The Parochial Church Council of the Ecclesiastical Parish of St. Margaret's, Warnham Trustees Report 2024

St Margaret’s, Warnham Trustees Annual Report for 2024

Our aims, purposes and impact as a charity during 2024

As a church community we are seeing to strengthen what we believe through the development of our personal and collective faith. This includes the expansion of our home groups and more opportunities for bible teaching outside of Sunday services. We hope to continue to promote and encourage membership of our various groups through media and advertising and to reach out to those who do not normally attend through special events, including occasional outdoor services and ‘back to church Sunday.’

We are aiming to encourage people to belong not only to our church, but to Christ as his disciples through the continuation of our discipleship course, leading to confirmation where appropriate. We are encouraging children and families to attend services and events and offering opportunities for next steps on their faith journey, such as first communion. Belonging to our community has also been encouraged by the introduction of a new men’s group and the welcoming of younger children into our youth group. We have held several social and fundraising events which brought our community together including a Summer Fair and Christmas Dance.

To help us become a more inclusive church we have now planned for a new sound system to be installed early next year. This will enable more people to participate in and enjoy every aspect of worship services and events. We have also subscribed to the church management suite ‘ iKnowChurch.’ This has helped us ensure GDPR is observed in our communications as well as helping with admin for life events such as baptisms and funerals. Unfortunately, we did not have any weddings at St Margaret’s in 2024, with those that had been booked in being cancelled due to financial reasons.

We have improved the attractiveness and layout of our noticeboards, providing a more welcoming feel. Our parish room was redecorated in the summer by a team of volunteers and it now a much more hospitable and enjoyable environment for all those who use it. We are very much hoping and praying this will encourage more use by the local community.

There is so much to give thanks for over the course of 2024, and we intend to continue to build on this work of finding new ways to encourage people to believe, belong and become disciples of Christ. May we continue to reach out to and include people of all ages and backgrounds as we journey into the year ahead. Thanks be to God.

At the end of the year ending 31st December 2024, the members on our Electoral Roll numbered 184 (a decrease of 4 from 2023).

The Parochial Church Council of the Ecclesiastical Parish of St. Margaret's, Warnham Trustees Report 2024

Financial Summary

Annual Accounts for the year ending 31/12/24 show income of £122,160 and expenditure of £124,133 producing a deficit of just under £2,000.

Expenditure

Heating and lighting costs were down £6,000 from last year. A loss was made on the Warnham Warbler, about which the Parish Council will be approached.

The total of our expenditure in 2024 was £124,133

Income

Planned giving income has remained static for a number of years and our stewardship initiative to encourage folk to increase their giving in April will hopefully bear fruit. It is important that we re-double our efforts to ensure surpluses in future years. It is pleasing however to see the 200 club making a significant contribution to income.

Our income for 2024 was £122,160

Savings

The total we have held in reserve is now £84,714.

Postscript

Audrey Higgs very kindly agreed to undertake the role of treasurer as from the beginning of January 2024 and is willing to continue for 2025.

Independent Examiner’s report

Accounts for the year ended 31st December 2024

Respective responsibilities of the Trustees and the examiner

The charity’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts and they consider that an audit is not required for the year under section 144(2) of the Charities Act 2011 (the Charities Act) and that an independent examination is needed. It is my responsibility to:

Examine the accounts under section 145 of the Charities Act to follow the procedures laid down in the general directions given by the Charity Commission (under section 145(5)(b) of the Charities Act, and to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.

Basis of the Independent Examiner’s statement

My examination was carried out in accordance with the general directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with these records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts and seeking explanations from the trustees concerning such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required for an audit, and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a ‘true and fair’ view and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.

Independent examiner’s statement

In connection with my examination, no material matter has come to my attention which gives me cause to believe that in, any material respect:

Accounting records were not kept in accordance with section 130 of the Charities Act, or the accounts do not accord with the accounting records

Just to note that we were unable to confirm the following bank accounts as it was not possible provide us with the bank statements for due to the passing of the person who had access to them:
