## **Trustees’ Annual Report for the period** **From 1 September 2020 Period start date To 31 August 2021 Period end date** ## **Charity name: Rugby and Daventry Methodist Circuit** ## **Charity registration number:1132523** ## **Objectives** To support the local Methodist Churches in their mission of:- The teaching of Christianity through sermons, courses and small groups. The resourcing of pastoral work including visiting the sick and bereaved. Promotion of Christianity through services and interaction with the local community. ## **Activities** Three ordained ministers have been appointed to oversee the teaching and pastoral work in the local churches and to guide the local churches in their service to their local community. Grants have been awarded for specific projects for the benefit of the local communities where the churches have a particular calling and expertise. Loans are also given for improvement to properties in the care of the churches and to churches experiencing short term needs as a result of Covid-19 pandemic.. The Trustees have regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit ## **Achievements and Performance** Grants have been awarded by the Circuit to local churches for work amongst people with dementia in Lutterworth, for work with Children and Young people in Rugby and Daventry. Much work is carried out in Newbold, Long Lawford and Brownsover, where there is significant deprivation, to support the communities and this work is recognised by the local Council and the Police and Crime Commissioner who award grants and provide volunteers to assist the work. This work has been extended to other areas of Rugby, with the help of volunteers. This has been particularly important in the Covid-19 pandemic with people who are experiencing loneliness and isolation in lockdown. Work has been carried out in schools to provide a listening ear to students and staff. Volunteers act as chaplains to both the local prison and Police. There have been many challenges over the last year as our churches have been closed for significant periods and not able to carry out their usual work in the community, but many have found ways to reach out to those known to us in need including help with shopping, having prescriptions collected, getting regular telephone calls and news sheets. Although there has been a loss of income over lockdown the churches have not found themselves in significant financial difficulty. In May the circuit meetings of Rugby and Daventry Circuit, Market Harborough Circuit and Kettering and Corby Circuit voted to merge in order to reduce the overall administrative burden and release more opportunities for mission and work in the community. Whilst our work in the community will continue, much of the next year will be spent by the leadership teams preparing for the amalgamation to ensure that our work will continue as smoothly as possible. ## **Financial Review** The Rugby and Daventry Methodist Circuit is financially viable. The annual accounts are approved by the Circuit meeting, attached to the end of this report. Its Reserves Policy is as follows **Reserves** Proportion of annual expenditure 100000 Loans 24086 Grant commitments 16000 Removals and Manse maintenance 10541 Expected contribution to DAF 2000 Sub-total **152627 Available for Mission 54679** The proportion of annual expenditure includes £45000 income in advance, leaving £55000 which together is approximately 50% of annual expenditure. The principal source of funding is assessment on the local churches which is based on their size and ability to pay. The funds of the circuit are held in a local bank, the Church Finance Board and with Trustees for Methodist Church purpose. The main risk for the circuit is that churches will be unable to pay the assessment required to meet the budget. Some of the reserves are designated to support and in these circumstances the Trustees will need to revise their budget. ## **Structure, Governance and Management** Detailed governance arrangements are outlined within the Constitutional Practice and Discipline of the Methodist Church by order of the annual conference (CPD). Trustees are informed of relevant training provided by the Methodist Church and others. Where appropriate Safeguarding training is given.
