Benefice of Farnworth, Stoneclough and Kearsley

As I look back over the past year across our Benefice, my overwhelming sense is one of gratitude, gratitude for people, for faithfulness, and for the quiet, steady work of God already unfolding among us.

We are a Benefice of distinct communities, varied contexts, and shared purpose. Across Farnworth, Ringley, Kearsley, and Prestolee, we serve areas of real resilience alongside real need. Week by week, our churches continue to offer worship that is rooted, prayerful, and welcoming, whether in the regular rhythm of Holy Communion, the proclamation of the Word, or the simple but profound ministry of presence.

Much of our life together is carried by volunteers whose generosity of time, skill, and care cannot be overstated. From pastoral visiting and home communion, to worship leading, governance, music, hospitality, and environmental care, shared ministry is not a slogan here, it is our lived reality. I am particularly encouraged by those currently discerning new ministries, both lay and ordained, and by the strengthening of our ministry team over the past year.

Our engagement with children, families, and schools continues to be one of the strongest and most hopeful signs of growth. Weekly assemblies, classroom visits, Experience Easter and Christmas, church tours, and seasonal services have allowed thousands of children to encounter the Christian story with honesty, creativity, and joy. Parents remain welcome and involved, and relationships with school leaders are strong and trusted.

Pastorally, we have walked with many through moments of grief, loss, and transition. Funerals, baptisms, and hospital and home visits remain at the heart of our calling, as does our chaplaincy among marginalised communities. These ministries are rarely visible, but they are deeply holy ground.

Our churches also continue to serve their wider communities in practical ways: hosting support groups, working with police and civic partners, welcoming community payback teams, and offering spaces of belonging through coffee mornings, children’s groups, fairs, music, and social gatherings. The level of local support and fundraising, not least in Stoneclough, speaks volumes about the trust our churches hold in their communities.

As we look ahead, we do so realistically and prayerfully. We are choosing to focus on what nurtures discipleship and relationship, and to let go of unnecessary complexity that drains energy without bearing fruit. Key priorities include youth engagement, clearer pathways for families, confirmation preparation, significant building projects, and forthcoming milestones such as St John’s 200-year anniversary.

We remain committed to reviewing our life and mission not simply by numbers, but by faithfulness, attentive to where God is already at work, and courageous enough to follow where we are being led.

Thank you to all who serve, pray, give, and encourage. It is a privilege to share this ministry with you.

Secretary's annual report

The PCC has continued to fulfil its responsibility for supporting worship, the mission and ministry of the church, and this report highlights some of the ways in which that has been expressed through worship and community engagement.

On 12[th] January 2025 the first intergenerational family service of the calendar year was held. The new verse of the year is from Proverb 3:5 “ Trust in the Lord with all your heart, do not depend on your own understanding .” The talk focussed on baptism. Ayla and Harper received their Brownie badges and Jasmine was presented with her Silver Award.

The PCC met on 19[th] February and plans were made for Fr Stephen's sabbatical and a plan of repairs to the ceiling and associated works were agreed following the flooding and collapse of the kitchen ceiling in June 2023.

At the February Intergenerational Service it was lovely to welcome many new faces and at the March Intergenerational service we wrote messages to our schools and members of the team visited St Saviour’s, St Stephen’s, St Peter’s, St John’s finishing at All Saints.

Experience Easter took place from the 1[st] to the 3[rd] of April. Seven local schools attended the Event and around 260 children learned about the Christian story of Easter.

On Tuesday 8th April Alison led a beautiful Palm Sunday Service. We celebrated the great achievement of Brownies, Lilly, Amy, Isla, Lacie, Eleanor and Freya being awarded their Gold Awards. All were glad that the repairs to the ceiling had started.

The Parish Church Meeting/ Annual Parochial Church Meeting and First Parochial Church Council Meeting was held on 17[th] April 2025 and Parish Church Meeting held on 23rd April 2025 when Judith Birchall and Jackie Powell were unanimously voted as church wardens and Denise Entwistle as Deputy Warden. Fr Stephen's sabbatical began on Wednesday 30th April.

On Sunday 13th July Heather, Jackie and Alison were presented with their 20 Year Service Awards at the Intergenerational Service.

A PCC meeting took place on 16[th] July 2025. The PCC unanimously voted in favour of the levelling of the stones in the church yard. PCC agreed to the formation of a social committee who would also consider Bicentenary Events.

The repairs, painting and fitting of the new carpet took place between April and August 2025.

At the Team Service on Sunday 31[st] August, we welcomed Fr Stephen back after his Sabbatical. The Church looked beautiful now that the repairs were complete. The Altars were adorned with the three new Altar Cloths bought with money left to church by Betty Higham.

In August the church was donated a lovely new Notice Board attached to the church building, donated in memory of Dorothy McGlynn. Dorothy also was a lifelong stalwart of St John’s Church.

It was fantastic news that St John’s Guide Unit reopened on Tuesday 16th September with a new Leader, Lizzy Mae Walsh.

A PCC meeting took place on Wednesday 24th September 2025

On Saturday 11[th] October, we held our first social event in church for over two years. The Narthex was warm, cosy and welcoming. 35 members of the congregation, family and friends joined together for our Harvest Supper and Bingo Evening; it was lovely to see so many new faces in church. The event had been organised as a social event to spend time together and welcome new friends but we also raised money towards Church funds. Thank you to the willing team who worked tirelessly to make the evening such a huge success.

Sunday 12[th] October was our Harvest Festival. Donations of food and money were brought for Farnworth Food Bank.

"Double Take That" wowed the crowd at the Take That tribute night at St John's Church on 29th October 2025 marking the start of the 200-year celebrations. The celebrations couldn't have got off to a better start. St John's Church looked beautiful with the atmospheric lighting and the acoustics were fantastic. Double Take were brilliant and performed many of Take That's greatest hits including Relight my Fire, Greatest Day, Rule the World, Never Forget, Shine, Pray, Patience, It Only Takes A Minute, A Million Love Songs, Sure and Could it be Magic. They even sneaked in Rock DJ, a Robbie Williams song! They got the crowd going, some were singing along, holding phones up as torches and dancing in the pews and aisles. Thanks to everyone who came along; dancing and singing the night away. There was crowd participation with our very own Alison Mole joining in on the microphone during the song Patience!

Talented Tristan Parrock (aka Gary Barlow when on stage!) grew up in Farnworth and wanted to perform in the Church and help raise funds. Lots of tickets were sold and there was a raffle and auction on the night. Tristan was the auctioneer and the auction prize was a framed Relight My Fire CD, with the sheet music signed by Gary, Mark, Howard and Jason. The bids just kept on coming! It was a fabulous night with over £1000 raised! Very special thanks go to Double Take That and to Susan and Jackie for all of the planning in making the night such a success. Many thanks also to Stella, Chris, Kim and Denise and to all of the social committee for their help.

The All-age Service of Remembrance took place on 9[th] November 2025 to pay tribute to those who have served and sacrificed in times of conflict. The Last Post commemorated those who have died. During the minute's silence poppies fell from the balconies. The Reveille, bugle call was played and the National Anthem sung.

St John’s church was very busy on the 18th, 19[th] and 20th of November when over 260 children from seven schools came to our ‘Experience Christmas’ event. They heard the Christian story of Christmas. Thanks to All Saints, St John’s, St Peter’s, St Gregory’s, Kearsley West, The Ferns and Queensbridge and the team of volunteers, Kim, Alison, Denise, Gill, Jess, Judith, June, Steve and Susan, without who this event couldn’t happen.

On 29[th] November 2025 the Christmas fayre was held in Church opened by the school choir with their lovely singing. Many thanks to everyone who attended to support the Church. There was a baked goods stall and stalls selling gifts, toys and books including Elfridges Christmas gifts, Name the Teddy stall and the Christmas Money Tree. The Brownies did a superb job running the bottle stall and the tombola was as popular as ever. Father Christmas made his special guest appearance. The raffle prizes were announced at the end. £1790 was raised for the Church.

It was lovely to see a packed church for the annual Carol Service on 14[th] December. It was a joyous event attended by the local community, schools and Councillors. Many thanks to the Canon Cook, Liz Cook and Liz's mum on the organ. Very well done to each of the school choirs with a bit of healthy competition when cheering them all on!

Christmas Eve saw the Christingle workshop at 10am and Christingle service later in the day in a packed church.

Thanks as always to those who volunteer their time and contribute to all the events including Susan, Stella, Chris, Alison, Kim and Denise and many others. Many thanks also to our Authorised Lay Minsters, Alison and Liz and Canon Cook for all their contributions during Father Stephen's sabbatical.

The PCC also want to send a special thanks to Alan Taylor for the work he did to ensure the church received the payments due regarding the mast rental which contributed to the church ended the year in profit.

We are very much looking forward to the plans for the Bicentennial celebrations.

St Johns Farnworth - Treasurers Report 2025

As we look at the accounts for 2025 and compare from the previous year we have faired a lot better with our finances.

We finished the year in profit by £24k which hasn’t been achieved for the previous 2 years. This is due to the great work Alan Taylor did regarding the Mast Rental as he discovered we were not getting the payments we were due. The payment in 2024 was £11K against 2025 where we were paid the backlog owed to a total of £39K so big thanks to Alan. Regular giving is slightly down by just over £600 with one off loose giving on the plate has pretty much remained the same.

Carrying on with Income we are slightly up on Weddings, but Funerals dropped from £9K to £2.7k for 2025. Fairs and Events was also down by over £3k.

As previous years our Gas & Electricity remained our biggest expenditure, but we paid less by £1750 compared to 2024.

On conclusion even though we made a profit this was only due to the Mast rental work from Alan; we still need to improve with income as a church moving forward.

I would like to close by thanking all the people who help me out through the year, Tony Hemming, Steve Mann, Alan Taylor, Susan Stevens and Shaun.

Planned Giving and Gift Aid

In 2025 there were 26 regular doners (giving either via an envelope or through a bank standing order), 21 taxpayers and 5 non-taxpayers.

Donations from the taxpayers amounted to £10,998.00 and from the non-taxpayers £1,412.20 giving a total of £12,410.20.

Donations from One-off Envelopes amounted to £59.

The tax reclaimed in 2025 from those who had signed up to the Gift Aid Scheme plus those who had signed One-off Gift Aid envelopes amounted to £2,687.54. Please note that the tax

reclaimed in 2025 is dependent on income received in the tax year ending 5th April 2025 rather than the calendar year.

Due to HMRC’s Gift Aid Small Donations Scheme (or GASDS for short) which was introduced in April 2013, we are now able to claim ‘top-up’ payments on amounts of up to £8,000 on none Gift Aided cash donations of £30 or less. The income from this amounted to £1,657.45

In addition, income from Loose Plate amounted to £3,528.93.

Thank you to all who have contributed through either the Planned Giving and the Gift Aid Scheme or via Loose Plate.

Church Wardens' Report

What a busy year it has been. We started the year off with Reverend Stephen going on his sabbatical. While he was away, the back of the church was decorated and a new carpet was laid, thanks to everyone who contributed to the cost of the carpet. Over the year, we have held several fundraising events the 2 main ones being the Christmas Fair and the Take That tribute act performed by Tristan Parrock and his friends. This alone raised £1387, thanks to everyone who supported this event. Please continue to support any events so we can move forward with repairs to the church building.

The Wardens would like to thank Alison, Liz, Steph and Area Dean Simon for their hard work during Stephen’s sabbatical, enabling church services to continue. We also said goodbye to Steph as she continued on her Christian journey in another parish. We wish Steph well in all she does. Thanks also to Kim, who organised the Easter and Christmas experience, which both were well attended by all our church schools, also some of the community schools.

These and all other events can’t go ahead without volunteers, so please, if you can help with anything, speak to 1 of the Wardens and they can point you to the correct person.

As we look forward to the bicentenary birthday in September, please help or support in any way you can, so that worship hopefully can continue for many more years.

We continue to struggle with payment of our quota, so if you can find a way of raising your weekly giving or giving a one-off, donation.

A special thank you goes to Susan, who has spent many hours behind the scenes working on raising money and organising events, she has also been a key figure in getting work on the church and churchyard.

Authorised Lay Ministry Report

Yet another year has passed…

Another year of ALMing at St.John’s.

My church life continues to be of great importance to me and enjoy co-leading the services with Stephen.

Our intergenerational service on the second Sunday of each Month has continued to thrive. Liz and I continue receive great feedback from the congregation each month saying how much they enjoy coming. We both love leading this service.

I find my Authorised Lay Ministry very rewarding and enjoyable and would greatly encourage others to look at the training. I am always encouraged and amazed by the support I receive from all at church. I am due for re-authorisation in 2026 and will not hesitate to do so.

As a church we look forward to celebrating our 200th anniversary in 2026 – a great achievement to our past and present congregation and ministers.

Authorised Lay Ministry - Second and Fourth Sunday Services Report

Over the last 12 months Alison and I have led services on the second and fourth Sunday of each month. The second Sunday service is geared towards families and is more informal in nature. The fourth Sunday takes the form of a morning prayer service – either using the booklets that we have in church or a service that has been prepared using materials from Times and Seasons. This resource contains authorised liturgy such as confessions, gospel acclamations and opening prayers that are linked to different times of the year.

For the second service Alison and I meet monthly to discuss the readings, plan the service, think of ways to engage the young people and choose the music. In the first part of the year we follow the lectionary, however in October we hold our Harvest service (using the readings set out that year in the lectionary), in November we lead our annual Remembrance service and in December we have our annual carol service. At our carol service this year we were joined by singers from St Peter’s, All Saints and St John’s and the service was led by Rev Canon Simon Cook.

For the fourth Sunday Alison or I will plan depending on who is leading the service.

This year we are extremely grateful that we have been able to use the songs on screen that has been provided to us by the Holland Trust. We are now supplementing this with additional songs and hymns so that we are able to sing more traditional music alongside the contemporary.

In addition to our regular second and fourth services we have also had the privilege of planning and supporting with the leading of a special communion for Mothering Sunday and our usual Easter service.

Being able to provide this ministry to our church family brings both Alison and I great joy. We welcome any feedback and if anyone would like to join our monthly planning meetings at my home you are more than welcome (Canon Cook will even make you a cup of tea!).

I thank God for our wonderful congregation at St John’s and the love that we share between us. We are looking forward to planning our service for the 200th anniversary and hope that we continue to grow in number and faith.

The Electoral Roll started last year at 50 members. Unfortunately, I can only report that it has remained the same for the whole year.

Lots of new people are reluctant to join totally into our church organisation.

I can only hope that our numbers will increase again, but I don’t know how or what else I can do to achieve this. Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

Report from All Saints’ CE Primary

‘With God, all things are possible’ Matthew 19:26

This is my final annual report as Head Teacher at All Saints. I will be taking early retirement at the end of this academic year due to family commitments. I have been with the school since September 2012 and feel enormously blessed and privileged to have served such an amazing school community. I am delighted that Nikita Holden will be Acting Head Teacher from September 2026. Nikita has worked at All Saints since 2014; I know school will be in safe hands with Nikita.

Friendship

The relationships between staff, children, parents and wider community are one of the many strengths at All Saints. The power of these friendships supports me and all the staff through challenging times that may arise. Our OPAL Play Scheme, predominantly facilitated by the children themselves, allows children to develop friendships through play. Our High Needs Base Nursery provision, offering 6 places each morning and afternoon to children with additional needs goes from strength to strength and is currently full. The children are placed with us by Bolton LA but spend regular inclusion time in both our indoor and outdoor areas with the rest of our Nursery children. It’s uplifting to see all our children develop their friendships through play.

As always, our church friends continue to support in so many ways. Our children love Fr Stephen’s weekly worship. The Y6 children are due to attend the Diocesan Y6 Leavers’

service at Manchester Cathedral in June. Our children have enjoyed coming to Experience Christmas and Experience Easter and the school choir take part in events held in St John’s Church. I have undertaken the Christian Leadership course this year facilitated by the Diocese and look forward to the Celebration Event at Manchester Cathedral in July and continue to benefit from ongoing support and advice from the Diocese.

Our community at All Saints is incredibly diverse, and this really is one of the best things about our school. Our children learn about different faiths, cultures, and family backgrounds every day, as they chat to their friends. Our Muslim families join us in our Nativity and Carol Services as well as our Easter service. Our Christian families join us at our Eid assembly. Our community also worked together for our annual Harvest collection and worship, where we donate to the foodbank at The Well.

We have continued to work closely with our other Farnworth schools. #Farnworth matters is now a well-established part of the Y5 calendar, and the end of year celebration event will be held at Harper Green School to celebrate their collaboration.

Hope

We continue to develop our academic support for children. Our KS2 Reading and Maths achievement was above national results in 2025, as was our combined achievement for Reading/Writing/Maths. Our phonics and times tables data were also above national averages. With the drop in birth rate and challenging times for schools filling places, we are fortunate that we have received many more applications for our Reception class, than we have places available and will be full for our September 2026 intake. As I leave All Saints at the end of this academic year, I am filled with love and hope for the continued success of our

school community. I trust in God, the school and church community to support Nikita in leading All Saints for the good of all. Please continue to hold All Saints in your prayers.

3 rd Farnworth St John’s Brownies

2005 was another busy year for the Brownies, we began working towards Skills for my Future Award, Live Smart. We celebrated Chinese New Year, Valentines Day and Thinking Day. In February six Brownies gained their Gold Awards, it's always exciting when the girls plan, prepare and present a meeting for their Gold Award Challenge and we see what confident young ladies they have become.

In the Spring, we completed Have Adventures, Camp, pitching tents in the school yard and making hedgehog houses, bug hotels, planting seeds and lighting fires on the Allotment, cooking Smores. Thank you to Graham Martin and Chris and Stella Gee for supporting us with these activities.

We celebrated VE Day, making Windmills, Bookmarks and Fridge Magnets and playing old fashioned games like, In and Out the Dusty Bluebells and The Farmers in his Den, which the girls loved.

We welcomed Julia Sixsmith from Hindley Hedgehog Rescue who gave us a very informative talk on Hedgehogs. We raised money for the Charity and donated Kitten Food and a Hedgehog House.

In July we welcomed our two new Commissioners Susan and Brenda and had an exciting evening making Electronic Brush Bots. The Brownies engaged in a new Eco Award Challenge and also gained Zero Waste Badge. We ended the Summer Term with a lovely evening at Poppywood Alpacas, feeding, walking and learning about Alpacas.

We gave each Brownie £5.00 before the holidays and asked them to make it grow. The girls made cakes, bracelets and did Good Turns. They raised enough money for us to buy a Countertop Oven and Induction Hob and three Electric Heaters for St John’s Church. July brought the introduction of the new Brownie Interest Badge Book, 18 more exciting Badges for the girls to work on at home. We put the new badge book to good use working towards our Safety Badge and visited Farnworth Fire Station. The Brownies have also enjoyed taking the new badges, Passions, Guiding Glow, Crafts, Book Reviewer, Folklore, Celebrations, Holidays and Sportsperson. They have kept Snowy Owl very busy ordering badges and keeping their online details up to date.

In September we welcomed Lizzy Ward as our new Guide Leader, supported by Susan Walsh our Commissioner. We are so thankful to them for keeping the Unit open as the Guide Unit will be celebrating their 100[th] Birthday in June 2027.

We also welcomed back Poppy Lucas as our Brownie Helper, making the link between Brownies and Guides and supporting the girls with Activities.

In November, one Brownie was awarded her Gold Award at Guide HQ at the County Awards Ceremony. Jackie Powell, Alison Mole and Heather Birchall were awarded their 20 Year Service Awards. Heather, Graham Martin, Chris and Stella Gee were awarded Lancashire Border Thanks Badges for all the support they give to our Brownie Unit. The girls (and parents) continued to support St John’s Church, attending monthly Church Parade where they are presented with their Badges and Awards and by reading Prayers. They also held a Bottle Stall and Christmas Money Tree at the Church at the Festive Fair and sold copious amounts of Raffle Tickets. The year ended with our annual visit to Stagedoor Productions Pantomime this year being Aladdin. We were also entertained at our Christmas Party by Rockstar Magic, Andy Harrison who absolutely amazed the Brownies with his spell bounding tricks and Stella provided us with a buffet, which the girls made disappear!
