with the Charity CommisSiOTt. Its role is to CO•opcrat¢ with th¢ minister in promoting in the parish
th¢ whole mission of the Church. pastordl. evangelical, s￿la]. and ecumenical. DurirAg much of
2023 the parish was in interr¢gnum and was indebted to l(Kal clergy for their &ssistance in
maintaining the services. Particular thanks are duc to Canon David Faton (retired priest) and the
Reverend Neil Vigers who wer¢ supported by the ¢hu￿hwarden￿ Linda Slater and Bemard
Hawkins, and a host of local clergy. This situation changed on 24 October 2023 with the
Institution and Induction of the Revd. Pru Dulley &s Rector of th¢ United Benefice of St. Michael's
B¢tchworth and St. Mary's Buckland. The PCC has Continued throughout to meet regularly and has

Achievements And Performance
Another unprnlictable and eballenglng year as we worked towards the arrival of our new Rector.
At the begirlning of the year. we completely reP￿>te the parish profile and subvnitted this to the
Dioc¢s¢ in time to meet the deadline for publication in the Church Times etc. Meanwhilc the routine
of the church Se￿iceS was maintained with the help of a variety of l(Kal clergy. This wasn't always
easv and there w&s one week when n(pone could be foun& and a shortened service was led by
churchwardens with Liz Vahey taking the Service 2nd Lindk Slater reading a s¢rn)on prepared by
the Area Dean. We remain indebted to all those who helped take our services and particularly David
Eaton and Neil Vigets, who undertook such a large number of our service5.

St. Miehael's Church, Betchworth Parochial Cburch Council
Two applications We￿ rw¢ivcd in marc￿ and strictty timetabl￿ visits to IK)th parishes arranged for
April 12 . A successful '￿eet the Author session- held in the Church with Tammy Huf on
April 15th and the interviews themselves took Pl￿ on April 2￿. Happily. a unanimous decision
was reached by the four wardens and the Iwo ￿tron$. We were sworn to secrecy and went into
limbo waiting anxiously for the announcement of the apwinknent. By shccr giM)d fortun¢ the
Bishop of Croydon was tsking the morning servi¢¢ at Buckland on May tr. the Coronation
weekend. and she was thrilled to al￿ounCe th¢ app)inth)ent ofthe Reverend Pru Dulley &s our new
Rector.
A date WLS set for Pru's Induction and Institirtion at the I￿IDnI￿g of (ktoiw. and plans finalised
by the end of May for the DiiKese to adapt the Rcctory to suit Prn's disabled needs. Some
adaptation of the ¢hwches was a150 nece&wy as Prn wouldn't be able to mount the Steps to re￿h
thc high altar. Accordingly. a new mobile Dave altar was purchas&l and this was accommodated in
the nave along with the gift of a Steinway grand piano which Martin Hall bkd acquired from a
defvnct Walton church.
By xjvw we were also worrying about the impact the Rainwater project would have on our activities,
particularly thTee weddings due during this time. The west d￿r was blocked by scaffoldlng alld
equipment. All the Brid&s were advis¢d of the restrictions and efforts made to Obscu￿ the
affoldtn& which finally arrived at the end of July.
As we ¢ntcrgd the holiday pertod ch¢¢ks on progress at the Rectory showed that nothing had been
started and urgent rwu&s for action were m&le to the Diocese who no real problem. However,
as we were ready to start issuing invitation5 to the Induction, w¢ established th&t th¢ new stair lift
wasn't going to be installed in time foT Pru'5 arrival in mid-SepteTnbcr, making it impossible foT her
to tske up residence &8 planned. Panic calls to the Diocese reV￿led that the Bishop and Arch
Deacon were tKTrth on leave and a delay to the Induction had to ￿ negotiated with a very unhappy
Bishop's Chaplain. At this stage spirits were rdtsed by a Ptliars Event in the village hall where
"Stars in their Eyes" was produced with amazing t*rfoTmanc4s by our village folk raising yet more
funds for thc Fabric of St Michael's.
Just in time the Rainwater proje£t was completr￿ although the UDshrouding of the organ was
delayrf and the major spring cleaning organised by Pam had to be put back. Nevertheless. by
October 24th was finally set for PTU'S Induction by the Bishop of Southwark. A full church
welcomed her. and w¢ Started to admire her deterniination as She completed all the Tituals from her
wheelchair. Time to give thanks for the slopKd walkway constTUCted Fthind the organ when thAs
was installedt
So. the last two months of the year b￿rne a period of le3rning with Pru getting to grips with our
local ¢ustoms aT]d the parishes adjusting lo a PFtest (MI wheels. This pmcess CODtiDue5 and we atr
now used to moving the nave altar to make room for Prn and her wheelchair. In titne we plan to
make this easi¢r by removing some pews. but this will take time.
Once again. our knitters ¢xcelled themselves and pr(￿Uced a Christmas Tree filled with snakes and
mi¢¢ puppets. Christtn&8 this year saw a hAgh¢r attendance than recently, alld the Crib Service saw a
record attendance. We EK)pe this is a welcome trend which augers well for the future. Needless to
say. we are still in need of extra volunteers to augment the many folk who do $0 mu¢h for St

3.1 Moving pews
It seems removing the front two ￿wS is f¢asible. there is no appBr¢nt servicc routes so the
main work would be making g(M)d to the tiled floor. We debafrd leaving the back of one
pew as a bwksh¢lf attd kncclcr rdcl but this is tricky to get stability and would mean a new
matching timkr installatiOTt of carving up one if the redundant pews. My view is it is better
to l¢av¢ the pew open as the current arrdngemenL
I question if removing two pew5 really addresses the i&%ue of cre&ting an open
multi functional Spa￿ for muslcjmeetin￿artS etc. There is a risk the area becomes just
wider circulation.
I suggest we think wider and consider another two pews (4 in tirtal). I acc¢pt tbis could
create a disconnect th¢ choirlvicar and th¢ Congregation. so I propose we
investigate the ability to temporarily remove r￿s 3 & 4 for events. They would b¢ rn-fixed
in situ for th¢ majority of the time.

3.2 PernianeDt Disabled aece
Whether this is to th¢ south or west Ihis is a big project likely to require re-grnding the
external ground levels, making good and external structural work around the d(xyr and the

high risk. The works will ¢hang¢ the Iwk and proportions of one of the main enlrances of a

Flnance
This Y￿ has b¢¢n another challenging year for the church financiaIty. Whilst we have once again
paid in full our parish pledge of £34,034 (2022: £33.704). th¢ General Fund saw an excess of
expenses over income of £3.482 (2022: surplus incom¢ of £5.500). tast year, we benefitted from a
legacy of £5.000. where&s there wcr¢ llolle such this year. and our expenses continue to rise a5
inflation continues to bite. In additioffj we ttMnsf¢rred £IO.000 to the Fabric Fund to help pay for the
substontial rrM)f repair project we have undertaken. m¢anin8 the general fund at 31 December 2023
showed a depl¢ted balance of £68,597.
The roof repair work u5cd all the ￿sOurceS in our Fabric Fwid and moT¢. W¢ hope to receive a
further grant of SOEue £19.000. which will mean that the fund will b¢ close to break-even: currentlyj
