## **PRIEST IN CHARGE REPORT 2025**

Dear friends, as we look back on another year of worship, mission and community I would like to thank all those who contribute to our worship each week and support the on going running of our church, including but not limited to **;** my ministry team, colleagues, our Churchwardens, PCC Members and Deanery Synod Reps, the music group, children’s group leaders and all who lead intercessions and Bible readings.

Trinity Church continues each week in Trinity Academy and working with the Chaplain in the school we continue to engage with pupils in the school. This academic year we have been joined by four Year 9 boys who are actively exploring their faith in the Roman Catholic and Orthodox churches, and we have had many interesting discussion with them. If you know pupils at the school through your extended family network please do mention this to them as it is a great way for the work of our church to extend into the school.

The North Halifax Open the Book Team is made up of members from Illingworth Moor Methodist Church and St. John’s Bradshaw. It has been a joy for me to join with them in telling Bible stories in Bradshaw Primary, Abbey Park Primary and Lee Mount Primary schools. The member of staff from Illingworth Moor Methodist Church has been coordinating this work until now, but she has resigned from her post and it is unclear at this point if she will be replaced immediately. It’s also important that we at St. George’s support the work in Lee Mount Primary School. Please consider if uou could join the team for this important work.

We are now in our second year of our ReWeave Together journey. This is a 3-year training course run by the Diocese of Leeds seeking to help us to understand ourselves better and engage more meaningfully with the community we serve. At the end of our first year we decided on our Missional Challenge going forward, which is “Explore working with children and families, with particular attention to single parent families”. We are currently looking for partner organisations in our parish who are already doing this work. Many thanks to our parish team who have been attending meetings and working away behind the scenes to facilitate this process.

We have now completed the task of reading the Bible in a year together. People who participated have described it as a useful experience and encountered bits of the Bible they had not read before. I will make the lists of readings and supporting information available at the back of church for anyone who wants to experience this for themselves.

Rev’d Alan Maxwell

## **PCC SECRETARY REPORT 2025**

The PCC has met regularly over the past twelve months to fulfil their role of stewarding and having oversight of the life of the church. At each meeting there are: updates on work required on maintaining the buildings (the church itself. The church hall and St. George’s House, a financial update, a Vicar’s report, a safeguarding update and updates from St. George’s Community Trust, the Deanery Synod and North Halifax Churches Together.

This past year The Archdeacon of Halifax has granted PCC permission for The Commonwealth War Graves Commission to display a plaque, which they will fix. PCC has been working through the renewing of the rental agreement (this is ongoing) between The PCC and St. George’s Community Trust for the renting of St. George’s House which has included a meeting between PCC representatives and SGCT representatives to agree payment costs for internal repairs that need doing in St. George’s House.

In October 2025 PCC Members attended a PCC away day with the Reweave team and members of St. John’s Bradshaw PCC, as part of both churches participation in the Reweave Project.

Thank you to all who serve on The PCC and to all who report back to us from meetings they have attended and/or work they are doing/overseeing. Thank you especially to Charles and Gerda for their reports on the buildings and finance respectively and to Rev Alan for his Vicars reports.

## **St George’s Buildings Report for year ending December 2025**

This report is a brief summary of the many building repairs and maintenance tasks undertaken throughout the year. Detailed descriptions and costs are not included here; further details are available through the wardens, treasurer and Church Council. The Church Log Book is also updated annually by the Church Council.

Overall responsibility for buildings, insurance and H&S rests directly with the Vicar, Wardens and Church Council.

We are grateful for the number of volunteers who have undertaken practical tasks maintenance and D.I.Y. This is essential as part of church members’ contribution to maintaining and improving our buildings and grounds for a safe and pleasing environment.

The 5-year Quinquennial Inspection of the church building took place in 2023.

## **CHURCH**

Neglect will lead to either ‘dry rot’ or/and the risk of plasterwork collapse. Flashing along the tabling stones at the east end of the north facing high roof is missing after storm damage.

We continue to check and take action to avoid slippery paving at the entrance gates under the trees.

The church boiler was serviced in March 2024 – pending for 2026.

The church clock had its annual service in 2025

Lighting inside church is checked regularly. The top window up-lights are beyond their life expectancy and should not be used. Some LED light fittings above the choir stalls require replacing.

The emergency lighting system has been checked and appears to be working as required.

Regular weekly cleaning is by four teams on a rota

Internal decoration was completed throughout in 2022. The deterioration requiring attention evident in the last 4

areas of the plasterwork at high level and down the vestry steps – a plan is in place to carryout repairs during the summer months.

Repairs to the guttering and replacement of some roof tiles have been made.

External notice board is well out of date and needs updating – still showing 1[st] Sunday in the month early communion etc and times of services out of date.

## **CHURCH HALL**

The kitchen hot water gas boiler, last serviced in 2019, is well beyond its life expectancy – but seems to be working okay.

The main room heater nearest the entrance was replaced in January 2023. The control needs repair. The room heater, near the toilets was replaced in 2019.

Reminder to ensure hall users do not hang decorations or other flammable items above the 2 room heaters

The hall was redecorated in its entirety in 2021 with some remedial work undertaken since.

Cleaning takes place on a weekly basis.

During the summer a thorough clean was undertaken along with the carpet cleaning. External gutters and fall pipes need cleaning.

Roof repairs have been carried out above the storerooms.

## **ST GEORGE’S HOUSE and HOUSE GROUNDS**

Some roof work is urgently required at high levels including clearing of valley gutters and fall pipes. This is starting to affect internal plasterwork especially in the attic rooms and should not be ignored. This is an urgent matter. Quotes for these works have been obtained.

Gutters/fall pipes facing the park should also be replaced.

Vandalism damage occurred to Parkinson Room double glazed windows and one is still boarded over.

4

Clearing of leaves and scraping mud off the paving was completed thanks to volunteers work, also to the clearing of shrubbery between the hall and house.

Both Central Heating boilers have required remedial work to keep them operational

- 1 hot water boiler in the kitchen, 2 gas fires upstairs and the cooker were last serviced in 2019

- 2 Gas fires in the Parkinson Room seem to be well beyond their sell-by date and advice needed whether to be replaced or disconnected.

All the trees in the grounds around the house are protected by a Tree Preservation Order (TPO)

The CCTV to the house is being replaced by a system which has been obtained by Saint Georges Trust.

## **ALL THREE BUILDINGS**

An electrical installation safety check was completed in 2023.

Annual checks and servicing have taken place for –

Fire Fighting equipment (4 Fire Blankets and 23 extinguishers) – annual services completed January 2025, Intruder Alarms fully serviced in February in Feb 2025,

Emergency Lighting was tested in all three buildings in 2025.

St George’s House Fire Alarm control panel and system were annually serviced in 2025.

Intruder Alarm activations are programmed to call out Charles Gear and Allan Maxwell. _Stuart Rushforth has now_

## _stepped down._

Occasional false alarms were activated during the year and generally these could be avoided with care.

There are questions as to whether the dial out systems on the three alarms will still operate when the phone lines are changed by the telephone companies from analog to digital.

Smart Water – all items of value have previously been marked and log book updated to a CD which is to be updated and on separate drive.

## **GRAVEYARD AND GROUNDS**

A section of boundary wall between the graveyard and the adjacent private property to the south side of church collapsed in 2023. The wall is still to re-build. Discussions with the diocesan architect, church wardens and ecclesiastical insurance regarding the repair of the wall took place. The result being that ecclesiastical insurance will not contribute to the repair of the wall. Saint George’s will have to cover the rebuild costs. An inspection of the boundary walls has been undertaken by the architect and he has highlighted that a section starting approximately from the the graveyard for 30m will require rebuilding.

The three instances of boundary wall collapsing in the last few years highlights the need for constant vigilance of all our walls and remedial action to prevent further collapses adjacent to public footpaths

There are safety concerns mainly caused by trees planted too near the back of the walls.

1. Lilac Street, from the House to the rear church entrance gate some of which retains the graveyard.

2. The high wall on the park side of St Georges House is leaning, again being affected by the big trees behind it

3. The condition of the wall from the entrance gate towards the end of St George’s Road is getting worse.

4. Some of the trees that were considered as not to affect the walls may in fact be doing and a further review is to be made.

Leaf clearing is a major task each autumn. Grass has been cut regularly throughout summer and gardening tasks are ongoing. We are grateful to volunteers otherwise the graveyard would be well overgrown. The condition of graves and gravestones require regular checks for safety of visitors and those carrying out gardening/ground works.

**We pray for God’s continuing guidance in all we do to maintain our buildings in good repair and thank Him for the help from volunteers received during the past year. We also pray for the safety of all the users of our buildings as well as wise decisions on ways forward on the maintenance and use of our premises and the safety of pedestrians alongside our walls along Lilac Street and St George’s Road.**

## **North Halifax Churches Together Report 2025**

The annual carol singing took place at Morrisons on 20 December 2025 and was well attended just short of £160 was raised. This will be shared between the food drop in centre Project Colt. The joint service for the week of prayer for Christian unity on 18[th] January 2026 took place at Holy Nativity Church, Mixenden. It was inn the form of a rock mass. A different and new way of experiencing liturgy and communion.

Rev. Louise Dickinson has been inducted as the Minister of Lee Mount Baptist Church. Rev Glenn Roper and Philip Ashworth represented St. George’s at this service.

The 2026 Lent Course “Responses to The Resurrection” was hosted by Illingworth Moor Methodist Church. Thank you to The Methodists for their hospitality. Each week a different character from the Gospels has been studied, each session being led by a member of the North Halifax Clergy and also one by John Hudson from Lee Mount Baptist Church who wrote the course. Thank you to John for that.

As usual this years Lent Course has been most worthwhile in sharing fellowship and faith with our brothers and sisters.

## **FINANCIAL REVIEW**

Our total receipts on unrestricted funds were £57694 of which £35764 was unrestricted voluntary donations, and a further £9314 was from Gift Aid. The remainder of £2836 is made of fees to church, coffee donations and refunds. All of these are found on the Income Financial statements. St. George’s House which is rented by St. George’s Community Trust also provided an income of £3120. We also have Preschool renting the church hall which provided an income of £6660. No income is received during school holidays. Restricted donations of £4754 were also received and detailed on the financial statements.

Our Parish Share for 2025 was £28101 and was paid in full.

Again, this could not have been achieved without our church members being so committed to the running of the church. I would like to give thanks to all, as this made sure, we received monies to be able to pay our monthly commitments. However, this gives me the opportunity to ask our members to think and pray about their giving. The year-on-year commitment is getting harder and especially as our gas, electricity and insurance costs having increased.

Our gas for Dec – Jan is over £1k pm, the electricity costs on average between £200 - £400 pm for church/hall. The insurance for the church/hall was £589pm and St. George’s House cost £153pm both have now increased.

It is PCC policy to try to maintain a balance on unrestricted funds that equates to at least three months unrestricted payments. This is equivalent to £12000. It is held to smoothe out fluctuations on cash flow and to meet emergencies. However, this was not possible for the whole of 2025.

Our missionary giving is as described below, but we have been unable to support our organisations as we have in previous years.

Page 13 of the report gives full details of all income received in 2025 and all expenditure on page 14. This includes £9314 from recoverable income tax thanks to Gift Aid donations from the congregation. The amount also includes a certain amount of loose collections we can claim back in April each year.

6

## **GIFT AID DONATIONS**

Gift Aid (HMRC Refund) – donations continue to be given for the Building Fund. The generosity of our church members who pay tax where we can make a claim from HMRC helps boost our building fund which we rely on for repairs. The payment of the Ladies Weekend by each individual and gift aid claimed goes back to their account which helps with the cost of running the weekend which is very much appreciated by the organisers.

## **NON-GIFT DONATIONS**

Monthly donations continue to be received to the Church Organ fund. These gifts are very much appreciated to carry out any work required. The organ is serviced/repairs carried out as funds allow annually using these donations only.

## **For those that pay tax please bear in mind that should you no longer pay tax that you need to contact Rev. Alan Maxwell and let him know. Any oversight lies with the giver and not the church to pay back to HMRC.**

## **DONATIONS**

We received two donations £180 and £1000 from a ‘Family Settlement Fund’ which is allocated to the Restricted Fund account. There will be no more donations until 2027.

Page 15 outlines our expenditure.

## **MISSION**

Our budget in 2025 did not allow us to give as generously as in previous years. We only managed to allocate the following to our regular organisation:

Mission money has been allocated as follows;

- £100 - Royal British Legion – Ovenden Branch

## **MISSON/SPECIAL APPEALS**

We were able to send contributions of £1410.75 following special appeals in church, as outlined below:

   - £306 - The Children’s Society (2024) Christingle Service) paid in January 2025

- £50 - Harvest - Happy Days Ministries (help the Homeless)

- £300 - C.I.C.S. at the request of our Independent Auditor by John Hudson (IE) re his fees.

- £253.25 - Jars of Grace for UNICEF (£107.51 and £145.74)

- £401.50 - Tearfund from the Quiz night

- £100 - Patrick Ngigi Mission with a Vision (into a holding account)

The money raised from Christingle 2025 will be shown in next year’s accounts as the money was not sent until January 2026.

The No1 bank account at the end of December 2025 had after expenditure a balance of £2000 which will be divided between Patrick Ngigi MWV and Andy and Katie Walsh CMS in 2026.

## **LEGACIES**

No legacies were received in 2025.

## **RESERVE**

Our maintenance investment through the Church Board of Finance (CBF) stands at £17286. The PCC invested £10k from funds held in the Restricted Funds account from the A Dennison account. The £10k is funding for a Youth Worker but at this time this has not been implemented.

## **COMMITMENTS IN 2026**

Our overall commitments for 2026 amounts to around £63130. These include Common Fund (£26696), Mission (£0, Insurance (£9104) church/hall utilities (£10,600), fire protection/alarm/pat testing (£1,100), clock maintenance cost (£0) (£726 - 3yr contract 2024-2026), Music Licence (£425) along with the upkeep of three buildings and admin expenses. The Budget Sheet for 2026 is approximate as we have considered the rise in utility rates. The utility

7

contracts for both our Electricity and Gas run until (Electricity - Dec 2028 and Gas Sept 2030). A new contract for our electricity began 1 Jan 2026 with EON Green Energy.

Our main anticipated income is approximately £57694 (based on 2025 income). This is made up from church giving, and includes £3120 Community Trust Rent, £6660 Playgroup Rent and approximately a Tax Refund of £9314. which means that we are looking at a deficit of £5436. We will have no major funds for desirable improvements, other expenses or building repairs other than that which has already been allocated or to be paid from the Restricted Fund account in respect of buildings.

Finally, thank you from me to all that have helped this last year and continue to support in any way. If anyone feels they can help with counting the collection after the service please have a word.

Thank you all for your support.

## **PAROCHIAL CHURCH COUNCIL OF OVENDEN ST. GEORGES NOTES FOR THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS FOR THE YEAR ENDING 31ST DECEMBER 2025**

## **ACCOUNTING POLICIES**

The financial Statements of the PCC have been prepared under the Church Accounting Regulations 2006 in accordance with applicable accounting standards and the current Statement of Recommended Practice Accounting and Reporting by Charities (SORP 2015) using the Accruals basis. These have been prepared under the historical cost convention except for the valuation of investment assets, which are shown at market value. The financial statements include all transactions, assets and liabilities for which the PCC is responsible in law. They do not include the accounts of church groups that owe their main affiliation to another body, nor those that are informal gatherings of church members.

## **FUND ACCOUNTING**

_Endowment funds_ are funds, the capital of which must be retained either permanently or at the PCC’s discretion; the income derived arising from the endowment is to be used either as restricted or unrestricted funds depending on the purpose for which the endowment was established in the first place. Res _tricted Funds_ comprise (a) income from endowments which is to be expended only on the restricted purposes intended by the donor and (b) revenue donations or grants for a specific PCC activity intended by the donor. Where these funds have unspent balances, interest on their pooled investment is apportioned to the individual funds on an average balance basis.

_Unrestricted Funds_ are income funds which are to be spent for the PCC general purposes.

_Designated Funds_ are general funds set aside by the PCC for use in the future. Project funds are designated for particular projects for administration purposes only. Funds designated as invested in fixed assets for the PCC’s own use abated in line with assets’ annual depreciation charges in the SOFA. Designated funds remain unrestricted and the PCC will move any surplus to other general funds.

## **INCOMING RESOURCES**

Planned giving, collections and similar donations are recognised when received. Tax refunds are recognised when the incoming resource to which they relate is received. Grants and legacies are accounted for when the PCC is entitled to use the resources, their ultimate receipt is considered reasonably certain and the amounts due are reliably quantifiable. Dividends are accounted for when declared receivable, interest as and when accrued by the payer. All incoming resources are accounted for gross.

## **RESOURCES EXPENDED**

Grants and donations are accounted for when paid over, or when awarded, if that award creates a binding or constructive obligation on the PCC. The diocesan parish share expected to be paid over is accounted for when due.

All other expenditure is generally recognised when it is incurred and is accounted for gross.

Consecrated and benefice property is not included in the accounts in accordance with s.10(2)(a) and (c) of the Charities Act 2011.

Movable church furnishings held by the vicar and churchwardens on special trust for the PCC and which require a faculty for disposal are inalienable property, listed in the church’s inventory, which can be inspected (at any reasonable time). For anything acquired prior to 2000 there is insufficient cost information available and therefore such assets are not valued in the financial statements. Subsequently no individual item has cost more than £1,000 so all such expenditure has been written off when incurred. St George’s House and the Church Hall are shown at cost.

11

Equipment used within the church premises is depreciated on a straight line basis over four years. Individual items of equipment with a purchase price of £1000 or less are written off when the asset is acquired.

Investments are valued at market value at 31[st] December 2025.

Current assets are represented by cash at bank and in hand at the Yorkshire Bank Plc (known as Virgin Money) and the Central Board of Finance of the Church of England.

Priest in Charge – Alan Maxwell

PCC Chair – Charles Gear

Church Treasurer - Gerda Normington

## **10.00am Service report 2025**

We give thanks to all who take part – and keep the 10.00 service – flowing each week. From the warm welcome as you enter the church – for all who Read – or say the prayers. For the Music Group and their dedication to service each week. Foor all those involved in the Children’s work. For those who make coffee, after each service and for those who clean the Church each week.

Also, for our Clergy Team – who would like to hear from you – if you would like to join in any part of the Service each week. Many thanks to All.

## **Gail Muff**

**Morning Service Leader**

## **Pastoral Team report 2025**

The team continues to work behind the scenes with telephone calls – letters of encouragement and visits. We look forward to a new year – to grow our church – and being supportive – when – and where needed

## **7th St. George’s Scouts – Annual Report 2025**

The group has a reduced membership this year around 39 members. We have seen a reduction in membership across all sections. This was true last year as well but was masked at group level last year with the introduction of Squirrels. We have looked to bolster the leadership within the group to allow us to focus on initiatives to then expand the membership in Beavers, Cubs and Scouts.

Operating in an area of financial challenge in an environment of a cost-of-living crisis. We are, unfortunately, a luxury families cannot afford.

We have had to heavily subsidise capitation to maintain the membership we currently have.

We all feel at St. George’s Scouts that we like all the sections to get together as much as possible, helping to create a feeling of togetherness and community,

The focus of the group is to continue to increase in numbers across the group, but this is hampered by the challenge of increasing the number of leaders.

## **At present we have 5 sections** :

Squirrels: Monday Lee Mount School - Leaders: Dawn, Janet, Brendan. Beavers: Monday Church Hall - Leaders: Janet, Amy and Brendan Cubs: Tuesday Church Hall - Leaders: Graham, Ellie, Richard, Brendan, Emma Scouts: Wednesday Church Hall - Leaders: James, PJ, Richard, Graham, Brendan, Ellie Explorers: Wednesday Church Hall - Leaders: Graham

18

We welcome Richard to the group; he has recently joined us as a new leader. Mel, Sue and Sharron support as occasional helpers and help whenever possible.

Squirrels are loving the sessions we run on a Monday 3.15 till 4.15 at Lee Mount School. We have regular attendees and they enjoy the different activities. We run Eg: team games, Space, Colouring, Building Lego etc.

Beavers have had another eventful year. We have seen some of our members move up to our Cubs section and gained some new members in Beavers from our Squirrels group at Lee Mount School.

We took part in the Remembrance service again which was well attended and the first time for some our Beavers who enjoyed carrying the flag in the procession.

We have worked on lots of badges such as First Aid, Arts and Crafts, making paper aeroplanes then seeing who could get them to fly the furthest! Cooking, Health and Hygiene in the kitchen and around the house, Healthy eating including food tasting and keeping fit.

We are planning our Easter activities and are looking forward to some outdoor activities if the weather improves.

The Cubs, Scouts and Explorers have been active again this year, completing the Archery, Shooting, Road Safety and the Science badge which involved creating ‘slime’.

Cooking pizzas on open fires, building bridges out of spaghetti, tracking, cyclist badge which involved not only being able to cycle, but also aspects of bike maintenance such as puncture repair, orienteering, cooking badge and crate stacking.

We have also managed some fund-raising by bag packing at Morrison’s over the Christmas period. James Taylor was awarded his 15 year long service award this year, Well done, JAMES. Brendan McLaughlin was awarded his 30 years long Service Award. He says that he feels every year of that 30!!!!!!

The leaders were involved with the Poppy Collections at Lidl in Boothtown. Well done everyone and keep the good work up.

We would also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone at St. George’s for the support we receive from them both practically and spiritually and for the interest in the work we all do with the young people.
