Conservation & Land Management Conservation Volunteers Lite Conservation Volunteers (cont/d) This collaborative project with the mentol hoolth charity. West Sussex Mind celebrated its first year in July and continued to grow from str8ngth to strength. On average 7 volunteers attended the volunt8ar days. which were held once a month. During the winter the main task was to cut back invading scrub from our chalk grassland oreas. This year we also undertook a major restorotion of the'secret Garden.. a l acre secluded piece of grassland where the rare Duke of Burgundy butterfly had been recorded. The team has three brood objectives: To support people recovering from mental health issues.. to break down the stigma of mental health in the wid9r community and last but not least, to contribute to our conservation priorities. Attendance through the y8ar wos split between roughly one third Mind service users and two thirds members of our regular team of Conservotion Volunteers. Towards the end of the winter, the annuol task of coppicing Blackthorn bushes in tho 'Brown Hairstreak Reserve, was completed. Each year a third of this dense patch of Blackthorn is coppiced to ensure there is always some Blackthorn available. ot just the right stage of development. for our heolthy population of the scarce Brown Hairstreok Butterfly to thrive. Conservation Volunteers Our 'rogular' Conservation volunteer Team continued to meet twice a month right through the year. By April we had over 100 people on our mailing list. but many were not regularly attending volunteer days. We decided to invite people to re-register themselves and the number was subsequently reduced to 51. Maintenance Group This new group started as a 'lone ranger. volunteer who offared to help restore our informotion boards. While working, he mot a walker who offered to help. By the end of the year. the group had grown to six All recently retired practical gentlemen. they enthusiastically launch into just about any tosk we care to offer them. with a good deal of camaradorie mixed in. Pond Restoration After all our hard work restoring the old millpond in summer 2022. leaks were spotted the following spring and the water level started to drop again. Undeterred. we decided to use bentonite granules to block them. Bentonite is a fom of clay which. when hydrated, swells to many times its dry volume. To reach th8 new leaks, we bought a small dingy and the most adventurous of the volunteers was sent out to drop the bentonite into place. Meanwhile. we begon work with Wokehurst Place. Kew and Steyning Grammar School to reintroduce the nationally rare Starfruit plant (Damasonium alisma) into the pond. This wetland annual has been extinct in Sussex for many decades. It has a distinctive Stashaped $68dh6ad, which scatters hundreds of seeds across shallow water in autumn. We introduced the first tranche of Starfruit plants to the pond in late July. Students from steyning Grammar School hod also boen growing Starfruit plants. from seed supplied by wokehurst. ond these were due to be planted in September. However none of these segdlings survived to maturity. We suffered a further setback when most of the plants we introduced were soon eoten by Coot. We shall have to wort unti5 summer 2024 to find out if we have any survivors. but the exercise certainly highlighted the difficulty of reintroducing a species. once It has been lost from the wild. *' Despite these challenges,, in April it was hearting to receive an award from the Steyning Society for our pond restoration efforts. Nofenco At the end of last year we were awarded a generous grant from the John Spgdan Lewis Foundation to purchase 15 Nofence collars. These work with satellites to set up 'virtual fences. across grozing areas. allowing greater control of our herd of Dexter cattle, without the need for conventional fencing. Poge 6
Nofence (contld) Management Planning We soon discovered several unforeseen challeng8S Wlth the collars. not leost tho difficulty of fitting them to fast moving cattl6. Thankfully we were able to borrow a cattle crush from the Sussex Wildlrfe Trust. which made the job much eosier. Our Conservotion Monogement Group (CMG) comprises six volunteers with exparienco in countryside managemenc plus a Countryside Ranger from the South Downs National Par Their role is to oversee the management of the land. guiding the work of the teams 'on the ground.. This year the CMG focused on developing a new management plon for the land. The plan aims to clarify priorities and identify any gaps in resources. to aid the development of our six- month action plans. The management plan is being developed by dividing the land into compartments. then assigning each compartment to o toam member. Each member us then dev6loping a draft description. vision statement ond SMART management targets for their compartments. These will be discussed and ogreed by the Group before the document is finalised. We also installed QR codes around our grazing areas. These allowed our visitors to track the location of our Dextors at any given time, a boon for dog walkers wary of walking with Cattle. The codes were used 93 times in the fist two month& Other Conservation Work other cons9rvation octivity during the year included: The phone app supplied with the Nofence collars was very revooling about the areas the Dexters prefer to graze. Frustratingly. they seemed to avoid the most specietrrich areas. which is where grazing is most beneficiall A two day visit by pupils from Hurstpierpoint College. who enthusiastically cleared vegetation from the upper Horseshoe path. The fencing of Wylie's Field, thanks to a grant from the South Downs National Park Authority. This allowed us to set the land aside for o 'rewilding experiment, which should benefit reptiles and nesting birds particularly. The formation of a 'Coppice Squad. with support from the Lost Woods Project. tasked with restoring our ovotrgrown Hazel coppice. A coppicing expert was organised to provide training for our volunteers. olthough The work was hampered by dangarous Ash trees nearby. Page 7
Data For several years. groups of volunteers have regularly monitored the condition of our chalk grassland plants. birds and butterflies and by the end of this year. we were able to add bats and moths to this list. The work is overseen by our Data Group. Their flndings guide our habitat management work ond help us to better engage with the locol community. This year. for the first time we begon botonicol monitoring on Wylie's Field. For this we simply attempted to record everything we saw. So far our botany surveys have not yieldod any strong trend& However it is clear that Tor grass is the dominont plant over much of our chalk grassland and that therefore we need to do more active management. if we are to recover this clossic downlond habitat Botany This year we continued with the botanical monitoring technique we started in 2022. Wo focused on recording the plants thot are good indicators of the 'health' of the habitat in our one square metre samples. This helps us to assess the effects of our consenrfation management on our species-rich cholk grossland. Rangers from the South Downs Notional Park Authority brought their 'roboflial' to the Rifle Range again. so that we could repeat the cutting ond raking of the test strips we began in 2022 The aim was to see if this managgmont would control invasive Tor grass (Brachypodium pinnotum) and so improve floristic diversity. common Whitethroat Birds The bird recording group grew considerably through the yeor and now hos 49 people on its contact list. with a regulor ottondonce of 12-15 porticipants. The group met each second Sunday of the month to walk part of the site, recording the birds seen or heord. In late August the total number of species recorded reached a remarkable 104, after o Honey Buzzard was Seen flying over the rifle range in a southerly direction. Pag8 8
Butterflies Butt&rfly monitoring has been corried out by a specially trained team of volunteers since 2016. The method used closely follows the standard technique odvocated by Butterfly Conservotion and involves walking three predefined transects and recording all the butterflies seen. we had 48 registered butterfly monitors on our list by the beginning of the year. but only a dozen were actively collecting records. To encourage more, we organised a butterfly training day with buttgrfly expert. Neil Hulme. This year Wylie's Field was odded to the butterfly transect list ond it proved to be an excellent spot for butterflies. Overall 2023 proved to be o y6ar of 'winners and losers,. Gotokaoper, Small Heoth, Rgd Admirol. Peacock. Brown Argus. Small Skippor and Large Skipper all did well. There were notable numbers of Red Admiral in particular, but these were immigrants from the European continent and therefore sadly not a reflection of our management effortsl Of more concern was the continued fall in numbers of the Adonis Blue, suggesting that our open. short grazed chalk grossland may be in decline, Bats We started running bot survey evenings this year. thanks to a keen volunteer with both the specialist knowledge and the bat detecting equipment. Pipistrelles were by far the species most commonly recorded. closely followed by Serotines. Both these species particularly favoured the upper Pond and the Targets orea on the Rifle Range, These ore sheEt8red by trees and probably attracted particularly large numbers of their insect prey. Moths Our moth surveys storted thls spring. using a Robinson MV (mercury vapour bulb) 125W trap and generator. The team trapped at the Rifle Range. because of its sheltered ospoct and easy access. Over 1.095 moths were recorded of 185 species, during only 5 partial nights of trapping. Of these, 13 species ore listed by the Internationol Union for Conservotion of Nature red list. This included the Endangered Grass Rivulet Numbers of this species have declined by 96% in tho last 35 year& Pago 9
Public Engagement Publlc Engagement Group The role of this group is to maximise our eff&ctivgnoss in communicating with the local community. This is crucially important if we ore to fulfil our remit to educate and encouroge people to engage with the naturol onvironmgnt in a positive way. Our public engagement encompasses our'on-line, presence, our on-site information boards. leaflets and posters. as well as our Friends initiative and public events. Online Engagement Our main online focus this year was developing a new website for the SDS. This took rother longer than we expected, because the process opened up a host of issues about how we should best present the SDS to the public, ond whether wo neoded to develop o more consistont'brand, forthe charity. Wonderfully, cffter some trial and error, we were able to engage o professional wab and graphic designer. thanks to a grant from the Ctrop Community Fund. As the year closed we had at last begun to move forward with some confidence. and we remoin optimistic about completing the chollenging task next financial year. Events In addition to our species recording days, conservation meetings and management team get-togethers, we held 14 events for the public this year. These included old favourites for naturalists. such os the annual Songs of the Dawn. Bushcroft Days and the GI0worM Hunt We also organised some events aimed at engaging people who have little natural history interest but who still enjoy experiencing the land. These included the Easter Egg Rollaton. a Mindfulness walk. and our Christmas Wreath moking event at the nearby Star Inn. Page10
Young People Youth Engagement Worker At the end of last year we heard thot we had received sufficient grant funds from the Nineveh Trust and the Wilson Memorial Trust to be oble to create this new post. The Young People's Group and the SDS Trustees were then taskod with finalising a job description. an employment contract. job advertisemonts. and arranging an interview session. At last we were thrilled to be oble to employ Beth Priest as our new Youth Engagement Worker in September. Launching our Junior Management Board via a fire pit session at the Rifle Ronge Target& Eleven young people attended and the plan is that this group will develop into a vehicle for young peopl8 to engage with the manogement decisions of the SDS. Beth went on to organise o sories of events for young people. These included.. the installation of a new entrance gate to the Steyning Downland. which students from steyning Grommar School helped to build and decorate (kindly funded by the Anchor Foundation. The Arts Society Steynin9 and a private benefactor): steyning Grammar School We continued our regular engagement work with Steyning Grammar School over the year. For example. each class of Year 7 students visited the SDS from November through to March. carrying out practical habitat monagement wor the installation of a bespoke firè pit ot the Rifle Range Targets. to help creote o hub for youth activity on the Steyning Downlond; Page 11
Strategy & Development Steering Group New Premises Our four management groups met together with our Trustees as the 'SDS Steoring Group twice this year. In July we completed o site tour, giving membors an opportunity to exchange notes about their area of work. We met ogain in December. when we were treated to presentations from each of tho groups, and an introduction to our new youth engagement initiative. The SDS had been bosed at the Wiston Estate Off ic8 since fcs inception. during which time both the Estate and the charity had grown signrficantly. At the December Steering Group meeting. it was unanimously decided that it was the right time for the SDS to relocate to a premises of its own. Shortly aftenNards a room became ovailable at o primo location above H J Burns Estote Agents. in Steyning High Street. and the move was successfully completed on 15th March 2024. At our December meeting. we took the opportunity to relaunch our 'Friends' scheme. This scheme gives local people who ore unable to be actively involved, an opportunity to support our work by making o monthly financial donation. We are looking to expand the scheme in the months ahead and in time. develop it as our core financial supporL The change of premises will be a significant challenge financially and organisationolly for the chority. but it also creates a wonderful opportunity to improve our engagement with tho local community. Trustees The Trusteos mot four times during the yeor. Areas discussed included: Insurance and developing our health & safety policy Public ongagemont strategy Adopting an integratecl database Policy review Financial monogement ils Pag8 12
Financial Review Accounts The accounts show that spending decreased to £41.051 from £55.276 last year. The reduction was due to the completion of capital spending on o large projocts last year. these being the pond restoration project and the Nofenco grazing initiative. The total unrestricted fiJnds Carried forward increased from £51,972 to £82,784. This is particularly welcome. taking account the employment of our new Youth Engagemont Workor. and tho potential for significant additionol spend involved with our move to new offices and to address tho ongoing effects of Ash Dieback Our total income for the year also docreased. from £72.552 to £51,863 as we returned from exceptional expenditure on large projects. to focus more on our core conservation wor The finonciol position of the Scheme has been and remains stable and healthy. with the Twste8s expressing no concerns. Vory encouragingly, our unrestricted Income increased signrficantly on last year. from £33,089 to £51.883. This reflects our shift in focus away from external funding sources towards building SUPF)Ort from the local community, although grant funding remoins a crucial source of funds. The intention is that our longer term funding needs will be addressod by the further expansion of our Friands Scheme. led by the Public Engagement Group. although wg will also continue with Trust fund applications to address larger. torgeted initiativos. Support Volunteers The number of our 'core supporters. (those receiving the SDS newsletter) increased again slightly this yaar to 907. with a further 46 email oddresses added. Membership of our Conservation Volunteers decreased to 51, after we invited everyone on the previous mailing list to resubscribe. but only if they considerod themselves to be active volunteers. The team of Lookerers. who keep a daily check on the herd of Dextgr cattle. remoined full ot 7 members ond the bird group incraased to 49 supporters. The South Downs National Park Authority continues to greotly support the work of the Scheme. with their Ranger staff ond by generous financial support for individual projects. The Trustees are most grateful for the support of our partner organisotions. including Wast Sussex Mind, the Steyning Community Orchard, and steyning Grommar School and to our funders this year. the Nineveh Trust. the Wilson Memorial Trust. the Anchor Foundation. the Arts Society Steyning and the South Downs National Park Authority. The Friends scheme continued its slow growth this year from 83 to 68 monthly donors. We hove begun to better resource this group. anticipating thot os the Friends initiotive grows. we will be able to reduce our dependency on ontroff grant Last but definitely not 18OSt. particular and heartfelt thanks to the SDS volunteers for their faithful dedication again this year- you are very much apprecioted. We ore porticularly grateful to the Wiston Estate for its continued support in providing staff time and the use of equipment. in addition to its regular and significont financial donation& Page 14
