You give them something to eat’

Jesus’ words to the disciples, set amidst a large and hungry crowd, must surely rate among the most unreasonable and awkward of Jesus’ requests. Even if the shops had been close by and open (they were neither!), the disciples didn’t have enough money on them to buy enough food in any case.

But the Lord Jesus knows what he is doing. This inadequacy to the task, this apparent lack of resources, is I suspect the default mode for Christ’s church over the centuries. We never feel like we have quite enough- enough people to fill rotas, enough money to be able to do all we'd like to, or enough confidence and clarity to share the Good News of Jesus with others. And yet it is in this state that he sends us out, to be and make disciples. A few loaves and fish, with Jesus’ grace, was enough.

Because the Lord has given enough. We have enough money between us, as a church family, that if each of us gave sacrificially and proportionately we could be secure for a full-time Vicar in the future, multiply and grow ministry (for example, paying for a youth minister), and have enough money left over to pay for a new boiler without special fundraising. We have enough people coming to church that if everyone who was able offered themselves for service on a Sunday morning once a month, we would have no gaps on the rota. And, in Christ, we have enough to share the life-changing news of Jesus with our friends, family and neighbours. I am grateful to all those who give their time, talents and money to the Lord Jesus through our church life

And so we continue, asking God for renewed faithfulness in the day to day mundanity of Parish life, finding his grace present in every corner of our lives. It has overall been an encouraging year- Sunday attendance continues to steadily rise, and we are blessed to have new faces almost every week. In 2024 we had our first Summer Fair in many years- an enjoyable and successful day, for which many people put in a lot of hard work. I’m particularly grateful to Jenni and Richard Burton, and Sarah Burnard for coordinating this.

Away from the Parish 2024 has been a challenging year in the Church of England.

Amidst continuing controversy and confusion, the House of Bishops continues ‘full steam ahead’ with the Prayers of Love and Faith- prayers of blessing on the marriages or civil partnerships for same-sex couples. There has been no solid reassurance given to those of us who contend that these are a serious step away from the faith that we have inherited. In January, our PCC made the unanimous decision that we would not as a Parish offer these prayers. We also made the decision, in July that we would pay our Parish support fund to the Diocese via the Ephesians Fund; this makes no material difference to what we pay the Diocese (which, we must not forget, is significantly below the suggested contribution for a full-time Vicar), but ensures that we do so in solidarity with many other churches who are committed to seeing the ongoing flourishing of faithful, bible-based ministry.

In September, we welcomed Bishop Pete Broadbent to preach at Christ Church. He also came to lunch with the PCC after worship. Pete has been offering me ‘alternative spiritual oversight’ in this challenging and uncertain time. I remain on good terms with the Bishop of

Page 2

Southwark, and fully respect his legal authority, but it is a sad reality that I need to have "some kind of informal spiritual support and guidance from a senior pastor who is able to support me spiritually and pastorally. I have greatly appreciated Pete's ministry, and I know that his visit was appreciated. I remain committed to loving and welcoming all people who come to Christ Church, regardless of their sexual orientation or theology. In the autumn, we saw the resignation of Archbishop Justin Welby, relating to a historic | safeguarding case. Safeguarding has been very much front and centre in the headlines | around our national church; this has been distressing for anyone who loves and cares for our Church of England. It has of course been especially painful to those affected by abuse | of any kind, however long ago. Whilst the headlines at national level have been terrible, the | picture on the ground locally is of a national church which is continuing to improve and | tighten our safeguarding procedures. I am deeply grateful to Jean Carver and Joan Prokop, our safeguarding officers, who work diligently- and mostly invisibly- to keep our church as safe as possible.

‘Precious in the eyes of the Lord is the death of his saints’ this year, we said two painful goodbyes.

In January, Margaret Deacon died after a short illness. Margaret had been a faithful, gifted and servant-hearted member of our church for many decades. We can give great thanks that Margaret remained her friendly, gentle and witty self, up until the end. We can also give great thanks that she died knowing her saviour Jesus, and knowing the love and care of her church family.

In the autumn we lost Christine West. Christine had been unwell over the summer, but it was only relatively soon before she died that Christine learned how seriously unwell she was. I was not the only member of the church who was privileged to visit Christine at St Raphael's. It gives us great comfort to know that she died with grace and dignity, knowing and trusting her saviour Jesus. We miss Christine terribly- she had been a faithful, cheerful and serving member of the church for many decades. We can give great thanks for her life, and for her faith in Christ- she will continue to be an encouragement to us.

Yours, in Christ

Independent Examiner’s report

Accounts for the year ended 31*t December 2024

Respective responsibilities of the Trustees and the examiner

The charity's trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts and they consider that an audit is not required for the year under section 144(2) of the Charities Act 2011 (the Charities Act) and that an independent examination is needed. It is my responsibility to:

Examine the accounts under section 145 of the Charities Act

Basis of the Independent Examiner’s statement

My examination was carried out in accordance with the general directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with these records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts and seeking explanations from the trustees concerning such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required for an audit, and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a ‘true and fair’ view and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.

Independent examiner’s statement

In connection with my examination, no material matter has come to my attention which gives me cause to believe that in, any material respect:

| have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

Date: 215 March 2025

Signed:

Stephen Hendy
