CHAIRS REPORT TO TRUSTEES SATURDAY 11TH SEPTEMBER 2021 LONNY WILSONCROFT COMMUNITY CENTRE, STEPPING LANE, DERBY DE1 1GL ## ASSOCIATION BUSINESS: During the past 12 months, hours of usage at the centre have been sporadic, due to lockdowns, both national and local. Two regular groups have been using the centre when allowed throughout the pandemic, GKR Karate use the hall 6 hours a week on two different evenings and Capoeira Brazilian Martial Arts, who use the hall 2.5 hours a week on two different days. Both have been following the strict Covid guidelines whilst using the hall. Recently another activity has started on a Monday evening, a Community Choir, The Stepping Lane Singers. This is a small group of residents which we hope will develop and grow into a full choir. Just starting back this week we have two of our former classes returning, the Stepping Lane Bowls group have returned to their Wednesday afternoon slot, and are looking for new members, and the Caleidoscope Brazilian Drummers returned today for the first time since the first lockdown began. Due to the pandemic we have not (until very recently) rented out the hall for parties at all. However, in August we did have our first two parties booked in, again following strict guidelines. Although we have not been able to hold some of our annual events, where possible we have adapted or done things in a very different way, so we have held 2 socially distanced Jumble Sales, with a one way system in place, sanitiser and thermometer on hand for those attending and no clothes on sale. We did hold our annual Hamper Appeal during November/December 2020. However, due to the charity shops being shut due to lockdowns we were helped with donations by the families of children who attended Brackensdale Spencer Academy Primary School in Mackworth. To say these parents were generous, would be an understatement and we actually collected more food than we ever have at the shops, consequently 26 very full and varied hampers were given out to local families. A big thank you to all those involved in the assembling and distribution of these hampers. We could not hold our usual Childrens Christmas Party in 2020, so we came up with the idea of taking the party to the streets of New Zealand and Morley. On two nights in mid December, good old Bessie the mini bus took to every street in our area to meet the local children and their families and what a wonderful event this was. A small group of volunteers took to the streets to give out sweets and mince pies. We were extremely lucky to have Santa Claus come along with us on both evenings, He was really pleased to be able to meet the children, have his photograph taken and have a little chat to the people on the streets. Big thanks to Sandra Doyle who helped to decorate the inside of the bus to look like a winter wonderland. Thanks to our two volunteer drivers, Ross and Andy who trawled the streets, to Mu, Fay, Doreen, Pauline, Sandra, Chloe, Kacey, Sarah, Claire, Layla, and Vicky who gave up their time to walk the streets giving out the goodies. Thanks also to Melissa Coons who sat at home updating the facebook page to let locals know when to expect us on their street and a very special thank you to the big man himself, who gave up his time to bring abit of excitement during a very difficult period. It truly was a wonderful event to be part of and we are hoping to do the same thing again this year, even if we are able to have a Christmas Party. The Charity Shops have been open and then closed during the several lockdowns, and several volunteers have done their bit to keep the shops going during this difficult time. Thanks to Alan, Layla, Angie, Gary and Katie for manning the shops and thanks to Ross, Andy, Mu and Fay for transporting stock from the centre to the shops. Thanks also to those who work in the background, Mu, Fay, Lynn and others who have helped sort the clothes and other donations. 2 We have started a new branch of the shops, the Nearly New Zealand On Line has been going for a few months now with great success. Mu looks after this side of the shop for us, and has done a sterling job, with great patience, as there can be a number of time wasters on some occasions. The shopping trips on a Monday did resume last year after a break of a few months and Ross has done an excellent job of taking local residents to the Meteor Centre each week to do their shopping. Other trips on the bus have not yet resumed but hopefully in the not too distant future they will be able to do so. The New Zealand Community Times was suspended for about 14 months but resumed publication in July, and although we lost a few volunteers who used to deliver the magazine, the community really got behind us and many more people came forward to help deliver the magazines and we have even discovered a new part of our area that we didn’t realise belonged to us. We have celebrated the 100th edition of the magazine in August and decided to offer a luxury hamper as a prize to celebrate this event. Pauline Wheway was the lucky winner of the hamper and was over the moon with her prize. We have not yet been able to resume the Lunch n Meet Luncheon Club but hope to do so in the near future, meanwhile we are still providing a 2 course meal for some of the more vulnerable members of the club, which are delivered to their homes each Tuesday, we have actually picked up a few new people during this time who will hopefully join us at the centre when we resume the normal service. Thanks again to Ross for delivering and Lisa for providing the meals. We have through the past 12 months had various activities to raise funds, including a plant sale, bingo night, and afternoon tea for the Big Summer Garden Party. The biggest difference at the centre has been the amount of work which has been undertaken to improve the premises. A new roof on each of the separate parts of the building being the biggest and most expensive jobs that have been completed. The old wall has been replaced by a lovely fence, which has exposed the piece of ground at the front of the community centre and this has been lovingly nurtured into a wonderful garden by Andy and his wife Lynne. The ground was first cleared by Ross, and that was no small task. We also had a new gate installed. Inside the hall the ceiling was replaced and the fluorescent lighting was replaced with new led lights, we have a wonderful chandelier which was donated by Andy on our stairs and some other electrical work was done so that each part of the building has its own light switch. A new security system was added and cctv cameras were updated. We still have a few jobs to do, including new rendering on the outside of the building and a new Smiths clock on the main outside wall of the Community Centre. At the beginning of August we held a special Celebration event to thank all of those who have helped us throughout these tumultuous times. During the evening various volunteers were presented with little awards to thank them for their service. These were presented by our local MP Amanda Solloway who came along to celebrate with us. Ross came along to entertain us after the presentation and Mu and her lovely team provided an excellent plated buffet for everyone to enjoy. One of our local Councillors, (Adrian Pegg) provided several bottles of Prosecco to toast the Association. I got the biggest shock of all, as I was presented with a special award, which was not expected at all and for which I am very grateful, and I have to say made me feel very humble, because I know I could not do anything here without the help and support of the many volunteers who work alongside me. The Management Committee have not been able to meet face to face for most of the year, but have recently begun face to face meetings. However the work went on through emails and many thanks are extended to those who contributed during this time. We have lost some of our Committee members due to ill health and we would like to thank Sue Swan and Jayne Mee, who have served on the committee for many years, we are hopeful that they might return to us at some future date but wish them the best. 3 We have been able to recruit several new committee members during the past 12 months and they have already made great contributions to the work we do. We have great plans going forward, including several activities to help local residents, including a drop in café on a Thursday afternoon, and a social activity on a Monday afternoon for retired residents. We have plans to start a cooking on a budget class very soon. I would like to thank the Management Committee both past and present for the tireless contribution to the NZCA and this community. So thank you, Mu, Layla, Emily, Andy, Lynn, Melissa, Janet, Kelly, Nathan, Jo, Sue and Jayne. We look forward to the future working with our local Coouncillors and our MP to make the New Zealand area the best that it can be.
