Churchwardens’ Report

We were sorry to see David Tembey rere in July. His incumbency has been appreciated by many in Marske and his popularity was obvious at his rerement lunch. We have been grateful to Lynne for her contribuon to the work of the Parish.

We have made a slow but sure recovery from the effects of the COVID pandemic. Aendance at services has been maintained and we have been fortunate that so many rered clergy have come to our aid. It is thanks to them that we have been able to maintain most of our services. It was regreable that the Monday evening service was cancelled but it will be reconsidered when our new Priest in Charge is in posion.

We have had more than our usual number of bapsms in 2022 as so many babies were unable to be bapsed during the pandemic. We have had a plethora of double bapsms – usually a 2 year old and a younger sibling. It has been good to be able to celebrate weddings and host funerals again.

The schools have made a return and Messy Church made a slow start but now has increased numbers. We have hosted concerts again – starng with our friends from Rockulele. Coffee sessions and ‘Tea on the Lawn’ are back. All these increase social interacon and boost well being.

The pandemic had an adverse effect on the White House as groups could not meet and we could not hold fund raisers for our improvement plans. By the end of the year we had the money to complete the renovaons and new groups were starng to book the rooms.

A vacancy in the Parish can be a demanding me for Churchwardens but we have been supported by a loyal congregaon. We thank all who have supported us this year and are confident that you will welcome our new Parish Priest as he or she seles into a new era for St Mark’s.

PCC Secretary’s Report for 2022 Calendar Year

St Mark’s PCC has the responsibility of co-operang with the incumbent in promong the whole mission of the Church – pastoral, evangelical, social and ecumenical within the ecclesiascal parish and has maintenance responsibilies for St Mark’s Church, for the Church Instute known as the White House, and for St Germain’s Tower.

Membership of PCC

Church Wardens

Mrs Sue Sotheran and Mr Peter Tinkler

Elected Representaves

The following succeeded the 2021-2022 commiee in May 2022.

Dr Janet Dack, Mrs Elizabeth Fox, Miss Joan Hornby, Mrs Laura Maskery, Mrs Margaret Tinkler, Mrs Sue Thompson, Mr Graeme Cox, Mr Andrew Fox, Mr John Ridgway,

Mrs Clare Marshall. Mr Jonathan Bragg, Mr Jack Thomas

Representaves on the Deanery Synod:

Dr Janet Dack, Mr Jack Thomas.

The PCC

The PCC met on six occasions and has been occupied with the following:-

Vacancy

The major event of the year was the rerement of Rev David Tembey in June. He served here for seven years, extending his service for a year. We could not have asked for a more effecve and well liked occupant of this post at such a crical me. His final service was at Pentecost on June 5th .

The Church Profile was completed and sent to the Archdeacon in mid September and forwarded to the Bishop. The next step is for interviews and an appointment to be made.

Our Parish Representaves on the interviewing panel are Mrs Laura Maskery and Dr Janet Dack. The PCC wished the post to be adversed naonally in the Church Times to maximise the number of applicants.

An Open Week was held in the week prior to David’s rerement (May 21st -June 3rd ) was based on the theme ”The Church and the Community”

Covid

The Liturgy has been restored to its pre-Covid form except that the congregaon connue to take communion queuing below the chancel steps. Almost all other aspects of church life are as they were before Covid, including the recommencement of bapsms at 11.30 on Sundays following the 9.30 Eucharist.

”Living Christ’s Story “

The Diocese remains extremely stretched financially and may have used its reserves by 2027. “Living Christ’s Story” is a diocesan iniave to test how costs can be cut while sustaining the Church’s ministry.

The PCC reported its views and concerns last year. The Diocese has yet to finalise any plans for a restructuring of the parishes within the Deanery.

Stained Glass window

The stained glass window approved last year in memory of Alan Beadnall, a former reader at St Mark’s, was installed in the plain light of the Memorial Chapel on the first Sunday of Lent. The window was donated by his family.

Repairs to the Tower.

We have raised £10,000 towards the £107,000 needed to repair the tower. We do not yet have sufficient funds to be able to aract grants. As we have always paid our full amount of our Free Will Offering St Mark’s should get a worthwhile contribuon from the diocese.

Remembrance Sunday

We reverted to the pre-Covid pracce of holding a Church Service, preceded by a parade, which was connued at the cenotaph for the laying of wreaths and the reading of the names of the Fallen. Rev Graham Pacey conducted the service. A trumpeter from Marske band played the Last Post and Reveille. The Scouts and Guides were present.

Armisce Day

A short service was held at St Germain’s at 11 am by Rev Bruce Harrison and was well aended. Pupils from Errington School took part in the event.

Links with the schools

Errington School held their Christmas service at St Mark’s.

Links with the community

Reindeer Night this year without the reindeer! - was held on Thursday 8th December to coincide with the Marske Community Partnership event. The church was open the public, goods and refreshments were sold and singing of Christmas music was led by “Soundwaves” Saltburn, Marske and New Marske Parish Council held their Carol Service here this year. Music was provided by Marske Junior Brass band and the O’Dell singers.

Rockulele performed two concerts, one in summer and another just before Christmas. Redcar Food Bank Basic items of food have connued to be donated regularly at St Mark’s for onward delivery.

Parcels for Eastern Europe. Gi filled shoeboxes for families in Eastern Europe were again donated by members of the congregaon for onward transport.

We have connued to provide gis for the women’s refuge at Easter and Christmas.

Independent Examiner’s report To the PCC of St. Mark, Marske-in-Cleveland

Well how quickly has that year gone, or is it just me geng older!?

I connue to produce the magazine with the same enthusiasm that I started with and hope that you all sll enjoy the content.

I report on the accounts of the charity for the year ended 31[st] December 2022 which are set out in the preceding 2 pages

Responsibilities and basis of report

The success of the magazine is down to all you contributors and the kindness of people allowing me to use their brilliant photographs. We have a tough year ahead with the Tower repairs, however if we all pull together we will get there.

As the charity trustees you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (‘the Act’).

I report in respect of my examination of the charity’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the Act and in carrying out my examination I have followed all the applicable directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.

Thank you for your connued support, don’t forget to send your recipes.

At the harvest fesval the children brought food gis. We had a stall at the church bazaar. The children joined in the carol service, and both read.

St. Mark’s Ladies’ Fellowship

Although our numbers have dwindled these last two years, we sll have a loyal group of members who aend out meengs.

We are trialling having a coffee and chat meeng on the first Wednesday during the summer months. Hopefully some of the lapsed members will aend.

Our AGM will be held on 17[th] May.

Marske Bellringers

This year we have been pleased to welcome four new recruits. Our recruits made such good progress that they were able to join our ringing for Queen Elizabeth II’s Jubilee. Later we rang all eight bells, half muffled, for the Queen’s death. All our ringers are back aer COVID restricons and we connue to ring every Sunday and pracce every Monday evening.

Mothers’ Union

Aer our AGM in January last year, we connued to be run by Commiee holding a Monthly - Prayer Group (1[st] Monday 11am) and Main Branch Meeng (2[nd] Wednesday 1.45pm in White House).

In April we held our Lent Service in Church (kindly led by Rev David Tembey).

It was our special ‘Wave of Prayer’ Service in May at the close of which we made a presentaon to our ‘soon to be rering’ Vicar and his ‘lovely wife Lynne’.

In July we held a Jubilee Strawberry Tea with entertainment and on August 9[th] a Service for Mary Sumner Day was held, followed by Aernoon Tea - the two events raised £450 for Mothers Union charies.

During the 16 Days of Acvism Against Gender Violence (end November/December) some members observed the 3 mins silence at 1pm on Global Day and then on 3[rd] December held a Vigil in the Square with banners and handing out leaflets followed by a short Service in Church.

Throughout the year we regularly supported the local Women’s Refuge along with members of our Church congregaon at Easter and Christmas.

Sadly, during the year we lost two of our longstanding members – Bey Smuk & Freda Rowlands (each with over 65yrs service).

We now have a total membership of 38 which includes some ‘Indoor Members’, however due to age/illness many are now finding it difficult to get along to meengs so aendance at Branch Meengs has connued to be lower than before Covid.

The Electoral Roll Statistics

Since the last update in MAY 2022 we have had 6 deleons

To date as of the 28TH JAN 2023

We now have a total of 160 people on the Parish Electoral Roll

132 who are resident within St. Mark’s Parish and 28 who reside outside the Parish.

David Dack

Electoral Roll Officer

I have welcomed Sue Thompson who has offered to support me with this role.

Due to changes made by the Church of England, all Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) now need to be renewed every 3 years instead of 5 years, so all new checks will be completed within the next couple of months. These checks will be for all Church Leaders, PCC Members, Church Wardens, Sunday Club Leaders, Messy Church Leaders, Choir Master and all other members responsible for regular acvies with children and vulnerable adults.

Carol Anderson & Sue Thompson

Child Protecon and Safeguarding Representave

St. Mark’s Choir

The Choir leads the worship at the 9.30 Sunday Eucharist and at services marking the major events of the Church Year. The music is deliberately varied in style so as to accommodate a range of musical tastes within the congregaon. We aim to sing a short choral item at some 9.30 Eucharist services and at all major fesvals.

Throughout 2022 the choir have sung and pracsed as we did before the outbreak of Covid days.

The Nine Lessons and Carols service went ahead as usual together with some guests and some former members of the choir singing. This service was well aended despite our (then) disfunconal heang sytem. A surprisingly large number of the congregaon were not regular aenders at St Marks.

St Mark’s is fortunate in having a small core of very loyal singers who aend almost all pracces and services. We are only a small choir and every voice really counts. At press we have ten singers. N.B WE NEED RECRUITS IN ALL VOICES in order for us to fulfil our role at St Marks. The ability to read music is useful but not essenal. We have just one short (enjoyable) pracce on Monday morning , and sing at one Sunday service - not much more commitment than is made by most regular members of the congregaon already. The presence of a Choir however cannot be taken for granted.

The White House

This year the lights have been replaced and we have new curtains across the back of the main hall. Blinds have been fied in the smaller hall. The driveway has had a thorough clean. We should have enough money in the fund to pay for decorang inside and out and it is hoped that decorang will be completed in the first months of 2023.

The improvements to the building have taken longer than ancipated due to the effects of the pandemic. The end is in sight for our fund raising. It has been good to see new groups using the building and it is hoped that this increased interest will connue.

Friends of St Germain’s

We have connued to meet on a weekly basis to work in the churchyard over the year. Storms in April caused damage to the perimeter fence. It was causing an obstrucon to an adjacent property, so we removed the broken fence and vegetaon which was taken away by the council. A new secon of fence was erected, and volunteers completed the repair by applying preservave to the new wood.

Bulbs were provided by the council which we planted in some of the graves with a grass base. This makes grass cung easier for the council. Two enclosed areas containing graves had become very overgrown so we cleared the plants, put

down membrane and laid gravel. It has greatly improved the appearance and has remained free of vegetaon.

Later in the year the small entrance gate post was replaced, and the gate re-hung. A new fastener was fied to the large gate. The entrance in the corner of the churchyard needs a new post and the gate needs repairing. The perimeter fence had become unstable due to a broken post. This has been stabilised but needs the post replacing as a permanent repair. The bin store has been repaired and re-installed outside the perimeter fence by the council following our request.

The Remembrance Day service took place with Errington school pupils reading the roll of honour.

Marske Fishermen’s choir lead the Christmas carol event in the churchyard. This was well aended and donaons to our group were gratefully received.

Children’s Society

The Annual emptying of the House Boxes started in October, and aer a slow return of the boxes to Barbara Fishpool, Barbara was able to bank to the Children's Society £562.12,

which was a lovely amount. If you want, or know of anyone who would like a box at home, please get in touch with Barbara, or any church officer.

We must thank Barbara for all her hard work.

Chrisngle

The Chrisngle Service was held on Sunday 11th December 2022. It was led by Reverend Bruce Harrison, with Ann in charge of the music. The sum of £456.23 was raised and sent off to The Children Society on Monday 12th December.

A coffee morning was held in the White House in October to raise the funds needed to buy the oranges, sweets, and things to make the Chrisngles.

So, thank you to all who helped in any way at both these events. We couldn't do it without your help and kindness.

Sue Beach

Messy Church

COVID affected our numbers very badly and we were obliged to cancel a couple of our meengs in the spring. Since the summer we have welcomed our regular members back and have seen new families join us.

In the autumn we concentrated on New Testament stories - 'Calling the disciples', 'Feeding the five thousand', 'The wedding in Cana' and 'Invitaons to the party'. Our aernoon ends with tea together.

Our younger members always have something to take home with them, usually a cra, because they will have eaten the food acvity. Thank you to our team of leaders who create an aernoon of fun and learning for our families.
