## **St Anne’s Lydgate, 2020 Annual Vestry and APCM Minutes**

Sunday 27[th] September 2020

Present: Rev’d Canon Sharon Jones (Chair), David Marshall (Minute Secretary), Al Gillian (Treasurer), Frank Boocock, Susan Fleming, Joanne Coxon, Anne Smith, Jennifer Greenwood, Rev’d Pat Gillian, Gwen Morton, John Pearson, Kath Hodges, Rachel Damianou.

Present via Zoom Video Link – Sue Willetts, Neil Davies, David Lloyd.

## **Annual Easter vestry meeting**

Only one nomination was received this year. The sole nomination was David Marshall.

Sharon asked if there was another volunteer for the second Churchwarden role, but there were no takers at the meeting.

No objections were raised for David Marshall to continue as Churchwarden and was duly elected.

Canon Sharon pointed out this would be the last year David would stand as a church warden and St Anne’s would need to have at least one, preferably two church wardens who will put themselves forward at the next APCM.

Canon Sharon and Jennifer on behalf of the congregation thanked David for his work in the role of church warden.

There being no further business, the Annual Easter Vestry meeting was brought to a close.

## **Annual Parishioners Council Meeting**

## **Approval of minutes of APCM held 28[th] April 2019**

Susan Fleming pointed out that she was present at the meeting but is shown as having given her apologies. This amendment was noted.

No further comments were raised about the minutes and they were approved as an accurate reflection of the meeting.

## **Presentation of the General Report**

The General Report had been distributed prior to this meeting.

No further comments were made about the report.

Page 5

## **Treasurer’s Financial Report**

The Treasurer’s Financial Report had also been circulated prior to the meeting. In the report, the treasurer, Al Gillian, had provided a detailed analysis of the financial situation but highlighted the following to the meeting.

It is currently a difficult time, financially for St Anne’s. We have had to use reserves to pay our Parish Share which means we are unable to take any more from reserves in the future. It is estimated we will pay 50% of our Parish Share in 2020.

Prior to lockdown, the PCC had planned to start a stewardship campaign however this will now be revisited next year when church has fully reopened. Al also encouraged people to consider what they currently give to church and appealed for people to give extra where they can.

Sharon then thanked Al for his hard work as treasurer and for the preparation of the report.

Sharon went on to point out that there are many churches across the diocese and further afield which are in a similar position to St Anne’s. The Diocese of Manchester are looking at numbers which are sustainable across the whole diocese and said that no church’s future is guaranteed. That aside Sharon stated she believes God is still all around us and believes He is doing something drastic within the church which will shape a very different church in the future.

## **Electoral Roll Report**

Rachel Damianou, our Electoral Roll Officer, made reference to her report which had been included in the General Report. A question was asked as to how many were on the Electoral Roll as of the date of the APCM – Rachel confirmed there were now 99 on the roll.

Canon Sharon thanked Rachel for her work in maintaining the roll.

Child Protection Report

Susan Fleming, our Safeguarding Officer, referred to her report which had been included in the General Report. Susan further added that there is concern about the number of volunteers which we currently have. The number is down and this could cause an issue in the future with regards to adult/child ratios. Susan asked the PCC to consider what needs to be done to reverse this.

The meeting was unanimously in favour of electing all of the above.

## **Deputy Wardens**

The following agreed to continue to serve in the role of Deputy Churchwarden:

Mr Brian Devenport

Mrs Anne Smith

Mrs Jennifer Greenwood

Mr David Lloyd

All were voted for unanimously and were accepted as Deputy Wardens.

## **Deanery synod**

This year, it is necessary to elect our representatives for the Deanery Synod.

Frank Boocock, Richard Darlington and Al Gillian have been our representatives. Both Frank and Richard had indicated they were not seeking re-election.

Al Gillian (proposed by Natalie Doran and seconded by Joyce Devenport) indicated he was willing to stand for re-election.

The meeting unanimously approved the re-election of Al Gillian.

Page 7

## **Examiner of accounts for 2021**

Mike Royle was proposed and accepted as independent examiner of the accounts for another year.

## **Elections of Charities to support**

It was agreed that in-line with previous years the Church will support 3 Charities, one local, one national and one international.

The charities proposed were:

Local – Lydgate Community Association

National – Traidcraft Exchange

International – Medicines San Frontier

As the APCM is being held much later than usual, and as our after service coffer morning (the main source of income for the charities) a suggestion was made that the charities we choose should remain as our charities throughout 2021 and to the APCM in 2022.

It was agreed by the meeting that these three charities will be the charities we support and that they should remain as our chosen charities until the APCM in 2022.

## **Any Other Business**

Parish Hall – Jennifer Greenwood explained that the Lydgate Community Association (the LCA) and the Parochial Church Council (the PCC) had agreed with immediate effect the day to day management of the Parish Hall will be taken on by the LCA. Jennifer said there had been a lot of hard work put in to make this happen and the partnership was exciting for church, the community and the parish hall itself. Sharon thanked everyone involved for their hardwork.

Sharon and David Marshall (on behalf of the PCC) and Jennifer (on behalf of the LCA) formally signed the agreement between the two parties.

Trees in the Church Grounds – The Building Committee was asked for an update on the removal of some trees in the church ground which had been identified in a report by Nik Anderson. It was explained that a faculty application had been made but, due to the Covid restrictions, the outcome had been delayed. Sharon confirmed that a faculty is needed.

It was further explained we would now have to wait until the nesting season has ended before any further work could be carried out.

There being no further business, the meeting closed.

## **Reports**

## **Electoral Roll Officer’s Report**

Every six years it is a legal requirement to completely revise our Electoral Roll. Everyone needs to fill in an application to the Roll form and we did this two years ago. This usually results in a trimmed down roll initially.

At our year end last December there were 99 members on the Electoral Roll. 67 are resident and 32 are non-resident in the Parish. The Roll has remained static since last year, understandably since we have been unable to meet together in person for the majority of the year. However, as we now start to reopen our activities it would be good to see new members joining the roll as they get involved with our church family.

If anyone wishes to take on a role in the church, they should ideally be a member of the Roll, so it is important that as many people as possible are encouraged to join the Electoral Roll. After the AGM and throughout the year anyone not on the Roll is welcome to join at any point.

Rachel Damianou

## **Team Rector’s Report**

‘20-20’ is normally an expression used to describe clear vision; acute sight; perfect seeing. Together we discovered last year in a way we never dreamt of the implications of that new focus. 2020 was the year we saw afresh what it means to be mortal, frail and not have all the answers. We began to understand the implications for the community of keeping the vulnerable safe. We saw through fresh eyes the value we place on relationships and what is necessary for human flourishing.

2020 was the year we began to see the extent to which the church is more than the building. We built new online communities of worship and support, and networks of pastoral care. We discovered the significance that music, particularly hymns, have for us; human touch, and the limitations of internet friendship.

We have stared into the eyes of fear and insecurity, of financial challenge and loneliness. We have known irritation, frustration and powerlessness, sickness and grief.

Into all this maelstrom of emotions and uncharted waters we discovered we are not all in the same boat, but we are all in the same storm. We realise that Christ is in the storm with us. He is the anchor to whom we cling; the one from whom we draw strength when we are ‘all at sea’ and fear shipwreck. We will emerge changed. ‘Normal’ will be hard to define and recognise.

Page 11

God has surprised us in many ways, not least through the kindness of strangers and through recognising our own weaknesses as well as our strengths. God has reminded us of the joy of living in such a beautiful place and sharing in the gift which is his whole creation. God has revealed the unspoken and unrecognised heroes in our midst who are Christ’s body.

I would like to thank all who have led, supported, encouraged; all who have risen to new challenges and contributed through prayer, care and service; our church Wardens, secretaries and treasurers particularly for working to ‘steady the ship’ during the pandemic.

Most of all I would like to pay tribute to Susan Brierley, Team Administrator, constantly rearranging wedding dates and coordinating funerals, and the outstanding contribution of our ministerial team and our techno stars supported by Paul Wooding. Our Palm Sunday, Easter, Whit Friday and Christmas broadcasts will live long in our memories. Thank you all for everything.

Sharon

## **Safeguarding Officer (Responsible for Children and Adults)**

## **Introduction**

I continue to update myself with all the duties expected of this role (which now includes safeguarding vulnerable adults as well as children and young people) by reading the Safeguarding Handbook of Policy and Procedures published by the Diocese of Manchester (updated October 2018) and am up to date with all the relevant on line training provided by the Diocese..

## **Child Registration details**

The recommendations regarding the registration of all children attending Junior Church, Crèche and Youth Group are followed and each parent/guardian is required to complete a registration form for their child. All information was updated in September 2019 to ensure the safety of the children in our care. Due to the pandemic there was no requirement for registration in September 2020 as no face to face or virtual groups took place.

## **Volunteer Details**

We have not had any new volunteers during the last 12 months but in normal times all such applicants have an interview with the Church Wardens before commencing their role to ensure they understand that St Anne’s takes safeguarding seriously. A completed application form, two references and a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) certificate are held for each volunteer. All DBS certificates are renewed every 5 years in line with Manchester Diocese guidelines.

Page 12

All our current volunteers have completed on line child safeguarding training and most have recent face to face training which must now be updated every 3 years. At the moment all safeguarding courses have moved on line and the Diocese is keeping this under review.

Information on our volunteers is kept in a locked safe.

Currently we only have 4 volunteers for Junior Church, 2 for Youth Group and 1 for Crèche. If and when face to face groups recommence this will make fulfilling the recommended good practice of adult/child ratios during Junior Church sessions challenging for the leaders.

## **Safeguarding Statements**

Our Safeguarding Policy Promoting a Safer Church is in line with guidance from the Diocese and is available for viewing on the notice board at the back of church along with the Referral Flow Chart stating what to do if there is a case of suspected child abuse.

The parish Safeguarding Handbook (new for 2019) is also on the notice board and all volunteers have a copy of the “pocket guide”.

There is now a Safeguarding Statement on the Saddleworth Team website (new for 2019).

## **PCC members**

In 2019 it was made a requirement that all PCC members should have a DBS check completed because they are trustees of a charity overseeing work with children and adults at risk and therefore have safeguarding responsibilities. This has been completed now for all but the new members of our PCC elected in 2020.

## **The Future**

I wish to let the PCC know I will be standing down from the role of Safeguarding Officer as of the AGM 2022. This gives 12 months for a new appointment to be made. I would be happy to speak to anyone considering taking on this role to give an overview of its responsibilities.

Susan Fleming

Parish Safeguarding Officer January 2021

## **Churchwarden Report including the Fabric of the Church, The Churchyard and the Goods and Ornaments**

In previous years, I have stated the number of people who have worshipped at St Anne’s throughout the year and how many services we have held. Each year, with pride, I have written about how the number of people who worship in our church continues to grow and

Page 13

the number of services we hold had averaged about 5 per week. In 2020, like many other things, this changed.

The actual number of worshippers last year who attended church was 3,043 (2019: 13,003) at the 79 services we held (2019: 258).

Because our doors had to close, it was a year when people were unable to come to church. But even though our doors were closed our church flourished in new and different ways. Pastoral groups were established ensuring that during their isolation people were keeping well; people shopped for others; people dog walked for others; WhatsApp groups became the way in which stories of St Anne’s past were shared; Zoom coffee morning and quizzes kept us entertained.

Even with the building closed we were able to demonstrate the strength of St Anne’s church. It is not merely the beautiful building in which we previously came to worship – it is the amazing people who come together in many different ways to be our church in the community, on our streets and in the online world – letting the light of Christ shine.

Worship continued albeit through a variety of different mediums. The Saddleworth Team broadcast weekly Zoom services and special pre-recorded services for Easter and Christmas amongst others. Rev’d Pat became increasingly more tech-savvy by producing 3 different services and reflections each week. Preparing these was no easy task. A huge thank you to Canon Sharon, Rev’d Pat and the amazing team of clergy across the Saddleworth Team which we are blessed to have.

This is my final report as church warden. I have very much enjoyed fulfilling the role of church warden over the last six years and I am hopeful that two people will come forward to take on the role at the next APCM.

The support I have had through my team as church warden has been vast. In particular, I would like to thank, Brian Devenport, Jennifer Greenwood, David Lloyd and Anne Smith, who all, as deputy wardens, ensure the services, at St Anne’s, run smoothly. Anne also makes sure the Baptisms, Weddings and Funerals at St Anne’s all go according to plan. As a team, we are supported by the sidespeople, the readers, the Eucharistic ministers, the intercessors, the flower team, the cleaning team, the Electoral Roll Officer, the Sexton, the Vergers, the card distribution team, the coffee team and everyone else who gives up their time and effort to volunteer. I am extremely grateful to you all.

Despite the lockdown we all faced our links with St Anne’s School remained strong. Assemblies, Eucharist services and the Experience Sessions continued albeit virtually. Although our mid-week family service had to stop in March 2021 there was an average of 130 people each week with many new families attending. At the time of writing, we are hopeful that Covid restrictions will continue to relax so we can restart the service and welcome back so many more people into church.

Page 14

I was extremely proud when my daughter, Holly, was asked to be May Queen. Although her reign has been delayed, I am sure she will definitely be a great ambassador for St Anne’s.

The Building Committee continued to look after our grounds and buildings. Most of their work is unseen but essential in making sure the building and grounds are safe for all to use. Thank you for your ongoing work.

Illness and bereavement are an inevitable part of humanity. We especially remember the members of our parish who have passed away in the last twelve months. Our thoughts and prayers are with them and their families.

David Marshall

## **Parochial Church Council in 2020**

In the calendar year 2020, we held 6 regular PCC meetings and two additional meetings in February to explore the setting up of a Stewardship Campaign. There are 12 members of the PCC and the meetings held had between 6 and 12 people present which was in line with previous years. At the 2020 APCM, Neil Davies was re-elected to the PCC and Frank Boocock, after standing down as Deanery Synod Representative, was elected as a PCC member. In addition to this, Joanne Coxon and Natalie Doran were both elected for the first time to the PCC. Also at the 2020 APCM, Brian Devenport and Richard Darlington both stepped down as PCC members and we thank them both for the service they have given in standing for the PCC.

Unfortunately, for the first time in a number of years we were unable to pay our 2020 Parish Share in full. Further information relating to this is contained within the financial report. Despite being unable to pay the 2020 share in full and a further increase to our Parish Share, the PCC will make every effort to pay as much as possible in 2021.

During 2020, there were many items which formed the agenda for the PCC:

## **Church Building and Grounds:**

Applications were made for the felling of trees within the graveyard. It was intended the logs from these trees would be used to mark the edge of a path in the lower graveyard.

Building on our bronze award for being an Eco church we continued to explore ways in which we could become more energy efficient. Using the funds donated from May Queen Francesca it was decided to replace the bulbs in church with LED lamps in order to reduce our use of electricity.

Page 15

Our current graveyard is close to capacity. Consequently, the PCC are moving forward with plans to create additional space by having the ground on the west side of church consecrated. Discussions were held with the diocese to do this.

## **Parish Hall:**

The management of the Parish Hall continued to feature heavily on the PCC agenda through 2020. Thankfully, the PCC and the Lydgate Community Association (LCA) entered into a Management Agreement for the LCA to take on the management responsibility of the Parish Hall. The agreement is very much a partnership between the LCA and the PCC with two members of the PCC also being trustees of the LCA.

The PCC have committed to supporting the LCA in carrying out its role and will ensure, the PCC (alongside the LCA) actively seek funds to finance urgent and necessary repairs and refurbishments which the Parish Hall desperately needs.

Some of these repairs were carried out in the year including the substantial repairs to the Hall roof in order to make it watertight. The PCC also agreed to transfer the balance of the Parish Hall fund to the LCA.

## **Fundraising:**

The PCC were concerned at the ever increasing costs we face as a parish. During meetings we planned fundraising ideas in order to generate further funds for church. Unfortunately, most of these plans have been put on hold as a result of the lockdown. These are ideas which we hope to revisit when we are able to fully reopen.

The PCC also looked at ways of making it easier for those who don’t use collection envelopes or standing orders. It was intended to purchase Electronic Giving Plates so people could make donations to church via contactless means (card, phone or watch). This was also postponed due to the lockdown but this will be back on the agenda again, when church is fully open.

## **Reopening of Church**

At the first lockdown in March 2020 and again in November, we were forced to close church. When the Government (and Diocese) announced we were able to reopen, this could only be done on the approval by the PCC of a risk assessment to ensure all those who worship at St Anne’s would remain as safe as possible. This was reviewed and signed off by the PCC.

It was felt by the PCC that we were able to reopen for the 11am Sunday service only but even with only one service, we would have to restrict the number of people in church to 28 household/support bubbles to ensure there is adequate social distancing. In light of the government and diocesan guidelines, other restrictions were also put in place, for example: no singing during the service, only one form of Holy Communion to be administered and the implementation of track and trace systems.

Page 16

## **Church Building Committee**

Along with the rest of the world, the work of the Church Building Committee came to a halt in 2020, so activity has been limited. However there have been a few things happening of note.

## **Church Roof**

The start of the Church year in April 2020 saw us in full lockdown, and the work on the Church roof paused until things opened up a bit. Work was quickly resumed when allowed and the holes in the roof were patched, the gutters cleared, and the roof lead was painted with new smartDNA paint. All this was finished by the end of May, and hopefully that will see the Church watertight for a few more years, finger crossed.

## **Parish Hall**

To support the work ongoing in the Parish Hall, members of the Building Committee have helped out with jobs in and around the Hall, mainly tidying and moving items, but capacity to support this work was hampered by the various lockdowns and social distancing measures, but also due to limited capacity from the Building Committee. Capacity continues to be an issue as we go forward, more on this later.

## **Working Parties**

The ability to meet and undertake working parties at Church has been very limited and as a result there haven’t been many meetings this year, however we did meet in March 2021 to give the Church a spruce up before re-opening. It was great to see so many people up at Church and we managed to get through a large number of jobs. This ranged from sweeping, cutting back ivy and shrubs, clearing drainage channels, and a good clear out of the organ loft and flower team cupboard. Many thanks for all who supported this, and special thanks to Brian and Joyce Devenport for organising.

## **Church lights**

During 2020 we had planned to replace the main lights in Church to be more energy efficient, but due to the 3[rd] national lockdown this work paused and was put on hold. However, once things started to open up again things progressed well. I’d like to thank Al Gillian for applying for and being successfully offered a grant from Saddleworth Hydro for £1000 to fund the work. In April 2021, the work to replace the 19 old 150w halogen spotlights with 50w LED lights was completed by Max Electrical and the reduction in energy usage as a result, should help us reduce our energy usage.

## **Building Committee**

In November 2020 I resigned as Chair of the Building Committee. This wasn’t a decision I took lightly but felt that with a significant increase in working hours and responsibility at work, it was a step I felt I needed to take. Capacity in the Building Committee has been

Page 17

limited for a number of years as most of its members have busy full-time jobs and families which means we do not have the capacity to take on large projects. The main body of the Church is fast approaching 240 years old and as you can imagine, buildings of this age are expensive and complex to maintain. In the next 5 – 10 years the roof will need to be replaced, and the external walls will all need to be re-pointed to stop water getting in. Already we have seen one of the marble plaques inside Church fall off the wall and shatter, all due to damp in the north wall, so there is a real need to address this. However, the costs associated with this kind of work on heritage buildings are huge and can only be achieved through applying for and being successful in securing multiple grants. This all takes a significant amount of organisational effort and time. If anyone feels this is a role they can take on, please do get in touch.

Many thanks

David Lloyd

## **Worship Committee**

The worship committee is a sub-committee of the PCC and focuses on the worship and services at St Anne’s. Membership is not restricted to the PCC and it would be fruitful if members of the congregation joined to give a wider perspective on our worship.

We encourage the children to be involved in the services by taking part with readings, intercessions, being acolytes and singing. We also encourage our Youth Group to help lead services and in the research that is sometimes needed beforehand.

Well, this year has certainly been different in all aspects. We started the year well: holding our normal services on a Sunday and on a Wednesday evening. That was until March when they all came to a standstill because of Covid. Our last service was March 15[th] and then the church building under government advice had to stay shut. Sadly, with one week left to complete our Confirmation Course our Confirmation Service with the Bishop of Middleton was cancelled. This has yet to rearranged but hopefully will be soon.

Weddings and baptisms were also cancelled and at this point I would like to thank Anne Smith and Susan at our Team Office for all the work they have done trying to move wedding and baptism dates at this difficult time with the church building being open and then closed.

Funeral services were also affected, at first funerals could only be held at the graveside or at the Crematorium and numbers of mourners were limited. These numbers changed repeatedly over the year causing difficulties all round. This was a very difficult time for families as they mourned and for the clergy officiating at these services. We are looking at the end of the restrictions to holding a special service where the families of those bereaved during the last year can come along to remember their loved ones and to celebrate their lives.

Page 18

When the church building was open for services, we had to limit numbers for all types of services to comply with health and safety and we had to stop singing altogether during any service along with social mixing. So, as you can imagine this made a big impact on all our services but with forward thinking and changes, we managed well and again I would like to thank all those involved in making these changes to help the worship at St Anne’s to continue as a community.

Our weekday family service and Junior Church again were cancelled but we have managed to keep in contact with families of these groups via WhatsApp, St Anne’s Facebook and by email sending out sheets for the children to complete on that week’s readings and by videoed services on a Wednesday and Sunday.

Our participation in School assemblies and Experience Church has been a challenge and I have had to learn lots about computers to be able to live-stream and upload videos for the school. The Experiences have all been delivered to the classes by power-point and we held our first School Eucharist Service again on-line which worked well. We have also managed to hold End of Term Services along with a very successful Christingle Service and Harvest Service with the food from the Harvest service, brought by the children, being delivered to Oldham Foodbank, bible presenting services to Year 6 and Reception again all on-line so new skills for all being developed all the time.

During the Autumn some lay-leader training sessions were held (on-line) to help people prepare to lead “Service of the Word” services, but shortly after this training we had to shut our church building again. Hopefully going forward those who attended will be able to put their training into practice.

Keeping in contact with our congregation has been an important part of our remit with people phoning, shopping and being there for others as much as they can with us all working together to make sure our community is cared for. Weekly/daily services have been on the Saddleworth Website and on our St Anne’s Facebook and WhatsApp and will continue while restrictions are in place.

So, you can see we are moving forward at St Anne’s in many ways but are always open to new ideas and helpers so please get in touch if you have ideas to share.

## **Report from the Sexton**

2020 has been a strange year and, inevitably, with the tight Government restrictions there has been a limit to what could be done in our churchyard. However, we have made some progress with the cutting back of vegetation and low branches of trees. Invasive plants have also been replaced in some areas with such as buddleias to attract pollinators. On the north side of church a number of pyracantha bushes have been planted two to each window to deter break-ins, supplemented by holly bushes transplanted from other parts of the churchyard. This will probably be covered better by the Building Committee report.

Page 19

In the lower yard, repair work has begun on the retaining wall at the foot of the bank below the Garden of Remembrance and is being finished off with flat stones at a height suitable for sitting. The gates are in need of repair, as one of the posts has rotted and the area nearby and the path on the south side of the new area are in need of tidying up. These jobs will need to be completed soon as we are trying to make the arrangements for consecration of the area, although this may be delayed until the end of lockdown.

Government restrictions have discouraged families from interring ashes, so such services came to a halt in March. Burials could go ahead, with restrictions, so there have been a number of these. We anticipate that there will be considerable demand for Memorial services as soon as restrictions have eased. Here are the numbers for 2020:

## 3 Burials

## 4 Interments of Ashes

4 Memorials, plaques or additional inscriptions were added

## **Parish Hall Report**

Last year was a year of major changes in more ways than one for the Parish Hall. Following the departure of John and Arlene Lees in 2019 we were sadly left without a Parish Hall Management Committee as such. A committed band of people kept things going and the church Buildings Committee took on the role of overseeing the maintenance of the building.

However, earlier in the year Lydgate Community Association was established with its main aim being to restore and maintain the Parish Hall for the benefit not just of the church but the wider community. Six trustees from both the local community and church were appointed to steer the project with church supporting the group and seeing this as a way of further extending our ministry in the community. Everyone was very excited, then the pandemic hit!

This meant the Hall was forced to close in March last year and from breaking even went to a position of having no income at all. Running costs have continued to be met by the church and LCA have continued to work tirelessly to make the most of the money raised so far and the opportunity of the Hall being closed to do as many renovations as possible. Folk from the local community and church have given their time, money and efforts to make the most of the situation. As a result, the Hall is well on the way to being water- tight and having a cosmetic facelift inside to hopefully encourage more people into the building.

More fund raising events are planned for later this year and grant applications are being submitted so we can do so much more. Watch this space as we start to reopen………….

Page 20

## **Coffee Team**

Coffee and tea are usually served after every 11 am Sunday service thanks to our dedicated team of volunteers. This year we have been unable to do this, even when church was open for services. It is looking likely that this will continue at least until the summer. However, the coffee team have not remained idle! We have helped clear out the kitchen and in particular the pot cupboard in the Parish Hall ready for when the hall can reopen. After much decluttering and tip runs we are raring to go again!

Thank you to everyone who has, and will hopefully very soon again, brew up, clean up, share a cuppa and donate!

## **Card Distribution Report**

Despite the challenges of the Covid pandemic, I am pleased to report that Easter and Christmas cards were delivered throughout the Parish within the expected timescales. Thanks should go to the 46 volunteers who delivered approximately 2762 cards to 54 areas.

Special thanks expressed to Al Gillian who assisted the counting of cards and delivery of envelopes to the team of volunteers. It was not possible for this particular exercise to be undertaken in church due to the pandemic and as a newcomer to the role of coordinator I was greatful for Al's help and expertise.

With regard to Easter 2021, I am confident that the team will be able to deliver again on time. Looking further ahead it will be prudent to seek replacement volunteers for 3 areas following church members moving away, but this can be best arranged when church reopens and communication once again becomes a little easier.

Finally. I would like to pay tribute to Richard Darlington who handed over the reins of coordinator to me with supreme efficiency and his usual courtesy. I hope to be an able replacement.

## **Flower Team**

What a strange year it has been for everyone.

I am pleased to report that Maggie feels she is able to re-join the Flower Team following her operation. As Joanne has now retired from her full-time career, she feels she can contribute more time to the flower rota and this means we are back up to 4 regular flower arrangers, (Tracey and Joyce make up the team) with help on special occasions from Gill Jordan and Hannah Manifold.

Page 21

With the National Lockdown and lack of church services during the year, we have not been able to complete many of the flower arrangements and we apologise if your sponsorship weekend was one that was missed. We hope life will get back to a more normal routine and flowers will be back in an open church. We have completed our rota for 2021 - 2022 and the following weeks are available to sponsor if you wish. Contact Joyce Devenport (0161 964 3202)

## **Junior Church**

At the beginning of 2020, Junior Church had good levels of regular attendees with a number of new starters. We were hopeful we would build on this as the year progressed. However, as with everything else, this was put on hold due to the pandemic.

Although Junior Church was unable to meet physically, we reached out to families to offer weekly activities, resources and quizzes which linked with the weekly Gospel. This was further supported by the weekly services which Rev’d Pat posted via social media.

Competitions were also held asking the children to design our annual Christmas Card which was delivered to all of the houses throughout the parish.

We are very much looking forward to opening the doors of Junior Church once more and as soon as we are able to do so we will welcome back all of our children.

Page 22

## **Youth Group**

Our Youth Group usually meets on the 2nd and 3rd Sundays in the month in the Parish Hall. It is for anyone of senior school age. Due to the pandemic, we have been unable to meet face to face since March 2020 and it looks like this will continue until September this year.

We have done what we can to keep in touch and keep things moving. Child Protection issues have limited what could be done but for some time we had a regular Sunday email with a thought for the week, activity and where the young people were encouraged to feed back with news and to join in with quizzes and questions. In addition, Pat did her regular children and adult video services that the young people were encouraged to engage with.

None of this could replace our regular meetings and we hope some of our existing members will feel able to come back and help kick start the group again with new members who will have moved up from Junior church during the pandemic.

Youth group aims to be a fun, relaxed environment for older children to explore their faith which we hope to do again as soon as possible.

## **Rose Queen**

I was delighted when Canon Sharon asked me to become May Queen for St Anne’s church. The Retinue mums started to plan for my crowning in May and for lots of different events to raise money for my two chosen charities: St Anne’s Church and Francis House Children’s Hospice.

Unfortunately, everything changed when the country went into lockdown. The crowning was cancelled along with the Whit Walks when I would have represented St Anne’s.

Thankfully I was eventually crowned (as Rose Queen) in October. Thank you to Canon Sharon for leading the service and to my sister Grace for crowning me.

So far, we have not been able to attend any “At Homes” and have not been able to plan my own. We have only been able to arrange one fundraising event which was to sell Body Shop products at Christmas. Thank you to everyone who supported us in doing this and a special thank you to Natalie Doran who processed all of the orders.

Hopefully things will change soon and my reign as Rose Queen will become more normal.

One of the sad results of th¢ Covid pandemic has been the loss, for now. of our massiTrely

move to I lam. W¢ have a massiTre challenge ahead to bring our voung families back to
collective worship when the lockdo1￿￿ ￿strActionS are fllmlly rel&xed.
Rebuilding our finances will also be a challenge as we move forward and it r¢mains to be
seen whether li'e can meet the challenge of a 20?0 Parish Share assessment of £60:180,

the PCC has agreed to Eneei for no￿,.
Our liquid funds, after excluding the Parish Hall N'alue. total £20.602 [see pages A6 & A8].
