PCC Secretary’s Report for 2021 Calendar Year

St Mark’s PCC has the responsibility of co-operating with the incumbent in promoting the whole mission of the Church – pastoral, evangelical, social and ecumenical within the ecclesiastical parish and has maintenance responsibilities for St Mark’s Church, for the Church Hall known as the White House and for St Germain’s Tower.

Membership of PCC - As elections could not be held the membership of the PCC has continued during 2021 as for 2020 viz:-

Church Wardens Mrs Sue Sotheran and Mr Peter Tinkler

Representatives on the Deanery Synod Elected Representatives

Dr Janet Dack Mrs Elizabeth Fox Miss Joan Hornby Mrs Clare Marshall Mrs Margaret Tinkler Mrs Sue Thompson Mrs Jean Wardell Mrs Laura Maskery(co-opted) Mr Jonathan Bragg Mr Graeme Cox Mr Andrew Fox Mr John Ridgway

Covid - After Epiphany on January 6th 2021 it was uncertain whether services could recommence by Lent or Easter. In the event, the annual Easter Day dawn service, very well attended, was held at St Germain’s on the 4th of March and was immediately followed by 9.00am Easter Eucharist at St Mark's with the congregation socially distanced, wearing masks, but without any singing. This single 9.00am Eucharist continued until Sunday October 3rd (Harvest Festival) when St Mark's returned to having an 8.00am said and a full choral 9.30 am service. (Choir distanced and singing masked and congregation masked.) The Vicar continued to administer communion using dipping and tongs from the common cup in the nave with the congregation queuing, Baptisms recommenced at 11.30 on Sundays,

There was a full set of well attended services over the Christmas period :- The Christingle Service which raised money for the Children's Society in addition to that raised in donation boxes; The Carol Service at which Rod Pearson and Debbie Reed assisted; The Crib Service on the afternoon of Christmas Eve; the “midnight” service on Christmas Eve, 8.00am and 9.30am Eucharist on Christmas Day and Eucharist on St Stephen’s Day which, this year, fell on a Sunday.

The PCC - The PCC met on four occasions and once on Zoom and has been occupied with the following:-

” ' ” Living Christ s Story - The Diocese is extremely stretched financially and will have used its reserves by 2027 unless costs can be cut. “Living Christ’s Story” is a diocesan initiative to test how costs can be cut while sustaining the Church’s ministry.

The PCC have considered the themes set out by the diocese :-

a) Growth and Discipleship b) Organising Ourselves. c) Financial Challenges. d) Ministerial Reshaping. and reported its views.

The PCC found it very difficult to be positive about the major restructuring of the Anglican Church in this area implied by “Living Christ’s Story” document particularly as it could lead to the number of parishes and priests being reduced.

We should know the diocesan conclusions in February 2022 at a Synod meeting at St Peter’s Redcar at which the Bishop will be present.

Repairs to the Tower - It is estimated that repairs to the tower will cost £107,000. We do have sufficient funds to be able to attract grants. As we have always paid our full amount of our Free Will Offering, St Mark's should get a worthwhile contribution from the diocese.

Confirmation - Bishop Paul confirmed our four candidates, three of them adults, at St Marks on Sunday 7th of November.

Public Address System - Graeme Cox has renovated our 20 year old PA system and it can be used in church and for outside services. No other devices must be attached, apart from a microphone.

Armistice Day - A short service was held at St Germain's and was well attended. Pupils from Errington School took part in the event.

Remembrance Day - There was a parade starting at 10.30am from Meadow Road. Marske Brass Band were not present this year. We were unable to have the usual service inside St Mark’s as it would have been unacceptably crowded .

The Vicar held a 15 minute service at the cenotaph at which prayers were said and the Vicar spoke. The names of the Fallen were read, and wreaths were laid. A trumpeter from Marske band played Last Post and Reveille. The Scouts and Guides were present.

An unusually large crowd spilling off the pavements well over onto the green area opposite the cenotaph listened attentively to the service. The public address system restored by Graeme Cox enabled everyone to hear clearly. The Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council provided very effective traffic control.

Links with the schools - Harvest was celebrated with Errington School. Their Christmas service could not be held in St Mark's as planned, the Vicar however attended a service in school.

Concerts - There has been only one concert held in St Mark's this year - A concert of Christmas music given by The White Rose Singers which proved to be a very enjoyable and appropriately festive occasion.

Reindeer Night - St Mark’s hosted the reindeer at the Marske Community Partnership event and opened the church for the general public. Refreshments were served.

Redcar Food Bank - Basic items of food have continued to be donated regularly at St Mark's for onward delivery by Kevin and Elizabeth Wass.

Parcels for Eastern Europe - Gift filled shoeboxes for families in Eastern Europe were again donated by members of the congregation for onward transport.

The White House - See separate Report

- His Royal Highness The Prince Philip Duke of Edinburgh:

A memorial service was held in St Mark's on the evening of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Funeral in April. It was attended by local Councillors and our Member of Parliament.

(Honorary secretary to the PCC)

Vicar’s Report

I look back on 2021 with mixed feelings. A fresh Covid lockdown began in January and it was back to filming reflections on Facebook and zooming meetings. Funerals continued, but baptisms and weddings were again postponed. I took the decision to postpone my retirement for a year from June in the hope that that would be enough to see the church back to normal operations and began the meetings and paperwork that that entailed.

With Lynne’s help we prepared Lent bags which we delivered to as many of the congregation as we could so that, at least, they could observe Lent in their homes with aids.

It was a relief to get back to services on Easter Sunday: the sunrise service at St Germain’s was well attended but we had only the one service in church at 9am. This service was to continue until 3 October when we finally reverted to 8am and 9.30am. The Wednesday morning service began again on 14 April but it was not until November 1 that we felt confident enough to begin Monday evening services.

Living Christ’s Story began in earnest and the change in the marriage laws came into effect; weddings and baptisms began to trickle back and we ran confirmation classes during the summer. The new Head at Errington School, Sarah Rule, reached out to us with a view to increasing church involvement in school and this was gratefully accepted. We have had some fun times together and have been exploring the Christian faith in different ways. During the year Sue was beavering away on the White House improvements and was successful in a number of grant claims so that the work did not act as a drain on church finances. And we managed to celebrate Christmas as we used to do; Covid has not gone away, but we are having to live with it and try and get on with our lives as best we can.

I could not have gone through the year without my lovely wife Lynne, who was unwavering in her love and support despite the year being incredibly difficult in that her lovely mum died and we sold Lynne’s childhood home.

The support of everyone in church for me and for each other was a blessing and enabled so much to be done despite the difficult circumstances. Thank you and God Bless.

This year we have been ruled by COVID restrictions, with uncertainty and caution. It was good to get back to a more normal routine at the end of the year. We are indebted to Vicar David for the way he has lead us through the year.

Pew cushions, ordered before the pandemic, are now in place and being appreciated.

We have continued to support our regular charities including, Children’s Society, Farm Africa, Crisis appeals and USPG. Church members have given generously to the food bank. Despite the time that the church was closed we still sent 510.3kgs, we thank Kevin Wass for his regular deliveries on our behalf.

We thank all who give of their time and talents to St Mark’s – flower arrangers, choir members, brass cleaners, stewards, welcomers, coffee makers and all those who help to make St Mark’s a welcoming and supportive community.

Churchwardens

All Disclosures and Barring Service (DBS) checks and relevant training for St Mark’s members who are responsible for regular activities with children and vulnerable adults have been completed and are up to date.

No safeguarding issues have been reported this year.

Child Protection and Safeguarding Representative.

We had a total of 171 (145 residents and 26 non residents) in OCTOBER 2020 when I last reported.

To date as of the 12th JANUARY 2022 we have had 8 deletions (7 Residents 1 Non Resident) and 3 additions, giving us a total now of 166 (141 residents and 25 non residents).

If you wish to be included on the electoral roll or wish to amend any details, I would be grateful if you would complete a form, a supply of which are at the back of the church or see Sue! Thankyou.

Parish Magazine

I have been editing the magazine for approximately 18 months now, and I am still enjoying doing it.

Thanks must go to Tony Galloway for all the work he did prior to me. It is not easy filling 10 or 12 pages (not counting the regular information pages), plus the next month comes round very quickly! I try to present a balance between church and community and hope I achieve this.

Encouraging people to send articles is a great help, as is Parish Pump and having a cousin in Manchester who produces his church magazine.

I am aiming to fill all the advertising slots, before the next millennium.

Keep your articles and recipes coming.

This year the bell ringers have been pleased to be able to ring for weddings again. During lock down some of our members used a special computer system to keep up with change ringing. COVID restrictions have prevented three of our regular members from ringing and we hope they will be back with us soon. We have managed to return to ringing for most Sunday morning services but on six bells rather than on all eight. We will look to recruiting more ringers in 2022.

The Children’s Society

It was lovely this year to be able to hold our Christingle in Church, on Sunday 12th December 2021, and well attended, with safety in all our minds. Rev David Tembey lead the service, with Ann helping out with the music.

We were able to send the excellent sum of £542.13 to The Children’s Society, this was banked directly to them.

Once again, we held a coffee morning in the White House to raise the funds for the oranges etc for the service. Many thanks to all the people who helped in any way to these events. Special thanks go to Sue Sotheran for all her help.

The Annual emptying of the House Boxes started in October, and after a slow return of the boxes to Barbara Fishpool, Barbara was able to bank £574.24 to the Children’s Society in December.

So, a big thank you to you all for this big effort. Many thanks to Barbara for all her work.

If you want, or know of someone who would like a box for home or any other place, please get in touch with Barbara or any Church Officer.

We started our meetings again in September with a welcome evening. We met in the big room (White House) so we could social distance and we wore our masks.

We held our 65th birthday party in November, at the Zetland Hotel. It was a happy event as always.

Thankfully things are a little easier now and we look forward to more members re-joining us.

(Chairlady)

The White House

It has been difficult to raise funds during the COVID crisis as several planned events had to be cancelled. However generous donations from grant holders and church members, along with the sale of masks and cakes, has ensured a steady income.

This year we have been able to replace the kitchen, thanks to a legacy from Brian Race. Another part of the roof had to be replaced – all our flat roofs are now watertight and insulated. It has not helped our progress as we have had to spend over £20,000 on roof repairs.

It is good to see the building in use again. The new floors fitted in December 2020 means that the standard of cleanliness can be improved.

Instructions have been issued for new lights in the two halls and a new ‘stage’ access in the main hall, as we have the money for that. Hopefully the final stages – decoration of the halls and corridor as well as new disabled access can be completed in 2022.

Facebook - St Mark’s Church, Marske-by-the-Sea

Our group has met each week, weather permitting, to help keep the churchyard tidy for visitors and those tending family plots. We aim to keep the interment plots tidy of weeds and dead flowers for those who are unable to regularly tend them. Overgrown vegetation has been cut back from the perimeter wall. We have had a few kind donations from families who live out of the area or cannot manage. Some older graves have been cleared and membrane and stones laid to make maintenance easier.

The commonwealth graves were prepared for the Remembrance Service which was well attended by forces veterans, local residents and children from Errington School who presented the roll of honour.

Local schools have explored the churchyard as part of their curriculum studies.

Visitors from further afield show appreciation and interest in our well loved landmark.

We planted more daffodil bulbs, donated by RCBC.

We cancelled our annual Christmas songs/carol event, led by Marske Fishermen’s Choir. We hope to host a fund raising event this year.

During 2022 we hope to focus on clearing overgrown graves. Essential repairs are needed to gates and to re-instate the information board.

We have a Facebook page to distribute information.

We were unable to meet in church during lockdown, so we delivered activities to the children on a regular basis. These included: Making chain links for the colours of the church year. The children looked for crosses when out or at home that we made into posters for our board.

Activities for Palm Sunday, Easter, Ascension Day and Pentecost were delivered.

We coloured leaves on a tree as a weather record from the start of the school summer holidays up to Harvest Festival when we held our first meeting in church and displayed them on our board.

We gave print outs of various Bible stories.

We contributed to the church magazine.

We had a table in August for tea on the lawn to showcase what we do.

We took part in the Carol Service in December. The children were given Christmas presents.

The Choir aims to lead the worship at the 9.30 Sunday Eucharist and at services marking the major events of the Church Year. The music is deliberately varied in style so as to accommodate a range of musical tastes within the congregation. We aim to sing a short choral item at some 9.30 Eucharist services and at all major festivals.

During 2021 the choir did not meet at all until the end of September and on October 3rd(Harvest) we sang our first Eucharist since March 15th 2020 and then continued, properly distanced, for the rest of the year - something we have found to be quite difficult.

The Nine Lessons and Carols service went ahead as usual with some guests and some former members of the choir singing, and with the assistance of Rod Pearson and Debbie Reed in playing.

St Mark’s is fortunate in having a small core of very loyal singers who attend almost all practices and services. We are only a small choir however, and every voice really counts. At press we have ten singers. N.B WE NEED RECRUITS IN ALL VOICES in order for us to fulfil our role at St Mark’s. The ability to read music is useful but not essential. We have just one short (enjoyable) practice on Monday morning and sing at one Sunday service - not much more commitment than is made by most regular members of the congregation already. The presence of a Choir however cannot be taken for granted.

Since our last report we have learned that Jim Pitt who until just a few years ago had been a fixture in the choir for several decades, had passed away, aged 82. He, and his lovely tenor voice, will be remembered with great pleasure and affection.

Mothers’ Union Report

The branch continues to be led by committee. Over the year we have held a Wave of Prayer Service in May and on 9th August celebrated Mary Sumner Day with a service followed by afternoon tea with donations raising £250.00. In September a further £150.00 was donated to Mothers’ Union appeals.

Our meetings on the second Wednesday of the month at 1.45pm in the White house resumed in September and we have enjoyed renewing our fellowship. As yet we are not holding evening meetings or house groups but prayer group on the first Monday at 11.00am has resumed.

A planned vigil for the 16 days of Activism Against Gender Violence had to be cancelled because of a severe storm. We continued to support the Women’s Refuge and donated gifts at Easter, Harvest and Christmas.

Cissie Graham a long serving and much loved member, Betty Smuk and Kath Watson have died this year. Irene Pollitt is a new member and our Membership now totals 45. We welcome visitors to all of our meetings.

Our members are most grateful to our Vicar and fellow member, Rev. David Tembey, for his support, especially with Services, and give thanks that we have been able to meet together in fellowship and prayer once again.

(for Committee)

Messy Church Report

Because of the pandemic we have been unable to hold Messy Church for over 18 months, but at the end of November we got together again and were able to welcome our families back with a service based on Advent thinking about the stresses of preparing for Christmas as well as the joys of looking forward to this special season. We enjoyed worshipping together, singing and all of the creative activities as well as sharing a meal.

At present we are considering holding messy church on fewer occasions over the year and are trying this with our next service planned for lent 2022. We ask for your prayers that God will guide us as we go forward with this trial.

Many thanks go to all of our Messy Church leaders and especially to Rev David Tembey for his stories and teaching.

We look forward to another year of worship with Messy Church and pray for God’s blessing and guidance on this part of our outreach to families.
