew Little (St Paul’s, Wilford Hill) recently replaced Barry Dryden as Deanery Treasurer.

The Deanery Leadership Team each year sets the size of each parish’s Share, the amount of money that each parish is asked to pay towards the cost of running the Diocese including stipends, pensions and accommodation.

Holy Rood is entitled to two lay representatives but unfortunately we didn’t have any lay representation during 2022.

SYNOD MEETINGS IN 2022

: March at St Mary’s Clifton we prayed and encouraged one another. We talked about Clifton Parish’s work with young people.

June at St Wilfrid’s Wilford : Revd Liam O’Boyle spoke about Supporting Refugees in our diocese, and Jane Gray (St Peter’s Ruddington) on Supporting the Supporters. We agreed to plan Mission events to be held during September 2023.

October at St Paul’s Wilford Hill: Robert Cleave (the Diocesan Environment Officer) spoke about Caring for Creation with churches becoming Eco Parishes and appointing “eco

11

champions” to encourage parishioners to change their lifestyles. [Robert offered to visit PCC meetings in local parishes]. Revd James Halstead (Principal of the Diocese’s School of Discipleship) explained about the materials and resources available on the Learning Hub on the Diocese’s website.

RETIREMENTS AND APPOINTMENTS IN 2022

Revd Lee Proudlove of St Giles’ retired; no successor has yet been appointed.

The long-standing vacancy at Sutton Bonington & Normanton continues.

New curates started at East Leake ( Daniel Bauhahn ) and Lady Bay ( Kristine Mole ).

2023 ELECTIONS We may elect up to two lay representatives to Deanery Synod at its APCM on 27 April. Those elected will serve terms of three years ending on 30 June 2026.

Financial Review

FINANCIAL REVIEW FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31[st] DECEMBER 2022

General Income and Expenditure Account

The Unrestricted General Account for the year ended 31[st] December 2022 shows a loss before transfers from other reserves of £22,208. This compares with a loss of £24,149 in the preceding year.

Regular giving income increased by around 10% during 2022, and income from the hire of the Church Hall/Meeting Room was over 35% higher than last year.

Expenditure has been closely scrutinised by the PCC Finance Committee throughout the year. Our Parish Share, 6% higher than in 2021, was paid

12

in full. Salary costs increased by around 7%; we continued to pay our Children & Families Pioneer worker from the Parish Investment Fund, see below.

Leaving aside the income and expenditure associated with the Heritage Fund Cultural Grant (see below), our overall income and expenditure in 2022 were around 10% higher than in 2021.

In line with Church of England recommended practice, it is our policy to maintain as a reserve an amount equivalent to approximately three months unrestricted expenditure (eg around £25,000) for contingency purposes. During 2022, the PCC agreed to transfer £25,000 from our Designated Fund Accounts in order to maintain adequate cash reserves. At the end of the year the balance in our Unrestricted Accounts was £26,223.

Designated Fund Accounts and Investments

We have three ongoing Designated Fund Accounts:

During 2022, the investments within our Designated Fund Accounts decreased in value, reflecting the worldwide decrease in the value of investments due to global uncertainties; the capital value of our investments decreased by £130,000 (10%) during the year. We also transferred £25,000 to our Unrestricted General Account, spent around £37,000 on our Children & Families Pioneer and associated activities, and spent around £5000 on other items. This expenditure was offset by interest and dividend receipts amounting to £31,775 (2.7%). Hence the overall value of our Designated Fund Accounts decreased by £171,515 (12%) during the year.

13

At 31[st] December 2022 the values of our three ongoing Designated Fund Accounts were

Hall Renewal Fund - £755,166 Parish Investment Fund - £457,225

Church Fabric and Churchyard Maintenance Fund - £7,276

We received the original legacy from the estate of John Hill in 2015; this was used to establish our Parish Investment and Hall Renewal Funds. Since then the combined net value of these two Funds, after allowing for transfers and expenditure over the seven-year period, has increased by £212,366.

In 2021/22 we received from the Heritage Fund a Cultural Grant of £11,100. Most of the income and expenditure occurred during 2021, with only a residual amount (£1133) remaining in the accounts at the end of 2022.

Legacy Policy

In 2016 the PCC established a policy whereby, wherever possible, legacy gifts are used to help fund development projects, whether buildings, equipment or staff. We encourage people to leave gifts in their wills for the general purposes of the church rather than for a restricted purpose. We discuss the possible uses of such gifts with the executors, bearing in mind the areas of interest of the deceased and the priorities of the church at the time. The PCC makes a decision and the executors are informed regarding the use to which the money is being put.

No legacies were received during 2022.

Charitable Donations

During 2022, the Parish donated £500 to the Notts Clergy Widows and Dependents Fund. We also raised £676 for Sewa Foodbank, £600 for the Children’s Bereavement Centre, £600 for Macmillan Cancer Support, £70 for Nottingham Hospice, £45 for the Childrens’ Society and £110 for other causes.

David Batte (Treasurer)

Structure, governance and management

The method of appointment of PCC members is set out in the Church Representation Rules.

At the Church of the Holy Rood the membership of the PCC consists of the Priest in Charge, Churchwardens, Deanery Synod representatives and Laity Members elected by those members of the congregation who are on the electoral roll of the church.

The PCC members are responsible for making decisions on all matters of general concern and importance to the church parish including deciding on how the funds of the PCC are to be spent.

Children and Families Pioneer Report

Church programme

At Easter 2022 we launched our Sunday children’s discipleship group, Explorers. This is offered on the second and fourth Sundays. Attendance is erratic (often there are no children), and at other times a wide age range is a challenge, but we always have a very worthwhile time exploring God’s Word - usually through the Godly Play method - and building positive friendships with each other. It’s important for any young families who come to our church, or who are looking for a new church, to know there is provision for children. I am grateful for the help of Julia Tragheim and Val Lee.

In our monthly All-Age services we continue to try and engage children and adults alike in slightly more interactive and creative ways. For example, over the last twelve months we have used storytelling, drama,

15

object lessons, new songs, art, creative prayers and interactive responses to the message. I’ve been delighted to see how people have been open to responding in different ways. Our all-age service in the garden in August, and the rare visit of the Girlguiding units with lots of parents in November were two particular highlights for me. Through 2023 we are exploring God’s BIG story – looking at the grand narrative of the Bible from Creation to New Creation.

In October we commenced our new monthly 11.30 worship service with a vision for reaching new families and younger generations and building a vibrant new worshipping community. Ade and I share responsibility for this and we have been using these early sessions to experiment, learn and evolve. Typically we are getting around 16-18 people come, and we have seen at least ten different families connect with us, but not all at the same time. Our big challenge is to find ways for all ages and stages of faith to worship and engage with God together. We enjoy modern worship songs and child-friendly action songs, hearing and seeing a bible story then discussing it together, and then responding to what God is saying to us in creative ways. We are moving location to the church hall from May in order to be more accessible to people who don’t come to church. We have also commenced bi-monthly Saturday morning ‘Family, Faith, Fun’ events at Ade’s house – another way in for new families who don’t attend church. In recent weeks I have completed the Plant course with Ade, at the Centre for Church Multiplication in London. This has been an invaluable learning experience and has helped us sharpen our vision and strategies for the new worshipping community, which we have now decided to call the All-In service .

Outreach

We have been actively engaging with children and families through the year through many different events including a bible-based summer holiday club; a scarecrow trail and crafts for Harvest weekend; a football coaching kids holiday club in October (working with St Luke’s and St Giles’ churches and Ambassadors Football ); telling the Christmas story to children at the Christmas Tree Festival; February and May half term games and craft mornings and a Kids Sing Pop event. Family-oriented Christmas outreach events were very popular: We moved the Christingle service to the church hall and this was packed out with people who don’t

16

normally come to our church; the pop-up carol singing events on the new estates attracted about 100 people as did the Crib Service in the garden, where many children and some adults dressed up in costume and participated in the Nativity scene.

The public’s amazing response to our new Easter Story Trail events have exceeded my expectations, with around 130 people coming on Good Friday 2022 and 180 this Easter. A huge thanks to everyone who has helped me on any of these events.

I believe that Holy Rood is gaining an increasingly positive reputation through all of these community-focused events and I suspect we are becoming known as a church that does really good, family-friendly and creative things that people are finding surprising!

Aside from these outreach events I have been able to visit and work with the Boys Brigade and the Rainbows and Brownies; attend the ongoing ‘Know Your Church Know Your Community’ course; go on prayer walks around Edwalton; write content for families and children in our Edwalton Herald newsletter; and do regular work in our two local primary schools. I continue to support Sue and the Baby & Toddler Group team each Tuesday morning where I enjoy welcoming and chatting with our guests, present a visual bible story, provide art/craft activities for older children and accompany the much-loved nursery songs on guitar.

Ministry in schools

My work and presence in the schools has increased and begun to flourish over the last year. At Edwalton Primary I do regular assemblies, linking bible stories and scripture to their school core values, and presenting Christian messages at their Easter, Harvest and Christmas celebration assemblies. The children and staff now know and trust me and value my ministry there. I get fewer opportunities to do assemblies at Rosecliffe Spencer Academy than at Edwalton Primary, but more opportunities to lead RE lessons. I have led several Christianity lessons for years R, 1, and 2. They have really embraced my Godly Play lessons which I have done for them through the academic year to help them achieve curriculum needs.

Rosecliffe Year 1 class visited Holy Rood to learn about the church and Christian worship and celebrations in July, Edwalton Primary contributed

17

six scarecrows for the scarecrow trail in September, and we welcomed a total of 150 children from the schools for - an Easter Experience interactive, multi-sensory exploration of the Easter story.

In November I, along with Emily Trease, commenced a lunchtime music club at Edwalton Primary. We have taught the group to play ukelele, learnt some songs, performed in assemblies, and we have helped the children to write their own song, which they have found very exciting. Due to the success of the music club, the school have recently bought a set of 30 new ukeleles. The music club is another way I have been able to bless the school, strengthen my presence there, and work alongside some of the children more frequently

My ministry within the schools is crucial because school is at the heart of the community. It enables me to be a Christian presence there, allows me to reach hundreds of children with the Gospel, and gives Holy Rood a higher profile amongst the families represented. It’s worth noting that these are secular, state schools. God has been so good in opening doors to these schools and I believe there are greater things to come.

Hopes for next twelve months

Put simply, I hope we can create more opportunities for the children and adults we are engaging with to encounter Jesus, say yes to him and become his disciples, choose to worship with us and then help us make more disciples. It’s a real joy for me to be a ‘partner in the gospel’ here in Edwalton.

Communications Report

The Communications Sub-Group was formed at the start of 2022 and comprises Ade Perham, Julia Jefferson, Allister Craddock, Paul Srinivasan and Gordon Russell.

The initial focus of the group has been to promote consistency in the look of communications produced by the Church. To this end there has been two key introductions to our paper and digital communications:

18

As part of extending our outreach with the Edwalton Herald we increased the publication from 4 pages to 8 enabling us to have a dedicated 2 page spread for Families and Children.

We are continuing to develop our presence on Facebook for which our thanks go to Paul Srinivasan for the vibrant new look and regular fresh content. To complement our social media presence, we have also launched a new website. The new website provides the opportunity to host an expanding variety of content about our Church.

A summary of the latest PCC meeting is now available in the Church and on our website.

Something that may be on the horizon for further development is an experimental recording of a service. The results are available on the website and on Facebook where you can listen to the readings, sermon and prayers at your leisure.

Church Gardening Club

Rain, snow, hail did not deter the gardeners. Our team of willing volunteers continued to tend the church garden every Saturday throughout the year – they were, however, given Christmas weekend off and were ‘allowed’ extended coffee breaks during bad weather. The club is self-sufficient and has, in the past, organised fund raising events such as the ever popular strawberry tea. Regretfully it was decided that we were no longer physically able to organise such events ourselves so we

19

relied on donations. We were most grateful to those donors for their generosity.

Sadly vandals, for whatever reason, uprooted the three newly constructed Easter crosses in the garden and left golf balls in the holes and the squirrels were busy digging up the bulbs.

The Diocese has now ruled that, because the garden is part of the Church, although not consecrated, faculties (planning permission) must be granted before any major work can be carried out.

The Church Garden is there for all to enjoy and we are most grateful to our volunteer gardeners and coffee makers for their enthusiasm, their time and commitment.

We meet every Saturday from 10am till 12 noon and would welcome more volunteers to come and work – and drink coffee – with us.

Trevor Greaves

Edwalton Baby & Toddler Group

Since my first report we have continued to grow. Every week is different as we do not have a system whereby people are guaranteed a place or book for a term.

On average, we get at least 14 adults with accompanying children. The age range of the children continues to be 2 months to 3 years old.

Since starting we have added Vivienne to our team and she is enjoying herself immensely. We also get occasional help from Julia Tragheim and Julia Jefferson.

So the team is myself, Adrian, Joyce, Jacky and Brian.

I wish to record my thanks to all the volunteers who contribute so much to each session.

20

We have added and replaced various toys during the year and include a small craft activity for the slightly older children in our group.

We opened for one extra week during half-term and invited Musical Tots to entertain the children, this was well received.

Dancing Digits also came to one of our sessions to encourage the children to think about numbers, it was very interesting to see which of our regular children loved this activity.

I’m delighted to report that there have been no incidents

We had a Tree in the Christmas Tree festival and the Christmas Elf visited with gifts for all.

Thursday Coffee Morning and Warm Space

Our Thursday Coffee Morning experienced a great shock early 2022 when the Founder, Melvyn Dougan fell ill and I, Brian Stewart, was asked to take temporary charge. This seemed a little ironic since I had expressed to Melvyn my opinion that this idea of meeting up regularly once a week for a cup of tea or coffee would not work. How wrong I was!

It has gone from strength to strength, as well as confounding us all because of its unusual demographic with male attendees outnumbering ladies four to one. We regularly enjoy the company of 25 people and have a solid membership of 38. New members are always welcome and all are invited to drop in and ‘smell the coffee’, taste the biscuits, and feel the

21

excitement and friendly atmosphere generated by such a happy fellowship. We try not to miss a birthday, plus we do like a cake! Give it a try, you don’t have to stay, BUT, I bet you will return!

During the winter we opened ourselves’ up even more by encouraging our community to turn down their home heating and take advantage of our ‘Warm Space’, but this was only taken up with limited numbers. Even so, I suggest the PCC should consider repeating during Winter 2023/4.

It has also been suggested that we try to open a second day during the week, this may prove difficult, but I promised those that asked that I would pass the suggestion on to the PCC.

We welcome anyone to visit, no need to book!

Ladies Fellowship

Members have enjoyed another successful year with a further increase in membership. We have had a variety of interesting speakers covering many interesting and informative topics.

We had pleasure in donating £200 to Church funds and participated in the Christmas Tree Festival.

In these uncertain times when everything around us seems to be changing, it is comforting that we as a group, continue to thrive and enjoy friendship and fellowship.

22

Please feel free to join us. Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of each month in the Church Meeting Room at 7.30pm and coffee and biscuits are served at the end of the

meeting.

A programme is on the notice board in the entrance porch.

Freda Crampton

Rood Gamers

We continue to meet fortnightly on a Tuesday afternoon between 2pm and 4pm in the Church Meeting Room. It is a social gathering where we play a variety of card and board games. Our regular attendance is twelve. We are open to retired newcomers joining us, all it costs is 50p and for that you get a hot drink, biscuits and the essential chat. During the summer, if the weather is warm, we may venture into the garden for a game of boules or croquet

Keith, Trevor and David

Rood Singers

The idea for this group began towards the end of 2022, as it had been hoped for a while to introduce newer music to Church services, but at the same time it was felt that plenty of hymns that had been out for while were not being used, or had been forgotten about in recent years. And so at the beginning of 2023 an idea was put forward to try and put something together to get us to learn these new songs and hymns, and re-familiarise ourselves with ones we may have forgotten about.

Interest in this was very positive, and our first meeting took place on Friday 17[th] February, and since then we have met every other Friday, and have covered more than 40 different hymns and songs of different styles and genres from different eras. Examples of this range from us covering one verse hymns that are sung through two or three times from the 1970’s, 80’s and 90’s at our first few meetings, the hymns and songs up in the 1000’s in our Mission Praise books, and at our most recent meeting, some of the more classic style hymns in the green Kevin Mayhew books. We have also tried to work on hymns for the events in the Church calendar, Easter being the first of these and the Pentecost period being the next one, and going forward we look to work on more of those that we may have used to sing and haven’t for some time, and some newer ones that may not be in our hymn books and some Taize tunes as well.

Some of what we’ve worked on has been used in services and we hope to continue this, as well as giving people the opportunity to have enjoy having a sing of hymns and songs together outside the Sunday services.

We are a fairly small but very committed and enthusiastic group and, but will always welcome new members to provide their voices. So if you think this might be your thing, come and join us. Our first meeting after the APCM is the night after, the 28[th] April, and our May meetings are the 12[th] and 26[th] .

42nd Nottingham (Edwalton) Boys’ Brigade

In the last year we as a Company celebrated the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee last June with a party and at national level a commemorative badge was released. Also at national level was a competition to find the best picture design to commemorate the event, and the best seventy were chosen for a card to be sent to Her Majesty from the Brigade, and one of our Juniors designs was one of the lucky seventy.

24

During the summer weeks we had a trip to Stonebridge City Farm and had an evening on Victoria Embankment, and we ended the term with a weekend camp in Leicestershire with the two Clifton companies.

September was a difficult month for us as our membership numbers almost halved over the course of the month from what we had when we finished in July, leaving us in single figures. And of course we can’t not mention the passing of the Queen, which like the majority of the country left us very saddened. We displayed a tribute to Her Majesty with our Companies display at the Church Scarecrow Festival along with our albums and flyers, and outside were our four scarecrows, Bill (Anchors), Bob (Junior Section), Jim (Company Section) and Rob (Seniors).

In November, our Juniors won the Battalion Bible Knowledge competition for the first time ever. We also had our Enrolment Service in November as usual where our three newest members were enrolled, and at the end of the same month, we contributed in the usual way to the Church’s Christmas Tree Festival.

In December we said goodbye to Julia after fifteen years’ service, and her farewell tribute and our family carol service was well attended by family, BBGA and Church members. We are very grateful to the service Julia gave us during her time in the Company, and we’re sure she will take her experience into her new helping roles within the Church.

The last part of 2022 was helping celebrate the ninetieth birthday of Mr Roy Bradshaw. Anyone who knows the 42[nd] Company knows just how much Roy, or Mr B as he was known to us, is such a big part of our Company’s history and folklore. For the December Parade, the day before the big day itself, uniforms from throughout his time in the Company were worn by our members, which included commemorative badges that were released in those particular years. Also, because the weather prevented us from marching, the band played outside the Church immediately after the service.

2023 began with us gaining three new Anchors and one new Company Section member thanks to seeing info about us at Church after a service and the Christmas Tree Festival respectively.

We’ve continued to attend monthly at All Age Services and continue to contribute in many ways including doing the readings, the collection, the

25

occasional choosing of hymns to sing and engaging in the All Age talks. We are grateful to Ade and Adrian for making the services enjoyable for our children and for allowing us to contribute in the way that we do. We are also grateful for the visits they make to our Wednesday meeting nights.

This year will hopefully see our oldest member complete his Silver and Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, but not at the same time of course.

We look forward to being able to celebrate the Coronation of His Majesty the King next month as the BBGA nationally has made numerous resources and gifts to mark the occasion.

Our Annual Display and Awards Night will take place on Wednesday 14[th] June at the Church Hall, and as always, everyone is welcome to attend, showing the support you give to our Company that you do so well and we are always grateful for, and we hope that will continue.
