**APCM 2025**

## **Sunday 11[th] May in Christ Church**

## **RECTOR’S REPORT**

As we look back over 2024 we have lots to be thankful for. I am especially grateful for the resilience shown by Zyg as he manfully guided a 9 week project to repair the church hall at Christ Church for the full nine months it actually took. And he deserves a lot of thanks for that, frankly it was a nightmare.

I am also incredibly grateful to you church community as you allowed me to take a sabbatical , having been in ordained ministry for ten years. This allowed me to do some reading around one of the big issues confronting the church of England at this time. As you know sabbaticals are a time for relaxation, refreshment, and study away from day-to-day parish ministry and it is a blessing to have been able to do that so thank you.

Sarah and I can now tell you where the best carvery Sunday lunches are between Teesside and Keithley, which ones to avoid and which ones offer the best deals.

Again as a parish we were able to offer ourselves to the wider diocese by way of hosting a candidate for ordination training as Sue Murray undertook a placement with us here in Teesside and I know many of you really appreciated her openness and enthusiasm and excitement at being with us for those six weeks. And I am happy to say that she has been recommended for training for the priesthood, and whichever parish she ends up in, they will be blessed by her ministry.

2024 was also busy again with funerals, averaging one every other week and I'm very grateful to Stewart who can pick up some of these on my behalf especially those requested on my day off.

I am also grateful to Pete Marley who oversaw the replacement of the kitchen in Christ Church hall, this is a wonderful facility for us to use as parish, but also for us to share with our community and makes the hall a viable proposition to hire. We are currently preparing leaflets to advertise this, as we purchase the last few remaining items to fully equip the kitchen. Anyone wishing to organise a pea n pie supper or harvest supper or the such like, you are very welcome to do so.

The new school year brought new faces to Big Ted on a Thursday, the coffee morning is still buzzing with a fully embedded knit and natter group, along with dominoes, bingo, and general conversation. The need for Food bank is still strong and we are grateful to the team that faithfully provide this week in week out throughout the year. Your generosity in helping to fund that is gratefully received.

The Wednesday service is has been growing, as have the Sunday morning congregations.

While reflecting back on the past three years I think it is safe to say the parish is a different place to when I arrived, the support between the churches and congregations is wonderful to see the unity of purpose and the vision that we hold

together. We have built strong foundations that will support the growth of the parish. It is our faith in Jesus and our desire to see others come to know him that empower us to offer ourselves in his service.

Vision isn't a one-off event. It is important to revisit vision every few years and adapt the vision to the new circumstances we find ourselves in, I will be speaking more about this during the APCM service on Sunday.

We continue to play a full part in the work of the Deanery hand of the Diocese. We have both of our Deanery Synod members in place which is good, I am also now elected to Diocesan Synod. And in 2024 we also welcomed our new Bishop Barry to be the new Bishop of Whitby. And I hope you will take the opportunity to meet him when he comes to the Deanery in early June. I think we have a good one.

Unfortunately I think he may well have a list of jobs that he wants me to do for him, more information about these I will share when I know exactly what I've been asked to do. Again this reflects well on us as a parish and how we are working to see the Kingdom of God grow in this place.

2024 was also a year of supporting St John’s South Bank for one Sunday a month during their interregnum. This follows on the back of supporting Ormesby for over a year during their interregnum. And I want to say big thank you that you have allowed me to support our neighbours in this way, your generosity has been greatly valued by those two churches, which has supported their Sunday worship. I know this has been a cost to you all in that you lose me for one Sunday a month and that obviously has an impact on our growth. So again I would like to thank the preaching and leading teams who support me in Sunday ministry, we are incredibly blessed with our preachers and leaders who bring so much to our worship.

And again I wish to thank each and everyone of you for all that you do at Christ Church and St. George’s, none of our ministries would run without your dedication, time and prayer support and I'm incredibly grateful to each and everyone of you for all that you do. And of course there is always more we could do, we do not always have cover for reading and intercessing on Sundays and Wednesday, we could always do with more people on the Big Ted teams to support the parent toddler group I'm sure there are opportunities to serve at Food bank, the men's ministry group ,Tuesday coffee mornings, and table top sale. If you wish to offer your time in support of our ministries please see me or even better offer yourselves to the people who lead those ministries: I am sure they will be very grateful to have you. There is a place for each of us in the work of the Kingdom and if you don't know where yours is, we are very happy to help you find your niche, where you can bring your gifts to support the work of God's Kingdom in this place.

Every blessing to each and everyone of you and again thank you for everything you do.

Rev Graham Potter

Rector, Christ Church and St George’s

## **FABRIC REPORTS FROM THE WARDENS**

## **CHRIST CHURCH**

In general the main structure of the church is in good repair, Clean and maintained, and was commented on in the latest quinquennial (2025) report - “The hardworking and conscientious PCC continue do well in their care for the church with the resources available,

Work undertaken,

1. Annual inspection of Heaters and fire Extinguishers have been carried out

2. Hall and kitchen improvements project are now complete

3. Church window, a section of one of the large window at the rear of the church, lead beading and solder joints failed resulting in a section of the window coming away, the missing selection has been covered with clear Perspex to prevent further damage and water and pest ingress, a decision needs to made how we move forward, in agreement with diocese and Architect, do we repair/restore or replace with new. quinquennial (2025) report “Consideration could be given to using coloured glass, as was done with the small windows at low level. A cost effective design could be developed.”

4. Over the last 12 months there have been a number of work/cleaning session arranged which has help keep the general housekeeping of the main building at a reasonable level.

## **Items of concern**

1. As per last year’s Fabric report the Main Church Roof – still has seen no action since the 2019 quinquennial report, we know the 2019 report was a detailed report compiled using high level access equipment, the 2025 quinquennial was not as detailed and the Architect comment “A drone might be the best way to fully explore this and could be quite useful for examining other areas of the church roof.” Shows this, however throughout the 2025 report he comments on failing and dislodged slates, bedding mortar missing, and copings needing repointed. All of these are all scored as 1 meaning Urgent or immediate action required, Again this issue needs consideration moving forward over the finical implications.

2. As per last year’s Fabric report The Heating system in church is over 25 years old (installed 1997), and the units are now obsolete and service kits are no longer obtainable. 3 heaters are isolated due to not having adequate flu systems. All other heaters continue to operate and carbon monoxide monitors install as an additional safety measure. The heating system is only going to deteriorate further with no service kits available, so will need to be replaced/renew in the near future. So planning and provision needs to be taken into consideration in the coming years.

3. Redecoration of the church ceilings is urgently needed as they are in very poor condition. (quinquennial 2025 report)

Jason Robinson, Church warden

## **ST GEORGE’S**

Internally the building is in good order.

Our Verger Keith Hill has made regular repairs and maintained lighting, fire alarms, heating and toilets throughout the year. The toilets in the main hall have been painted. A big thank you to him and Margaret for that.

The church front door has been replaced with a UPVC door, which helped stopped the drafts, and is much more secure.

The Archdeacons visitation took place during the summer with the wardens. Archdeacon Amanda completed an inventory of all the documentation we legally need as part of the Church of England. Carol did so much work to complete the collection of all the data, a big thank you to her. All silverware was checked and its documentation checked. We met all the requirements of the visitation, which will last for several years.

As wardens we were finding it hard to keep the garden tidy. As you may already know, we have a gardener willing to keep the grass tidy. This however comes with a cost. We have covered this with donations from the congregation, for which the wardens are very grateful.

## **Issues needing attention**

The heating system is inadequate, and needs replacing before another winter. It has been difficult to keep us warm through the winter. We have had the relevant team from York diocese review our heating system, and we are looking into ways to complete the work needed. A big thank you to those who made blankets to help ease the problem during the cold winter

We are trying to solve the problems with leaks in the prayer room. We are looking into resealing the large windows, and further work to discover the problem. This is likely to be very expensive.

Mike Cawley, Church Warden

## **SAFEGUARDING**

**T** he PCC has complied with its duty under section 5 of the Safeguarding and Clergy Discipline Measure 2016 (duty to have regard to the House of Bishops’ Guidance on safeguarding children and vulnerable adults).

## **TREASURER’S REPORT**

Attached as Appendix 1.

## **SYNOD REPORT**

Over the past year, Deanery Synod met three times and continues the work of becoming a local network of churches, inspiring, influencing and leading mission and ministry.

## **Tell your story**

Synod continues to have a parish tell their story to each Deanery Synod meeting.

## **Finance**

Free Will Offer —the payments to the Common Fund from parishes— Synod was informed at the February meeting that the Deanery has paid 74% of the Freewill Offer. All offers for 2025 had been received: 3 stayed the same, 2 decreased, 11 increased. The Deanery has offered £294,680, £10,893 more than 2024, but a lot less than 2020.

Cornerstone is a new national initiative, a free online learning tool for churches. Grangetown is taking part in the pilot and it is hoped this will be rolled out nationally next year. Ten parishes are using methods of digital giving.

The Diocesan Synod in July reported that their deficit is slightly better than expected. The Freewill offer is less than pre-Covid, but a higher number of vacancies mean that clergy costs are lower.

the scriptures tell us about how we can better care for the amazing world God has given us.

Stewart Shaller & Craig Flebu–Swainson

## **ELECTORAL ROLLS**

## **Christ Church**

The New Roll stands at 46.

There were 36 on the Roll last year. 3 have left, 1 went to glory. 14 new names were added.

## **St George’s**

After the renewal St George’s Electoral Roll stands at 87.

Numbers are down from last year. 1 dear brother went to be with his Lord and 9 of the people contacted regarding the renewal did not respond. Two people transferred to Christ Church Roll and 5 new names were added to St George’s. Leaving the roll 5 less than at the last revision in 2024.

## **CHURCH GROUPS’ REPORTS**

## **Big Ted**

As we look back over the last year –

- We continue to be grateful to Beacon House Group who help to set up the chairs and toys for Big Ted, and to Mike, Sue and Dave who regularly help at the end of each session to move all the chairs back and hoover. We are so grateful for their time and energy.

   - Our Facebook page continues to be a useful tool to communicate session dates, church events and upload photos of craft activities. A big thank you to Andi who does all this for us.

- We are pleased to have a new Big Ted page on the church website, to increase our online profile. Many thanks to Carol for setting this up.

- As we look forward, we hope to –

   - Continue to provide a safe sanctuary and welcoming play environment.

   - Sow seeds of faith through simple children’s worship songs, a short bible story, and a short, Christian message aimed at the adults.

   - Encourage some of our Big Ted families to attend some outreach events and All Age Worship services

   - See more people from our fellowship volunteering for any of the following helpful jobs – welcoming parents and chatting to them during the sessions and serving refreshments. We have lost one team member and now operate on the absolute minimum team numbers.

## Marian Lester

## **Christ Church Tabletop Sales**

We have now had a full year of tabletop sales within the Church itself rather than the hall and, despite our initial concerns regarding coping whilst the remedial building works and kitchen refurbishment were underway, those concerns have been completely forgotten, such has been the success of the change of venue. Our numbers have increased each month, guests have stayed until closing in most cases and everyone has had a thoroughly enjoyable morning each month - both guests and Church members. Tabletop sales will now remain in the Church and mentioning this to guests has met with great approval. It is hard to quantify the blessings the sales bring to us each month.

Our wonderful supporters have continued to supply us with good quality goods for resale, not to mention tombola prizes, and we look forward to another year of providing this invaluable outreach to the local community, many of whom have become dear friends.

Thank you to everyone who has helped in any way - we really could not do it without you all. A real team effort.

## Julia Fotheringham

## **Coffee Mornings - Christ Church**

Our Tuesday coffee mornings continue to be as popular as ever, and such a joyful part of our Church life. We welcome new guests on a regular basis, who soon become part of our lovely crowd each week, such is the friendliness of everyone. In addition to coffee and conversation, we also have dominoes and chess and of course - and most important of all - prayer and/or support for anyone in need, whatever their reason. We are always able to accommodate any request and being part of this important outreach is a wonderful blessing.

In the coming year we pray for a further increase in our numbers, particularly those from the local community who might benefit from a warm welcome and companionship in an accepting and safe environment.

Julia Fotheringham

## **Coffee Mornings – St George’s**

The Friday Coffee Mornings at St George’s have continued to attract regulars from both members of our Church family and those who don’t come to services but consider themselves part of our church. It’s a lovely hive of activity, with people enjoying a game of pool, playing cards or dominoes, doing some crafts or just enjoying the company. It’s a lovely welcoming space and it also creates a warm, friendly atmosphere for those who come to Foodbank to collect food parcels.

We are grateful to the kitchen staff who do a wonderful (usually non-stop!) job of serving bacon and sausage buns and cheese toasties to Foodbank clients and volunteers as well as those who are there for the social side.

If you’d like to join us, you’ll be very welcome!

Carol McIntosh

## **Foodbank**

We have had a busy year: in 2024, the Foodbank here at St George’s has helped 778 families, totalling a staggering 1711 people, many of whom were children. On average we now fulfil 16 vouchers per week, feeding 30 people. Staff have worked really hard but it is a privilege, and we look forward to continuing to serve in the coming year.

Alan Brunskill

## **House**

HOUSE is a mixed group of mainly 25-45 year old's. People from both churches attend. We meet each Tuesday at St Georges to fellowship together.

What do we do?

Last year we did the Spirit Filled Church course, as most home groups did. We hope to get out more for social events this coming year. Costa coffee nights are a good way of relationship building, and of course meals or drinks out together. We care for and support each other as we meet, and cover each other with prayer and keep in touch via our Facebook page. Due to a good part of the group being shift workers, we are trying to arrange our Tuesday nights together. If you would be interested in joining us, please contact me, you’ll be most welcome.

Mike Cawley

## **Ladies’ Fellowship**

We meet each week in a member’s home where we receive bible based teachings and enjoy occasional faith meals together. We enjoy outings where members are given lifts to venues when needed, garden parties, and fellowship. A

time of prayer is included where members of the congregation are prayed for in addition to our own members. Additionally, people can be prayed for via our Prayer Chain.

We look forward in prayer to our Unity Service to which all the churches in the area have been invited and pray that we may all be blessed. We pray that we will continue to have the health, strength and transport to continue in fellowship, study and other activities that we enjoy and engage in.

Pat Wetherell

## **Knit and Natter**

I could never have imagined how the Knit and Natter group would take off; it is growing weekly. We run the group in the Narthex alongside the Tuesday Coffee morning. It is a warm friendly environment, with a lovely atmosphere, we have all learnt new skills from each other and natter about all aspects of life; we enjoy refreshments together and put the world to rights - or try to! People are happy to come on their own and new friendships have been made.

Elaine Marley

## **Men’s Night**

We have met 10 times this year. Numbers are steady 12-14, some progress with some of them. We continue to encourage and to witness and see where the Lord leads us.

Alan Brunskill

## **Music Group**

As we look back over the last year –

- We’ve been able to provide live Sunday worship music in both churches.

- We continue to occasionally swap musicians around so everyone gets the opportunity to lead worship at both Christ Church and St. George’s.

- We are delighted to welcome Chris as a new singer to the group.

As we look forwards, we hope to

- Continue with the challenge of learning a new worship song every month! The congregation has risen to the challenge and we’ve all been blessed by the power of the words and music.

- Ensure we provide the best we can by practising every week.

- Grow the group by being committed to praying for new members and by providing opportunities for people to join us and develop their musical gifts.

Marian Lester

## **Powerpoint Club**

Powerpoint Club is still going strong. We had a new starter a couple of weeks ago he has settled in well.

We continue with our stories and Prayers sowing the seeds. We pray one day Father God will bring them to church.

We as leaders may never see it but we trust in the Lord.

We have had some lovely Wednesday nights out for a couple of walks. We went to see the Angel in the Cemetery they were intrigued with it of course we had to have a photo shoot. One of the walks led to a visit at the shop for treats that went down well.

We look forward to the summer with new adventures in store.

Please continue to pray for us all.

Margaret Hill

## **Prayer Space**

As a result of my Stepping Up course I have created a prayer space at the rear of Christ Church, it’s a peaceful space where people can sit quietly and comfortably to spend time with God. There is a candelabra where candles can be lit either in memory of someone or just because they choose to. There is a display of prayer cards that cover all aspects of life, that can be taken and given out to family and friends depending on their needs. It is open for all to use. Please come and make use of it.

Elaine Marley

## **Sewing Group**

We are a small group that would love to welcome more like-minded crafting people (man or woman, we don’t mind – but no power tools, please!). We meet on Tuesday afternoons and chat, drink tea, coffee or other and do our own crafts, help each other if we can, and generally have a relaxing crafting time.

We celebrate with cake, and go for afternoon teas, Christmas lunch or just generally having fun.

We charge £2 per session which we use to pay for the cost of gas and electricity costs, so we don’t make any profit.

Come along – you just might like us!

Jo Thompson

## **Small Study Groups**

## • **Anchor**

It's so good to meet together in our little house group and share the joys and sorrows of life, and what God has done for each one of us.

We meet on Tuesday 1:00 to 1:30 in the Pringle Room to learn more about the love of God and how He wants us to participate in His Kingdom.

We enjoy tea and a chat, and Peter playing Guitar. Worship brings us much closer to God and we share and pray into any situations of need that concern us.

We've had some very good studies: we have just finished “God in all his fullness.” As Paul prays in his letter to the Ephesians that we may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. We always want to know God a little better each day and this teaching was very helpful.

We are always happy to welcome people who have never been in a house group before to be part of our family.

Ann Robinson

## • **Beacon**

In the summer term, Beacon split into two new study groups to create room for new members. The ‘new’ Beacon group continues to meet on Monday evenings in the Pringle Room and we really enjoy our time together. Over the last year we have completed studies on the Disciples, the Parables of Jesus and now we are looking at the ‘I am’ sayings of Jesus. It’s a great way to learn more about the Bible but it’s also fun to worship and pray together and generally support and encourage one another.

All in all it’s been another great year of fun, friendship and growing in our faith and now we’re looking forward to what the Lord has in store for us in the coming year. Carol McIntosh

## • **Cornerstone/Rainbow**

This year, due to various reasons our meetings have been fewer, both in times we have met together, and in numbers meeting. However our time together continues to be a special time of the week where we continue to enjoy our Bible study & prayer, and giving care and support to each other. Our main study time being centred around Philippians. a study provided by Stephen Street. This has been peppered with studies Advent and Lent Studies

Another visit to the pantomime was enjoyed by those who were able to go. Fred Clarkson

## • **House**

HOUSE is a mixed group of mainly 25–45-year old's. People from both churches attend. We meet each Tuesday at St George’s to fellowship together.

Mike Cawley

## • **Lighthouse**

We have continued to meet at the home of Pat and Ivan Wetherell who have been wonderful hosts. On the occasional times when they have been unable to host us, Melva and Merle have stepped into the breach and kept up the high standard that we have become used to.

Our regular time together follows a familiar pattern of fellowship, praise, study and prayer. Sometimes we take a break from the usual to enjoy a time of just being social with each other. Food is important to us when we socialize and this has taken the form of either a faith meal, a Christmas meal or a pancake party. There has also been an occasional quiz thrown in.

We have enjoyed two study series through our last twelve months. These have been focused around the Cross Shaped Jesus studies and a set of studies on The Sermon on the Mount/Beatitudes. We are currently about half-way through The Sermon on the Mount studies. At our current rate of progress we expect to finish these somewhere between now and Christmas (we don’t see the point in rushing a good thing).

Stephen Street

## • **Open Door**

We have had a lovely year getting to know each other and sharing bible study together.

Relationships in the group are becoming closer as we learn to trust each other with confidential matters.

We are all grateful for Zyg who leads us in beautiful worship. We have ten members at the moment; hopefully more people will join us this year.

We all want a closer relationship with the Lord and each other.

Margaret Hill

## **Sunday School**

Sunday school continues to struggle with only a few children – and some Sundays none at all. We continue to pray for an increase in families in the church.

But, when we have the children, it's a fun morning for them and a joy to teach them.

Joy Brunskill
