TRUSTEES ANNUAL REPORT
FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 DECEMBER 2024
The Trustees present thelr Annual Report and the Flnanclal Statements for the year ended 31 December
2024:

The primary objective of Patcham All Salnts PCC 15 the promotion of the Gospel of our lord Jesus
Chrlst accordlng to the doctrines and practices of the Church of England. The PCC has the
responsibility of co-operating with the clergy In promoting in the eccleslastlcal parish the whole
mission of the Church, pastoral, evangellstlc, social, and ecumenical.
When plannin8 our activitie5 for the year, the clergy and the PCC have consldered the Charlty
Commission's guidance on public benefit and, In particular, the specific guldance on charities for the
advancement of religion.
The objectives of the PCC in cooperation wlth the clergy are:.
to promote All Salnts and The Ascension as places of prayer, worship and Chrlstian Fellowshlp
• to proclalm the Gospel through preachln8, teaching and building felatlonships
to provide pastoral and splritual care to regular members and to the wlder parlsh, without
cost to the indlvldua15 concerned
to make activities available to resldents in the Parish
to make the Church, Church Centre. Church Barn and rooms at the Ascension available for
use by local groups and individuals
• to support agencles seeklng to alleviate poverty and promote the Gospel both locally and
abroad
On 28th January the Rev'd Mark Rodger was Ilcensed as Associate Vicar of All Saints, Patcham to lead
the Parish under the leadershlp of the Rev'd Tom Holbird IPriest-In-Charge at St Matthias Fiveways
and All Saints, Patcharn).
On Vision Sunday in May, Mark shared our vislon to play our part in the evangelism of the nation, the
revltallsation of the church and the transformation of society. He explained that a significant part of
this would be to grow All Saints to become a resourcing church for three distinct areas of Parlsh,
before sending a team to revltalise The Ascension, Westdene and in the future send a team to plant a
new church in Holllngbury.

elisation of the nation..
One of the hlghllghts of 2024 was Baptism Sunday In October when Russell, Joe and Wlll were
baptised and we celebrated all that God had done in thelr Ilves. Later in November, Gary was
conflrmed at St. Peter's Brighton, another wonderful symbol of God's work in his life. Alpha
continued to be a pillar of our strategy to help people explore falth In Jesus and we ran three Alpha
courses for people explorlng falth for the first time as well as those rediscovering thelr faith.
Sundays continued to be a place where people encountered Jesus for the first time.
Resldents from a local care home commented:
"Thi5 church just says, You're so welcomel"
Many of the big guest servlces throughout the year were full with standing room onty Includln8
Easter, Remembrance Sunday, Patcham Infant Year 2 Nativlty, Patcham Junlor Year 3 Nativlty and
Carols by Candlelight. Other spetlal services reached out to people who do not usually come to our
church Includlng our two Toddler Carols, Chrlstingle, Midnight Communlon and Christmas Day
Celebration.
In the early part of 2024, Mark and Laura hosted drinks with small groups of the church famlly to
hear their stories of falth, life and church and share their own. They also hosted a Volunteers Night to
thank the many volunteers In the Parlsh who have glven so much in the last season.
A5 part of the strategy for growth, All Saint5 hosted 12 Hours of Prayer In November with over 30
dults joining through the day and ending wlth an addltlonal slx families praying together in a variety
of Interactive ways,
Although the church Is more about a communlty of apprentices of Jesus knowing Him mole clearly,
loving Him more dearly and following HIM MO￿ nearly, and not slmply about the number of people
attending, it is encouraging to see that the usual number of people gatherlng on a Sunday has been
conslstently growing slnce 2022. In fact, 2024 saw us reach our hi8hest levels of attenders and
hi8hest percentage of children since 2015.
2024 saw the beginnlng of Unlte, a support group for parents, grandparents and carers with children
wlth neurodiversity and/or additional needs. The group meets to share thelr experIen￿5 and support
one another and share the experlences of raising a neurodlverse young person. The challenges for
parents, their carers and schools are huge and the group has been looking how best to support more
people and advocate for positive change. The focus is on listening, sharlng anxieties and or concerns
alongside the opportunlty to discuss ways forward.
Anonymous comments received from group members include:
"I have been a member of UNITE since the first meeting (July 2024). l am a parent of a 13
year old boy with a dlagnosls of ADHD. We have lived In the parish of All Salnts Patcham for
o couple of years and at (J time when our son was making the transition to secondary school.
The group supports both parents and grandparents of chlldren with neurodiversity.-

December, As part of our vision to grow All Saints to be a resourcing church to the three dlstinct
areas of Parish, the PCC declded to reduce the number of service5 at Ascenslon to once a month
from September and bl-monthy from January In order to focus on growlng All Saints. At the same

congregation.
Both churches are equipped wlth modern heating, lighting and audlo-vlsual systems, with volunteers
provldlng a warm welcome & refreshments. A webslte has been maintalned for both churches to give

To enable worship to take place in both churches as much as possible, we continued to sha
resources whlch included sharing preaching/teachin8 thernes, using both Ilve and recorded sermons.
Our mldweek Said Communion Service continued to meet monthly, and was a highlight for many. It
has proved popular with the more elderly in our congregation, some of whom do not attend our
Sunday services. The avera8e attendance of eighteen to twenty people enjoy refreshments and
fellowship afterwards.
A regular attendee has said:
"I have fvund it an encournging and helpful space in a more intimate otmosphere ond look
forward to the monthly methng".
Across the year we ran 3 Alpha courses, giving guests a chance to ask questions and explore the
Christian faith in a fun, no-pressure environment. We had over 20 guests join us, and joined in with
the St Peter's Family of Churches Holy Spirit Away Days. We've seen people deepen an existing faith

One guest sald:
"Since inviting Jesus into my life, I feel o lot culmer, and I have learnt thot l always have
someone there who I con always rely on. I have leornt to be more composslonote, and I can
trust hlm to gulde me in the right directlon when needed, which is great comfort."
Parlsh Zoom Prayer contfnued to be a feature in 2024, meeting on Mondays at 8.30am and 7.30pm to
read the Scrlptures and pray for the community, local and global issues and personal needs, wlth an
opportunity to share words of encouragement and answers to prayers and, In a year of change and
declsion, seeking God's leadlng for the life and mission of the church, At any one meeting• an average
of seven participants were present on the calls.
Parilcipants commented:
"Zoom Prayer Is o lifeline especially when I can't get to church"
"It 15 50 much easier to pray wlth others than alone"
It has been wonderful to see our monthly in-person Prayer Gatherlng contlnulng throughout 2024,
focusing on Intercesslon for our Church, the clty, and beyond. Beginning with worship, it is an hour of
Interactive and creative prayer, often hosted by a member of the congregation.
One regular attendee commented:
"I do see thot as a very important meeting and a foundational meeting fvr our mlnlstry
together"
Our Easter programme was full this year, with the usual Maundy Thursday meal, Good Friday service
and Easter Sunday Celebration. There was also the addition of a Good Frlday Bake-Along event for
families. giving the opportunity to explofe the Easter story whilst baklng a treat together. This was
hosted In the Barn and was attended by a mlx of church famllles and guests.
The month of December was busyi With muliiple Chrlstmas services and events which were
adverttsed throughout the Parish, sharing the Gospel message of Christmas. We again hosted two
Carols by CandleliBht services in order to welcome more guests. and were pleased to welcome over
280 guests. The traditional mulled wine and mince ples were served in between the two servlces
outside the church, which worked well.
After a very successful first Toddler Carols in 2023 we ran two Toddler Carol serVI￿S thls year, back to
back in the Barn. The weather was awful, however numbers were only $1Sghtly down on last year
(with 119 people over the two services). The atmosphere was great as small people and theSr grown
ups engaged with the Christmas story and enjoyed refreshments after from a lovely Christmas market
style stall.
On Christmas Eve, the ever-popular Christingle servlce welcomed familles from across the Parish, and
the Midnight Service was a wonderful chance ft)r reflection.
Qulet Space, held monthly, enabled particlpants to reflect and contemplate on what God may be
saying either individually or collectively.

It has been so exciting to see God adding to the number In Junior Church durlng the year and to See
friendships grow among familie5, We are so grateful to the committed, and growing, team who teach

Old Testament heroes such as Elijah and Daniel, and spent some time digging Into the events of Holy

Three Year I classes from Patcham Infants vislted All Saints to learn about the Church, its worshlpi

to learn more about the hlstory of the church and to enjoy refreshments. It is always a very positive
and enjoyable experience when members of the congregation come together with a purpose.
The Frlends held an Open Arts and Crafts morning again on 7th December. They were able to book
more crafters this year, as well as artlsts, and offered soup lunches, mulled alcohol-free drinks and
rnin￿ pies. A lot more affordable items were available thls year, providing an ideal opportunlty to
meet people in the local community.
Funding opportunities: The Frlends have been blessed by the generosity of local antique furnlture
restorer and Patcham resident, Anthony Meadows, who restored the historlc church chest, thought
to be from the Jacobean period. The chest Is now placed in the chancel and we are very thankful for
Anthon¢s willingness and expertlse. The Friends have also funded two sets of extendable candle

Over at The Ascenslon, this toddler group had another great year where we witnessed our regular
children growing in confidence and engaging so well with one another and the activittes. It was also
lovely to see the mumslcarers supporttng one another and making firm friendships, During the year
we welcomed new bables, some new regulars and occasional vlsits from grand-parents and dads.
Christmas Tots was a highlight, with Chrlstmas craft and songs, and a visit from our special 'bearded'
guest with his sack of giftsl
With some of the team stepping down or movlng on at the end of 2024, the difficult decision was
made to pause the group in 2025, and relaunch somethlng to connect with famllies alongside the
revitalisation of The Ascension Westdene in 2026.
We would like to express our grdtitude to the volunteers who have led this group so brilliantlyi the
Impact has been enormous on local families and we a￿ so thankful for thelr work.

are greatly encouraged by the feedback we recelve includinB the followlng comments:
"To All the ladies at lunch - One blg thank you"
"Wonderfulfvod and compony"
"We appreciate the skFlls and hord work of the team. Always excellentfood"
We continue to pray for all who Join u5 ft)r lunch and that new doors wlll open to serve our local

At All Saints,, regular hlrers, chlldren's birthday parties and groups such as Barnacles, Brownles,
Ralnbows and Good News for Everyone continued to hire space. Our halls were also used by families
and friends following funerals, thanksglvlng services, baptisms and other life events.
In 2024 a new bulldlngs and fabric team began meeting with the purpose of ensuring our buildings
serve the vision of our church. Over the year, the team looked at our various bulldings and began
prioritising what work needs to be done. In particular a group has looked at the leak/damp at The
Ascension and a plan is now in pla￿ to fix this. In addition plans began to be made to renovate The
Barn at All Salnts, particularly puttin8 a new kltchen in to bring it up to modern standards, In part for
the benefit of hirers,
At The Ascension there are a number of long term hirers who enjoy the spaces on offer for thelr
varlous activlties. Brlghton Theatre Group has been with us for several years as well as a number of
U3A group5 offering Pilates and table tennis. Children's parties are less popular as the Westdene
Community Barn is a preferred space. We have excellent relationships with the Barn and endeavour
to Support one another. The revenue from hirers has provided a good source of income.

Unrestrlcted Income for 2024 was £187,014 compared to £149,098 in the prior year. The increase in
income is mostly due to an increase in regular glving and one off donations and the recelpt of two
legacles.
Unrestricted expenditure for 2024 was £161,962 cornpared to £121,304 In the prior year. Thls
increase in unrestricted expendlture of £40,658 was mostly due to an Sncrease in our parish
contrlbution of £27,633 and increases in staff costs, admln costs, church ministry and running costs.
In 2024 we received restricted Strategic Development Grant Funding from Chlchester Diocese of £38k
{£46.8k in the prior yeail, which covers set up and salary costs for the purpose of revitallzlng the
Parlsh of All Salnts, Patcham.
We ended the year wlth a surplus in unrestricted funds before galns and losses on investments of
£25,052 (prlor year surplus of £27,794). Our total funds stood at £1,851,837 at 310ecember 2024
compared to £1,820,977 at 31 December 2023.
The PCC Reserves Pollcy Is to hold general reserves of a minimum of three months normal working
expenditure together with an addltlonal reserve, as a desiEnated fund, prlmarily to meet exceptional
expendlture, or unexpected building maintenance or Improvement costs. Our General Fund at 31
December 2024 stood at £123,553 at £110,778 and complied with this poIIcy.
Thanks are due to so many people at both churches who willingly have glven of their time helping to
mal<e thlngs happen, whether it is running and helping wlth all the various groups and activities,

We want to say a huge thank you to the Rev'd Caz Dunl<. Caz joined the staff team at All Salnts, Parish
in November 2019 and retired in March 2025. She led the Ascension, was key in leading the whole
Parish through COVID as well as through two vacancies, including the transition to joining the Family
of Churches in Brighton. It is clear that God called Caz for this important season In the Parish. Her
example of following Jesus, particularly in the way she has cared, encouraged and supported the
church, provided stability and consistsncy and built us up through her Bible teaching has been an
inspiration to us.
