St Margaret’s, Warnham Trustees Annual Report for 2023

Our aims, purposes and impact as a charity during 2023

Our Mission Action Plan states that as a church we are seeking to become an inclusive place for all where faith and life interact. To do this we need to grow, communicate, preserve and reach.

We have been seeking to grow over this past year by establishing two new home groups, kindly hosted by Angela and Martin Rogers, and Rachael and Nick Coysh. Sunday Club was launched again in February 2023 and has seen a regular group of children attending. We ran a course called ‘Living in Love and Faith’ during Lent which was attended by about 10 people each week. 12 were baptised, with 3 young people receiving their first communion in April 2023. Confirmation groups met from September 2022 and through 2023 with 5 adults being confirmed in Slinfold in May and 4 young people in September in Horsham all by Bishop Will, the Bishop of Lewes. We are very excited that Jo Browse has begun training to become a Licensed Lay Minister.

We have been seeking to communicate by improving our notice boards and publicity with up to date information and communicating via social media as well as adding more people to our weekly email list. Our well presented and content rich parish magazine continues to be a source of information and inspiration to so many across the parish.

We have been seeking to preserve by refurbishing our outside notice board and are now looking into making improvements to our sound system. We are continuing to encourage generous giving so that we are able to continue to maintain both our buildings and our ministries. We have held a number of fundraising events including concerts, a barn dance and the popular ‘Christmas in the Churchyard.’

We have been working on our reach by continuing with Friday Coffee as a community event for all and holding another Table Top Sale across the village. The re launch of Messy Church in 2023 has been key in helping us to reach out to groups who have been underrepresented within our church community including younger adults, children and families.

At the end of the year ending 31st December 2023, the members of our Electoral Roll numbered 188 (a decrease of 5 from 2022).

Financial Summary

This could have been a difficult financial year in many respects as although the analysis of income and expenditure looks like we made a small gain, please note we sadly had to withdraw at various times during the year a total of £8,500 from our Instant Savings Account to keep our current account in credit. Fortunately, we had a legacy of £10,000 and by the end of the year transferred this into the Lloyds Instant Savings account.

Expenditure

One of the issues for expenditure has been the effects of the rising costs of living and especially in relation to electricity and gas. Although we are in the Parish Basket which aims to buy gas and electricity at the cheapest rates, we have spent a staggering £11,523 on these services for the Church and Parish Room.

However, our biggest financial outlay is the contribution to the Parish Share (payment to Chichester Diocese which goes towards clergy pensions, clergy, housing training etc) which was £79,000, which was an agreed increase by the PCC of just over £2000 from the previous year.

The other main expenditures include the following.

Our Church Insurance, including cover of the Parish Room has cost £4,028. General maintenance jobs for Church and Churchyard amounted to £3,836.

We spent £1,558 on special services and administration costs. We are very fortunate to have a Parish Administrator and this costs £3,432.

The vicarage expenses for council tax and water rates were £4,258 for 2023. Our Church is known for its excellent music and singing. Payments for music licenses, junior choir and organists have cost £3,814.

It is also known for its growing work with young people – the costs for Sunday Club and Messy Church amounted to £399 on these activities. The youth work costs of £454 have been taken from the Restricted Youth Fund.

The Warbler expenses came in at £ 5,616 so it ran at a small loss this year. This was mainly due to a couple of bigger issues being produced which increased the printing costs but the feedback about the Warbler is excellent.

The total of our expenditure was £130,752

Income

Although the above figure highlights the running costs of keeping our Church open and however daunting this may feel, we also need to look at and appreciate the staggering amount of income that is raised by the congregation and community.

Firstly, we must acknowledge the very kind and generous legacy of £10,000 left to our Church by Peter Wright. This has been put in the Lloyds Instant Savers account as we are planning on using this to help pay towards the improvement being planned for the sound system. Thank you Peter.

We are also extremely grateful to all who contribute through giving in the Parish Giving Scheme, Planned Giving, Yellow Envelopes, by Donations and Collections as this has contributed £66,152 to our funds. This money also enables gift aid tax to be recovered and this has produced a further 15,474 so the total became £81,626. Gift aided giving is extremely important so if you are a tax payer, please remember this. If you are a higher tax payer please also remember you can claim on money given to charities so it benefits you and the charity!

We would also like to give huge thanks for the energy and hard work from all those involved with planning and running fundraising events throughout the year and to those who come along and support them. Fund raising events contributed a staggering £12,466 after costs were deducted.

We also started the 200 Club in August 2023. The yearly subs paid pro-rata for August to December 23 and the monthly subs for the same period raised £2,095. We have also given away £520 in prize money.

The Parish Room raises a further £2,308 and again our thanks to Audrey who organises the lettings and sends out invoices. Also, thanks to the team who clean and care for this valuable building. Funeral funerals, memorials including headstones and weddings also raise our income and this year £6,478. We were also fortunate to receive a grant from the Parish Council for our ‘Warm Space’ that is provided through the Friday Coffee Morning.

Our income for 2023 was £131,520

Charitable Giving

It should also be mentioned that our Church has continued to make charitable donations. Over £5,690 was raised by the sleep out in the Churchyard for the YMCA Downslink Group, a further £400 was given from the Friday Coffee Morning to Jane’s Wish plus £377 was raised through Lent Lunches and split between the Turkey/Syrian Earthquake Disaster Appeal and Paz y Esperanza, for whom we also raised £225 at a special service and cake sale with a visiting speaker. We raised £2,117 for Christian aid and gave £270 to British Legion. Thank you again to all who were involved with these activities which raised a total of £9,079 for our Charitable giving.

Savings

This year, after a very helpful discussion with Sue Howlett, we closed the two Monmouthshire accounts and moved £3,000 into a separate restricted 1-year fixed bond for the Joan Barton Endowment Fund with the United Trust Bank. The remaining £28,617.10 was transferred to a 2-year fixed bond with the same bank with interest for the two accounts paid at 4.3% and 4.4% respectively.

The savings with Lloyds Bank was realigned and we closed the old 32-day interest account transferred it to the Instant Savings account before putting £15,000 in a 1-year fixed bond and

£10,075 in a new 32-day account with a better interest rate.

The remainder of the savings we kept in the Instant Savings Account. We moved the legacy of £10,000 into the Instant Savings account so we now have a total of £29,638 in that account. Included in this account are the restricted funds for Flowers (£804.46) Joan Barton Interest from Endowment Fund (£651), M Hodgson Fabric Fund (£34) The Rev Loveless Mission Fund (£2598) and Youth Fund (£228). Excluding these restricted funds the Church has £25,323.00 for its own use in this account. It is expected this account will be used to pay towards the improved sound system and to top up the current account as required.

Liabilities

For those who are not sure what this refers to, it is the money collected in the ‘Agency Funds’ which does not get included on our income as it goes directly elsewhere. The money referred to is for the Chichester Boad of Finance for their payment for funerals, weddings etc.

Postscript

Audrey Higgs has very kindly agreed to undertake the role of treasurer as from the beginning of January 2024 but would be delighted to hear from you if you would like to consider a stimulating and satisfying challenge. We use a dedicated accounting system for Churches and the support offered by the firm is excellent. I have thoroughly enjoyed my two years and have been so well supported in this role. I would have willingly continued had it not been for ill health. Please contact Rebecca or Audrey if you are interested in helping as treasurer.

Independent Examiner’s report

Accounts for the year ended 31[st ] December 2023

Respective responsibilities of the Trustees and the examiner

The charity’s trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts and they consider that an audit is not required for the year under section 144(2) of the Charities Act 2011 (the Charities Act) and that an independent examination is needed. It is my responsibility to:

Examine the accounts under section 145 of the Charities Act to follow the procedures laid down in the general directions given by the Charity Commission (under section 145(5)(b) of the Charities Act, and to state whether particular matters have come to my attention.

Basis of the Independent Examiner’s statement

My examination was carried out in accordance with the general directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with these records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts and seeking explanations from the trustees concerning such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required for an audit, and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a ‘true and fair’ view and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.

Independent examiner’s statement

In connection with my examination, no material matter has come to my attention which gives me cause to believe that in, any material respect:

Accounting records were not kept in accordance with section 130 of the Charities Act, or the accounts do not accord with the accounting records

I have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
