## **Governance and management**
The church is operated under two Approved Governing Documents:
- The Parochial Church Councils (Powers) Measures Act 1956 as amended;
- • The Church Representation and Ministers Measures 2019.
Trustees are elected at Annual Parochial Church meeting. They are proposed, seconded, elected and must be willing to stand in the role. their appointment is subject to CofE safeguarding requirements including a confidential disclosure and Enhance DBS check.

## **Objectives and activities**
The principal aim of the organisation is to promote in the ecclesiastical parish the whole mission of the Church.
## **Summary of the main activities undertaken for the public benefit**
Offering weekly Sunday services, occasional additional services including the major Christian festivals (Christmas and Lent/Easter), Weddings and Funerals. Frequent Study groups on a variety of Christian topics.
A weekly community café, Open Table Forum (LBGTQ+), promoting and managing the use of Church Community Rooms for a variety of User groups. Occasional social events – Jazz/Folk Nights and Open-air Shakespeare. The maintenance of a listed building and its grounds, that are used on a monthly basis for the Community Market.
All the above activities seek to promote the physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing of both church and community members alike in a fully inclusive way. We seek to connect with our local community through the availability of various community rooms for events, classes and meetings, as well as offering a Community Café, particularly for those who are vulnerable and may lack friendship and connection in their everyday lives. Our sacred spaces offer time and opportunity for Spiritual enquiry, encouragement and refreshment, particularly during difficult times, but also as part of Baptism, Marriage and Funerals. We seek to promote links with local schools and the residents' association (CTRA). The churchyard and garden area is used by the general public for both relaxation and exercise.
## **Public benefit statement**
The Trustees confirm that they have complied with the duty in section 17 of the Charities Act 2011 to have due regard to the Charity Commission's general guidance on public benefit, 'Charities and Public Benefit'.
## **Summary of the main achievements during the period**
Religious services held every Sunday; Programmes of activities during Advent and Christmas; Monthly Open Table Meetings (LBGTQ+); Community Café held weekly; Short courses for people exploring their faith; Facilities used for a wide range of purposes including family parties, weekly groups e.g. Yoga, Tap dancing, Choirs, Public concerts, Folk evenings, and Open-air Shakespeare.
In late 2024 we were delighted to be able to launch our new website, with the support of a volunteer from the congregation.

## **Financial review**
As anticipated at the close of 2023, this year has been extremeley financially challenging for St John's. A number of unexpected and significant expenses, including some carried over from the previous financial year, prompted a review of the financial position in April 2024. Phil Glanfield kindly undertook a detailed analysis of financial information submitted to the diocese over the past 10 years and was able to identify a significant and serious downward trend in congregational giving which had been concealed, to some extent, by legacies and grants. St John's was in a precarious position and a number of options were considered to address the situation.
At its meeting on 20 March 2024, the PCC agreed, following discussions with the diocese, to pay only 10% of its agreed parish share for an initial period of 6 months; this arrangement has remained ongoing to date.
After taking advice, and consulting with a number of donors, the PCC further agreed at their meeting on 8 May 2024 to transfer around £5,000 from restricted to unrestricted funds, to treat future income from the Community Café project as unrestricted funds and to appeal to the congregation to set up or review their regular giving.
Subsequent to this, a review of premises hire fees was undertaken, and increases, with many user groups remaining subsidised, were inplemented from the start of the 2025 financial year.
## **The charity’s policy on reserves**
The PCC seeks to maintain reserves of 3 at the level of months' operating costs.
## **Financial risks**
As identified above, St John's continues to be in a critical and potentially unsustainable financial position and the PCC is continuing to monitor the situation carefully, in conjunction with the diocese. A review of the Transformational Change Agreement with the diocese was due to be undertaken with the diocese in autumn 2024; this will now take place in early 2025.

I report to the trustees on my examination of the accounts of The Parochial Church Council of the Ecclesiastical Parish of St. John the Evangelist, Carrington (the charity) for the year ended 31 December 2024.
## **Responsibilities and basis of report**
As the trustees of the charity you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (‘the Act’). I report in respect of my examination of the charity’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.
## **Independent examiner’s statement**
I have completed my examination. I confirm that no matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:
1. accounting records were not kept in respect of the charity as required by section 130 of the Act; or
2. the accounts do not accord with those records.
I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

The transfer from the Community rooms fund to the General fund represents the costs incurred in 2023 and allocated to the General fund instead of Community rooms. The PCC determines that this legacy has now been spent in accordance with the donor’s requirements.
The transfer from the Community Café and Children’s work fund to the General fund reflects the release of any restrictions on the use of these funds. The transfer from the General fund to the Dropped kerb fund represents a grant received in 2022 which should have been shown as restricted.
The specific purposes for which the funds are to be applied are as follows: Community rooms – legacy used for social purposes only and/or the maintenance and repair of the Parish Hall Watcombe Circus Nottingham or any other building used for such purpose.
Chair appeal - funds donated for replacement of Nave chairs.
Dropped kerb - for a dropped kerb and yellow lines to be installed on Loscoe Road, Carrington outside that entrance to St. John's Churchyard.

During this period, trustee S Hooper received £1,241 remuneration as Church Organist.
