CHAIRS REPORT TO TRUSTEES

ASSOCIATION BUSINESS
Hours of usage at the Lonny Wilsoncroft Community Centre on Stepping Lane over the period since our last AGM have steadily increased so that at the present time the hall is being hired out by regular users for 20.5 hours a week. We still have our martial arts classes, and these have been joined by a yoga class, Baby and Toddler group and 2 churches which meet on a Sunday each week. We also have a class booked in to start at the beginning of November called Fit Camp. We did have a Zumba class which started at the early part of the year but unfortunately has decided not to come back after the summer break due to personal issues. We are very sad to say that we also lost our long established group, Stepping Lane Bowls who have unfortunately closed their group for good. We were very sad to see them go.
However during the past 12 months we were very happy to have our Lunch n Meet luncheon club recommence at the end of April 2022, and numbers attending this much loved weekly event have steadily increased, with Mu, back at the helm in the kitchen and our wonderful volunteers, Sue, Pauline and Lynn back meeting and greeting our diners. They have also been joined by the fabulous Ne-ne who arrives early every Tuesday to get the tables set up and then returns later to put them all away. We must also mention our volunteer driver, Ross who goes out to collect folks in the mini bus and brings them along every week, and then takes them home afterwards. Ross also drives the mini bus for our Monday shopping trips, collecting a dozen or so people along the way and taking them home with their shopping afterwards. Can I also thank Lisa Higginbottom who steps in when Ross is on holiday.
We have also had 13 private parties and events, with more booked in, in the near future.
We have also started up a number of activities during the past few months to help local residents post pandemic. One of these events is our Cooking with Doreen Course. This is a six week course which takes place every Thursday morning. Up to 6 people can take part at any one time. Doreen Lake leads the class and demonstrates basic cooking techniques using cheap and nutritious food. The equipment for this course was bought with a grant from Asda and the Mackworth Neighbourhood Board provided more funding to buy the ingredients needed for each weeks class. So far 3 courses have been completed and we look forward to more courses in the future. We thank Doreen for her time and effort with this project.
Another activity which we started in September 2021 was our New Zeal 4 Life group. This group would meet every week on a Monday afternoon and do different activities each week, including a sing a long with our lovely Ross, who would entertain folks with songs from the 50’s 60’s and 70s. This group was suspended in the New Year simply because I (Chair Mandy Coons) was running this group and unfortunately I was not able to carry on as my time was spread too thinly and I had other commitments at home. However, this group has now re-started in September, with another volunteer, Lisa Higginbottom, leading the group and also driving the mini bus to pick people up to come along for the afternoon. So far it is only happening once a month, with our sing a long with Ross, but we are hoping this will become a weekly event once again.

2021 was the first time that Mackworth Ward held its own Remembrance Day Memorial Service. The New Zealand Community Association were very pleased to be invited to the planning of this event and to attend the service. The event was very well attended by local residents. The NZCA offered the service of the mini bus to take those wanting to go up to the Memorial on Prince Charles Avenue. In the run up to this event, 4 volunteers from the NZCA went out placing lamp post poppies on all the streets of our area. The NZCA sponsored about half of the 94 poppies that were purchased with the other poppies being sponsored by local residents. Thanks to Andy and Lynne and Ross for joining me in putting the poppies up. It was very nice when local residents came up to us whilst doing this job, to thank us for doing it.
Due to Covid we were still cautious with some of our more popular events, including the Halloween disco, which is probably the most popular event on our calendar and the Childrens Christmas Party. The Halloween event was scaled down dramatically, and the Party was postponed again. However we are very hopeful that the Party will be able to go ahead this year as planned.
We did take to the streets once more in the mini bus to bring a bit of Christmas cheer to residents with mince pies and sweets for the kids.
The Charity shops were open continuously this year with no national or local lockdowns, however both shops were only open 4 days each a week, due to a lack of volunteers. During the period of the shops being opened after the last lockdown which ended in April 2021, the Uttoxeter Old Rd shop only managed to make its rent in one month. The committee were made aware of this and took the decision to carry on, in the hope that more volunteers would be found and things would improve, as the Campion St shop was making enough money to cover the short fall in the other shops rent, however things were brought to a head when the energy crisis worsened and the predicted 80% rise in bills was announced. After looking at the finances of the association we knew that we needed to take drastic action, as the energy bill for the centre would be over £1,200 after October. Two things were decided in a meeting of the officers of the Association, first we would have to drastically increase the rent of the building to cover costs, and secondly, that we would have to close the Old Rd shop. That way the profit that the Campion St shop was making could be put into the centre rather than propping up the other shop.
This was taken to the next Management meeting and discussed with the other committee members and a vote was taken and the decisions were made. The price for hiring the hall was increased to £15.00 per hour from 1st October and the Old Rd shop closed on Friday 19th August. It was a very hard decision to make, however early signs are that it was the right decision, as the Campion St shop is now open 6 days a week as our lovely volunteers from the Old Rd came up to Campion St, and this is having a good affect on takings. It is also much easier to manage stock changes etc in the one shop and I think this is also being reflected in sales in the shop.
A big thank you to all of our shop staff, Jonathan, Glynn, Ne-ne and Angie. A big thank you also to Alison who moved stock to and from the Old Rd shop every week whilst it was open. Special thanks to Leanne, Anthony, Somer, Ross, Andy and Lynne who helped in the closing down and moving of stock and shop fittings from the Old Rd shop once we had closed.

Our on line shop is still being used and we have gained a new volunteer who deals with a lot of our on line sales. Thank you Charmaine for the massive help you have given in on line sales.
We also made the decision to bring our stock room downstairs, which will help our volunteers when sorting the clothes, this meant moving a lot of stock out and sorting the best stuff to keep. Charmaine again has been fantastic at this. Andy and Lynne Kerry have done absolute wonders moving all the fittings downstairs and then renovating the upstairs room into a wonderful new meeting space which we can offer out to smaller groups. Massive thanks for this. We could not have done this without you.
We have now finished all the renovating jobs that were outstanding from last year. New rendering has been applied to the building, and is of a very high standard, so we are hopeful will last for a long time. When the old rendering was removed we did get a bit of a surprise as six memorial stones at the bottom of the building were discovered, each with the name of an individual and date on them. We made the decision to leave these stones uncovered, and are waiting for them to be cleaned up before making any further decisions about protecting them so that they do not deteriorate any further.
After a long wait our Smiths clock has finally been installed and we are very proud to have such an iconic piece on our community centre.
Our latest project started in September, this is the Pantry Support project. Earlier in the year we realised that a lot of local residents were going to find things very tough during the coming winter and we put things in place to try and alleviate some of these concerns. With this in mind we applied for a grant through Foundation Derbyshire, to run a food bank for a year. We were successful in gaining a grant from the Tom Carey Fund. We were only allowed to ask for £2,000, however when the fund read our bid they awarded us £6,000. There were conditions attached including joining the food 4 thought alliance which supplies food to over a dozen food banks in the Derby area. We have now teamed up with the Alliance, and the Pantry is open twice a week for people to come and collect basic food stuffs from us. We are grateful to food 4 thought, fare share, Costco and the local branch of Birds at Mackworth for their contributions of food. At present we have 35 families or individuals signed up to receive help, and take referees from food 4 thought on a weekly basis.
The project is being run by volunteers, Sue, Pauline, San and daughter Kacie, Somer, Margaret and Sam, and volunteers from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints which is on Radbourne St. In particular, Amelia, Phil, Jeanette and Max.
We also started a project to supply blankets to local residents during the winter months and several members of the community have been busy knitting and crocheting squares to make blankets. A big thank you to you all.
I cannot finish my report without mentioning the sterling efforts of 2 people who have already been named for their work in several areas of this report. Andy and Lynne Kerry have looked after the gardens outside the centre and the street planters around the area throughout the year. They do an absolutely marvellous job, even when on occasions a minority of people try to spoil the good work they have done in making our street scene so much more colourful. We are so grateful for all you both do to brighten up the New Zealand area.

Last but not least, our mini bus has been very busy this year, taking different groups out on day trips as well as the weekly shopping trips and lunch club outings. It has become a great asset to our association.
Our Management Committee has resumed our monthly committee meetings and has welcomed new members. It is wonderful to have a few younger members of our neighbourhood alongside the more seasoned committee members. They are a great bunch of people and I am grateful for their contributions to the work that we do in the area. Can I please ask you to join me in thanking, Mu, Emily, Lynn, Leanne, Kelly and Melissa.

I report in respect of my examination of the Trust’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination, I have followed the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.

I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination which gives me cause to believe that in, any material respect:
