## **Vicar's Report** 

2023 was another big year as we have been finding out what this post-Covid world is like.  Growing instability in the world around us has reminded us more and more that we need to grow our roots down into God, his word and his promises.  Rooted in him, we have started to step out again in reaching out into the local community and with many of our groups returning to meeting in person. 

In our preaching during 2023, we continued in Luke and Acts, as well as series in Zephaniah and Philippians, and thinking about the end of the story of Abraham. We’ve also started doing monthly extra services alongside our 10:30 Sunday services – midweek traditional communions, evening Taize and Praise & Prayer services. 

With staffing, we bid farewell to Nicki, who returned to the USA, and were joined by Demi as our Families Discipleship Worker. 

One highlight of the year was being joined by Bishop Paul for our church Away Day, and then for the baptisms of India and James in the summer. 

It has been a wonderful privilege to continue to serve alongside you in the work of the gospel – St Jude’s is a brilliant church to be a part of. 

Many thanks also to those who make my job so much easier by their continued help and service in so many different ways in the life of the church! 

Let’s keep on going in Jesus through 2024, and keep on growing in him, both in numbers and in depth of knowledge and discipleship!

**PCC Report**

PCC members are appointed as set out in the Church Representation Rules. All church members are encouraged to join the Electoral Roll and stand for election to ensure a spread of ages and views. The PCC is responsible for co-operating with the Vicar in promoting the mission of the church, pastoral, evangelistic, social and ecumenical to the wider community. It has responsible for the maintenance of the fabric and fixtures of the church and halls complex and any other properties held solely or in trust for the PCC, and also oversees the employment of church staff. The PCC is responsible for ensuring that Health & Safety, Safeguarding and other policies are in place and are adhered to. 

Since the last APCM the PCC has met six times on site (at the time of publishing with a meeting in March and April scheduled).  We also had a PCC away day in September 2022.  We begin each meeting with a Bible reading and a time of prayer, as we seek to discern God’s will for us here at St. Jude’s. Discussions at recent meetings have focused mainly on the staffing; the Church vision and high level objectives; the impact of the Covid and energy prices on our finance; ideas for the improving the technology resulting in applying for a faculty to upgrade our equipment to allow us to stream services more effectively and provide screens to improve visibility in the church; Youth and Children’s Work and potential funding / ideas.  Meetings are supportive and different views are listened to and respected. 

PCC members are your representatives, so if you have any issues you would like to raise please speak to one of the wardens or any PCC member. The agenda and minutes of meetings are posted on the notice board at the back of church and are sent out on the Monday Mail – please keep yourself up to date, have a look at them and let us know your views on what is happening. 

Amy Hanlon continued her role of PCC Secretary.  Five PCC members have now completed  their  term  of  office:  Natalie  Hooper,  Bev  Norman,  Joy  Pyatt,  Prue Napthine and David Jackon.  One member, Daniel Hanlon, has resigned.  Thank you to Nat, Bev, Joy, Prue, David and Daniel for giving your time and talents to serve God and the people of St Jude’s.  Phyllis Lloyd has said that she is stepping down from her Deanery Synod position.

Richard Hill has continued as Churchwarden. We ordinarily have two churchwardens, and Richard continues to do a magnificent job on his own.  However we would like someone to step up into that role and hopefully someone will want to step up and join him as Churchwarden.  If not, if you feel God calling you in that area then please do speak to John Allister or Richard Hill. 

At the APCM we will therefore be electing five people to the PCC to serve a threeyear term and one person for a one year term.   Please consider whether God is calling you to serve in this way – we need a PCC which is representative of all those at St Jude’s. 

Thank you also to all those who have helped and supported the people of St Jude’s in so many ways – spiritually, practically and pastorally – over this last year. Your readiness to help out is much appreciated. 

## **Wardens’ Report** 

Richard Hill 

It has been a delight to see the attendance in church over the last year. Livestreaming of our Sunday services have proved a blessing for those who can’t attend and the sermons are being downloaded between ten and twenty times each week. Our midweek communions continue to be well attended and they are proving popular with 20- 30 people taking part on average. New styles of worship are being tried out with Praise and Prayer evenings and Taize services. 

2023 saw Danny and Bec Marshall moving on to a new church where Danny is a curate. Nicki, our intern, left us and Demi has joined us as a Families Discipleship Worker. Paula continues as our Children’s Worker. 

A major responsibility for churchwardens is to ensure that the church building is open  and  set  up  for  Sunday  services.  Thank  you  to  Phyllis,  our  sacristan, for preparing the bread and wine for our communions; our Sunday Wardens - Eddy, Gill, Mary, Philip and Prue - and also to our teams of leaders, readers, prayers, musicians, welcomers, coffee makers, service techies and our flower arrangers for enabling us to run our Sunday morning services so well. 

I am grateful also to Geoff and Jenny who ensure that our communion wine and individual cups are kept stocked. We now offer the common cup in communion services alongside the option to have individual cups. 

Harry Tate, Harry Leyland, Audrey Cross, Beryl Butterworth, Maureen Chambers, Margaret Hopkinson and Shelia Norman came to the end of their journeys here on earth. We remember them and their faithful service with fondness and gratitude, thanking God for their example to us. 

Some of you may remember the evacuation on St Albans cathedral during a carols by candlelight service just before Christmas. That set me thinking about how we would handle an evacuation at St Jude’s.  So, sometime in September, we will find out!  The PCC has approved the establishment of a working party to plan and execute a fire drill during one of our services. We will be meeting over the summer to ensure that our fire safety policy is up to date and the Sunday wardens and welcomers know what to do in such an emergency. 

There are regular users of our halls throughout the week and party bookings on Saturdays. Amy is doing a sterling job in managing these and our hall income is very

healthy. But this fairly heavy usage takes its toll in wear and tear on the building. It is a relief for me to have Jonathan looking after the fabric of St Jude’s. Although he regularly declines to stand as churchwarden, his oversight of the buildings and the necessary improvements  and repairs  has  greatly eased the  burden  of  being a churchwarden. 

Finally, thank you to all of you in St Jude’s. Many churches are maintained by just a few people but we have so many people who are just getting on with being the body of Christ. We can rejoice that St Jude’s demonstrates Christ’s love in action every day of the week, not just Sundays. 

## **GEARS** 

Pam Mahon 

This is our group for babies and toddlers up to 4+years. We meet in the small hall and provide a range of play activities for our youngest children including a small carpeted area with appropriate toys for babies. The session involves free play, a planned bible story based on the Beginners Gospel Bible and a related craft/creative activity. We usually have a short prayer and some action songs/dancing or a simple game. 

We have two adults (one leading and the other helping) in each session working on a rota basis. If the children are settled and ready to stay on their own we encourage parents/carers to leave them and join the service but of course we will go and ask them to come back if their child is not settling. Parents and carers are welcome to stay in the session at any time with their babies and/or toddler.  Our numbers average around 4 children per session. 

We aim to introduce a simple, age appropriate teaching of the well known bible stories, to model prayer, to help the children to know they are loved by Jesus and He can be their friend. 

We hope that our young families feel welcome, included and cared for in our church life. Thank you to everyone who has helped on the rota over the past year. We would love to have another adult leading some sessions as we only have myself and Jane D currently. 

## **Pathfinders** 

**Rosemary Napthine & John Dexter** 

The Pathfinder group is for young people aged 11+ and we now meet regularly on Sunday during the service (except in school holidays). This was a change during the last year from when Joel helped us and we had to meet after the service and included a simple lunch. The change has helped stabilise the teaching.  We have a group of around 6 to 8 young people. The two oldest moved on at the end of the school year and one of them was baptised at St Jude’s last summer. Another youngster was also baptised during one of the church services. We have a core of two or three regular attenders and then the same who are less regular. We also get visitors and our Pathfinders always make newcomers very welcome. They are quite a diverse group, and their Church friendship seems important to them especially as they generally attend different City and County secondary schools. We meet under the stage if you wondered where we disappear to. The leaders are Eddie Coates, Stu Green, Rosemary Napthine, John Dexter and we welcomed Ellie Napthine onto the

team in September. Ellie and Eddie lower the age of the leaders which is important for the group who really appreciate them. We have used material called ‘Energize” which is a resource from ‘urban saints’ – Crusaders in old money! We usually have an introductory game or two and a bit of a fun challenge, then we pick up a Bible passage and try and discuss what it means to us and how it might help or challenge our week ahead. There is nearly always good engagement and they are a lovely group to teach and spend time alongside. We have looked at topics such as “ Being Christ like; Living for Jesus at school; Healthy lifestyles”. We have a WhatsApp group with parents so like to think we have a good relationship with the families too. This same group make up the majority of the witness group and so they also meet on a Thursday evening for a fun time with Eddie, Ellie and Demi. 

## **Children & Families Outreach Worker report** 

**Paula Smith** 


It has been a year where things have changed so much both in my job and my personal life - throughout this verse has spoken to me. When things have been unclear it reminds me why I do what I am doing that I am here to serve and when things have been tough the verse reminds me of 

God’s faithfulness and instructs me to remember what I have accomplished with him and for him already. Here is what happened this year. 

**Boomerang!** We continue to enjoy a wide range of activities in this after school group, we have baked, crafted, played games, been on outings and completed numerous art projects, some of which are on boards in the hall, and another is part of the Easter Art Trail. I made the decision to lower the age for Boomerang! and this has resulted in increased numbers – we now have fourteen regular attendees and it is lovely. We have also added Kerry Duffy and welcomed Gill Peto back to our team of volunteers, there is still space for another pair of hands, and you would not have to commit to every week! 

**Toddlers** Each week my team of volunteers set out different play areas and ensure there is enough food prepared for snacks time. I always prepare one activity that is linked to our Bible theme and story. I have found a new resource of books that I will enjoy using, and through the network of children and youth workers also found an acrobatic resource for Bible story telling- which should be lots of fun. The children (and some of the adults) love our gathering Wiggle song! This is another group that has grown in numbers, in fact there are weeks we have to turn people away to comply with health and safety regulations. To this end we are at the point of making our session a bookable event.

**Family fun Days** There have been six of these events. The themes have included sports and games, the beach, Easter Trail Christmas and last but by no means least the Really Bright Party which is always our most popular session. The numbers have been varied at each of these according to the theme and or the weather, but we continue to draw from both our church families and the local community. 

**One off event** in the summer the church had an away day and I headed up a team of people who lead the children’s work. We use the lyrics from the song – Day by Day to deliver our three sessions. In Autumn last year I hosted a Cub troop (25+ children), who were doing their faith awareness badge. I designed a treasure hunt which helped them learn what each part of the church was called and use for. At Christmas I was approached by the school to asking if year 1 (60 children) could come and complete part of their curriculum. Demi and I told them the Christmas story and the each made a star to remind them of the visit. The teachers were impressed with my planning and preparation, and this has opened the lines of communication for more collaborative working. The idea of having teams of readers has not come to fruition as they state they already have enough readers. 

I have begun a Training course for workers in Children and youth Ministry – the modules of this are Understanding the world of children; Key skills of Christian leadership; Keeping faithful in Christian leadership. It is ideally for those new in post but I am learning lots. This course alongside having the children and youth workers network running again are already proving their worth. 

I have hosted a Thank you lunch for all my volunteers this year as without their input my work would not be possible. Likewise, I need to thank those of you who support me with looking after my foster children so I can run my sessions, and all those who hold me and my ministry in prayer please keep doing what your doing – remember Prayer is our powerful weapon! 

**Pastoral Care & Wellbeing** 

**Bev Norman** 

My role is to co-ordinate the pastoral care, this only happens so well as St Jude’s really is a community of people who are passionate about caring for each other and for those in our community/ hall users . 

Homegroup leaders support those in their groups and many other church groups who meet in our halls also provide pastoral care for those who attend. So I would like to thank everyone who supports each other by visiting, meeting people for coffee, shopping, providing meals and praying for people. Thank you for letting me know when people in our church community just need extra support or are not well and for those who respond to help often at short notice.

The Wellbeing group that now runs every Monday has enhanced our pastoral care by providing a safe space where people can support one another and if needed people can be signposted for more professional support. 

We have recently redone a notice board in the entrance hall so all hall users can access support if needed. 

I cannot summarise the last year as there is never a day goes by when someone within our community does not need support / help and each week is different.   We are all responsible for pastoral care and showing the love of Christ by caring is something we can all help with.  Please remember that it is ok to not be ok, so please make time to listen to those who need to talk and if you feel someone is not getting the care and support they need or would benefit from visits or more professional support then please let me know. 

## **Safeguarding** 

**John Allister** 

The PCC has complied with the duty to have due regard to the House of Bishops’ guidance in relation to safeguarding. It continues to remain a priority for us. In 2023, Amy Hanlon has taken on a lot of the responsibility for safeguarding administration, and we have continued to work with the diocese to monitor and improve the current situations and policies. 

Aimee Street stepped down as Parish Safeguarding Officer in January 2024 for personal reasons. We are very grateful to her for all her hard work as PSO, and would very much like someone else to be willing to take on the role! 

## **Welcomers Report:** 

**Richard Hill** 

We have a small team of welcomers who turn out regularly to offer a friendly smile and a warm welcome to everyone at the porch door. Their commitment and faithful service is an inspiration, and newcomers and visitors alike continue to comment on the warmth and friendliness they find at St. Jude’s. A smile and a word of welcome from someone at the church door can be such a highlight in a lonely person’s week and helps them to feel part of the fellowship. 

Chatting with a stranger over coffee is something we can all do too, so please continue to look out for those who look a little uncomfortable in the hall after the service and make an effort to get to know them. 

As I wrote above, the welcome team is small. This is due to people stepping down over the last year. Please speak to Amy or me if you would like to join the team. Ideally, I’d like to have enough people to ensure that a welcomer is on duty once every couple of months. 

**Home Groups                                                                                                         Simon Howard** 

I took over coordinating the homegroups in  2023 from Pam, we say a big thank you to  Pam  for  doing  for  many  years.   We  have  47  people  regularly  attending homegroups in 7 different groups, 43% of people on the Electoral Roll.  There are 4

other people attached to homegroups that are not able to regularly attend at the moment for various reasons.  5 Homegroups meet in person, 1 meets with a mix of in person and zoom  and 1 is based on WhatsApp messaging.  There is also a staff homegroup that meets on a weekly basis, when we can.  Since taking over in August 2023 I’ve been approached by 6 people for places in a group and I was able to place everyone in a suitable group.  These 6 people are a mainly people in the fringe of church (which is wonderful).  I think homegroup participation might be one of the measures of a healthy church.  PRAY: Please pray for homegroups that the Holy Spirit would be at work in people and reveal to them the need to spend more time with God. My prayer would be that  we can grow the proportion of our church that attend a homegroups significantly. 

## **My Time** 

**Bev Norman** 

My time continues to meet on a Wednesday and includes people of all ages.  We have a social time followed by a more structured discussion/ sharing time as well as a short time of prayer. 

Pre-school age children attend the group and are facilitated in the same room. We consider the children who attend to be very much part of our group and they love to share in our meals, birthdays etc. 

My Time is a space where you can have time out in a busy week or fill a slot in a lonely  week.  It  is  a  place  where  people  can  share  and  a  place  where  many friendships are made. 

Over the last year we have helped organise and served refreshments at church family events,  helped cook meals, shared many craft activities including a lot of preparation for the Art week and supported each other and church events in many ways. 

We welcome anyone who wants to come along either regularly or occasionally.

## **Fabric Report** 

**Jonathan Peto** 

We are pleased to report that all annual inspections have been carried out: the lightning conductor has been inspected, Gas safety checks on the church heating boilers, the fire extinguishers have been checked the annual PAT testing has been completed. 

In addition the five yearly fixed wiring inspection was carried out resulting in some minor rectification work

In March 2023 a quinquennial report was carried out- the urgent requirements were: 

1) Various repairs to church roof including replacing slipped tiles, clearing gulleys & downpipes and inspecting flat roof areas- this work is still outstanding. 

2) Attending to broken window panes- necessary rectification work has been completed. 

3) Chancel floor- as previously reported this is in a poor state but the PCC has agreed to defer any repairs until a long term plan is established in respect of the church. 

Apart from the usual ongoing minor repairs the main church fabric issues are: 

1) East window- following further stormy weather in June 2023 part of the stained glass in the East Window was again damaged. An insurance claim was submitted which was agreed resulting in the window being fully repaired in July 2023. 

2) Side chapel roof leak- following heavy rain it was apparent the roof was leaking. Inspection revealed some flashing repairs and repointing is required- this work was completed in April 2023. 

3) Boundary wall to northern entrance – a length of wall adjacent to the steps to the disused gate on the north side of the church had collapsed. This problem was identified in February 2023 with further damage occurring in March 2023. Church insurers agreed to pay for repairs which were completed in July 2023. 

4) Main entrance door- following increased difficulty closing the doors, the doors have been eased and the frame pinned to the stonework. Work completed February 2024. 

## **Treasurers Report**

Regular giving by Standing order accounts for 95% of the donation income of the church – regular giving was virtually unchanged compared to 2022. However there has been an impact inevitably on some church members on their ability to give due to the Cost-of-Living crisis during 2023 which has resulted in a significant drop in income in the latter part of the year. 

Hall rental income showed a small decrease to nearly £50,000 compared to 2022 following the loss of several regular bookings. 

Grants totalling just over £10,000 were received including a one-off energy support grant totalling £6,500 from the diocese. Additionally £3,000 was also received from the diocese being the first instalment supporting the costs of employing the Families Discipleship Worker. 

Overall expenditure increased as a result of several factors:

Electricity- following a 100% increase in tariffs in Autumn 2022, costs increased by £4,000. A new contract was taken out in Autumn 2023 which has reduced costs by 25% for the upcoming year. 

Cleaning costs increased by over £2,000 mainly as a result of significantly increased wage rates. 

A new hot water system costing £2,400 was installed for the hall kitchen which will reduce energy costs. 

Additionally a new fire exit door (£1,000) was installed in the kitchen and the easy access toilet had to be replaced . 

New tables & chairs including a new set of tables for the toddlers were purchased costing just over £2,000 in total. 

Five  year  fixed  wiring  test  was  carried  out  which  cost  £1,600  including  some rectification work. 

Finally a section of the church wall was rebuilt following vandalism (£1,500) but this was covered by an insurance claim. 

All the above expenditure was paid from the general fund. 

Outgiving from general funds to support missionary/charitable work is based on 10% of income excluding hall rental and grants. The PCC agreed it was a priority to maintain support especially given the financial pressures being experienced by many of these organisations. 

Parish share was paid in full for 2023 – the amount requested was discounted by 20% to reflect the work done by John Allister as Area Dean. However the amount paid increased from £61,644 to £69,024 (note the amount requested would be £86,280 without the discount). 

Following a generous donation, the main lights in the large hall were replaced by modern LED light fittings. 

A further generous donation was also received to be used for future projects. 

The overall result was a small surplus in respect of general funds which increased the reserves to £28,182 at end of 2023 - it was agreed at the April 2014 PCC meeting that the policy of St Jude’s would be to hold reserves equivalent to three months expenditure.  The  current  reserves  represent  approx.  10  weeks  expenditure (excluding Outgiving) which leaves a shortfall of approximately £10,000 against the agreed policy. 

The  property  owned  on  Kent  Road,  which  is  let  out  and  thus  treated  as  an investment, was revalued based on sales of similar properties in the area. It is estimated the property is now worth £290.000 – this was actually a reduction of £20,000 but by comparison the valuation had increased by £41,000 in the previous year.

The financial position for 2024 is very challenging- without any increase in regular income a deficit of £10,000 is the current forecast. 

The Promise Programme being held in the Spring of 2024 is therefore crucial to improve the current position. 

## **Deanery Synod Report** 

Synod met three times this year. In addition to our focus on Ministry and Mission, we were visited by Ruth Lee, the Growing Disciples Younger lead, who shared her enthusiasm for sharing the Good News with young people. James Halstead, Principal of the School of Discipleship came to talk to us about Lay Vocations, and Jean Lamb shared her vision for a deanery wide Lent/Easter trail, based on the stations of the cross, for 2024. 

At each meeting, news from around the Deanery and from Diocesan Synod is shared. We hold discussions in small groups, and we pray for each other. We receive regular reports from Diocesan Synod with Revd. Sam Hustwayte still in post as Chair, as well as our lay representatives Michael, Peter, David and Muriel continuing to serve alongside Revd. John Allister. We also circulate regular reports from General Synod. John encourages representatives to share information with their PCCs, as one purpose of Deanery Synod is to  feed information through from the diocese to the parish, and vice versa. 

This year saw a new triennium so we needed to elect members to the standing committee. We were pleased to welcome Chris Childs as Lay Chair. Sam Hustwayte continued as Secretary along with Kurt Baron as clergy rep. Lay representative Peter Fisher was joined by Kathy Hogan. There are vacant positions for both lay and clergy representatives. 

Churches in vacancy- Netherfield, Carlton, Colwick, Lambley, Gedling and Arnold continue in vacancy. Our churches in vacancy have continued their commitment to church life, with support from retired clergy and hardworking lay teams. 

The post of Deanery Treasurer is still vacant. Please consider prayerfully whether you know anyone suited to this role. Encourage them to talk to our Area Dean, John Allister. We are supported by Gary Stevenson, whose details Portia can share if a parish needs support with treasurer matters. 

Area Dean Revd. John Allister shared information about the Diocese of Goma and we agreed that if at all possible, each church would make a donation of £100 via

JustGiving. That amount would make a significant difference to a diocese with an annual budget of £20k, where ministers are unpaid and unlikely to have been educated beyond primary level.
